Using p_trace=YES

One of my pages was very slow to render and I suspected a query region on the page. So, after the page loaded, I went to the Location bar in the browser, added &p_trace=YES to the URL and hit Enter.
I ran tkprof on the resulting trace file and it showed a total time for all statements as only 3 seconds. But the page took nearly 15 seconds to load.
Why would this be? Where is the rest of the time being spent?
Thanks

  • &p_trace=YES won't stop

    In the process of debugging a page error in our application we decided to grab a trace file using &p_trace=YES.
    Does this trace stay active for the entire session? Or for the period of time in which the page is rendering?
    The reason I ask is that the file is still growing in size... about 4 meg a second. We've tried using &p_trace=NO to turn it off. How can we stop this file from eating up any more filespace?
    The page seems to have finished rendering, I don't believe there's a loop since the loading bar completed in the browser. I'm stumped.
    Thanks.

    Hi Scott,
    when I look into the tkprof output I see that APEX issues a
    alter session set sql_trace=false
    but it seems that it has no effect, because after that command I see still commands which are logged, I think they are from mod_plsql
    eg.
    declare
    rc__ number;
    simple_list__ owa_util.vc_arr;
    complex_list__ owa_util.vc_arr;
    begin
    owa.init_cgi_env(:n__,:nm__,:v__);
    htp.HTBUF_LEN := 63;But I think the root problem is the
    ALTER SESSION SET EVENTS '10046 TRACE NAME CONTEXT FOREVER, LEVEL 12'because a
    alter session set sql_trace=false;doesn't disable the trace!!! I have tested that in SQL*Plus and all commands that are after the alter session are also in the trace file.
    That also explains why the trace file grows and grows, because as soon as the session is reused (independent if p_trace is set to YES) it will trace everything.
    Can you check that please

    Hi,
    I did found this post
    Re: Tracing APEX SQL

    If your APEX installation uses the Embedded pl/sql gateway, the trace files will be in the 'bdump' directory. The file names will have the string pattern 's00' within them.

  • OpenCL - used (if yes, where) or not?!

    Hi,
    as you know FCX needs OpenCL GPU to run.
    But i looked "into" Compressor + FinalCutX, by looking what Frameworks they use (load) and also let an OpenGL/OpenCL debugger look after OpenCL.
    Also checked GPU load when doing FCP tasks - gpu was NOT more in load as with FCP!!
    It seems that OpenCl isnt used - at least not in Compressor.
    Would be helpful if some advanced FCX user may tell, in which funktions OpenCL (GPU computes) runs.
    I can tell that FCX uses Coreimage (as FCP) and CoreVideo.
    Maybe Apple disabled OpenCL usage because OpenCL (at least for ATI GPUs, AMd is working hard to get OpenCL drivers same stage as Nvidia) is buggy , and will aktivate that later with 10.6.8 or Lion ?

    Lion brings the full OpenGL 3 specs to the table, this is the only thing that is known. Therfore newer gpu drivers have to bei in Lion.
    In 10.6.6 and 10.6.7 the ATI kexts were renewed to support the newest Radeon HDxxx series. So in 10.6.8 it is to expected to bring again some newer drivers and maybe an OpenGL framework to support the Kexts features.
    But the real "revolution" is Lion for the GPU underpinnings softwareside ( and possibly also OpenCL as that goes hand in hand now even on non-Mac Platforms, for instance the latest ATI drivers for Windows activate also OpenCL). Lion is also said to include a revised Audio/Video Platform for QT X tasks. As Final Cut X outputs via QT X  would naturally think of better perfomance, yes.
    However all this does not fix the isssue that FC X is only suitable for Hobbyists. It is a nice product. But not more.

  • After downloading latest update to my iphone3, I found a 'game center' app.  When I opened and tried to sign in using my current info it keeps rejecting my password as already being used. Yes, by ME. How do I get past this?

    THANK YOU, LIMNOS, I FIXED IT!!!!!!!! [And yes, I was being REALLY dumb.]
    Just in case the following is helpful to anyone else:
    The switch has to be done manually since all of the sort categories--except album artist--have changed to automatically sort with articles, which is a bit of a pain if you have a lot of articled artists, but there is actually a way to WRITE IN how you want your artist (or whatever) to sort. I just changed my POLICE to COPPERS as a test, and by golly now all the music comes up/is reorganized under C right below Coolio, still listed as The Police!
    Before the newest update, the auto-sort always sorted ARTIST to my liking (i.e. ignoring the article), so I never bothered to check out any other tab save Details and Artwork, but voila:
    [For any other dummies out there, here's how to get to this screen: right click song or songs-->Get Info-->Sorting.]
    Dankeschön, Limnos, really appreciate it!!! But hey, I guess it could be worse when you only have use of half your brain...

  • I'n not able to boot Osx 10.6 from Firewire Hd if I use USB yes ... Why?

    Hi ,
    I've problem with the internal hd of my Imac. The option is to change de HD or to use an external HD to boot from.
    At the Apple store they showed me the possibility to use a firewire HD to install and run the system on my mac . I already had a firewire HD , a WD my passport studio, but I'install easoly the operative system on the HD connected by a firewire but when I need to reboot the system doen't recognize any operative system. If I reboot using the USB is OK but not with the firewire ... so I can install OSX on a firewire but I'm not able to boot using the same connection , I have to switch to USB... Somebody can help me? I read something about some problems that Snow Leopard have with firewire ... maybe using lion can be better?
    Thanks and sorry for my grammar mistakes
    Valerio

    It is free. It is beta. It works well - I use it on mine and two PCs as well...
    MS Security Essentials will no longer install due to compatibiliity issues - that is the idea of a beta - and the RC could be out in June.
    Windows 7 doesn't work great on any Mac, or Apple drivers, fan cvontrol to manage heat, and other issues.
    Put 8 in and get to know it, then when the RC comes out you'll be ready

    Use webutil_file_transfer.Client_To_DB_with_progress.
    There is no method AS to DB, but you can build it by yourself looking into the code done in client_to_as and client_to_db

  • SLOW report performance with bind variable

    Environment: 11.1.0.7.2, Apex 4.01.
    I've got a simplified report page where the report runs slowly compared to running the same query in sqldeveloper. The report region is based on a pl/sql function returning a query. If I use a bind variable in the query inside apex it takes 13 seconds to run, and if I hard code a string it takes only a few hundredths of a second. The query returns one row from a table which has 1.6 million rows. Statistics are up-to-date and the columns in the joins and where clause are indexed.
    I've run traces using p_trace=YES from Apex for both the bind variable and hard coded strings. They are below.
    The sqldeveloper explain plan is identical to the bind variable plan from the trace, yet the query runs in 0.0x seconds in sqldeveloper.
    What is it about bind variable syntax in Apex that is causing the bad execution plan? Apex Bug? 11g bug? Ideas?

    Patrick, interesting insight. Thank you.
    The optimizer must be peeking at my bind variables with it's eyes closed. I'm the only one testing and I've never passed %anything as a bind value. :)
    Here's what I've learned since my last post:
    I don't think that sqldeveloper is actually using the explain plan it says it is. When I run explain plan in sqldeveloper (with a bind variable) it shows me the exact same plan as Apex with a bind variable. However, when I run autotrace in sqldeveloper, it takes a path that matches the hard coded values, and returns results in half a second. That autotrace run is consistent with actually running the query outside of autotrace. So, I think either sqldeveloper isn't really using bind variables, OR it is using them in some other way that Apex does not, or maybe optimizer peeking works in sqldeveloper?
    Using optimizer hints to tweak the plan helps. I've tried both /*+ FIRST_ROWS */ and /*+ index(ps pk_persons) */ and both drop the query to about a second. However, I'm loath to use hints because of the very dynamic nature of the query (and Tom Kyte doesn't like them either). The hints may end up hurting other variations on the query.
    I also tested the query by wrapping it in a select count(1) from ([long query]) and testing the performance in sqldeveloper and in Apex. The performance in that case is identical with both bind variables and hard coded variables for both Apex and SqlDeveloper. That to me was very interesting and I went so far as to set up two bind variable report regions on the same page. One region wrapped the long query with select count(1) from (...) and the other didn't. The wrapped query ran in 0.01 seconds, the unwrapped took 15ish seconds with no other optimizations. Very strange.
    To get performance up to acceptable levels I have changed my function returning query to:
    1) Set the equality operator to "=" for values without wildcards and "like" for user input with wildcards. This makes a HUGE difference IF no wildcard is used.
    2) Insert a /*+ FIRST_ROWS */ hint when users chose the column that requires the sub-query. This obviously changes the optimizer's plan and improves query speed from 15 seconds to 1.5 seconds even with wildcards.
    I will NOT be hard coding any user supplied values in the query string. As you can probably tell by the query, this is an application where sql injection would be very bad.
    Jeff, regarding your question about "like '%' || :P71_SEARCH_SOURCE1 || '%'". I've found that putting wildcards around values, particularly at the beginning will negate any indexing on the column in question and slows performance even more.
    I'm still left wondering if there isn't something in Apex that is breaking the optimizer "peeking" that Patrick describes. Perhaps something in the way it switches contexts from apex_public_user to the workspace schema?

    My page is very simple, it contains one region, one item, one

    Would you please advise what next step should be?
    Thanks in advance,

    SQL> desc demo;
    Name Null? Type
    ID NOT NULL NUMBER(38)
    THECLOB CLOB
    The query just took the CLOB content and divided it into table of varchar2(4000) base on chr(10). The query worked well in PL/SQL when I replaced htp with dbms_output.
    The branching was the default one, "Redirect To Page 11 (the same page)". I only created one region, one item and one button. That branching was automatically created.
    Below was the output when I turned on the debug mode.

  • No trace file produced

    I am try to trace a page in my application using &p_trace=YES. I have added to the url and run the page. I have checked the location that trace files are saved to using show parameter USER_DUMP_DEST. I have navigated to the directory but no trace files has been produced. • WITH HOLD problem when  common_parser=yes compiler option used

    Hi guys,
    we are using Oracle 11g precompiler and we start using "common_parser=yes" option because of JOIN keyword, but now WITH HOLD in DECLARE CURSOR statements is not supported.
    So, the statement :
    EXEC SQL DECLARE cur_name CURSOR WITH HOLD FOR SELECTc1, c2 FROM t1
    gives an error when "common_parser=yes" is present
    PCC-S-02201, Fand das Symbol "WITH" als eines der folgenden erwartet wurde:
    for,
    and when is not, we can compile this statement but we get the same error for JOIN (and we dont wont to rewrite JOIN statemnts to old syntax with +).
    Is this a bug and is there a workaround or solution for this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    DO
    PS
    We also noticed the same problem for LOB statements:
    EXEC SQL LOB WRITE ONE :lob FROM :buffer WITH LENGTH :bufferlen ...
    Again, WITH is not recognised

    Hi,
    I don't have much information I can provide but this looks like an unpublished bug: Bug 8436316 - PARSER UNIFICATION: CURSOR WITH HOLD IS NOT SUPPORTED
    The best I can say at this time is if you have a support contract to open a Service Request with My Oracle Support for any alternatives.
    I know that is not much help but it does seem like this is a known bug (but no workaround that I have seen).
    Regards,
    Mark

  • Opening PDF files using preview on some PDF file result in the content not displaying properly. The file I tried to look at has pictures and text. The pictures are displayed ok but the text is shown as pixalated boxes. The same file opens ok via a PC.

    Solutions please. Accessing PDF files online using preview normally works ok. However there are a clutch of files on the mothers union web site that although can be opened, present text as pixalated boxes. The pictures contained in the documents are however displayed OK. I experience the same problem on my Imac and my wifes laptop that runs Lion. The same site has other PDF files that can be opend OK. If I access the same problem files using a PC laptop running microsoft windows, they are opened OK with the text displayed as it should be. This is driving me mad....

    Yes. Word 2007. (You can see it in Preview if you do ⌘I or choose Tools > Show Inspector.) And it's the transparency issue. The three pics attached show the Jan 2012 newsletter (a) in Preview, (b) in Acrobat Pro, (c) again in Preview, after I saved it in Acrobat, flattening the transparency.
    For you, the solution is to use Adobe Reader -- with due note taken of
    <http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb12-01.html>
    For them, I don't know. Presumably, they wish max compatibility for their newsletter, but I really don't know how Office 2007 generates PDF. Maybe they should check transparency settings and flatten before generating PDF? Or perhaps save as PDF v1.4 instead of PDF v1.5? I would use Distiller, but perhaps they can't afford it.
