Using POP access with Gmail

I just got a 3GS and I am trying to configure my Gmail with the Mail app in the manner that's best for me and I'm hitting a bit of a snag.
I know that the iPhone will "archive" emails in Gmail when using the Mail app and moves them into the All Mail folder but I find that a bit inconvenient.
I would like for the Mail app to work in a manner that pulls email from my Gmail account but leaves the original messages in the Webmail account as my wife and I share an email address. So I don't want to delete an email on my iPhone and have it deleted in Gmail.
It appears that if I enable POP in Gmail it will keep a copy of the downloaded messages in the Gmail account but what will occur if I delete a message on the iPhone?
Does anyone use iPhone/Gmail in this manner???

Have you tried deleting a message from the phone to see what happens?
My similar issue is that after the iphone checks gmail POP, mail.app doesn't retrieve the emails. The emails are still marked unread at www.gmail.com.
I also want to be able to access my emails from different devices. I look forward to hearing solutions.

Hi:
I am using Mail with multiple POP accounts, including a gmail personal account ([email protected]) and a google-based work account ([email protected]).
When I send mail to people from my work account, they see an email that appears to come from my gmail/personal address. When I send mail from my personal account, they also see an email that appears to come from my gmail/personal address.
I think I have Mail set up properly, in that my work account has the proper [email protected] address, etc. This used to work fine until recently...has something changed?

In Mail Preferences > Composing > you have a 'send new mail from' drop down option.
I have the option of sending from the 'last viewed mailbox' or my personal one, you may have more options.

Using POP Mail With Two Macs?

Is it possible to use two Macs with Apple Mail? I use Mail on my iMac, and I would like to set it up on my PowerBook as well. The only problem is accessing the same mail on both computers. It seems like if I were to open a message, it would store it on the respective computer that I open it with, and I would not be able to access it with the other. Is it possible to set it up where I can see the same messages on both? I use GMail. Thanks.

Like Kappy said, it's a hassle if you are using pop mail. But no problem with imap because the "master" copy is always maintained on the imap server, and your two computers are, essentially, nothing more than mirror sites.
I don't know if GMail is pop or imap.
What you would have to do for a pop account is set up account prefs to leave message on server after downloading on at least one of the computers, if not both of them. If you do that with both, I expect you will be hearing from your pop provider real soon about excessive disk space use. If you only do it to one computer, make sure that it is the one you will always be downloading mail from first. Plus, I can't remember whether that would cause multiple copies to download or not, on subsequent mail checks, when mail is left on server; it has been so long since I have had to play that game with pop servers.
Again, imap is no problem, because imap was designed to address this very problem.

HT4864 Is there any way to use POP mail with iCloud?

Hi newbie here, so be kind! Just trying to set up iCloud on my new iPad, my iPhone 3G and my oldish Windows PC running Vista. I have managed to get the iPad and iPhone running relatively well, but the real reason I wanted to synch all my devices was because I am buried beneath all the emails that I receive each day and cleaning them off three devices was a real hassle (1st world prob I know). My PC is running Windows mail because I couldn't get Yahoo mail to run on POP or IMAP settings. So I have been happily downloading Yahoo mail (via) POP into Windows mail for a few years now. However I have hit an Apple Support doc saying that I cannot use POP settings in iCloud (if you know what I mean), I have to use IMAP. Can anyone help me with what settings I need to put in Windows Mail to make it sync with the mail client on my phone and iPad?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Gmail and all POP systems are not iCloud mail. iCloud mail ends with @mac, @me or @icloud.com, Gmail and POP systems are not handled by iCloud mail systems.

Why Does Safari Use Excessive Memory with Gmail?

I am running Safari 7.0.1 along with Maverics (10.9.1) on a 2011 MacBook Air with 4 GB of memory. Just recently I have begun to notice excessive memory usage when using Gmail. I have iStat Menus as well as something called MemoryKeeper so I can monitor memory use in real time.
The table below shows numbers taken from Activity Monitor with each of the sites running in a single tab. The Safari Web Content is through the roof with Gmail compared to My Yahoo or indeed with any other single site. In Gmail it starts out above 500 MB and slowly comes down to the lower end indicated if I do nothing. If I open tabs with both My Yahoo and Gmail, I sink below 100 MB and if I have three tabs open I'm heading to zero. As far as I can tell, the excessive memory useage only occurs with Gmail.

Typically I will close Safari and start it again if I get much below 100 MB. I usually have to close Safari at the end of the day to refresh it for the next day. This has only become a problem within the last month or so, and I am at a loss to explain it. I thought it might be Mavericks related (though I have been running Mavericks since its release), but then the Safari I have on my 5 year old Mac Mini running Snow Leopard gives me similar results.
When I run Google Chrome I don't have any of these problems. Indeed, though it is not my preference, I am having to use it more and more for day to day activities or I have to stick with one tab if I am going back and forth between Gmail and other sites. I have not seen this problem reported elsewhere, so I have to believe there is something going on in my system. I have cleared the cache one time on both systems, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.

I would not have even tried this app had I not heard about it on the Mac Rountable podcast (episode #222), where it received favorable comments from otherwise knowledgeable people. It also has a 4.5 star rating on the Mac App Store with 706 5-Star ratings out of 1,049. If you add up the 5-Star and 4-Star ratings you get close to 1,000 favorable rates right there. I have to wonder if people really know what's going on. Since the most obvious detrimental effects for me were centered around using Safari with Gmail on Mavericks, others must not be using that lethal combination. As I mentioned, using Google Chrome does not seem to have any obvious deliterious effects.
Well, there's going to be one more 1-Star rating reflecting my experience.

Cannot send email in mail app. using POP account with Wi-Fi

I recently moved to an apartment that only has wireless internet access. Since moving I cannot send email using my POP account, although I can receive email. I was also not able to receive email using my .mac account, but I learned through this forum to change server port to 587 in .mac account and now I can send via .mac account in mail app. But I still cannot sent email with mail app. using my POP account. I changed no settings when I moved, and have never had this problem with cable. Any suggestions?

It all depends on the policy of whoever is the ISP at your new location and the method used by the outgoing (SMTP) server to determine whether you’re a legitimate user.
In an attempt to fight spam, many ISPs restrict the ability to send using an outgoing (SMTP) server not owned by them, usually by blocking port 25 for all traffic outside their own network, which means you cannot send with an SMTP server not owned by them if configured to use that port number. And it may happen the other way around as well, i.e. the outgoing server itself may look at the IP address you’re connecting from and refuse the connection if you’re outside its own network.
Something that often works is changing the outgoing server port to 587 (or whatever alternate port number the outgoing server listens to) instead of 25 and using some form of authentication in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, but two conditions must be satisfied for this change to work: (1) the ISP must not block that port as well AND (2) the outgoing server in question must listen to that port and accept a form of authentication not based on the IP address you’re connecting from.
Independent mail service providers not tied to a particular ISP, such as .Mac and Gmail, do allow authenticated SMTP access on port 587, which is the reason changing the outgoing server port number solves the problem for them if the ISP doesn’t block that port as well.
The following article, for example, describes several ways to address this issue in the case of .Mac, but can be useful for other mail accounts as well (not just .Mac), and applies to all versions of Mac OS X (not just Mac OS X 10.4.2 and earlier as the article states):

Using Mail Program with Gmail, Mail automatically bcc:s me on every email

I am using the Mail Program with my Gmail acoount. It works fine except Mail automatically bcc:s me on every email I send. I checked the Mail preferences and the box is unchecked in the composing section "Automatically cc: myself".
This does not happen when I use the Gmail.com web access, only when I send emails through mail.

Trying to use email app with gmail wrong password when its correct

this happened to me and it took me forever to figure out how to get my gmail to sync into my email app
on your phone all you do is goto your app and enter in your email and password for gmail or whatever.
then when it tries to save and all of that and the picture comes up saying incorrect then you click settings.
CLICK HOME BUTTON. GOTO SAFARI
type
http://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptcha
click continue
account access enabled:
click create and application-specific password in blue
click visit your GOOGLE ACCOUNT SETTINGS PAGE
then password and security......type your password
click manage application-specific passwords
type in the box like gmail iphone
LETTERS POPP UP IN YELLOW copy and paste the four set of four
go back to your email where we clicked settings before now change your original REAL password and past that four set of four into it. that was the only way i could get my email to sync

Your AirPort Extreme supports WPA.
WEP is outdated and considered fairly useless, so use WPA.
Be sure you are using AirPort Utility 5.6. If you are not running Lion then use AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
AirPort Utility 6.0 cannot administer 802.11b/g base stations.

My Yosemite POP account with Gmail and Apple Mail is gone

I just noticed in the last few days that my Apple Mail Gmail account has changed from POP to iMap without my intervention. It no longer has the drop-down box to choose one or the other. I want to keep my Apple Mail as a POP account, but I can no longer change it. Is this possible? If so, what do I do. FYI, on my iOS devices I use iMap accounts for my gmail mail. Thanks!

You can try reconfiguring the account as POP. Delete the account, then add it back. After filling in the 1st screen, hold down the option/alt key while clicking Continue. Fill in the necessary information, then click continue until all screens are filled in.

ICloud Stored Documents using Preview - Access with iPad

If I upload a PDF to iCloud using Preview, can I access that upload from my iPhone or iPad?

Huh, the issue went away, just as mysteriously as it arrived.
I'm thankful though.

I can't use Offline Mail with Gmail because Gears is not compatible with Firefox 4. Is this a Firefox issue or a Gears issue?

It appears that an update for Gears will be required for Offline Mail to work. I assume this is a Google issue. Do you know if they are working on this and if so, do you know how long it might take.

From what I've read, Google want's to use HTML 5 instead of Gears in the future. But they said they are going to support Gears until that solution is available.
Unfortunately, right now, we don't have either.

Using mac mail with gmail

what i would like to do is this:
when i delete an incoming mail i would like for it to go to all mail with a tag on it for trash later. i don't want it to go right to trash i want to throw the trash away at my discretion. and if the deleted mail are tagged, it's easier to clean up the all mail folder. also, need this to work with mac mail too.
what are the applicable key settings on both side to do this. i am having trouble getting this to happen. thank you.

Try deleting the non working accounts and re-creating them.

Can I use pop ups with numbers? It works on my iMac but I lose it when I send it to my iPad. Did I do something wrong?

I really need to ustilize drop down options in numbers spreadsheets. Is there any way to do it or any apps I can download to do it?

If you updated your existing account then try logging out of it on the iPad by tapping on the id in Settings > Store (Settings > iTunes & App Stores on iOS 6) and then log back in and see if that 'refreshes' the account on the iPad. If you created a new account then any content that you purchased/downloaded via the old account will remain tied to that old account, and only that old account can download updates to its apps or re-download it's purchases.

Using Mail with GMAIL (Pop)

Has anyone experienced the following issue? I have set up my two gmail accounts to work with Mail on my new MacBook and for some reason the Mail program is not receiving all the mail. I know I am getting more mail than what is showing up because GMAIL is also set up to work with my blackberry. My BBerry will jingle with a new email message and then I'll sit there and wait for Mail to receive the message and it will never arrive. I have Gmail set up to work with Outlook on my Dell PC and it is working fine. For some reason all the bloody messages are not making it to my inbox on the MacBook and I can't think what it is. I'm using PoP on the Gmail end because the Imap seemed to slow.

Okay, things are progressing somewhat. Mail has now imported my messages on from my primary account and seems to be okay (using IMAP). I decided to add my secondary gmail account that I use for work related messages and that (also using IMAP) doesn't seem to be working so smoothly. So far Mail has crashed 3 times and had to "re-import" all 13,000+ of my messages. I have no idea why. Also, any mail sent to the second gmail account is not showing up in the primary inbox and isn't giving me a "new mail" notification via the red number that shows up in the top right hand corner of the postage stamp. Any ideas?
