Using the soft front panel to take a differential measurement.

I have a PXI- 5152 digitizer and need to use the soft front panel to take a differential measurement. I found how to do this by programmatically, but cannot figure out how to do this  on the soft front panel. Can anyone help?

Hi Towleb1,
From you second sentence in your question I assume you already found this resource, but just in case I wanted to provide you with a white paper called Differential Measurements Using High-Speed Digitizers. This is a fantastic resource that includes flowcharts and instructions for hardware self-calibration, probe compensation, gain and offset calibration, and actually taking the differential measurement itself.
As far as taking a differential measurement with the NI SCOPE Soft Front Panel, are you talking about taking a single differential measurement or are you talking about taking a differential measurement between two channels on the PXI-5152?
You mentioned that you found how to do this programmatically, but is there a reason you specifically want to use the NI SCOPE Soft Front Panel instead of LabVIEW?

    Hi,
I have attached here an example of doing the same using shift registers and local variables. Take a look. Shift register is always a better option than local variables.

  • NI 5112 Scope soft front panel setting problem

    Hi,
I tried to meausre a 5.1 voltage using SCOPE soft front panel. I could get 5.1 AC voltage from SCOPE soft front panel,
but it did not go back to 0 volt after 1 to 2 second in a horizontal line. Nornamlly, my 5,1V will go back to 0 volts
in my oscilloscope after 1 to 2 seconds because I am measureing a shock beep pulse waveform.
    Can you tell why?
I am going to give you my setting.  I was trying Y-axis 2 volt/div, AC coupe, ch 0,  X-axis is 10 microsecond/div. normal mode.
Trigger: edge, rising, ch 0, trigger lever 2.5.
I am in a urgent. Coould you pls send me quickly

I'm sorry if I don't completely understand what the behavior is but if I understand you correctly, you have a signal that goes from 1 volt, peaks at 5.1, and then slowly drops to 1 volt again.  That entire signal takes 1 to 2 seconds.
I am not sure if the problem you are seeing is 1. You can never get the full signal in the SFP or 2. You get the signal ok but the SFP does not wait for you to hit a button to try and acquire again.
If the question is number 1
If this is the issue it sounds like you are able to capture the 5 Volt peak, however it never goes back down to 1 volt.  You mentioned that you have the X-Axis set to 10 microseconds/ div.  Therefore the SFP is only acquiring an total of 100 microseconds, and if the reference is set to 50%, then you are only getting 50 microseconds of signal after the trigger, so you will not be able to acquire the 1-2 seconds it takes for your signal to drop.  I would suggest increasing the number of points and slowing down the Time/Division.  You should be able to change those settings a few times to actually get 2 seconds worth of signal.
    2. If you want to simply hit a button and the SFP will acquire again then you need to change the mode to SGL.   Then you just need to hit the run or pause button and the SFP will acquire again.

  • VSG Soft Front Panel

Does a soft front panel exist for the PXI Vector Signal Genreators (5672, 5673E)?  I found the http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/5620 but was curious if there was anything similar to the Soft Front panels created for the scopes, specans, etc.. (i.e. NI-RFSA Soft Front Panel,...)
    THANKS!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the post!
There is not a soft front panel for our VSG's.  If you want to perform tasks similary to what a SFP might perform, you can use the "Test Panel" in MAX or start with a simple example from the LabVIEW Example Finder.
    1.  The Test Panel can be opened by locating the RF Upconverter, such as the PXI-5610, under "Devices and Interfaces" in MAX.  You can right click on the device (i.e. "Dev1") and then select "Test Panels...".  You should get a window that looks like this.
It's a very simple interface that lets you generate a single tone which can be handy for testing connections to a DUT or VSA.
    2.  If you are programming in CVI or LabVIEW, there are plenty of examples to start from.  From the LabVIEW Getting Started Window, click "Help»Find Examples...".  Then navigate to "Hardware Input and Output»Modular Instruments»NI-RFSG".  From here, there are lots of examples.  Which example you'll want to start with will depend on what you are trying to accomlish.  There are several examples for different modulation schemes similar to what you posted under the "»Modulation Toolkit" folder.

  • Soft Front Panel PXI-5122 and RealTime

Can anyone tell me if the PXI 5122 Digitizer has a Soft Front Panel that is supported in LabView Realtime (8.6).
When I load the one that is on my system, it doesn't recognize my external pxi chassis hardware.
    Thanks.

The soft front panel that ships with the 5122 works only under Windows with devices directly accessible from Windows.  Since RT is a separate OS running over a network, the SFP will not work with it.  It could be modified to do this, however.  I will pass your suggestion on.  You may want to consider entering a product suggestion yourself (use this link).  Strange as it may seem, suggestions from customers are weighted more highly than suggestions from internal engineers .

  • NI DC Power Soft Front Panel Error - 200247

    Hello All,
I am having trouble opening the ni DC power soft front panel. The error message I repeatedly am seeing is below:
When I try to run the vi mentioned in the error above, the same error occurs:
How can I go about getting my soft front panel to work? I have been using the DC power API to execute tests over the past week using the example VI's, but am at a point where the soft front panel would be very helpful to my workflow.
    I am using the following:
    NI PXIe-4139 SMU
    NI PXIe-1082 Chassis
    NI PXIe-8360 Controller
    Windows 7 64bit
    Labview 14
    MAX 14.5.0f0
    DC Power 14.2
I have tried running the soft front panel using clean installs of DC Power 14.1 and 14.2 and see the same error message. I have uninstalled the other modular instrument driver packages on my computer, NI-Fgen and NI-Scope, reinstalled DC Power, and still I see the error message. It could be that I am not uninstalling these software packages 100% correctly (I use the windows add/remove to NI Remove software dialog process....)
I appreciate any help getting this DC Power soft front panel working.
    Thank You,
    Andrew Goett

    Hi Andrew,
Can you possibly give me a MAX technical report for your system?  The instructions can be found here.  Use Method 1.
Also, can you check which version of niModInst.dll you have on your system?  This file can be found here: <Program Files>\IVI Foundation\IVI\Bin\niModInst.dll
Right-click on the file, select Properties, and then click on the Details tab.  The information I need is the "Project version" field.  See the image below:
In addition to the MAX report, could you send me a ZIP file of the contents of this folder: <Program Files>\National Instruments\Shared\niModInst
I've attached a simple program (NI-ModInst Code.vi) to test if NI-ModInst is failing across the board or if it only is failing to identify NI-DCPower devices.  Open the program, select a driver that you have installed on your system, and run the program.  The code should tell you the number of devices you have in the system that are associated with that driver, as well as list out the model numbers for those devices.  This list will include simulated devices.  Test the code with various drivers in your system to see if you get the same error.
Let me know how this works out.

  • SCXI Switches not showing up in NI-Switch Soft Front Panel

    Hi,
I have an SCXI 1001 chassis containing about a dozen SCXI 1160 switch modules. The first switch module is connected to a PXI-4060 DMM card in a seperate PXI chassis. MAX 4.0 was able to auto-detect the switches, and they show up under the "Devices and Interfaces" folder. However, when I run the NI-Switch Soft Front Panel application, the SCXI switches do not show up as selectable switches. Are there additional properties that need to be configured in order for the Soft Front Panel to detect the SCXI switches? Is there an online manual/guide for doing this?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    VRMan

If you have the option of using a DAQmx supported device as the controller for the SCXI chassis, I would recommend changing your SCXI configuration so that your SCXI devices show up in the Soft Front Panel.
If the PXI-4060 (which is not supported under DAQmx) is the only SCXI chassis controller you have, a workaround is to use the Traditional(Old) Soft Front Panel. The Old Soft Front Panel has not been updated with switch modules since NI-SWITCH 2.4 and is not currently supported. But given that you have SCXI-1160s in your chassis, it should work for your use case.
We install the Old Soft Front Panel at Program Files\IVI\Drivers\niSwitch\OldSoftFrontPanel

  • How to place event callback components and "main-VI" components in the same Front Panel?

    What I'm trying to accomplish:
Place a .NET component, which generates events, and other standard LabVIEW components in the same Front Panel. The standard LabVIEW components should be updated when events are being generated in the .NET component.
How I tried to solve it:
    Problem:
The event callback code must reside in a separate event callback VI. In order to "pass the event up" to the main VI I tried to use a global variable. The interrupt does occur:
but I was hoping that the string indicator would be updated when the event occurred, but it wasn't.
    Questions:
What's the best way to solve what I try to accomplish? If I want to solve the problem on the picture above, how would I do it (it may not be the best solution, but I'm still curious what's wrong)? Please feel free to be over-explicit when replying as I am novice LabVIEW programmer. Thanks in advance for any help.

There are two bundle functions for creating clusters. The function simply called Bundle operates almost exactly like the Build Array function I showed. The type of the output cluster depends on whatever you wire in as inputs. You don't have to supply a specific type parameter.
The function called Bundle by Name takes in a specific type of cluster in the top input and allows you to fill in the values of that specific type of cluster. To create the specific type of cluster you want, you need to create a cluster of string references. Here's how to do that:
Go to the Front panel and drop down an empty cluster shell.
Go to the Refnum palette and drop down a Generic Control Refnum. Now here's a cool trick to turn that generic refnum into a string-specific refnum (a so-called strictly-typed refnum). Grab a string from the controls palette and drag it into the Generic Control Refnum. Once you drop it, you'll see the refnum change its icon to display a string picture.
Make copies of this string refnum (as many as you need) and add it to the cluster shell.
Now, if you're making specific types of clusters to work with, now is the absolute best time to learn about typedefs if you haven't already. It will save you hours and hours (if not days) of development time in the future. Trust me!

  • Switch Soft Front Panel, Active Device misassigned

I have a PXI chassis with, among other modules, two PXI-2350 switches.  Using the Switch Soft Front Panel, it seems the names assigned in the Active Device list ( the two 2350's in this case ) are backwards to what I expect.  Is there a way to reassociate these names to the physical 2350's ?
    Thanks
    Solved!

    Confustus,
That is an interesting issue that I have never seen before, your devices in Soft Front Panel should be linked to the devices as labeled in MAX. I was wondering, when you say "Using MAX, we can select a route that connects the power source to the DMM using "Switch 1" ( for example ), and we can see the voltage reading show up on the 4071 Soft Front Panel as expected", what exactly do you mean? If you were to select your hardware device and click test panels, the NI Switch Soft Front Panel loads. Are you saying that when selecting test panels and loading Switch Soft Front Panel from max works as expected, however opening the application outside of MAX does not work?
Or are you talking about the Test Panels that you open up within NI Switch Executive? The test panels for NI Switch Executive refer to the NI Switch Executive virtual device name, not the DAQmx device name. If you had named the NI Switch Executive Virtual device name in a similar manner, this could be part of the confusing problems that you are seeing. See images below:
NI DAQmx Test Panel Selection Brings this up.
NI Switch Executive test panel brings this up. If these device names are similar, I can see how this could be confusing.

  • Scope soft front panel signal position

I'm using the new version of the Scope Soft Front Panel, 2.7f0.
How can I change the position of Ch 0 relative to Ch 1. When they are right on top of eachother, its not as clear. The older soft scope allowed them to be moved.
You can see in the attached picture that there is a little action cursor available as I hover over the channel designator on the left. But no action is available.
Anybody know how to do this? I don't want to use the offset values, because then I have to change the trigger levels as well

    Thanks Raajot,
Unfortunately, the first method does not work. Seems like the channels
move together and can't be separated. However, changing to the classic
mode with the scroll bars works fine.
Its nice having the controls for both channels available in the new
mode, but I can't have the signals laying ont op of each other, so I
suppose I'll just have to stick with the old mode.
Does changing the vertical postion apply to only one channel on your
installtion? On mine, as soon as I pick a percentage, that same value
appears if I pick a different channel on the channel selector control.
Strangely enough, the menu method works fine in the classic mode. I
suspect a bug with the new mode. Otherwise, I'd be able to drag the
channel indicator in the new mode,  similar to having scroll bars in
    the classic mode.

  • NI DC Soft Front Panel, minorbug, minor bug with PXI-4110

    Hi
The NI DC Soft Front Panel V14.0, with the PXI-4110, the negative voltage scroll, works as expected to -10V, but then rolls over to 0. If one changes in -1V steps, it goes.... -8, -9, -10, -1, -2 ..... instead of -8, -9, -10, -11, -12 ...
While at it, a simple thing I miss is a on/off button for all three voltages.

I fully agree with both of your statements, I have filed a Correction Action Report which you can monitor in next releases of DCPower to see if this is fixed with the SFP. Number of CAR: 512257
