Using JSPWiki Servlet within JSF

I have got the fundamentals of my JSF webApp working
Now I want to incorporate a JSPWiki page within my JSF page
What is the best way of sorting this out
I have been thinking along the lines of creating an application scope managed bean in which I can initalise a WikiEngine reference
public static WikiEngine getInstance(javax.servlet.ServletContext context,
java.util.Properties props)
OR
public static WikiEngine getInstance(javax.servlet.ServletConfig config,
java.util.Properties props)
How do I obtain ServletContext for the WikiEngine from inside my JSF ManagedBean
Obviously my web.xml has
<servlet>
<servlet-name>FacesServlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>javax.faces.webapp.FacesServlet</servlet-class>
<load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
</servlet>
and
<servlet>
<servlet-name>WikiServlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>com.ecyrd.jspwiki.WikiServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>
But I can't find anything in the JSF Javadocs that is the equivalent of
public ServletContext getServletContext()
in the Servlet APIs
I'd appreciate some clues
Thanks

Try this to get the ServletContext in your ManagedBean:
FacesContext facesCtx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
ExternalContext extCtx = facesCtx.getExternalContext();
ServletContext servletCtx = (ServletContext) extCts.getContext();I think that will do it.

  • Using TAG Attributes within JSF Tags

    I'm using some .tag files for templating purposes. I'm using two tag attributes via <@% attribute %> directive. How can i access this attribute to do something like follows.

    Hola Alberto.
    Any luck? Did you worked that around?
    I'm just trying to do the same thing...
    Tried to do something like:
    <%@attribute name="enabled" type="java.lang.String" %>

    Let me know, please!

  • Use of filter to JSF faces servlet

    Hi
    I have a JSF application which is secured by a custom security framework (similar to SITE MINDER). The security framework after authentication passes the authenticated user name within a in-memory session cookie.
    The entire user information like his group and access restrictions (field / UI compoonent level) resides in the application database
    I have used a filter to JSF Faces servlet to retrieve the user information from the database and storing in session.
    Is this use of filter a good approach?

    I would fetch such information only once and store it in a simple session scoped bean after a successful login, but I am weird for wanting to do things in a simple way.
    A filter can work to validate if the user is still "logged in" (IE. his/her session didn't expire), but since this is JSF you could also use a phase listener for such a purpose.

  • When is it appropriate to use a servlet in a JSP/JSF environment?

    I have inherited a fairly old JSP-based application. I know that I need to update its technologies, in particular the use of AJAX so that I don't need to keep refreshing the page each time I want more data from the server. The problem is that I don't know a great deal about other technologies. There seem to be so many conflicting opinions about the way to go regarding servlets and JSP and JSF (and possibly JavaBeans). I am probably going to start using JSF and AJAX. I mention this to give you some background info. My real question is: when is best/appropriate to use a servlet? From what I have seen I do not want to use a servlet for generating HTML output - that seem just so last decade! But do they still have a good use over more modern technologies? Also, when is it appropriate to use JavaBeans? Are JavaBeans a thing of the past (or just plain inappropriate) for web applications?
    Regards,

    I suggest going to the bookstore and looking for a book on JSF and reading it cover to cover. It may tell you where servlets come into the picture (if at all). I suggest paying attention to MVC design that it discusses, and working through the examples before working on your project (assuming you have the time). Then creating a simple project and refactor it over and over to meet MVC.
    For your project, I suggest just doing ONE JSF page (and its underlying database access) and refactor it over and over again (MVC) before doing the other JSF pages. This way, you dont have to refactor 34 JSF pages to correct the same mistake appearing in all the pages (saves a LOT of time).
    I don't know enough about AJAX to really comment on it. However, I would ask myself if refreshing the JSF page is really enough of a concern for your end-users to make it worth while to use AJAX on this project.

  • Problem using javascript to submit jsf form, values not submitted

    Greetings!
    I have a t:selectOneMenu where I want the page to be submitted when they change the selected value. At this point, I am able to get the form to submit and reload the page, which is all fine. The problem is that none of the values from the page are not set in the backing bean. I have break points on the setter methods that are not being hit.
    I have tried a number of things from searching multiple forums, but here are snippets from my latest version...
    <h:form>
    <t:commandLink id="hiddenLink" forceId="true" value="test link"
    action="#{pc_PageX.doBtnHiddenLinkAction}"></t:commandLink>
    <t:selectOneMenu id="pageList_top" forceId="true" value="#{pc_PageX.ValueX}"
         onchange="jspellSync(); submitPageX();">
         <f:selectItems value="#{pc_PageX.ListX}" />
    </t:selectOneMenu>
    </h:form>
    function submitPageX(){
         var hiddenLink = document.getElementById("hiddenLink");
         hiddenLink.click();
    }Note that the <t:commandLink> is not hidden, though it will be in the final version if I can get this to work.
    If I click the commandLink myself, the page is submitted with all the page values as expected. If I change the list value, thus using javascript to fire the commandLink's click event, the page is submitted with NO values.
    Can anyone come up with an explanation for this behavior? Or better yet, a solution?
    A couple other things I've tried...
    - Not using a commandLink and using jsf's submit function -> onchange="jspellSync(); submit();"
    - Clicking the link using other ways -> hiddenLink.fireEvent('onclick');
    If all else fails, I'll just add a button that they have to click to submit the form.

    I recall this problem in one of the ancient JSF versions. Which JSF version do you use? Do you have any room to upgrade to latest? We're using an IBM implementation of JSF, which is at version 7.0. The IBM implementation appears to be built on the JSF base 1.1.That's not an IBM JSF implementation, they do not have any one, they just have some component libraries which runs on top of some JSF implementation. RAD/WSAD ships by default with Sun JSF RI. Try upgrading to at least 1.1_02 which you can download from the aforementioned link. There's a gap of 2 years (and inherently a lot of bugfixes) compared to 1.1. If the application server used supports Servlet 2.5, you could even upgrade to the latest 1.2.
    We've had other issues with the IBM implementation, which could be the cause in this case too. We've been talking about switching to MyFaces, but there is one feature of the IBM version that we like. It's basically a script collector (hx:scriptCollector) that allows us to do pre-processing on the page.As said before, IBM does not have a JSF implementation. So replacing RI by MyFaces wouldn't make any difference.

  • Using a servlet in a jsp

    Hi, I have recently been having problems with embedding a servlet within a JSP. I have attempted to do this by using a frame within the JSP and using JSP include tags however, nothing seems to display. The reason why I want to do this is because I need to take advantage of servlet persistence which JSPs do not have, plus, I want to use the JSP to refresh the page produced by the servlet every so often using AJAX.
    Any ideas? Thanks,
    --R

    A JSP becomes a pure servlet on compilation. What persistence are u looking in a JSP ?
    One reason you do not get anything is I am not tried this but I dont think its going to interpret the servlet code very well in the JSP page.
    An include JSP tag includes another jsp/file inline and not sure if he can do a servlet there ?

  • Using the servlets with IIS

    hi,
    In a portal project using ASP and IIS server, i need to develop an application which connect to the web and retrieve documents from it.
    I choose a servlet technology to do this.
    I have two question :
    1) If the portal uses IIS can i use Servlets within ASP pages?
    is it necessary to use the package server.jar with IIS, or we can only use IIS ?
    2)Can we connect to an URL page and retrieve it with servlets
    like we do with this portion of code :
    target = new URL(requete);
    HttpURLConnection fetch = (HttpURLConnection)target.openConnection( );
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(fetch.getInputStream( )));
    If yes how ?
    thank you

    Umm, IIS runs ASP pages, which can be written either in VBScript or JScript. Servlets cannot be embedded in or called from within ASP pages. I guess they could be invoked via an HTTP redirect or by creating under-the-hood HTTP connection to the servlet, but that's nasty and circuitous. I'd really recommend finding a way to do what you want in ASP.
    Servlets/JSP's require a Java-based container to run in. There are Servlet containers that work with IIS - check out Tomcat @ jakarta.apache.org
    As for the second question, any Java code can be run from within a Servlet - what's stopping you from using that exact code snippet to do what you want to do?

  • Legacy Servlet to JSF

    Hi,
    I am writing an application in JSF that will replace another Java Servlet but perform the same functions. The first step is to establish the front page in JSF with all the options, but link to the legacy servlet for all those options, and replace them one by one until the legacy servlet is gone.
    I would like to run both applications in seperate containers, and use HTTP to redirect back and forth. Problem is, I don't know how to tell the legacy servlet to use the sessionid it has already established.
    The first time I call to the legacy servlet, it will create a session, and I can acquire the sessionid from HttpSession.getSessionId(), then pass that back (somehow, haven't figured out yet how to call into the JSF servlet either). But once that has been done, I can provide that sessionid in any legacy servlet invocation.
    Is this simple to do? How would I go about it?
    The next problem I have is securing this transmission, which would probably entail encryption. Perhaps I should just be running these two servlets in the same context and avoid all this confusion.
    Ideas?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Weblogic.utils.NestedRuntimeException when using javax.servlet.Filter

    IDE: JDev 10gR3.4 & JDev 11gR2.3
    ViewController technology: JSF/ADF Faces
    Example code flow:

    Else redirect to page1.jsf
    page1.jsf has a button that sets the value on the session scope after clicking.

  • Problem with displaying BLOB images on JSP page using a servlet

    hi. I have a big problem with displaying BLOB images using JSP. I have a servlet that connects to the oracle database, gets a BLOB image , reads it, and then displays it using a BinaryStream. The problem is , this works only when i directly call that servlet, that is http://localhost:8080/ImageServlet. It doesn't work when i try to use that servlet to display my image on my JSP page (my JSP page displays only a broken-image icon ) I tried several coding approaches with my servlet (used both Blob and BLOB objects), and they work just fine as long as i display images explicitly using only the servlet.
    Here's what i use : ORACLE 10g XE , Eclipse 3.1.2, Tomcat 5.5.16 , JDK 1.5
    here is one of my image servlet's working versions (the essential part of it) :
                   BLOB blob=null;
              rset=st.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM IMAGES WHERE ID=1");
              while (rset.next())
                   blob=((OracleResultSet)rset).getBLOB(2);
              response.reset();
              response.setContentType("image/jpeg");

    I turns out that it wasn't that big of a problem after all. All i had to do was to take the above code and place it into another JSP page instead of into a servlet like i did before. Then i just used that page as a source for my IMG tag in my first JSP. It works perfectly well. Why this doesn't work for servlets i still don't know, but it's not a problem form me anymore . Ofcourse if someone knows the answer , go ahead and write. I would still appriceatte it.
    here's the magic tag : <img src="ImageJSP.jsp" border="0"  > enjoy : )

  • Long running reports using java servlets

    Hello,
    I'm running into a problem using java servlets to produce database reports and sending them back to the client browser as excel or html. The problem comes into play when the user has submitted two reports then goes to run a third and the browser hangs. I realized now that this is because of the two active connections that the user already has to the app server. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get around this? I'm trying to now write the report to the server, and provide the browser with a url, but it seams as though the connection isn't totally closed even though I close the response printwriter.... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....

    Unfortunately I dont have an answer to your question, but:
    If the reports are large/long running, should they be generated on demand? You could schedule the reports to be generated every day, month or whenever appropriate, stored on the server and then quickly pulled by the user whenever needed.

  • Can i use a servlet for as a

    the SDN,
    I need to create a middleware server that reads requests from a database then forwards these requests to the "real" servers. The reason i referred to the app as a "middleware SERVER" is because this app will be started once and will run forever, (if no problems come up), but actually the "middleware server" that i need to create will be a "client" to the "real servers" which will process the requests - so i shall refer to the system that i need to design as a "forwarding client" instead of "middleware server" - to avoid confusion.
    After my "Forwarding Client" reads a request from the DB it wil forward the request to the servers using XMLRPC (over http).
    I would like to know from those who know more : which is the better approach to solving this problem.
    According to me these are the closest options to designing the "Forwarding Client":
    1) create a java application that uses the "custom networking" packages of java to forward the data to the server, see packages here: http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/TOC.html#sockets
    2) develop the functionality of my "Forwarding Client" in a servlet. This is easier since forwarding of the data (using HTTP POST) is very easy in servlets.
    But there is a problem that could arise, and this brings out my main question:
    -> since this application will need to run for a very long time (probably perpetually) - are there any limitations of having a servlet run for a very long period of time? any memory issues or any other potential issues? What about container issues? Are servlet engines such as tomcat designed for such kinds of servlets?
    To help understand the scenario, this is an overview of the logic:
    <code>
    do
    select one unprocessed request from the DB
    process the request -by forwarding the request to the server
    receive and read the response from the server
    save the response in the DB
    while(true)
    </code>
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    I will try to answer in english for all readers (I am french). It's a very complex problem. If you want to use a servlet as a proxy it will not be "invisible" for end-user. All your calls will look like this :
    http://www.foo.com/ProxyServlet?realURL=http://www.foo.com/RealServlet
    Did you accept this kind of solution? If not, can you explain me what exactly you have to do.
    For the second question : you have to re-write all your request using HTTPURLConnection.

  • Using APEX_MAIL from within a procedure invoked from DBMS_JOB

    I have done a lot of googling and wasted a couple of days getting nowhere and would appreciate some help. But I do know that in order to use APEX_MAIL from within a DBMS_JOB that I should
    "In order to call the APEX_MAIL package from outside the context of an Application Express application, you must call apex_util.set_security_group_id as in the following example:

  • How to display an xml file using a servlet with the styles given in an XSL

    Dear Developer...
    i have xml and xsl files.
    Now i want to display the html output produced by the xsl and xml using a servlet...give me any samplecode.
