Using SQL/XML Functions or XSU to generate structured XML file.

Hi,
I have a view on a relational database I need to generate an XMLfile based on that view. I need to have below structure
<Employees>
<Employee A>
<Employee info>
</Employee info>
< Contact info>

</Contact info>
</Employee>
<Employee B>
<Employee info>
</Employee info>
< Contact info>

</Contact info>
</Employee>
</Employees>
Also in the next step I need to read from XML file and transfer data to the Database.
For this situation which way is the best one to generate XML file, using SQL/XML functions (XMLELEMENT, XMLAGG,... ) or using XSU?
and which one is the best to extract data from XML file to Oracle database?
Oracle DB version: 9.2.0.8.0
SQL*Plus version: 10.2.0.1.0
Thanks,
Shiva

I would do it from the database, but then again, I am a database / PL/SQL guy.
IMHO the database will deliver you with more options. I don't know about "speed" between the two.

• Using a variable value in CDATA for generating an XML type in Oracle

Hello,
I have prepared a function given below where I have some input variables & I have to generate one XML with those input variables as tag attribute value:
create or replace function NEW_PROJECT_DETAILS
( p_ReferenceId in varchar2 ,
p_Project_No in varchar2,
p_Project_Name in varchar2,
p_Project_Desc in varchar2 ,
p_Project_Type in varchar2,
p_Project_Location in varchar2,
p_Project_Status in varchar2 )
return xmltype
as
payload xmltype;
begin
dbms_output.put_line('Payload Started');
payload:= xmltype('
<ProjectDetails>
<RefID>'||p_ReferenceId||'</RefID>
<ProjectNo>'||p_Project_No||'</ProjectNo>
<ProjectName>'||p_Project_Name||'</ProjectName>
<ProjectDesc>'||p_Project_Desc||'</ProjectDesc>
<ProjectType>'||p_Project_Type||'</ProjectType>
<ProjectLocation>p_Project_Location</ProjectLocation>
/* <ProjectLocation>'||p_Project_Location||'</ProjectLocation> */
<ProjectStatus>'||p_Project_Status||'</ProjectStatus>
</ProjectDetails>');
dbms_output.put_line('Payload Comp1');
return payload;
end;
This procedure works absolutely fine.
Now the problem which I am having is that the variable p_Project_Location has value like "6747:BBO&M SBV".
Due to the '*&*' in that value I have to use CDATA. But i dont know how to pass this variable directly in the CDATA in the XML.
Please help me with this asap.
Thanks & Regards,

Hi,
If you absolutely want to use a CDATA section, then :
payload:= xmltype('
<ProjectDetails>
<RefID>'||p_ReferenceId||'</RefID>
<ProjectNo>'||p_Project_No||'</ProjectNo>
<ProjectName>'||p_Project_Name||'</ProjectName>
<ProjectDesc>'||p_Project_Desc||'</ProjectDesc>
<ProjectType>'||p_Project_Type||'</ProjectType>
<ProjectLocation>'||p_Project_Location||'</ProjectLocation>
<ProjectStatus>'||p_Project_Status||'</ProjectStatus>
</ProjectDetails>');Alternatively, you can escape non valid characters with DBMS_XMLGEN.CONVERT, e.g. :
payload:= xmltype('
<ProjectDetails>
<RefID>'||p_ReferenceId||'</RefID>
<ProjectNo>'||p_Project_No||'</ProjectNo>
<ProjectName>'||p_Project_Name||'</ProjectName>
<ProjectDesc>'||p_Project_Desc||'</ProjectDesc>
<ProjectType>'||p_Project_Type||'</ProjectType>
<ProjectLocation>'||dbms_xmlgen.convert(p_Project_Location)||'</ProjectLocation>
<ProjectStatus>'||p_Project_Status||'</ProjectStatus>
</ProjectDetails>');which outputs :

<ProjectDetails>
<RefID>1</RefID>
<ProjectNo>1</ProjectNo>
<ProjectName>PRJ1</ProjectName>
<ProjectDesc>This is project 1</ProjectDesc>
<ProjectType>P</ProjectType>
<ProjectLocation>6747:BBO&M SBV</ProjectLocation>
<ProjectStatus>S</ProjectStatus>
</ProjectDetails>Any basic XML parser should then convert back escaped characters when processing the document.
You can also use SQL/XML functions, which will take care of that automatically.
For example :
SELECT appendChildXML(
XMLType('<ProjectDetails/>'),
XMLForest(
'1'                 as "RefID",
'1'                 as "ProjectNo",
'PRJ1'              as "ProjectName",
'This is project 1' as "ProjectDesc",
'P'                 as "ProjectType",
'6747:BBO&M SBV'    as "ProjectLocation",
'S'                 as "ProjectStatus"
FROM dual;or,
SELECT appendChildXML(
XMLType('<ProjectDetails/>'),
XMLForest(
'1'                 as "RefID",
'1'                 as "ProjectNo",
'PRJ1'              as "ProjectName",
'This is project 1' as "ProjectDesc",
'P'                 as "ProjectType",
XMLCData('6747:BBO&M SBV') as "ProjectLocation",
'S'                 as "ProjectStatus"
FROM dual;

• Generating structured XML file based on relational data base

Hi,
I need to use XML DB to generate a structured XML file based on the relational oracle database. I start by using Oracle default table, emp,
Here is EMP data,
EMPNO ENAME DEPNO SAL
123.00 E1 20.00 1,000.00
124.00 E2 20.00 2,000.00
125.00 E3 20.00 2,000.00

128.00 E6 30.00 4,000.00
129.00 E7 40.00 7,000.00
I used this SQL statement to generate an XML output,
select XMLElement ("Department",
XMLAttributes(deptno as "DEPARTMENTNO"),
XMLElement("EmployeeName", ename),
XMLElement("Salary", sal)
) "Result"

</Department>
<Department DEPARTMENTNO="20">
<EmployeeName>E3</EmployeeName>
<Salary>2000</Salary>
</Department>
but I need this structure instead,
<Department DEPARTMENTNO="20">
<EmployeeName>E1</EmployeeName>
<Salary>1000</Salary>
<EmployeeName>E2</EmployeeName>
<Salary>2000</Salary>
<EmployeeName>E3</EmployeeName>
<Salary>2000</Salary>

Could you guide me how I can generate this kind of structure like master-detail structure and which document you recommend to obtain this point.

Hi,
If you want to write an xml into file, I think you should use PL/SQL.
Is it even possible to spool output into file without the query itself?
doen't show me a proper xml fileTo get well-formed xml, you also have to make a root element.
If you want also then use xmlroot(), but I haven't figure out
how to specify the encoding.

• Using SQL*Loader and UTL_FILE to load and unload large files(i.e PDF,DOCs)

Problem : Load PDF or similiar files( stored at operating system) into an oracle table using SQl*Loader .
and than Unload the files back from oracle tables to prevoius format.
I 've used SQL*LOADER .... " sqlldr " command as :
" sqlldr scott/[email protected] control=c:\sqlldr\control.ctl log=c:\any.txt "
Control file is written as :
LOAD DATA
INFILE 'c:\sqlldr\r_sqlldr.txt'
REPLACE
INTO table r_sqlldr
Fields terminated by ','
id sequence (max,1) ,
fname char(20),
data LOBFILE(fname) terminated by EOF )
It loads files ( Pdf, Image and more...) that are mentioned in file r_sqlldr.txt into oracle table r_sqlldr
Text file ( used as source ) is written as :
c:\kalam.pdf,
c:\CTSlogo1.bmp
c:\any1.txt
after this load ....i used UTL_FILE to unload data and write procedure like ...
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE R_UTL AS
l_file UTL_FILE.FILE_TYPE;
l_buffer RAW(32767);
l_amount BINARY_INTEGER ;
l_pos INTEGER := 1;
l_blob BLOB;
l_blob_len INTEGER;
BEGIN
SELECT data
INTO l_blob
FROM r_sqlldr
where id= 1;
l_blob_len := DBMS_LOB.GETLENGTH(l_blob);
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('blob length : ' || l_blob_len);
IF (l_blob_len < 32767) THEN
l_amount :=l_blob_len;
ELSE
l_amount := 32767;
END IF;
DBMS_LOB.OPEN(l_blob, DBMS_LOB.LOB_READONLY);
l_file := UTL_FILE.FOPEN('DBDIR1','Kalam_out.pdf','w', 32767);
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('File opened');
WHILE l_pos < l_blob_len LOOP
DBMS_LOB.READ (l_blob, l_amount, l_pos, l_buffer);
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Blob read');
l_pos := l_pos + l_amount;
UTL_FILE.PUT_RAW(l_file, l_buffer, TRUE);
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('writing to file');
UTL_FILE.FFLUSH(l_file);

UTL_FILE.FCLOSE(l_file);
END IF;
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Its working at last');
END R_UTL;
This loads data from r_sqlldr table (BOLBS) to files on operating system ,,,
-> Same procedure with minor changes is used to unload other similar files like Images and text files.
In above example : Loading : 3 files 1) Kalam.pdf 2) CTSlogo1.bmp 3) any1.txt are loaded into oracle table r_sqlldr 's 3 rows respectively.
file names into fname column and corresponding data into data ( BLOB) column.
Unload : And than these files are loaded back into their previous format to operating system using UTL_FILE feature of oracle.
so PROBLEM IS : Actual capacity (size ) of these files is getting unloaded back but with quality decreased. And PDF file doesnt even view its data. means size is almot equal to source file but data are lost when i open it.....
and for images .... imgaes are getting loaded an unloaded but with colors changed ....
Also features ( like FFLUSH ) of Oracle 've been used but it never worked
ANY SUGGESTIONS OR aLTERNATE SOLUTION TO LOAD AND UNLOAD PDFs through Oracle ARE REQUESTED.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks Justin ...for a quick response ...
well ... i am loading data into BLOB only and using SQL*Loader ...
I've never used dbms_lob.loadFromFile to do the loads ...
i 've opend a file on network and than used dbms_lob.read and
UTL_FILE.PUT_RAW to read and write data into target file.
actually ...my process is working fine with text files but not with PDF and IMAGES ...
and your doubt of ..."Is the data the proper length after reading it in?" ..m not getting wat r you asking ...but ... i think regarding data length ..there is no problem... except ... source PDF length is 90.4 kb ..and Target is 90.8 kb..
thats it...
So Request u to add some more help ......or should i provide some more details ??

• Limitations on using SQL/PLSQL Functions in Reports 6i/10g

Hi Gurus..
We have limitation on using TRIM, Regular Expressions, CASE Operator, Sub-query in cursor in Reports 6i/10g..
Could you please let us know all such limitations for Reports 6i/10g. Any reference document will be much more useful..
Any help will be greatly appreciated...
Thank You in Advance..

There is no documentation. E.g. the Reports 6i documentation can't say that you cannot use regular expressions, simply because it just didn't exist at the time.
The pl/sql engine in Forms and Reports is always behind on the database. You should put as much code as possible in database procedures and views if you want to make use of new (pl/)sql functionality.

• How to use SQL String functions with JPA and SAP NW

Hi Everyone,
I'm recently got the following problem:
I have a Web Service project using JPA. But as i found out SAPs JPA implementation or more precisely openSQL restricts the use of the LOWER() function, which converts a String to lower case.
Now I am looking for some sort of workaround. I want to execute the following JPQL query:
SELECT bp FROM BusinessPartner bp WHERE LOWER(bp.companyName) LIKE LOWER(:companyName)
I assume there is somewhere a flag to disable this restrictions, because there might be cases, like mine, where this standard functions are needed.
Kind Regards,
Carl

Hi Vladimir,
no it's not the same issue, because I am asking for a solution for this problem. There have to be ways to bypass this. Otherwise you can't use JPA properly. This is too much of a restriction!
Is there no possibility to change to another implementation than openSQL?

Carl

It's really a little difficult to answer your question without a bit more information. What version of JDeveloper are you using? What's your technology stack?
If this is JDeveloper 11+g+, with the Fusion technology stack, you can use a technique like the one described here:
http://groundside.com/blog/GrantRonald.php?title=jdeveloper_11_business_services_cascadin&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
If it's JDeveloper 10.1.3, with the default Web technology stack, look here:
http://radio.weblogs.com/0118231/stories/2004/09/23/notYetDocumentedAdfSampleApplications.html#62
If, as it looks like, this is really a question about generic JSPs (no JSF), you might actually have a bit more success on a generic JSP forum--using scriptlets hasn't really been best practices within JDev since...well, since JSTL became available, really. That was a number of years ago.
Like I said, there's really no direct way to use Javascript output in a scriptlet--unless you mean something like storing Javascript output in a hidden field, and using the value in a scriptlet on the next request. But by the time Javascript runs, any scriptlet from the current request will already have executed.

• What to import when using sql datediff() function

I want to use datediff("yyyy",obj3.trafDate,obj1.dateOfBirth) in jsp
to calculate the difference in years.
Plz help

Hi,
When importing data from relational data source, the steps are:
In SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), click the Model menu, and then click Import
from Data Source.
On the Connect to a Data Source page, select the type of database to connect to, and then click Next.
Follow the steps in the Table Import Wizard. On subsequent pages, you will be able to select specific tables and views or apply filters by using the Select
Tables and Views page or by creating a SQL query on Specify a SQL Query page.
As we can see on the steps, we need to select one database, so we needn't to write "USE AdventureWorks2012" on the query.

I am trying to call a function from a .dll to get information from a structure about a device (FT232H chip). I am using the "Call Library Function Node" to do this in LabVIEW. My issue is I do not know how to set up the "Call LIbrary Function Node" parameter for a C++ structure. How do I set up the pointer to FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE structure using the "Call Library Function Node" so that I can read back the device information?
The details of the C++ function and the structure are below.
Thanks for everyone's help!
The C++ function is the following:
FT_STATUS I2C_GetChannelInfo (uint32 index, FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE *chanInfo)
In = index (Index of the channel)
Out = *chanInfo (Pointer to FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE structure)
The pointer to the FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE is defined as:
typedef struct _FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE {
ULONG Flags;
ULONG Type;
ULONG ID;
DWORD LocId;
char SerialNumber[16];
char Description[64];
FT_HANDLE ftHandle;
} FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE;

Dennis/Nathan,
I tried to set up the "Call Library Function Node (CLFN)" correctly in order to read out Device Information from a FTDI Chip (FT232H) but when I run the VI LabVIEW crashes on me always.
I have attached the code. For the FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE structure I passed into the "CLFN" a constant cluster of all the structure elements and then I set up the node to:
Type: Adapt to Type
Data format: Handles by Value
I think LabVIEW crash may have something to do with the fact that the output of the dll function is using a pointer to a structure. With the Handles by value Data format I am unable to set the Pointer to structure.
Can you please take a quick look at the code to see if I am setting the CLFN up correctly?
Thanks!
Once again, here are the C++ Code Details:
FT_STATUS I2C_GetChannelInfo (uint32 index, FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE *chanInfo)
In = index (Index of the channel)
Out = *chanInfo (Pointer to FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE structure)
The pointer to the FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE is defined as:
typedef struct _FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE {
ULONG Flags;
ULONG Type;
ULONG ID;
DWORD LocId;
char SerialNumber[16];
char Description[64];
FT_HANDLE ftHandle;
} FT_DEVICE_LIST_INFO_NODE;

• Using the "consolidate" function has deleted 50% of my music files

Hi there, Any help appreciated: I stupidly thought that because I had music files in a couple of locations as well as itunes that using itunes to consolidate them would solve the problem. As the itunes help menu says for "consolidating your library":+Depending on how you've imported songs, videos, and other items into iTunes, your library can include items that are located in various places on your computer's hard disk or other locations. You can make sure that copies of all the files in your iTunes library are in your iTunes folder so that, for example, it's easier to move your library to a new computer.+ Now itunes can't "find" at least 50% of my tunes because it clearly hasn't copied anything: they are GONE. Supposedly "Files located outside the iTunes folder remain in their original locations, and copies are placed in your iTunes folder". This has not happened. I have searched my hard drive and they haven't been relocated anywhere I can find em, not even the recycle bin, or down the back of the couch. When I try to play or "get info" on a song I get an error message saying "the song could not be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to try to locate it?" Not only has itunes deleted half my music but it also created a big pile of folders by artist, with lots of handy subfolders by album, that usually contain NOTHING. There appears to be no rhyme or reason which music it has deleted. Has this happened to anyone else and is there a way to "locate" my lost music files and undo this?
Many thanks for any suggested solutions...

ITunes rearranges the files and folders only when the option to do so is checked under Edit•Preferences•Advanced•General. I think by default the option is unchecked and iTunes asks about it during install. After rearranging, it may look like lots of files are missing but they're probably just tucked into the Unknown Artist folder, where iTunes stashes any poorly tagged MP3.
Rest assured, iTunes always asks before deleting files, and actually it asks if the user wants to keep the file or "move to Recycle Bin," so the user can always retrieve from the Recycle Bin if he changes his mind.

• Getting the file name using ehdr:getRequestHeader function in style sheet

Hi, I am facing an issue while using ehdr:getRequestHeader function to get the name of the file, which was placed in FTPS server and read by FTP Adapter. In style sheet I am trying to get the file name as below.
<xsl:variable name="fileName"
select="ehdr:getRequestHeader('/fhdr:InboundFTPHeaderType/fhdr:fileName','fhdr=http://xmlns.oracle.com/pcbpel/adapter/ftp/;')"/>
and based on the file name I am trying to fetch the values from Property file, map it to a schema and make a SOAP service call.
When i use the above functionality in style sheet exception occurs and in ESB instance I am not able to view the exception.
It is saying as 'Details of the message are not available, The message details would have been purged'. In logs it is showing the following error trace.

When I use the same function getRequestHeader for FileAdapter, it is working fine. Do anyone know why this issue occurs? Is this an issue with environment?

As far as I can see the problem is the invoke of the SOAP service. This could be because of an empty filename but maybe there are other issues. First, make sure that the filename is read correctly by looking it up in the BPEL runtime process. Maybe the content is different than you expected it so that the read action for the properties give wrong result. Are you sure that ehdr is the correct prefix for the ftpheader?

• When we use SQLScript/CE Functions or procedures in real time scenario

Hi,
Can anyone explain me, when we use Scripted Calculation view or procedure using SQL/CE functions in real time project implementations.
Let me know some business requirement why we choose these instead of graphical view.

Hi Kumar,
So in real time if you want to develop some interface whether we use existing components or we will create own user defined products and components ??
We can do both.
If the pre-delivered content actually solves ur purpose by providing the exact format of data, then u should go for the existing components
If there is any change from the content provided, then u should change it and create own user defined products and components
What is the criteria behind choosing either of them ??
Thus the criteria is purely based upon the type of data formats u have to use. Existing component always saves lot of development time
