Using Terminal how do I mount a USB Fat16 formatted drive

I want to be able to look at the files stored on a USB drive (name is TravelDrive) in Terminal. If a enter mount it shows the drive on /dev/disk1s1 but can't figure out how to actually mount it

These commands worked for me:
sudo mkdir /volumes/traveldrive                                         //Create Mount Point
sudo mount -t msdos /dev/disk1s1 /volumes/traveldrive     //Mount Volume
I was just curious about how to do this in terminal.

    Hello,
I'm trying to mount a 4Tb USB 3.0 disk drive on a Sun Sparc T5-8 running Solaris 11.  It is also the LDOM primary and control domain.
I've verified that hal, dbus and rmvolmgr are running:

    Hi,
since your posting is a couple of weeks old I don't know if you already managed to get the disk working.
You might want to consider one of the following options to get it working as the problem is seen when the disk drive draws more power as the USB port can deliver.
    1)  use USB EXTENSION Y CABLE
    2)  use external USB hub with power supply
    3)  use USB disk with external power supply
For more details you might want to review

  • How could i mount the usb image drive at the desktop?

i'm using Lion and since my new computer has arrived I got a little disapointed! First, and at least for me the more awful issue, the image of a pluged usb drive DO NOT appear at desktop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how could that happen? it was a very usefull treat! my hope is my ignorance: i think i'm not dealing properly with my new computer, i really hope there is a hidden way to activate that!
second: why **** the quickplayer DO NOT recognise subtitles? every time i try to watch a movie with subtitle the quicktime closes and the quicktime 7 opens!
third: why activity monitor DO NOT show the right disk free space? even erasing huge files the available free space is frozen! do not increase!
    sorry for my english mistakes!

Thanks for the reply. I was able to save the data on the Macbook Air whose HD got corrupted by using File Sharing (ethernet connecting two Macbook Airs).
I am also going to make a disk image of the HD using Disk Utility and mount that Disk Image onto an external hard drive. That way I can save the hard drive contents.

    New struggling Mac user

Hello, I have a similar situation of trying to get my Maxtor One Touch4 external HDD to connect to the AEBS for use as a central storage location for files that I can access from my new Mac Mini and my Windows XP laptop. Based on your reply to David's post I wanted to share my experience and see if you have any suggestions.
    1. I connected the HDD to the USB port on the AEBS and the drive shows up in the Disk Tab of Airport Utility but I cannot access any folders on the drive.
    2. When the HDD is connected directly to my Mini I can access all files on the disk but I cannot save newly created files to the external HDD. In Finder, my HDD shows up in the Device list and if I right click on the HDD and select Get Info this shows my Sharing & Permissions as "read only" for this drive and the "shared folder" checkbox is unchecked. I have gone into System Preferences and turned on File Sharing and I see my name as the admin with read/write permission for this HDD.
    3. I'm guessing, based on other posts of yours that I've read, that my situation might have to do with the formatting of my external HDD. It was previously used exclusively with a Dell PC running Windows 7. I will research reformatting the drive but once I do this will my PC laptop running Windows XP still be able to access this drive if it is connected through the AEBS? Also, I may be a bit confused as to how the File Sharing works on a Mac and how it applies to my issue.
    Thank you for your assistance.

  • How to stop Windows from mounting a usb fat32 flash drive

Here's the problem. I have 4 identical Sandisk Cruiser 32GB flash drives. Windows has never mounted these drives in the past, until several months ago. Now Windows is mounting 2 of these drives but not the other 2. When the drives get mounted I end
up with about 5GB of files being added to each drive because they now show System Volume Information and the Recycle Bin. The amount of data added varies depending on the system I plug up to. On one Win 7 machine it can add up to 10+ GB. I would like to
be able to use the entire space for my backups but am unable to. These two drives are only used for Music and Videos. Is there a way to stop these two drives from being mounted in windows systems?
    Thanks,  Bill

Sorry but my figures are not exaggerated. Right now on this machine "System Volume Information" is showing as 3.2 GB and "Recycle Bin" is showing as 2.9 GB.  I don't own these computers I use so I can't make changes to them such
as emptying the recycle bin. I only use portable applications from my flash drives on friends systems. By windows loading these two folders to my flash drives it it effectively stopping me from being able to use all the space.
Now as I mentioned in the first post, windows is only loading the SysVolInfo and recycle bin folders to 2 of the 4 drives. I am able to use ChkDsk on the two drives that are unaffected by windows but not on the other two. I get the message that windows
can't check the volume while it is in use and would I like to check it at startup. This always fails because, I think, These computers do not recognize the usb drives until windows is loaded. I have a work around for this in a utility that will unmount the
two drives and run ChkDsk and then remount them.
This doesn't answer the question though as to why all of a sudden this is happening to 2 of the 4 drives? And on several different machines? Windows does assign a drive letter to all 4 drives as it always has however the 2 drives without the system
folders are able to be scanned in windows without unmounting them.
I would really appreciate any insight into this behavior I could get.
    Thanks, Bill

  • Terminal/Unix Command to Mount External USB Drive?

I am having a probelm with the directory on an external HDD. The "device" is showing up in the utility software (DRIVE GENIUS/DISK UTILITY) but not the "volume," so it can't affect any repairs except INTIALIZE. So, I'm presuming the drive is physically okay - just the directory is fouled up. Is there some unix command to run that will repair the directory in some manner? Thanks!

    Hi Metroxing,
What you presume is not a given but yes, the existence of the device file greatly decreases the relative probability of your having a hardware problem. However, I have a question. I'm not sure of what you mean by the term "directory".
In "UNIX" jargon a directory is that which in "Mac" jargon would be a filesystem "folder". However, there is another data structure in the filesystem that I think is called a "directory". I assume that's simply an abstraction of the Catalog B-Tree and related files. I know about this use of the term "directory" from discussions and readings on Alsoft's DiskWarrior. That is supposed to do exactly what you want, "rebuild the directory structure", and is a relatively inexpensive "best-of-breed" solution.

  • How to install Windows without USB or DVD drive on 2009 MacBook

    Problem
I have a MacBook Pro mid 2009 fitted with both an HDD and SSD.
Obviously I had to remove the DVD SuperDrive to fit in the HDD into the Optical Bay.
This is awesome big and quick storage, but you can't use it for BootCamp anymore, BootCamp Assistant says. Because it needs the optical drive for installing Windows and it won't accept it via USB.
The good thing is, that you don't need the Bootcamp Assistant for installing Windows.
    So:
I have Mac Os:X Mavericks working from my SSD (which I fitted to the HDD bay for increased speed)
The HDD is installed in the former optical drive bay, with one MacOS Ext partition for Mac storage and the other one being NTFS with Windows.
    Solution
The solution is a little bit tricky, needs either a virtual Windows machine or a real one and it involves removing and refitting your hard drive, but on an older MacBook Pro like 2009s that originally came with an Optical Drive there is no other way. afaik.
    Step 0.5
    Backup your Data
    Step 1
    Partitioning your desired drive
You can do this using Apples Disk Utility if you have installed either Tuxera NTFS or NTFS 3G. Or you do that in step 3 in Windows.
I'd recommend a size of at least 30 GB, Windows 7 alone takes up around 20 GB
    Step 2
Remove the hard drive and connect it to a windows machine
Afaik the next step has to happen in Windows with full hardware access. If you want to use a virtual machine i.e. VM Ware or Parallels you need to connect it via USB as an external device, otherwise it won't have full access to the partitions. Obviously you can use a real Windows computer too. Still you're gonna need to remove the drive from your Mac.
    Step 3
Re-format and set "active" partition state
Format desired partition with NTFS, quick format works fine. (just in case)
Open your Windows 7 Image (or Disk) and Copy the directories "Boot" and "Sources" as well as "Bootmgr" onto the partition
    Make the Partition bootable:
Using Windows XP, Vista, or 7, open CMD as Admin (Windows key + R, type CMD, hit Enter)
Enter the following commands, (replace X with what applies to your hard drive):
    diskpart
    list disk
    select disk X
    list partition
    select partition X
    active
    exit
    X:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt60 X:
    Exit and shut down
(Source and additional images: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/)
(If this is somehow possible using Mac Tools, please let us know!)
    Step 4
Fit the HDD back into your mac
    Just that.
    Step 5
    Install windows
Start your Mac and immediately press and hold the alt (option) key until you can select the other drive to boot windows.
Install using advanced installation to select the same partition.
    Step 6
    Clean up
After the installation press cmd + r (in windows) and type and run msconfig
    Click to the Boot tab.
Click 'Windows Setup (\windows)', and hit Delete.
    Click OK.
    Click 'Exit without restart'.
And lastly, delete the ‘Sources’ folder from your hard drive root (this will free up 2-3gb).
    Final Step:
Install the Mac drivers (Get the right version here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634 )
Recommendation: Use Winclone Pro to backup your precious installation.
On a footnote: This article was a big help to me: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/)

Have you tried resetting the PRAM? http://gigaom.com/2011/07/26/when-to-reset-your-macs-pram-and-smc/
Which Windows version are you trying to install? If I remember right, you can't use windows 8 on these older machines.
Other than that it's hard to say what could have gone wrong. I can only suggest going through the steps again carefully and making sure everything worked the way it should.
Have a look at this article too for a slighly more verbose instruction on making a drive bootable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-Windows-7-without-USB-or-DVD-without-upg ra/

  • HT4106 can you use this device to connect an external usb connection hard drive to the ipad?

I have  an I pad and external hard drive which i want to be able to connect together.... is this the device i need?

You can't connect a USB HD using the camera connection kit.
There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.
    Another option:
Expand your iPad's storage capacity with HyperDrive

If I'm understanding you correctly, you want to mount X partition with a pre-existing filesystem.  It has pre-existing data, and you want to keep that data intact.
If this is the case, answer "no" when it asks "Would you like to create a filesystem on /dev/sdb1?"

  • How can I write to a ntfs formatted drive?

I know there are some third party apps for a fee but this seems like a simple enough and popular request that Apple should address. Can you tell me if apple has a solution for this?
    I appreciate your help.
    Thanks,
    John

No Apple solution (well, the solution would be for you to only buy Mac stuff and reformat your hard drive to Mac ).
NTFS drivers for Macs (there may be others):
    Paragon NTFS - http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/ - recommendation: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18708633
    Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.2  - http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33122/tuxera-ntfs
    NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5.3 - http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26288/ntfs-for-mac-os-x
There used to be NTFS-3G which I believe was free, but it looks like it is now Tuxera.  Maybe an old version would work (or maybe not).

  • ZFS (ZEVO) formatted drive can't be used as event/project drive

Started using Zevo ZFS recently and notices that a ZFS formatted drive doesn't show up in drive list where the events and projects are. Same disk worked before when it was HFS+ formatted. Would be great if FCPX would also support other filesystems. Exporting and inporting is fine, it's just that the ZFS drive is not shown in the event/project list.
    Regards,
    Peter

This is true of many of the Apple applications which are designed to make use of features of HFS+. So the use of them on other file ssytems as you have discovered is either not possible or thy fail to function fully.

  • How to use Terminal with KeySpan USB serial adaptor cable?

I own a KeySpan model USA-19HS to use with our MacBookPro when working on clients networking equipment that require serial communication. I have used ZTerm with excellent luck, but it costs, and is yet another application that I dont really want. I would like to know if any one out there has exacing instructions on how to use Terminal with this adaptor. If I could write a file that had, say, the couple most common settings (9600-8-n-1, 57600-8-n-1, et cetera) that I could simply click on, to open a new Terminal window with those settings, then simply close that, and open a new window (apple+n) in order to get back to a default settings terminal window. All feedback is most appreciated.
    Thanks so much, Jason Sjobeck

Hi, Jason. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "All feedback is most appreciated."OK.
    1. Have you considered discussing this with Keyspan Support?
    2. Have you read the section "OSX has Terminal.app - why do I need ZTerm?" on the ZTerm Home Page? That seems to explain why one needs an app like ZTerm.
    3. A quick search of Keyspan's FAQ for your product and terminal doesn't yield much more than how to find the serial ports using Terminal.
Likewise, this Google search also yields little, and variants of that search of such weren't particularly help either.
It appears your inquiry seems to be a somewhat esoteric topic.
    4. Apparently, ZTerm X is a bit long in the tooth and there's no Universal Binary for it. It sounds, however, like you've tried it running on your MBP under Rosetta, yes?
    5. In researching alternatives to ZTerm for you, I note the followng:• The comment from "Reverb" on this page suggests C-Kermit or Kermit as a free alternative.
    • This tip on Mac OS X Hints cites Minicom as another option.6. You may want to try your question on the Unix Discussion.
