Using OEM for Database Detection

Hi. I'd like to monitor my database using OEM without any 3rd party S/W. Has anyone done this? If so, can you share some of the techniques how exactly to do it.
Thanks.

Hi
You can use OEM(Oracle Enterprise Manager) for monitor your database
Thanks and regards

  • Anyone using OEM for scheduling backups?

    I'd like to see a poll for the number of users using OEM for taking database backups. Had some interesting conversations with some colleagues via social media and it seems like some DBAs don't trust OEM for their backups even though the feature works IMO.
    Are you using OEM to do backups?
    Edited by: DBA on May 3, 2012 1:02 PM

    I have 91 scheduled recurring backup jobs running through OEM 12c BP1. They work quite well. I've only noticed a few problems and nitpicks:
    1) Occasionally, for unknown reasons, a backup job against a newly-added database target will fail stating that the backup cannot be run since the database is closed. The database is not closed, it's up and running fine. Changing the backup job to run using SYS as SYSDBA credentials resolves this problem.
    2) Identification of failed backups is not as customizable as I would like. For example, if I have a full "backup database plus archivelog" running, and during the course of that backup an archivelog backup runs and deletes archived logs, OEM will report that the backup job has failed since RMAN throws an error about not being able to backup an archivelog it expected to find. I dealt with this by adding SKIP INACCESSIBLE to the backup statement. I'm not totally comfortable about that but I monitor for offline datafiles so I consider this only a minimal risk. Our custom backup scripts used to catch this warning and ignore it.
    3) It's really annoying that, after creating a backup job through the target Availability -> Schedule Backup tool, I cannot then run a 'Create Like' against that backup job to create a nearly identical one against a different database target. You have to schedule each of them from the Schedule Backup tool. Clicky clicky clicky clicky.
    4) A backup job created through the 'Schedule Backup' tool has a job type of 'Database Backup', therefore when the job fails a high-availability incident is created, so you can configure incident rules to receive notification of this event. This is good. Unfortunately a backup job created from the Jobs page has a job type of 'RMAN Script' does NOT create an incident on job failure out of the box. I've had difficulty configuring incident rules to catch failures for RMAN Script job types. This is not good.
    5) The repeating schedule options for jobs are limited compared even to something like cron. I can schedule a job for a day of the week, or a day of the month, but cannot easily schedule a job for "the first Tuesday of each month". This can be worked around.
    6) After creating and submitting a backup job through the Schedule Backup tool, you cannot edit the RMAN script without recreating the job. You can only edit the RMAN script before submitting the job. I deal with this by having my backups run stored scripts in the recovery catalog, and make the changes there if I need to change something.
    7) It is very annoying that if I 'stop' a repeating job (instead of suspend), there is no way to resume that job. It has to be recreated. This is my own user error -- I just don't click the stop button. Not OEM's fault but I'd rather not even have that button.
    8) No ability to sequence jobs. You can sequence steps within a job, but then the entire job succeeds or fails as a unit. If you want to back up database A then immediately back up database B afterwards, you have to create a multi-task job. The multi-task job has the same problem as item #4 above such that it does not create a "backup failed" incident when the backup fails.
    Even with all of these gripes, I am quite pleased with the backups I have running through OEM.

    Really the problem initially was because of this:
    [INS-06006] Passwordless SSH connectivity not set up between the following node(s): [node1, node2]. CVU may reports "PRVF-4007 : User equivalence check failed for user "user"" for same error
    and I had to install node1 first and after node2 manually and perhaps for this the product was not well linked.
    I resolved the problem establishing the keys with the wizard and after copying the following files from node1 to node2
    /home/grid/.ssh -------> /home/grid/.ssh
    authorized_keys
    known_hosts
    This is the procedure if you run the wizard at the node1.
    The problem is that the wizard creates the keys incompletely...

  • Using OEM for file management

    Is anyone using OEM to manage files on their clients?
    We currently have a bunch of scripts that distribute certain files to certain systems based on system criteria, such as OS version, system "usage" (ie oracle DB, backup server) etc.
    I was looking @ OEM Deployment Procedures as something that might help with this. I didn't see a premade "file distribution" procedure, though, so I would probably have to write my own somehow.
    I'm also open to using Ops Center or some other plugin that might be more suited to this task.

    I am going to assume that you are using EM 12c. Let me know if this is not true.
    Deployment procedures (DP) is the ideal solution for this. There is no out of box DP for file transfer because it is extremely easy to create one. You have two options:
    1. transfer files from one server to another (using the file transfer step in DP)
    2. upload files to EM software library and then transfer them to different hosts (using the component and directive step in DP)

  • Use Javascript for Browser Detection

    Does anyone know how I can detect which browser my viewers are using load pages that are built specifically for that browser.
    Example:  I am having a lot of issues with IE6+ and think it would be easier to just specify that if the viewer is using one of these browsers that it loads a page constructed specifically IE and if not it loads another version of the page.
    Hope this is clear with what I am wanting to do.
    Thanks

    You can target any version of IE down to IE5 (I believe) with the correct IF statement.
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms537512(VS.85).aspx
    However, in today's browser market, I wouldn't worry about anything lower than IE7 (unless you have specific reasons to target IE6 which is rapidly on its way to browser heaven).

  • Oracle 10g Enterprise Manager Control for Database

    Hi,
    I have a question. I have installed Oracle 10g Application server and Database server. Now, I am able to start OEM for database using "emctl start dbconsole". And I am able to browse it on port 5500. But everytime it shows me database "orcl". I have two databases. So, what to do if I want to manage another database using OEM for databse control. I have checked ports.ini file and it shows me that OEM port for another database is 5501. But when I try to browse it, I am getting nothing. So, please guide me.
    Thanks,
    Sanket.

    Sanket,
    If you go to $ORACLE_HOME/install, you will see the file portlist.ini. If you open this file, you will see one or more entries in the format
    Enterprise Manager Console HTTP Port <SID_NAME> = <PORT_NUMBER>
    In my case, my SID, TEST is running on the port 5501, and therefore the following entry appears in ports.ini :
    Enterprise Manager Console HTTP Port (TEST) = 5501
    In order for this entry to be added automatically, I think you have to use the database configuration assistant (dbca) to create the database.
    When I open the following location, http://127.0.0.1:5501/em/, in my browser I can see the enterprise management console for the SID. Similarly, the URL http://127.0.0.1:5500/em/ is the management console for another SID that is running on the same machine.
    If you are using Linux, make sure that that 127.0.0.1, or the hostname (in the url) in the portlist.ini file is in the /etc/hosts* file.
    Good Luck!
    Regards,
    Rudi

  • Using OEM to backup/restore DB using EMC Avamar (3rd party)

    Hi,
    I'm trying to find a solution for using OEM to backup and restore DB using EMC Avamar software.
    Normally, we can backup/restore DB using Avamar through RMAN CLI using scripts similar to the following:
    connect target /
    run {
    configure controlfile autobackup on;
    set controlfile autobackup format for device type sbt to 'CONTROLFILE.orcl.%F';
    allocate channel c0 type sbt PARMS="SBT_LIBRARY=c:\PROGRA~1\avs\bin\orasbt64.dll" format '%d_%U';
    send '"--prefix=11g/orcl/" "--flagfile=c:\flagfile\avtar-flags.txt" "--bindir=c:\PROGRA~1\avs\bin"';
    backup database plus archivelog delete input;
    release channel c0;
    Where orasbt64.dll is the name of Avamar's 64bit library and flagfile contains some internal flags necessary for backup/restore operations.
    Now, I want to use OEM for the same thing so, what I did was try to specify the Media Management Vendor Library Parameters under Backup Settings in OEM. I saved the following as the parameters:
    "SBT_LIBRARY=c:\PROGRA~1\avs\bin\orasbt64.dll";
    Even after this, the backup script generated by OEM does not contain this parameter. Naturally, backups to EMC Avamar fail.
    I would like answers to these 2 questions:
    1. How to correctly specify the Media Management Vendor Library Parameters?
    2. Is there a way to specify all the parameters (--prefix, flagfile, bindir, PARMS etc.) so that the script generated by OEM is same (or as close as possible) to the one I use for RMAN CLI backups.
    Thanks!

    Hi Anant,
    I'm also having the same issue. It fails because it doesn't understand the "send" command in OEM. Here is the output of the tape backup test:
    RMAN> run {
    2> allocate channel oem_sbt_backup type 'sbt_tape' format '%U' parms 'SBT_LIBRARY=/usr/local/avamar/lib/libobk_avamar64.so,
    3> ENV=(PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/avamar/bin);
    4> send "--flagfile=/home/oracle/scripts/backup/my-avtar-flags.txt"';
    5> backup as COMPRESSED BACKUPSET current controlfile tag '04302012033156';
    6> restore controlfile validate from tag '04302012033156';
    7> release channel oem_sbt_backup;
    8> }

    When I use TSM it doesn't require the "send" command and it backs up successfully. I guess the other option would be to create an EM job to do the backups. However, this wouldn't populate the EM tables for backup reporting.

  • How to configure email Alerts in OEM Cloud 12c for Database Servers up/down

    Hi everybody,
    How to configure email Alerts in OEM Cloud 12c for Database Servers up/down status?
    Regards,
    Miguel Vega

    Hi Miguel Vega,
    Information regarding the notifications:
    ==============================
    Configuring notification rules in 12c is different from earlier releases.
    The concept and function of notification rules has been replaced with a two-tier system consisting of Incident Rules and Incident Rule Sets :
    1. Incident Rules: Operate at the lowest level granularity (on discrete events) and performs the same role as notification rules from earlier releases.
    By using incident rules, you can automate the response to incoming incidents and their updates.
    A rule contains a set of automated actions to be taken on specific events, incidents or problems.
    The actions taken are for example : sending e-mails, creating incidents, updating incidents, and creating tickets.
    2. Incident Rule Set: A rule set is a collection of rules that applies to a common set of objects, for example, targets, jobs, and templates.

    Hello,
    currently we have 130 databases, say, if I want to pick out any database currently NOT in archivelog mode, is there a quick way to find out ?
    by using OEM grid control
    or
    some trick similar,
    but really don't need to check each database manually.
    thank you very much!

    This query works in 12c - please run as SYSMAN.
    It is based on undocumented assumptions though +( AND key_value = 'NOARCHIVELOG')+.
      SELECT *
      FROM SYSMAN.MGMT$GROUP_DERIVED_MEMBERSHIPS O ,
        SYSMAN.MGMT$TARGET T ,
        sysman.MGMT$AVAILABILITY_CURRENT st

      o.member_target_type     IN ('oracle_database', 'rac_database')
      AND ( t.target_type           ='rac_database'
      OR (t.target_type             ='oracle_database'
      AND t.type_qualifier3        != 'RACINST'))
      AND o. member_target_guid     = t.target_guid
      AND t.target_guid             = st.target_guid
      AND st.availability_status    = 'Target Up'
      AND ( EXISTS
        (SELECT *
        FROM sysman.mgmt$metric_current i
        WHERE I.TARGET_GUID = O.MEMBER_TARGET_GUID
        AND metric_name     = 'archFull'
        AND Metric_Column   = 'archTotal'

        AND column_label    = 'Total Archive Area (KB)'
        AND key_value       = 'NOARCHIVELOG'
        ));Another way to achieve the goal is to push extended metrics (SELECT LOG_MODE FROM V$DATABASE) on each DB, and monitor the values they return to the repository. • OEM for physical standby database

    Hello All,
    I am using Oracle 11.2.0.3. My enterprise manager is db console 11.2
    I have Oracle Enterprise manager dbcnsole for my RAC primary database  and I have created through sqlplus command line a physical standby database.
    My questions
    Can I use the RAC primary dbconsole to monitor my physical standby database? if yes what the steps?
    Is it mandatory to use grid control in that case? if yes, what steps are needed to implement grid control ?
    Regards,

    Hi,
    It is not possible to monitor/administer a Logical or Physical Standby database, i.e Data Guard, using Enterprise Manager Database Control.  This is primarily due to the fact that Database Control is designed to monitor 1 database and a Data Guard environment, by definition, includes more than 1 database.
    If you attempt to run emca against a standby Database, you will get an error like (i.e. ORA-01219: database not open).
    Database Control, can, of course, be used to monitor the current Primary database (with no ability to administer or monitor Data Guard related functionality).  In such a case, when failover occurs Database Control must be reconfigured to run on the new Primary database using the commands detailed in Note 278100.1 How To Drop, Create And Recreate DB Control In A 10g Database, section C. Recreate/ReConfig DB Control, Option 2. Recreate the DB Control Configuration Files and Repository.
    Enterprise Manager Grid Control or Cloud Control provides the functionality for viewing, monitoring, and administering primary and standby databases in a Data Guard configuration.

  • Using OEM to monitor Data Guard database

    Can someone please send me the link or docs of how to use OEM monitoring data guard? In specific, I would like to use OEM to monitor and be sure logs are applying to stand by site.
    Any ideas?

    Hello ,
    I will extend the document on the Fast Failover feature one of these days.
    What you need to do is:
    For using Fast Failover, you need to configure the Data Guard observer process.
    The configuration of this process can be done by selecting the Fast-Start Failover Disabled link on the Data Guard page of the database (Primary or Standby).
    You will be automatically redirected to the Fast-Start Failover: Configure Page.
    From this page you can do the configuration of the DG observer process, that then will enable you to activate the Fast Failover feature.
