Using Photoshop with Iphoto

I've set the editing preference to use photoshop as the editor and when I click on a photo and then the edit icon, it launches photoshop but doesn't open the picture in photoshop. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
David

Also, after you get the problem solved, this may be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Using Elements with iPhoto

    Dear Friends,
What is the best way to help a Mac user who has downloaded images into iPhoto but wants to adjust them in Elements (or CS5)?
He has asked if he can move an event over to work in Photoshop, or can he only open one image at a time?
Is there  way to set iPhoto so that images automatically open in Photoshop?
    Thanks for your advice.

  • Using picasa with iphoto?

I was considering downloading Picasa as an easy way to share photos with family. If I do so, will I be forced to chose between using one or the other for editing/viewing. Do they work well together?

Yes you can upload to Picasa Web Albums directly from your Mac without using the Picasa app. Search on Google for a plug-in or use any of the usual methods of accessing your Library.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
I would not recommend using Picasa and iPhoto together. Picasa can access the iPhoto Library but uses an unsupported hack to do this. A change to the iPhoto Library or even a system update could easily break that link.

    TD

  • Using Picassa with iPhoto

I'm able to export my photos to Picasa using iPhoto but unfortunately, the comments from iPhoto don't show up in Picasa. It says in the Picasa webpage that those comments would be imported too.
What am I doing wrong? Is there a setting button that I should be clicking?
    I'm using iPhoto 4.0.3.
    Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What is the workflow you're using in iPhoto to print and the printer settings? What happens when you export to the desktop (cropped to the size you want), open in Preview and print from there? If it's still grainy it may be a printer problem. By saving to preview do you mean saving as a PDF file and printing that? That would be pretty much the same. Still try opening the jpg with Preview and printing from there.
Apple just released new HP drivers two days ago. You might try installing them and try again. HP Printer Driver 1.1.1.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Can I use photoshop with out installing other apps for cs6?

can I use photoshop without installing other apps?

    You absolutely can
Usually, Adobe Bridge is automatically installed as a companion app for Photoshop - for example, if you download Photoshop CS6 through Creative Cloud, Bridge will also be installed. But Photoshop can definitely be used as a "stand-alone" application.

  • Using Photoshop With Aperture-Flattens Layers

I am running into some slight issues when using Aperture 3 and Photoshop CS6.
I have used Aperture 3 for quite some time. As part of my workflow, I use Nik Software plug-ins for quite some time. In order to fully understand the issue, it would be best to understand a bit about my workflow.
After I go out and shoot the images, I download the images onto my internal drive so that the images are managed within the library.
I then proceed to rate the images. When the library is imported all the photos get one star.
I then go in and star photos that deserve a two star rating.
With these photos I take all the two stared photos and use the NIk Define plug-in to decrease the noise of the images. After this process this outputs TIFF files that are placed into my library.
I then make all these new TIFF files that have the noise lessened to three stars.
Previous to my new workflow, I would go from here utilizing the NIk plug-ins and then further rating the images.
    New Workflow:
From here I enabled Adobe Photoshop CS6 is an external editor.
I would export the images I would want to work on in Photomatix Pro to my desktop. After using Photomatix, I would open up the file in Photoshop without importing into Aperture.
After all my work is done in Photoshop, I would reimport the photo back into Aperture 3.
While the file was in Aperture 3, I would reopen it in Photoshop.
The file would show as my layers being applied but not shown. I think it was a flattened image file.
What I would like to do:
Be able to reopen with Photoshop photos in my Aperture library but continue preserving the layers from Photoshop.
Would I need to save the files as PSD files in order for this to work? Any thoughts?
Anyhow for device would be appreciated.

    leonieDF wrote:
Aperture does not handle layers, as far as I know. If you import an image with layers, as tiff or as psd, the layers will be preserved, but not displayed with transparency, since Aperture does only handle RGB. If you export the original (master), your layers will be preserved, but if you adjust the image in Aperture and export the edited version, then the resulting file will no longer have layers, all will be flattened.
If you Aperture only use as a database and not as editor, your approach should work, but if you want to use Aperture's editing tools and export versions, then the layers will be gone.
Sorry to revive this old thread, but I have a follow up question on exact subject...
I have run into the same issue and understand your explanation. I have confirmed that I can import a layered master to Aperture, its layers are preserved and if I export it later the layers are still there.
What I am really surprised about is that if I edit in Photoshop from Aperture, the file opens up in Photoshop, but the layers are not there. Is this right or avoidable?
    Thanks

  • How to use Aperture with iPhoto without needing double the disk space?

I've just purchased Aperture. I already use Iphoto and have several gigs of imagery in an iphoto library file.
I want to direct Aperture to import all from my iphoto file.
But....I only don't want Ap to simply create a duplicate of this file and use up several more gigs of space.
Is there any way I can get Ap to just create thumbnails rather than complete copies?
I should say that I will onlybe using Ap from now on, so what happens to the iphoto is of little consequence.

    Hi,
You can use the referenced master in Aperture to get this done. When you import pictures from iPhoto, you can "dig" into the iPhoto library with Aperture and choose which photo you want to import where. In the import dialog, you can choose from "import to Aperture library" or "leave the file where they are". This will do the trick.
Personally I imported the files into my Aperture library, this created duplicates. But while importing them, I reclassified into Aperture to better fit my workflow based on Aperture capability. Then I archive my iPhoto library (just in case) and deleted it from my main disk. This freed up the space, but gave me a much better managed Aperture library. With a managed library in Aperture, you can have the vault feature as an extra measure for backups.
Considering you want to move on to Aperture, I would consider using the Aperture managed library that I describe in my second part of this message.

  • Using Automator with iPhoto or Preview

I'm brand new to iMac. I love it, just having some learning curves.
I have over 14,000 photos needing my watermark. How do I use automator to do this quickly instead of one photo at a time with preview?

I didn't see a watermark option for graphics files in Automator.
However, I think every photo processing app will batch convert all of your files and some of them have a watermark option.
From a google search, Aperture provides a watermark option and batch processing.
In Photoshop Elements, you can "Process Multiple Files…" which allows you to add a text watermark.
I don't know if GraphicConverter can add a watermark.

  • Using Automator with iPhoto

I am new to using Automator. I have over 400 pictures in iPhoto and I would like to be able to organize the pictures. Unfortunately, there are many duplications of the same pictures in iPhoto. Can Automator help me identify the duplications and delete those photos without too much difficulty.
Also, if I have edited a photo in iPhoto, will Automator keep the original as well as the newly edited version?
What steps do I need to take to automate the deletion of duplicate photos?
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi John,
I must warn you to first backup your iPhoto Library folder before you try anything. using Automator to do things in your iPhoto Library folder is asking for disaster.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
iPhoto diet is a good program and it would be best to read all the info he has on his site as to what it can do. Do not use automator or manually delete Originals from your iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
How did you come to have the duplications in the library?
If I were you I would start keyword your images, then when done, do a keyword search so you can find all the same images and it will be easier to find the dups. Then delete them from within iPhoto.

  • Can I use Thunderbird with iPhoto yet?

OK....it's now July 2012 and the last post I saw on this subject was over a year ago. I have just bitten the bullet and bought the new macbook pro with the retina screen. Please tell me that iPhoto can now automatically resize photos and email them with Thunderbird like I've been doing for 10 years with every image viewer I've ever used on a PC.
    Please??

Ok... has a scripting ability been added to Thunderbird? (And if not, will one be added, now that is has been discontinued by it's developers?) Because that's the problem - Thunderbird is missing capability, not iPhoto.

I have the iPhone 3GS with fully updated software and iPhoto '09. What i want is to be able to automatically import photos from my iphone to iphoto, organize them into events and delete them from my iphone when they sync, all automatically. Can this be done?

    Not that I am aware.
You can have iphoto open when you connect a digital camera/iphone. Then you can choose to import all, then you can choose to delete the originals.
