Using Time Capsule with existing network?

I am planning on purchasing a Time Capsule, but would like to know if it's right for me before I buy it. Can someone please answer these questions I have about it;
What security do I have available on the Time Capsule to stop other people on the network accessing my backup, any attached devices and the settings of the Time Capsule?
If I plugged my Time Capsule into a network switch (switch is connected to the main router), will I then be able to attach ethernet devices to the Time Capsule without any speed loss for those devices?
I already have wifi but I would like to set up the Time Capsule with a different name and password (and leave the current wifi alone). If someone connected to the Time Capsule, can they access the devices which are connected to the original wifi, and the ones connected to the main router by ethernet?
Can I easily create a partition on my Time Capsule, so I can have 100GB of space available for copying/sharing files directly and then the rest for Time Machine backups?
Can iOS access the files or back up to the Time Capsule?
If I connected a printer to the Time Capsule, can iOS devices use it to print?
I know there's a lot of questions, but I'd appreciate any help with any of the questions.
Thanks.

What security do I have available on the Time Capsule to stop other people on the network accessing my backup, any attached devices and the settings of the Time Capsule?
There is a device password that will be required of any user who wants to access the Time Capsule disk. If the Time Capsule is also configured to provide a wireless network, users will need to enter the wireless network password to be able to connect to the network.
If I plugged my Time Capsule into a network switch (switch is connected to the main router), will I then be able to attach ethernet devices to the Time Capsule without any speed loss for those devices?
In this case, the Time Capsue would be configured to operate in Bridge Mode. It functions as another Ethernet switch in that type of setup. Speed should not be affected.
I already have wifi but I would like to set up the Time Capsule with a different name and password (and leave the current wifi alone). If someone connected to the Time Capsule, can they access the devices which are connected to the original wifi, and the ones connected to the main router by ethernet?
Yes, since the Time Capsule will be in Bridge Mode, devices that connect through the wireless on the Time Capsule will be on the same network as your main router...users connecting through the wireless on the Time Capsule and will be able to "see" other network devices.
Can I easily create a partition on my Time Capsule, so I can have 100GB of space available for copying/sharing files directly and then the rest for Time Machine backups?
No. In order to partition the Time Capsule drive, it would need to be removed from the Time Capsule case, placed in a separate caddy or enclosure and then connected directly to your Mac to allow Disk Utility access to the disk for the partition procedure.  Then, you would have to reinstall the Time Capsule drive back in the Time Capsule case.
In addition to a lot of work, this will void the warranty on the product.
Can iOS access the files or back up to the Time Capsule?
iOS devices back up to iTunes on your computer. Then, when a Mac backs up to the Time Capsule using Time Machine, all of the data is backed up. In other words, iOS devices cannot back up directly to the Time Capsule drive using Time Machine.
Using an App like Filebrowser, it is possible to have the iOS device browse the contents of the Time Capsule drive, but the iOS device will not be able to open files that have  been backed up using Time Machine.
The iOS device will likely open most other normal files stored on the Time Capsule drive if the proper App is installed on the iOS device.
If I connected a printer to the Time Capsule, can iOS devices use it to print?
Yes if the printer is AirPrint compatible. Check this Apple support document to see if your printer is on the list of compatible devices.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4356
Otherwise, you can add an App like Print Central to the iOS device to possibly allow printing from the iOS devices.

  • Use Time Capsule with Existing Router and WAP

We've added an existing TC to a new network installation where there is now a Cisco router and separate wireless AP and a new SIP phone system. How do I best setup or reconfigure the Time Capsule so our customer can still use it for wireless backup from their Apple notebooks?
We seem to be getting conflcts with the Time Capsule on the same subnet--capturing network and Internet ports!
    Thanks!
    Chet - Houston

Go to internet page.. on the top menu item you are offered, internet connection by ethernet or pppoe.. choose ethernet.. on the menu option below it, you determine how the TC will share the connection. Choose bridge.. done. When you do that the TC will make the WAN port available to LAN.

Is it straightforward to put the TimeCapsule into bridge mode?
The only thing the customer needs to do is their 'backups' with this unit.  We will add a separate WAP on the subnet. I assume the Time Capsule can still reside on the same subnet...
There are mixed PC, Apple notebooks, and printers, and a new SIP phone system on this LAN.
Does the TC also capture or reserve ports that we can exclude?
    Thanks,
    Chet.
Why not use the TC as a WAP.. you bridged it and now it is already a WAP.
The TC will not capture any port that I know of. It will exist happily in the same subnet, although as I mentioned if the Mac clients lose connection after a day or two, there may be an issue with arp timing out or some discovery protocol not working. Lion is maybe more suspectible at the moment. The problem is inconsistent so not sure yet.

  • Using Time Capsule with existing wireless router

I am thinking about getting a TC, but I wanted to know if the following configuration would work:
DSL modem to existing wireless B router. Then have the TC recieve internet from the existing wireless router.
Basically I want to put the old router in the basement where the only wiring is, but put the TC upstairs on my desk so I can connect the printer to it.
    Thanks!

Although, you can join an existing network using a Time Capsule as a wireless client, it’s recommended that the existing network is an 802.11n network.

  • Using Time Capsule With Existing Airport Network

    Hi All,
I already have an Airport connection and would like to setup TimeCapsule on that network. Do I need to plug in an ethernet cable? Will it conflict with my existing airport base station?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

    Hi All,
I went through the setup on the Airport Utility but honestly I'm very confused as to how to set this up. It's being recognized by the Aiport utility but when I got to configure it, the airport utility says "Please make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)" I've connected it to my Ethernet port even though I thought I shouldn't have to and it still gives me this message. Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • How do I add time capsule to existing network?

How do I add time capsule to existing network?

Ok.. I am still confused as an Express only has one ethernet for LAN not 4. So you perhaps have an extreme..
If you have an airport extreme.. plug the TC into the extreme with ethernet.. and set it up as bridge in router.
You can also create a wireless network that works alongside the extreme.. this is the best way.
It is also possible to setup the TC to extend the wireless of the extreme.. but this will make backups much slower.. at least half the speed if not worse.

  • Can I use time capsule with a ASUS (RT-N16)router?

I will use a router with vpn. Can I use time capsule with it? And if yes, how do I connect them?

There is no vpn built into the native firmware of N16 so I presume you are going to use third party.
Just plug in the TC and bridge it.. ie go to Internet tab of airport utility and select connection sharing off.
wireless then you will need to figure out.. you can setup roaming on 2.4ghz by using identical wireless name = ssid and security but lock both to different channels.. pick out of 1, 6, 11
In a PC network make sure you use the TC with a new name.. no spaces no special characters.. same with wireless. TC also restrict wireless on 2.4ghz to only 20mhz.. if you have the N16 set to 40mhz you will have to be extra careful with channels.. 40mhz will use up two channels and only one remains.. so your household will have filled the 2.4ghz.
Someone suggested you can turn off 2.4ghz in the TC by not naming it.. When I try that it kicks up an error that it has to be named. So perhaps someone else has a suggestion of how to turn off 2.4ghz.
You can turn off 5ghz by unchecking it. Seems mighty strange that you cannot turn off 2.4ghz but you can turn off 5ghz.

  • Can i use time capsule with iphone

can i use time capsule with iphone and ipad and how can i access my data at anywhre using time capsule

TC is not designed for ipad or iphone or any iOS device.
You should use them with cloud if you want remote access to your data do it via cloud.. you cannot easily get remote access to the TC from iOS device.

I was just wondering if I can use time capsule with my iphone for both back up and to access the hard drive on the capsule?

I don't think backup is supported but you may be able to access the TC's internal drive, from the iPhone, with an application like: NetPortal
Note: I haven't actually tried this app, so if someone else has and was successful in accessing the TC's drive they can certainly chime in.
Follow-up. Just downloaded and installed this app ... and I can now verify that it, indeed, can access both my TC's internal and externally attached USB HDD.

  • Can I use time capsule with a USB cellular modem?

Can I use time capsule with a USB cellular modem?

No, since the USB port on the Time Capsule will only support a compatible printer and/or hard drive.

  • Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Can I connect and use Time Capsule with two printers?

Sure, if the printers connect using the Ethernet port, you have 3 ports on the Time Capsule.
If the printers connect using wireless only, the Time Capsule will support up to 50 connections.
If your printers connect using USB, then you will need a powered USB hub. Something like this, for example:

  • Can you use Time Capsule with any wifi extender?

Can you use Time capsule with any wifi extenders?

No, since Apple designed their routers to only work with other Apple routers.
I suppose that it is possible that another brand might work, but since you won't know this until you try, it would be a good idea to have a clear understanding of the store's return policy before you decide to gamble.

  • Replace Time Capsule in existing network

Based on previous posts, I see it is recommended to "start from scratch."  That's ok.
I will be replacing an old Time Capsule with a new (current gen).
Existing network includes two Airport Extremes.
Should they be reset?  If so... soft, hard or factory?
    Thx.

It really helps to start over. So my response is always factory reset.
But it does depend on how the Extremes are being used.. As roaming network with ethernet back to whatever is the main router,, it is less of an issue.. if they are extending wireless it is a very big issue.

  • How to use Time Capsule with USB HD attached

I recently bought a 500 mb TC, so am somewhat a newbie to it, and am already wondering if I should have bought the 1 Terrabyte model.
I am trying to figure out exactly how I can use the USB HD facility on the TC. Is the point of this that I can achieve extra Time Machine/Time Capsule backup-capacity automatically, i.e. if space runs out on the TC it will go to the USB HD automatically? Or do I have to choose this USB HD in Time Machine options?
Are there other ways of using the attached USB HD? For example to mirror the TC, for an extra level of safety. Or could I choose within Time Machine to backup only to this USB drive? Or could you use it as an additional Hard Drive that is nothing to do with Time Machine backups at all, just an extra HD accessed wirelessly?
Could you even add extra Hard Drives to Time Capsule with some sort of USB hub or in a chain.
I can't seem to find info about this in manual , so replies gratefully received.

The 500GB model is a much better value. As you've stated, you could add more HDD capacity when the prices come down.

No, TM cannot span from the current backup (internal TC HDD) to the USB HDD connected
Or do I have to choose this USB HD in Time Machine options?
Yes, you have to choose it. It also needs to be formatted HFS+ if it already isn't. You can only format the USB HDD when connected to your Mac. Disk Utility does not work on the TC HDD nor the USB HDD connect to the TC.
Are there other ways of using the attached USB HD? For example to mirror the TC, for an extra level of safety.
Yes, via AirPort Utility -> Disks -> Archive. It clones the internal HDD. It is NOT incremental.
Or could I choose within Time Machine to backup only to this USB drive?
No, TM cannot backup a NAS (i.e. the USB HDD connected to the TC).
Or could you use it as an additional Hard Drive that is nothing to do with Time Machine backups at all, just an extra HD accessed wirelessly?
    Yes.

    Yes.

Lots of good questions. You are right that the info isn't in the manual.
