Using javascript to control playback

I'm trying to figure out how to use javascript to control
playback of a captivate-movie.
I want to control the playback (play, pause and so on) using
javascript only. The playback-control in captivate does not "blend
in" with the design on our website. I want to make a custom
html/javascript playback-control.
I was hoping that the captivate-player could be controlled
easily with javascript, perhaps something like this:

Any suggestions?

Have you considered creating your own Captivate playback
controls? That might be another option. You can do that with a good
image editor and some spare time. To see examples of what I'm
talking about, try:

Paul Dewhurst, an Adobe Community Expert for Captivate has
specific instructions for building your own playbars on his
web-site "raisingaimee".

Hope this helps - in any case,
welcome to the Captivate User's Community!
Thanks for the tip Larry! I will take a look at the link in
your post.
We already have a design for playback-control on our site
(for embedded windows media player), which blends perfertly into
our existing design. I really hope that it's possible to control
the captivate-move with pure javascript. But I will "play around"
wit the "bmp toolbars" feature. Thanks!

  • Using javascript to control the browser

    Hi all,
    One of the most requested features on our first Breeze
    project was a "quit" button. The easiest way to do so in an HTML
    environment is to use the command
    javascript: window.close();
    Type this into the address bar on your browser, and hit
    return. Isn't that neat?
    Okay, the scripting language in Flash (Actionscript) can
    simulate typing something in the address bar with the command
    getURL ("javascript: window.close();");
    ...all we have to do is add that actionscript to the
    onRelease event handler for a button in Flash. Then, add the button
    to your PowerPoint before you use Presenter, and when the student
    clicks it... voila!
    This same trick can be used to replace that MacroDobe©
    logo in the Breeze player. This time, when the user clicks the
    button, we'll use javascript to pop up an alert box with a clever
    message:
    getURL ("javascript: alert('Aren't we clever?');";
    This button has to be small, around 50 x 29 pixels, to
    properly replace the logo. To actually replace it, you need to
    publish your presentation to the hard drive like normal. Next, find
    the folder you published to, and place a copy of your "button.swf"
    file in the "data" subfolder. Then, edit (don't "open") the
    vconfig.xml file in the same subfolder using notepad. Near the top,
    you'll find an entry that says:
    <uireplace name="logo" value= "" />
    place the name of your button file between the quotation
    marks and save:
    <uireplace name="logo" value= "button.swf" />
    When you load up the training next time, the logo will have
    changed to your button.
    You'll have to do this every time you publish the training,
    as Presenter deletes & recreates all those subfolders each time
    you do. BTW, MacroDobe© does offer a small applet to parse
    this xml file for you... but they want 5 grand per copy. I'm
    thinking notepad works just as well :)
    cheers!

    The biggest difficulty with a Swing Applet is that it needs the latest version of the JVM to run and many people don't have this installed on their PC. You can set the Aplet tags to download the plug-in but it can discourage users and may not always work. I would only use a Swing Applet for webapps with a limited client base.

  • How to control Flash Player playback using JavaScript?

    I have a local file-based web page (HTML file) containing an embedded YouTube video.
    Now I want to write some JavaScript to control the Player's playback parameters, like volume, mute, play, stop etc., using JavaScript in the file. However, I don't seem to be able to access any of these function.
    Can someone please enlighten me on what I need to do to be able to control Flash Player from JavaScript?

    I'm not acquainted with Flash too much, I'm afraid... Both paged didn't give any example I could leverage.
    I'm searching for something equivalent to something like this:
    document.getElementById("MyMoviePlayer").mute();

  • Controlling shockwave content (dcr) from a web page using javascript

    Hi,
    Is it possible to control shockwave content (dcr; object="application/x-director") from a web page using javascript?
    I believe this is possible using 'FSCommand' in Flash...
    I'd like to use HTML to do something like:
    - html_object[1].go(10);
    to send playback to frame 10.
    Thanks.
    Mark

    Sean,
    Thanks - this is exactly what I was looking for.
    'Shockingly' difficult ( pun intended :-)
    Someone really put in some effort on this.
    Very creative solution, putting a flash ( swf ) component in a director project and communicating indirectly through the flash element.
    Apparently, Javascript can communicate with the SWF file & the SWF file can communicate with the DCR file, but it is not possible to have Javascript communicate directly with the DCR. Too bad.
    After looking over this example I think I'll rethink my project.
    Thanks again.

  • How to control SWF Video using JavaScript?

    Hi,
    I'm developing a web page which will use Flash Videos. I need
    to control the video without using a typical skin. The current tool
    I'm using to convert my wmv to SWF FLV is Coffee Cup. A hex edit
    suggests this is a Version 8 SWF.
    I am trying to write some javascript to control which Frame
    is displayed. I have seen code such as movie.TGotoFrame(...); and
    movie.GotoFrame, movie.StopPlay() etc. Unfortunately I cannot seem
    to use these methods. Eventually I suspected that my SWF simply did
    not make these methods available and when I run my video in my web
    page a RightClick shows a Context Menu that has no Reverse,
    Forward, Back options. Other SWF videos do have these options
    (obviously). This seems to prove that nothing I could code would
    make the GotoFrame work (ie no Forward (by one frame) option in
    menu suggests it could never work from javascript).
    Some Questions
    Is there a tool to examine a SWF to see what methods are
    available to javascript control? (expose the API) and is there a
    setting required in the <object> setup to enable javascript
    interaction?
    Is there something about SWF V8 files that is the problem or
    is likely that the CoffeeCup Web Video Player can only make
    partially functioning SWF Videos?
    What is the difference between GotoFrame and TGotoFrame and
    have these perhaps been superceeded by something else (there is an
    Adobe page which suggests they are only available up to Version 5
    (not sure if that means Version 5 of SWF files or Version 5 of the
    FlashPlayer - to add to my confusion).
    I'm not currently a Flash type developer and have no tools to
    speak off and don't know ActionScript. I'm thinking of heading in
    the Flash direction but not sure how to move forward.
    Cheers
    Stuart

    Thanks Alex,

    I have a Greek friend who when I asked him how he was getting
    on with his dissertation project stated "in Greece we have a saying
    - every start is different".
    In this case my start is to dip a toe in the Flash water and
    not get scalded.
    Anyhow,
    One clarification from the CoffeeCup forum helped me to
    understand that my SWF used an external FLV and that may explain
    why the rightclick context menu did not have the more movie
    specific Back, Forward etc. Sounds plausible. So assume external
    FLV.

    it is very easy to add a small script into the root timeline
    of your SWF file
    A little hand holding here would be appreciated. I have
    downloaded the Flex SDK. Can I use this free tool to do what you
    suggest? Using MXML and ActionScript. If so, a little bit more info
    would help.
    quote:
    That's all, it should work. Of course, you can tell me that
    your movie
    already has an onEnterFrame() eventhandler at the root
    timeline.
    What's a problem? Just create an empty movieclip and add this
    script
    into its frame 1 (it maybe the only frame). But do not forget
    to
    change "this.xxxx" to "_root.xxxx" within such script.
    Hhhmmm. A bit stumped. I've had a look at the SWF using
    FlashDig. I noticed what appears to be Assembly Language (Push,
    Pops, Jumps etc) and presumably in amongst all of that may be an
    onEnterFrame. Perhaps linked to a DefineFunction2 node.
    Unfortunately the SWF is very large (60K) and there is no
    search/find tool so that makes finding functions a bit harder than
    expected. Struggling a little with the concept of _root and Level0
    etc.
    I assume you are suggesting manually building a replacement
    SWF (empty movieclip?) if the onEventHandler happens to be used for
    something else. Presumably set/getVariables only interacts with
    this function so if it is 'booked' in my SWF I would be in a spot
    of bother with your suggested approach?
    I wonder if you are assuming I have some sort of Flash tool.
    Possibly like this one shown in this tutorial
    WebWasp
    Panorama tutorial
    Note. The panorama is actually close to what I eventually
    want to do except I intend to make a video of a scene by rotating
    clockwise by 360 degrees. Then add buttons onto the SWF (or DHTML)
    which communicates with the SWF to move forward or back through the
    video. Moving forward would be like a clockwise rotation and moving
    back would create anticlockwise rotation. This explains the need to
    GotoFrame (or similar). From that perspective I don't need to
    become a Flash guru (for now) and can't justify buying all the
    expensive flash tools for this one (apparently) simple task: Frame
    by Frame control of an external FLV via the SWF.
    Note. I've started using SWFObject. Might this library help?
    In summary.
    How do I add the onEnterFrame ActionScript sample (or
    something similar) into a SWF using only the Flex SDK command line
    tools or similar in order to control an external FLV?
    Cheers

  • Fetching Manager Attribute For The User In PeoplePicker Control Using JavaScript/JQuery

    Hi Everyone,

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you want to get the user’s manager, department and title.
    We can use the GetUserProfileByName operation of the SPServices to achieve it, you can download it in the
    CodePlex.
    You can first retrieve the user of the People Picker control.
    http://sympmarc.com/2012/04/22/working-with-sharepoint-people-pickers-with-jquery-a-new-function-called-findpeoplepicker/
    http://sharepoint.stackexchange.com/questions/80839/unable-to-get-user-name-from-the-people-picker-control-using-jquery
    Then we can retrieve the user’s information using the SPServices.
    I have made a simple code demo to retrieve the user’s manager, department and title as below, you can have a look at it.
    <script src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.10.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://sp/Shared Documents/jquery.SPServices-2014.01.min.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    // When the body is loaded, the onload event handler executes each function whose name is contained in this array.
    $(function(){
    var managerName;
    var title;
    var department;
    $().SPServices({
    operation: "GetUserProfileByName",
    async: false,
    AccountName: $().SPServices.SPGetCurrentUser(),
    completefunc: function (xData, Status) {
    console.log($(xData.responseXML).find("PropertyData").parent().html);
    $(xData.responseXML).find("PropertyData > Name:contains('Manager')").each(function() {
    managerName = $(this).parent().find("Values").text();
    //alert("the manager is"+managerName);
    $(xData.responseXML).find("PropertyData > Name:contains('Title'):eq(0)").each(function() {
    title = $(this).parent().find("Values").text();
    //alert("the Title is"+title);
    $(xData.responseXML).find("PropertyData > Name:contains('Department')").each(function() {
    department = $(this).parent().find("Values").text();
    //alert("the Department is"+department);
    var obj1=managerName+title+department;
    $("#Test").text(obj1);
    </script>
    <span id="Test"></span>

  • Control playback of embedded MP3 using AxAcroPDF

    I have a PDF file that has an embedded MP3.  I would like to be able to control it (mainly pause and play) from the AxAcroPDF control.  The documentation doesn't really tell how this might be done.  There is an execCommand function for the control, but I can't find any documentation on how to use it.
    Dan

    I don't mean to be obtuse here, but I downloaded the SDK and looked at the documentation and can't find anywhere where it references how to do this.  Is there someone who actually knows how to do this (not vague references, but the actual nuts and bolts of how to accomplish it)?  Again, I've got a VB.Net app, I want to be able to show a PDF with an embedded MP3 and control (just pause and play) the audio.  I tried the AxAcroPDF control, but then at the suggestion of someone here I used the WebBrowser control.  Both display the PDF and allow the use the start/pause/play the audio through the on document control, but I want to be able to do this programmatically.
    So anyone actually know how this is done?  An example would be great.

  • How to use JavaScript to Open a link automatically

    Is there a method (using JavaScript) to allow a user clicked link to open the link through a “intermediary” page?
    For example, say I have a web page with a embedded Flash file that contains links to several different (outside) web pages. The behavior I want is that the user clicks a link (within the Flash file), a HTML window opens (over the 1st HTML/Flash window) with the new content, leaving the original Flash/HTML window displayed in the background. The user reads the new content. The user can then close the newer window and be back at the displayed HTML/Flash file.
    The twist is that the link embedded in the referring Flash/HTML file goes to a “intermediary page”. Call that the “collector” page. I control that page. On that page I have collected (in a list) all the actual outside URLs (I do this so that I can easily change the URLs using HTML rather than having to edit the Flash file.) The Flash file contains essentially the same URL for each outside location (plus a variable unique to a specific URL).
    The user should not ever actually see this intermediary/collector page. Instead, they click the link, a variable is passed from the referring page to the collector page and fires the corresponding link automatically (replacing the content in the newly created window). Since the link fires automatically the content in the new window (initially created by the collector page) changes to the destination content.
    Is this possible?
    What JavaScript functions are used?
    How are the referring links constructed in the Flash so the variable is passed to the collector page?
    How does the “collector” page auto open the actual content?
    If anyone can point me to descriptions on how this might be done I’d certainly appreciate it.

    >is there a way i can call javascript without security checking?
    It wouldn't be security if you could just bypass it. Did you read all
    the security notes? You might be able to do something with trusted
    functions, but I'm not sure how that would integrate with a plug-in.

  • Using javascript to detect the onclick event over a datatable row

    Hi all,
    I'm working with JSF 1.2 R.I. and I would like to add some javascript to my datatable to be able to control the onclick event on a row.
    At the moment I have just added a checkbox to be able to know which row the user wants to select but I'm not satisfied with this solution.
    <h:dataTable
    value="#{person_iupopulations_Observation.customer}" var="customer"
    rowClasses="evenRow,oddRow"
    cellspacing="0">
    <h:column>
    <f:facet name="header">
    <h:outputText value="Select" />
    </f:facet>
    <h:selectBooleanCheckbox value="" onclick="getRow(this)">
    </h:selectBooleanCheckbox>
    </h:column>
    <h:column>
    <f:facet name="header">
    <h:outputText value="Name" />
    </f:facet>
    <h:outputText value="#{customer.Name}"></h:outputText>
    </h:column>
    </h:dataTable>
    What I would like to achieve is:
    When the user clicks the row (wherever, not only the checkbox) the checkbox changes to the new value depending, off course, on the user's selection.
    For this purpose I would need to add the onclick event to every row and associate it to a javascript function to update the checkbox.
    Can anybody help me please.
    I appreciate any suggestion.
    Thanks in advance!

    I am looking for answers on how to use javascript to detect the onclick event over a datatable row . I have a selectBooleanCheckBox in one of the columns in the every row in the table. On click of the checkbox in any row of the table, I want to get some values from the selected row and also verify that the rest of the checkboxes in all the other columns are unchecked. I want to do this using javascript. If any of you have answers, please repsond. Thanks.

  • Error when using Javascript to scroll page in iFrame

    Hi again!
    I'm using a small Javascript to control the scrolling of a page loaded in an iFrame:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var timer_id;
    function scroll_iframe(frm,inc,dir) {
      if (timer_id) clearTimeout(timer_id);
      if (window.frames[frm]) {
        if (dir == "v") frames[frm].scrollBy(0, inc);
        else window.frames[frm].scrollBy(inc, 0);
        timer_id = setTimeout("scroll_iframe('" + frm + "'," + inc + ",'" + dir + "')", 20);
    function stopScroll() { if (timer_id) clearTimeout(timer_id); }
    </script>
    <a href="javascript:;" onmouseover="scroll_iframe('menu', -4, 'v'); return true" onmouseout="stopScroll(); return true">Up</a>
    <a href="javascript:;" onmouseover="scroll_iframe('menu', 4, 'v'); return true" onmouseout="stopScroll();  return true">Down</a>
    Running this results the error: "Adobe AIR runtime security violation for JavaScript code in the application security sandbox (window.setTimeOut)".
    I've read the page about "Avoiding security-related JavaScript errors" but I don't know how to implement the changes proposed in my script.
    Could anyone be so kind and help me with this?
    Thanks!

    Just wanted to say that I solved the problem...
    After long testing I came up with two functions (one for up and one for down) that have the following code at the end:
    timer_id = setTimeout(function(){scroll_iframe('up')}, 20); //move up
    timer_id = setTimeout(function(){scroll_iframe('down')}, 20); //move down
    I also stumbled on to another problem: if I set the scroll property from the iFrame to "no", so that the scroll bar is hidden, I'm not able to use the "scrollBy(x, y)" method.
    So what I did was use "frames['iframe'].document.getElementById('menu_content_div').style.top" to change the position of the content div inside the menu page. I had to put some restrictions so that the user isn't able to scroll the menu endlessly up or down, but then it worked like a charm!
    If anyone whants to do something similar, this is the code I ended up with:
    var timer_id;
    var position = 0;
         function scroll_iframe(direction) {
            if (timer_id) clearTimeout(timer_id);
            if (window.frames['iframe']) {
                if (direction == "up" && position<0) {
                    position += 8;
                    frames['iframe'].document.getElementById('menu_content_div').style.top = position+"px";
                    timer_id = setTimeout(function(){scroll_iframe('up')}, 40);
                menuContentDiv = frames['iframe'].document.getElementById('menu_content_div')
                heightPx = document.defaultView.getComputedStyle(menuContentDiv,null).getPropertyValue('height');
                heightValue = heightPx.slice(0,(heightPx.length-2)); //removes the "px at the end of heightPx
                height = (heightValue-387)-2*(heightValue-387); //sets how much the menu can scroll up until it gets to its end - depends on the iframe height
                if (dir == "down" && position>height) {
                    position -= 8;
                    frames['iframe'].document.getElementById('menu_content_div').style.top = position+"px";
                    timer_id = setTimeout(function(){scroll_iframe('down')}, 40);
         function stopScroll() {
         if (timer_id) clearTimeout(timer_id);
    Scroll down: onMouseDown="scroll_iframe('down'); return true" onMouseUp="stopScroll(); return true"
    Scroll up: onMouseDown="scroll_iframe('up'); return true" onMouseUp="stopScroll(); return true"

  • How to use Javascript, C#, or Java to automatically fill out a PDF file using ACROBAT PRO

    Hi.
    I have purchased a copy of acrobat pro and am currently using it to try to create a method of populating certain fields in a PDF file.
    This particualar scenerio is a printable cerficiate, it has a spot for the persons First Name, Last Name, and other basic info.
    So we have an exisiting editable PDF, a database with the user's info, and a ASP.NET web server, and of course Acrobat Pro.
    How can I use these components to create an auto fill script?
    Ideally, we'd genereate these certs on the fly, and allow users to download them.
    A code sample would be awesome.
    Thanks!

    I've discovered that you can create a "PDF Form" and edit that form with Javascript.
    My question now is, what is the prefered method for controlling the pdf form?
    I would like to include the PDF file in an HTML page and edit the form fields using javascript in that HTML page.
    I think that this is how developers are meant to work with dynamic pdf files.
    In the acrobat javascript reference, it only shows an example using the acrobat javascript console.
    If anyone has used Javascript with PDFs, I would highly appricate some input.

  • Dynamic Page that uses javascript to run an executable on the client's pc

    I have an .exe file on a shared network that has to be called and executed from portal. The below code works as standalone but not from a dynamic page or an HTML portlet. Any ideas?
    <html>
    <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript">
    function runApp()
    var shell = new ActiveXObject("WScript.shell");
    shell.run('"c:/CstatsWeeklyreport.exe"',1,true);
    </script>
    <body>
    <input type="button" name="button1" value="Run Notepad" onClick="runApp()" >
    </INPUT>
    </body>
    </html>

    Thanks D, but that's not what I'm looking for. That changes which application a file opens with when you download it. That's not what I need for this situation. Here's a little more detail.
    The clients will have an application on their hard drive; it can be any application, even a custom application that they developed themselves. Then, they open a web page with a listbox full of items. Depending on which item they select, a query will return a file path to the .exe file itself. The .exe file resides on the client's hard drive, not on the server. So they're not downloading anything. Depending on the filepath returned by the query, the browser needs to start the process and open the .exe file for them.
    So let's say I have developed a simple text editor called Tedit. I have a file on my hard drive - "C:\TextEditor\bin\debug\TEdit.exe". When they click the open button, that file path is returned from the database. Then the javascript is called to start the process and open that program.
    Again, nothing is getting downloaded, the application resides on the user's hard drive and there is no file to associate it with.
    This can be done in IE using an ActiveX control. And it used to be possible in Firefox using the nsIFile or nsIProcess objects. But since FF15 that's not available anymore, so the javascript throws an error telling them that their permission is denied.
    What I need, is a javascript that will launch the .exe file from the user's hard drive without downloading anything.

As we know, you could define the page destinations in af:goMenuItem to go to another page when user clicked, but af:menu itself cannot be redirected to another page. Well, the user case wants the menu itself could be redirected if user click on it.
    So I am thinking using JavaScript to do this: when the af:menu gets clicked, redirect to another page. BUT, I looked over the ADF Faces Javascript API and was not able to find that piece of code to do this. Any help???
    Another work around for the user case scenario is to use HTML marks + CSS/JavaScript instead of af:menu and af:goMenuItem but this changes the scope of technology although it's not hard to do
    Any other idea to accomplish the user case other than what I could think of ?
    Thanks Guys!
    Jay

    Hi,
    1 - you can have a hidden command item to do the navigation based on a control flow case. In this case, you access the command component from JavaScript create a new ActionEvent and queue it
    2 - JavaScript can use an af:serverListener to call into a server side managed bean method to perform the navigation
    there is no JavaScript API for navigation in ADF Faces because navigation in JavaServer Faces is an event driven framework and we don't support developers fighting the framework.
