Using iPhone as a iPod only?

My current cellphone plan won't expire till the end of this year, but I really would like to get an iPhone..
Do I HAVE TO have an AT&T account to use iPhone? Can't I use iPhone just as an iPod?? I've heard that you can use bluetooth to use the internet on iPhone...
Thanks for any information you may have.

Using any iPhone features requires activation through iTunes which includes an account with the iTunes store and an account with AT&T. Once that is achieved, you can use all the features, and the non-GSM features even without access to the AT&T network.
There is Wi-Fi on the iPhone, but its Bluetooth can't access the Internet.

  • Using iPhone as an iPod only

I just received an iPhone for xmas but I'm not ready to change over from my current cell phone (pending move). I would like to use for music listening and maybe some pictures viewing. I currently own an iPod video. Will someone please let me know how to accomplish that?

If you port your existing number over it will cancel your account with your old carrier (assuming it is anybody but att) and you will be charged the etf it you are still in contract.
another option would be to activate the iphone as a new account.. you would loose your old number and be paying for two phones, but then you could use your iphone and just cancel the other number when your contract is up or when it is convenient for you to do so.

  • Want to use iphone 4s as ipod but can't get past activation

My brother sent his iPhone 4s in to have a replacement.  When he got the new one back he never used it and he closed his account with ATT.  He has a work phone that is paid for him now and doesn't need it.  I asked him if he'd send it to me to use.  I wanted to use it as an iPod, but I can't get past the activation.  I'm being told by the phone that I need a sim card to activate it but I don't have a sim and I have phone service already so I don't need to go get it turned on.  It's a perfect little piece of equipment that I'd love to use but I can't.  Can anyone please help me?

Restore your phone as new.  Place a SIM card into the phone and connect it your computer with iTunes open and follow the activation assistant to activate the iphone.  Once the iphone have been activated remove the SIM card and turn on imessage in settings/messages.  Only your Apple ID should appear in the “You can be reached by imessage at” and “Start new conversation from” fields.  Read the following article for help http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3406

  • Use iPhone 4 as iPod touch

What do I have to do to use my iPhone 4 as an IPod touch? I currently have a 4 and am no longer going to use it as a phone but I would to keep it as a newer touch with a camera.

You can't do anything with an iPhone until it is activated.  Activating it doesn't mean it is activating it with service, it only activates the phone to work as an iPod Touch.  The sim doesn't need to be activated either, it only has to be a valid sim and properly inserted.  Once activated, it will be an iPod Touch without phone service.

  • Using iPhone 5 as iPod touch. Help?

I currently have an iPhone 5 that I bought through Sprint. It's on a cellphone plan through Sprint as well. I'm really wanting to cut some financial corners and am hoping that it is possible to cancel my Sprint services but still be able to use the phone as an iPod. I suppose I just need a walk through on how to make this happen. Once I terminate my sprint service, can I just continue using the phone or are there steps in between that? Also, I know I there are apps that you can download in order to still be able to text and make calls. Could someone tell me what those are? For example, would GoogleVoice work or not?
    Thank you!

As far as texting and making calls,   apps such as Pinger or TextFree work wifi/3G in a VoIP manor.  It gives you a real phone number that you can purchase minutes (or earn them in certain ways)   and it gives you free unlimited texting.   As far as using the iPhone as an iPod Touch, I have not found anyhting pointing to the idea that it would not work.  It would be a wifi-only iPod Touch 5, but it SHOULD still work.

  • Using iPhone as an iPod (not activated)

I am planning on selling my iPhone to a friend that doesn't have att. I am selling my iphone to get the new 3g iPhone. since my friend doesn't have att he was going to use it as an ipod after i remove my sim card. I'm wondering if he will be able to use it fully on iTunes.

He should be able to use it as a Touch but he will not be able to download updates.

  • Using iphone 4 as ipod

If I turn off the cellular data on my old iphone 4, can I use it as an ipod? It still connects to wifi and I want to make sure that I won't get account charges or anything.
It is a verizon iphone so there is no external SIM card for me to remove.

    Howdy rwagner9,
If I understand correctly you just need to verify that you can use your iPhone without a cellular plan. According to the following article you can do that just fine.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I'm thinking of getting a noniphone and want to make sure that as long as I keep my sim I can use the iPhone as a iPod touch including FaceTime and I'll be able to upgrade to newest iOS whenever it comes out?
    Thanks!
I've read the apple article about using iPhone as iPod touch. it doesn't answer these questions

Yes it will work just fine.

  • Using iphone like an ipod

I was thinking of purchasing an iPhone and using it like an iPod. I already have a cellular plan that I do not want to deactivate it just yet. I want to at least try out the iPhone before I make that change.
If I bought a new/used iPhone online that is locked to a carrier with a sim card included, will I be able to use that iPhone without signing up for a data/cellular plan? Also, is there an activation process when I turn on the device for the first time that prevents me from just going to the home screen?

Yes.   But you have to pay full retail price which would be $600-$850.
It does require a SIM card to activate the phone on iTunes, but you do not need to use a sim card with cell service, any SIM card will do.
Choose a phone that is carrier unlocked BUT compatible with your current cell network ( or the network you want )
    Warning on purchasing used phones....
the iPhone has an activation lock feature to prevent a phone from being used by a thief.  It cannot be defeated.   Thieves often sell iPhones that are locked to an Apple ID knowing the buyer will not be able to activate it on iTunes.  CYA as they say.
IF you decide to put it on your cell account, you will not have to sign a contract.  the carrier will provide a valid SIM card so you will have cell service.

  • Can I Purchase Sim Card on Ebay to Use iPhone 4 as iPod Touch?

I'm looking to purchase an iPhone 4 on Ebay to convert to an iPod Touch, mainly because of the highly superior camera and specs, but I know that you need a MicroSIM card to activate the phone. The phone I'm looking at is a Verizon version, so I was wondering if I could be able to just purchase a blank Verison SIM on Ebay, since they're only a few dollars? Unfortunately, none of my friends or nearby family have SIMs I can use as all of their phones don't have them, so I'm hoping I'm not in a pickle here. lol

So should I look for an iPhone from a specific carrier? I'm really trying to make caving into getting the iPod Touch 4th Gen a last resort because I know they're techincally inferior, and I take a lot of photos and would love to have the extra horsepower.

  • Use iPhone 4s as iPod Touch, Can't Activate

    Hello all,
I have an old Sprint 4s that I'd like to keep using as an iPod Touch and don't need cell service on. I wiped it clean when I got my new phone and haven't touched it in about a year. I turned it on and it started to take me through the activation process but I keep getting the error message "Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable" So I plugged it into iTunes and when I click the on the iPhone in iTunes I get a message that says "Your request couldn't be processed. We're sorry, but there was an error processing your request. Please try again later." I tried restoring the phone and got the same messages. Then I tried putting the phone in recovery mode, restoring it, and I got the same messages after it updated the ios.
I had a chat session with Apple and after some troubleshooting to do things I had already done, they transferred me to a supervisor who basically said "you need a support sim, go search the forums." Anybody know anything about this? Is the sim card really the problem, and how do I get a support sim card?
    Thanks in advance.
    Matt

My understanding of the Sprit SIM is that it is matched to the particular device, so using one other than the one for the phone may be the reason it is not working. I'm guessing the one that you attempted to use was a Sprint SIM.
The iPhone 4S on Sprint wouldn't have required any SIM to activate. It would only have used a SIM for international roaming. Domestically, it would simply be working on the CDMA network. As I recall, the phones generally had to be connected to a computer with iTunes installed in order to activate them. What the OP did should have worked.

  • How to use ip 4 as ipod only  with phone operating

When on holiday in foreign country  i only want to use the ipod / on the phone  .  Is there a way to do this   thankyou for your help  John

To add, you can actually enable airplane mode, then go into your wifi settings and turn on just wifi data.  That way all the telephone functions are disabled (no calls or SMS texts, and no cellular data possible), but you can still use free public wifi hotspots when available.
