Using nvidia-settings without X/over ssh

I have a computer with an nvidia GTX 670 that I want to control remotely. However, I have problems using nvidia-settings over ssh. When trying to use it, I get this error:
ERROR: Cannot open display ':0.0'.
When a user is logged in an xfce session locally, I can use nvidia-settings without issue, using the command line over ssh. As soon as I log out from the xfce session, I get
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
ERROR: Cannot open display ':0.0'.
ERROR: Unable to query attribute GPUCoreTemp specified in query '[gpu:0]/GPUCoreTemp' (no Display connection).
How can I use nvidia-settings without the need for a user to be logged in locally?

I am trying to do the same thing with a GT 240. I found something promising here:
https://sites.google.com/site/akohlmey/ … s-X-Server
Since you do have a local monitor, it may be easier not having to fake one. I don't have a monitor, I haven't gotten around to trying the Xorg stuff yet.

  • Nvidia settings not saves and applied on setup

I have this problem using nvidia settings for the nvidia driver 295.33-1.  I am trying to tweak gamma levels and varius otehr settings using nvidia control panel.  I save the settings in .nvidia-settings-rc in my home folder, but when I log out the settings are restored to their defaults.
I the following bash script to load the nvidia settings.
    #!/bin/bash
    nvidia-settings --load-config-only
    nvidia-settings -a InitialPixmapPlacement=2
However the only way now to apply my selected settings is to open nvidia control center every time I log in.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Run as root?? That's obviously not what's intended - it's saved in $HOME.
How can you expect the setting to take effect, when it's not even present? I see no "pix"-related line in ~/.nvidia-settings-rc . You could ask for it to be included, in the nvidia forum.
Running "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" changes the settings for that session only, that's correct. What's the problem with that?

    hi
    i use nvidia-settings to adjust my graphic card setup. I haven't used it in a while though (in fact, i think it was using kde about 8 months ago), and tried to fire it up today on openbox, this is what i get;

I have never installed murrine ever! is it as simple an issue to fix as install murrine??
i tried to pacman it & yaourt it, but its not found! before I go about finding the source code to compile, i was wondering if anyone else has any ideas?
    thanks

  • Changing PowerMizer settings of Nvidia driver without restarting X

Is it possible to change PowerMizer settings of Nvidia driver WITHOUT restarting X?
I know this normally is not possible, but I'm asking about some hax0r tricks that might exist.
I would like to include those settings in automatic power saving script, but of course to do that, it has to work on a continuously running environment.

    I've written crap!!!
    This is the way:
    gdmflexiserver --xnest
if you want a window with a new login!!!
    and
    gdmflexiserver
if you just want another x session  (Tere will be two of them in the same time).
You should .xinitrc alon, and use a display manager (such as gdm)
if you want this just modify in /etc/inittab
    :x:5:respawn:/opt/gnome/bin/gdm -nodaemon
it should be the last line.
respawn means that if you close the x serv, it will restart

  • HT4995 Internationally using Location Services without having data charges.  What settings should use on my iPhone 5?

I'm traveling to Europe and I want to use Location Services without having data charges.  What settings should use on my iPhone 5?  I want to be able to use Trip Advisor City Guides Application to tour around cities for free.  I have a Verizon International Plan for my trip, but it is still pricey.  I would like to keep my iPhone cell services on for incoming calls, but I want to prevent international data charges.  Thanks for your help!

You don't "choose" to use th 3g network.
If you have paid for it in your plan and 3g coverage is available, your phone will automatically use it when necessary.
3g provides faster internet speeds than 2g, so you can watch video or download stuff faster. Wifi is normally faster than 3g.
Your iphone gps is "assisted", meaning it uses network data to calculate your position.
Also, you would still need the network to download maps, directions etc as they are not on your device.

Can you use Apple Pay without also needing to use a passcode to unlock your phone? I don't see that combination of options in settings.

I too don't like this. I would like to be able to use Touch ID for purchases on the App Store, Apple Pay, & Apple Store without having to use a passcode to unlock my phone. Why not allow the Touch ID to be app specific? Let us use it when we need it, not force us to use it for everything or nothing at all. That ***** that you have to set up a Passcode for your phone if you want to use Apple Pay. I didn't know about that. I haven't set that up yet because I'm waiting for them to support my credit card. Now I'm thinking I may not use Apple Pay. What a pain! Come on Apple, let us pick and choose what we want to lock down on our phones!!!

  • Use same nvidia-settings config in other X server.

I have been using Linux for a while and I have been playing all the games that can't be minimized on a separate X server, so I can use the desktop while playing. I use this script now: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ru … _X_display
But I have noticed that the nvidia-settings (antialiasing and all that) have no effect on the new X. I have tried adding nvidia-settings --load-settings-only to the game script (I launch the games with ./xinit script, and script contains "nvidia-settings --load-settings-only" and a call to the game), but it doesn't seems to work either.
I notice it because antialising/anisotropic filters aren't applied and there are some glitches on textures. If I run the game con the current X server, those filters are applied and textures are fine.
Anyone know what can I do to load the same configuration when running on another X server?
I'm using all latest software and Nvidia GT440.
    Thanks

I have been testing with nvidia-settings -q all, running it in another X server and redirecting the output to a file.
Then I diff'ed it with the result of running it on the desktop and the output was the same, so the config is loaded, but 1 line:
    Other X: Attribute 'GPUUtilization' (julio-linux:10[gpu:0]): graphics=31, memory=24, video=0, PCIe=1
    Desktop: Attribute 'GPUUtilization' (julio-linux:0[gpu:0]): graphics=0, memory=1, video=0, PCIe=0
While GPUUtilization attribute on desktop is always the same, when running another X server, this attribute on that X changes, those variables change randomly, I suspect about PCIe parameter. It looks for another GPU?? (I only have one).
Sometimes the PCIe parameter is the same, but not the others.
I have tried running another desktop too, (I use xfce) loading the xinitrc file with startx ~/.xinitrc --: 10, and run the game from there. The antialiasing/anisotropic filters were applied there, the game looked good.
I checked there the configuration and the GPUUtilization attribute was the same of main X server/desktop, It doesn't change when loading another desktop with .xinitrc.
So I think that the problem is when not loading a desktop, the attribute 'GPUUtilization' changes and this is what makes the driver not apply the settings there.
    How can I fix that?

  • Using FTPAdapter over SSH

I have an issue when i use SFTP, for some reason users are able to browse the system's root directory and other user's directories. Also some users don't have access to the FTPRoot alias and some do. If i connect using FTP everything is fine. Can someone shed some light on this issue.
    Thanks,
    Toros

There is absolutely no correlation between FTP and SFTP.
SFTP is actually a file transfer run over SSH and therefore subject to the normal account/shell restrictions, just as if the user logged in via SSH.
What you're confusing it with (easily done) is FTPS, which is SSL-encrypted FTP. This uses SSL/TLS to secure a FTP connection and is subject to the account restrictions defined in the FTP server, independent of the user's shell access.
So, in other words, SFTP uses a SSH session to transfer files. FTPS uses SSL to secure a FTP session.
There's no trivial way to prevent a SFTP user from walking through the directory tree since there's no difference between their SFTP session and an SSH session.

If this is the case, why not use a tool that was designed specifically for this purpose?  You could set up vnc and then forward the ports to run over ssh.  But I have been playing with x2go, which is a open-source NoMachine alternative.  It is super easy to set up and runs over ssh.  What is really cool is that it actually runs far better than plain ol' vnc with a super responsive desktop.
I don't really have much practical use for it, but after playing with vnc a bit and seeing the shitty performance that it can sometimes have, I heard about NoMachine and decided to give it a whirl.  I think the best part is that because it runs over ssh, it is as secure as your sshd setup is.  So if you want to open it up to face the greater internet, as long as you feel confident in doing that with ssh, there is no additional ports you need to open up or anything.

What DE are you using? (if any) I have a similar problem since the last Gnome 3.12, doesn't matter where I put the command "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" it just doesn't work. I have to either open the GUI or issue the command on the terminal for it to happen, I tried with ~/.config/autostart/ /etc/xdg/autostart/ with a .xprofile file, a .xinitrc, nothing works, I can't tell from where this problem originates. Other programs start just fine with the mentioned methods, then it must be something wrong with the way nvidia is invoked I guessing, a couple of months ago was working flawlessly.

  • Command line nvidia-settings output.

First off, I'm not sure if this thread should be here or in the hardware section, but since the issue is with the software, i've stuck it here for the moment.
Since nvclock doesn't work with my fermi cards (2 x gtx470s in sli) I'm using the cli of nvidia-settings in a munin plugin. After some faffing around getting the env set correctly and sufficient xhost permissions, everything is working, apart from the clock speeds.
    nvidia-settings -tq [gpu:0]/gpucurrentclockfreqsstring
should output the current clock frequencies of the gpu. However, all it displays is the lowest frequencies - for me, the output is always
    nvclock=50, memclock=135, processorclock=101
even when the card is loaded (unigine benchmark) and the nvidia-settings gui shows the correct (higher) clocks. gpucurrentperflevel does change, so this is what I'm using at the moment, although I would prefer actual clock readings rather than 0-3.
Is this experienced by anyone else with nvidia (fermi or not) cards? And should I file a bug for arch, or upstream?
    Thanks

    Thanks Both...
Psychomania, I do remember one of the Nokia updates having a problem when I initially started to play with the phone.  I've just gone through all the QR codes above and got the attached message for 'Display and Touch'.
This was exactly the problem I had initially and looks like the cause or the error in my settings.
FYI.  I am updating over my home wi-fi, so there shouldn't be any connection issues.
