Utl_file output converted from database characterset

I have a developer that is sending output to a file using utl_file. Here is a snippet of his code:
fileHand UTL_FILE.file_type;
buffer VARCHAR2(1000);
UTL_FILE.put_raw(fileHand, UTL_RAW.cast_to_raw(buffer), TRUE);
In the database there is data such as:
Stéphanie Chéry
but in the output file it is written as:
Stéphanie Chéry
basically it is being converted to WE characterset.
This is RDBMS 11.2.0.2 64bit running on RHE 5. The linux user account executing the proc that generates the output file has NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8 in it's environment. We don't understand why the characterset is being converted. he has tried using the NCHAR functions of UTL_FILE and still gets the same results.
Any idea what our issue is?

  • How to convert an output retrieved from database to an excel sheet?

    Hello friends,
    I am preparing an online JSP based project for our training and placement department.
    In this context, I am showing an output into a JTable format to the user for the shortlisted candidates by retrieving this information from my database (MySQL).
    Now I need to convert this output into the Excel Sheet so that I can perform various operations over there.
    So, what are the things required to perform from my side for implementing the same.

    The easiest thing for you to do would be to save it as CSV (Comma Separated Values). In general, your fields would be separated by commas, and any fields that are not numbers would be surrounded with double quotes:
    1,"text",...
    Dates and times are semi-tricky, but excel is pretty good about accepting "YYYY/MM/DD" and "HH:MI AM" format.
    Other than that, you'll be learning the internal structures of Excel or perhaps there is a third-party library that can do this for you...

  • Database Characterset Conversion from AMERICAN to JAPANESE

    Hello
    We are creating a test environment from a database with NLS_LANG = AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1. This needs to be converted into Japanese characterset with NLS_LANG = JAPANESE_JAPAN.JA16EUC
    As per my understanding, I need to first export the database, then create a new database with Japanese NLS_LANG, and then re-import it
    Could someone please confirm the steps please
    1. Do I need to change NLS_LANG before exporting the database?
    2. Can I run a database characterset conversion check before exporting db?
    3. Is there any other pre-cautions that I need to take

    Hello,
    I have used the Character Set Scan utility (csscan) Version 1.2. I have attached the report results below.
    To convert the character set instead of export/import, can I simply do
    ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET ja16euc;
    I would appreciate feedback on this if anyone has worked on this conversion before.

  • How can I convert a Database Handle from TestStand to LabVIEW?

    I want to use a Database Handle (already created in TestStand by an Open Database step) in a LabVIEW-VI (called from TestStand) to connect it with the "Connection Reference" input of the "Easy SQL.vi"? If I use a directly connection via the "TestStand - Get Property Value (Number).vi" I get back the error message 4101 in LabVIEW. How can I convert the Database Handle?
    Test Engineering
    digades GmbH
    www.digades.com

    The TestStand database step types use the CVI SQL Toolkit to talk to databases. The handle that you are referencing is an internal memory location and not a actual handle that you can directly use. Currently as implemented the handle that is stored in a numeric TestStand property for the connection and the SQL statement are the handle values returned from the CVI SQL Toolkit. So for the connection handle, you could call the CVI SQL Toolkit function
    DBGetConnectionAttribute (
    int Connection_Handle,
    tDBConnectionAttr Attribute,
    void *Value);
    and get the CVI CAObjHandle reference. With this you could then call the CVI ActiveX function
    CA_GetInterfaceFromObjHandle(
    CAObjHandle Object_Handle,
    const IID *Interface_Id,
    int Force_AddRef,
    void *Inte
    rface_Ptr,
    int *Did_AddRef);
    to get the actual ActiveX interface reference. This would have to be converted into a LabVIEW reference.
    You may want to consider just using LabVIEW to open a new parallel reference only using the toolkit.

  • Problem Converting standby database from snapshot to physical

    Any help willl be greatly appreciated...
    I am trying to convert a standby database that is in "snapshot" mode back to "physical" standby and I am encountering problems in the process from the "DGMGRL" command line.
    Both instances are on the same physical machine. Everything was working fine untill I tried to change the db from snapshot to physical. The DGMGRL starts the conversion process and is able to shutdown but when trying to restart the instance is fails and reports that the service is not defined.

    So, here is the status now....with a little background...
    After my original post, I started to read the manuals and I found the sql command to convert the database back from snapshot to physical standby (sb).
    That worked fine and I had my snapshot sb back to physical sb.
    So when you posted the suggestion, I already had my db in physical sb mode. I said no problem, I will convert it back to snapshot and then back again using dgmgrl instead of sql+
    Well here is how my listener is configured now.
    SID_LIST_I11G1 =
    (SID_LIST =
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = I11G1.MHOST)
    (ORACLE_HOME = c:\app\mmj\product\11.1.0\db_1)
    (SID_NAME = I11G1)
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = I11G1SB.MHOST)
    (ORACLE_HOME = c:\app\mmj\product\11.1.0\db_1)
    (SID_NAME = I11G1SB)
    (SID_DESC =
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME = I11G1SB_DGMGRL)
    (ORACLE_HOME = c:\app\mmj\product\11.1.0\db_1)
    (SID_NAME = I11G1SB)
    Then using dgmgrl I tried to change the db from p-sb to s-sb and the results are not good....

    Not sure if the following (notice the typo in the service name) in the parameter (log_archive_dest_2) definition on the standby d/b has anything to do with this. I did not get this error when I initially converted to s-sb.
    also I checked all my session notes, I did not type the command to set this parameter on the standby d/b and so it was not a typo on my part. However, it seems to have come from the rman script supplied with the obe. This script is supposed to clone the primary d/b to a standby db and in the process replace the string /i11g1/ with /i11g1sb/.

    I am tempted to start all over again, but I'd rather use this opportunity to debug this issue (as a learning exercise). I can always start from scratch. That brings up another Q: What do I need to do to blow away all traces of the stand by database (including all the archive logs etc...) keeping my primary intact. I'd also like to blow away all snapshot and archive logs for the primary as well.

  • Problem in Database convertion from US7ASCII to UTF8

    Hi,
    We are facing the following problem while converting the database from US7ASCII to UTF8:
    We have recently changed the database character set from US7ASCII to UTF8 for the internationalization
    purpose. We ran the Character set scanner utility and it did report that some data may pose problems.
    We followed the the below mentioned process to convert into UTF8 -
    1) alter database character set utf8
    2) alter database national character set utf8.
    Now we find some problem while working with the old data in our application which is java based.
    We are getting the following error "java.sql.SQLException: Fail to convert between UTF8 and UCS2: failUTF8Conv".
    We further analyzed our data and found some interesting things :
    e.g.
    DB - UTF8.
    NL_LANG also set to UTF8.
    Select name from t1 where name like 'Gen%';
    NAME
    Genhve
    But when we find out the length of the same data it show like this
    NAME LENGTH(NAME) VSIZE(NAME)
    Genhve 4 6
    The question is why is it showing length as 4 only and when we try to use a substr function
    its extracting like the following :-
    select name,substr(name,4,1) from t1 where name like 'Gen%';
    NAME SUB
    Genhve hve
    We have execute the above queries on US7ASCII DB and it is working fine, length it shows 6
    and using SUBSTR it extracts just 'h' as well.
    We also used dump function on the UTF8 Db for the above query,,this is the result :-
    select name,length(name),vsize(name),dump(name) from t1 where name like 'Gen%';
    NAME LENGTH(NAME) VSIZE(NAME) DUMP(NAME)
    Genhve 4 6 Typ=1 Len=6: 71,101,110,232,118,101
    We checked a lot with the data and it seems 'h' (accented e) is posing the problem.
    We want to know where is the problem and how to overcome this.
    Further, we tried all of the following :
    1)
    Export Server: US7ASCII
    Export Client: did not set NLS_LANG / NLS_CHAR, so presumably US7ASCII as well
    Import Client: did not set NLS_LANG / NLS_CHAR, so presumably US7ASCII as well
    Import Server: UTF8
    RESULT: Acute e became h
    2)
    Export Server: US7ASCII
    Export Client: did not set NLS_LANG / NLS_CHAR, so presumably US7ASCII as well
    Import Client: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and NLS_CHAR=UTF8
    Import Server: UTF8
    RESULT: IMP 00016 error
    3)
    Export Server: US7ASCII
    Export Client: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and NLS_CHAR=UTF8
    Import Client: did not set NLS_LANG / NLS_CHAR, so presumably US7ASCII as well
    Import Server: UTF8
    RESULT: Acute E became h
    4)
    Export Server: US7ASCII
    Export Client: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and NLS_CHAR=UTF8
    Import Client: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8 and NLS_CHAR=UTF8
    Import Server: UTF8
    RESULT: Acute e became h
    5)
    Tried using Update sys.props$
    set value$='UTF8'
    where name='NLS_CHARACTERSET'
    RESULT: Acute e shows properly but it gives problem in the application
    "java.sql.SQLException: Fail to convert between UTF8 and UCS2: failUTF8Conv"
    Looking further it was observed the following:
    when you try this command on a column 'city' in a table which contains 'Genhva' (note the acute e after n), it shows
    command: select length(city), vsize(city),substr(city,4,1),city from cities
    Result: 4 6 hva Genhva
    if you see the value of substr(city,4,1) , you will see the problem. Also note that the length shows 4 and size shows 6. Moreover, when these records are selected through JDBC Driver, it starts giving problems.
    6)
    Actually the above (point no. 5) is similar to changing the character set of the database with 'ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET UTF8'. Same problem is observed then too.
    7)
    We have also tried to with another method, that is by changing the third byte of the export file which specifies the character set, to the UTF8 code by editing the export file with a Hexdecimal editor. After import the same problem has been observed as defined in (5) and (6) above.
    We have no more ideas how to migrate without corrupting the data. Of course we have known the records where these characters occur through the Oracle's cssacn utility but we do not want to manually rectify each and every record by replacing it with an ASCII character. Any other idea as to how this can be accomplised?
    Thanx
    Ashok

    The problem you have is that although your original database is defined as US7ASCII, the data it contains is more than is covered by this code page (as the reply on Sept 4 to the previous posting already said).
    This has probably happened because the client was also defined as US7ASCII, and when the DB and client are defined as having the same character set no conversion (or checdking) takes place when data is passed between them. However if you are using a Windows client then it will in fact be using Windows code page 1252 (Latin-1) or similar, and this allows many more characters, including h (accented e). So a user can enter all these characters and store them in the database, and similarly read them from the database, because data transfer is transparent.
    When you did ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET UTF8 this will only change the label on the database, but not affect the contents. However only part of the contents are valid UTF8, any character above 7F (like h) is invalid. If your original client now uses the database, code page transformation will take place because the client and DB have different character sets defined. The invalid codes can then cause problems.
    Without being able to explain what has happened in detail, it may help to see what your h (dec 232, x'E8') looks like. The actual data has not changed (you can see this as it is reported as 232). However the binary code there (11101000) is invalid UTF8. UTF8 encodes a character in 1 to 4 bytes, and the first bits in a UTF8 character tell how many bytes it uses. 0xxx tell it is one byte (same as the corresponding USASCII character), 110x that it uses 2 bytes, 1110 that it uses 3 bytes etc. So if you interpret what is there as UTF8 it looks like the first byte of a 3-byte character, which explains why the substringing is giving you the other 2 bytes as well.
    Can you fix this without losing data? I believe yes. First you should check what other characters are being flagged by the scan. See if these are contained in another standard character set. If they are only Western European accentet characters then WE8ISO8859P1 is probably ok, but watch out for the euro sign which Windows has at x'80', an undefined character in ISO8859-1.
    You can see the contents of the Microsoft Windows Codepage 1252 at: http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/reference/sbcs/1252.htm
    For a listing of the US-ASCII defined characters see http://czyborra.com/charsets/iso646.html and for ISO 8859-1 see http://czyborra.com/charsets/iso8859.html#ISO-8859-1
    If all is well, you can first ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET to WE8ISO8859P1. This will not change any data, but ensure that all the data gets exported. Then export the DB and import it to a UTF8 DB. This will convert the non-US-ASCII characters to Unicode. You will also have to change the clients character set to something other than USASCII or they will just see ? for the other characters.
    Good Luck!

  • Database Variant to data not working when converted from LV 2010 to 9

    Hi all,
    I have a simple code which i made in LV 2010 for displaying data from an MS access sheet into an array in which i used the DATABASE VARIANT TO DATA tool. But when i converted this file into an LV 9 VI and opened it in another computer running with LV 9 , the wires connecting the data terminal of SELECT DATA tool and DATABASE VARIANT TO DATA tool are broken. Error message is Type 1 is 2d array and type 2 is void. Opening the same converted file in LV 2010 doesn't give any error and is running fine.Can anyone please tell me what should i do to rectify this problem.
    Regards,

  • Converting a Database from Windows 2003 Server to HP-UX Itanium

    Hi
    I have to convert a database Oracle11g (11.1.0.6.0) from Windows 2003 Server to HP-UX Itanium. Both installation are in the same version. I know there are methods to convert it with RMAN ( Restore/Recover converting the database files ) or with transportable tablespaces. Can you give advices or comment me your experiencies on it ?.
    Thanks

    The RMAN's convert command is going to be needed if the endian format of both the o/s is not same. I didn't check this so please check that whether the source and target are on the same endian or not. If not, you must use the RMAN. If yes, then using transport tablespace would do the job.

  • Hello, How do I tell sql+ to spool output file from windows to Unix server?

    Hello, How do I tell sql+ to spool output file from windows to Unix server?
    I am new to SQL+ and just learned how to spool the file. But file is saved in my local windows enviroment and since it's 2GB in size...I want to spool it directly to another remote unix server.
    Pls answer in detail... I have been to most of the thread and didn't see relevant answer to above question.
    Am I suppose to develope some script which FTP the spool file directly to the server I want to
    or
    i Have to use UTL_FILE Package ?
    Thanks for reply

    You may not be able to...
    SQL*Plus can only spool to the local machine. If you have mapped a directory on the Unix server from your Windows machine, you can specify that directory in your SPOOL command.
    You could telnet to the Unix server, run SQL*Plus there, and spool the file to a local (Unix) directory.
    If the Unix server is also the Oracle database server, you could use the UTL_FILE package rather than using SQL*Plus to spool a file.
    If the Unix server is also an FTP server, you could also FTP the file from your local machine to the server.
    Of course, I would tend to re-examine a requirement to regularly generate a 2 GB text file. It seems likely that there is a better way...

  • Programmatically generate password for pdf with data from database

    Good day everyone,
      I would like to know is it possible to programmatically generate passwords for pdf??
    The main idea is to enable an automated process of pdf acquiring individualised password from a database (Excel, Access, you name it) and finally sending the pdf to individual recipient. Can I use javascript for this? And if yes, how?? If not, pls do advice me on the appropriate steps.
    Background (for clarity's sake):
      Currently I am working on developing an automated process for the sending customised, password encrypted payslip to about 80 staff. The entire procedure is pretty much summarized as below:
    mail merg (UBS output in) excel to words -> convert words to pdf -> programmatically password encrypt the pdf -> email to individual recipients.
    Well my current status is - I am quite done with the batch mail merge and convertion part. And batch proccessing of password encryption is not a problem, but the idea is to allow acrobat to retrieve password automatically from a database and not key-in each and every password manually. The batch email for now is another problem but for now I have to work stepwise. (Any ideas on how to do it would equally be valued though! =D)
    System and software using:
    Windows  XP and 7 Professional
    Microsoft Office Proffesional 2010
    Adobe Acrobat X Pro
    I would be really grateful for any relevant replies to my question and any additional thoughts or ideas are welcome!!
    I would to thank any potential saviour in advance!
    Thank you for helping!

    Basically I need to automate the password generation from database extract
    e.g. Excel database with StaffID, StaffName, PayMonth, etc. Then when the pdf is created, its password would be <StaffID>_<PayMonth> which is extracted from excel.
    Is it possible for this to happen?? I dont mine using Javascript, I'll just have to learn it.
    Or how about recommending a program which does that??
    Whichever is fine as long there's a solution!
    Thanks!

  • Convert from oracle to access

    Dear all,
    Is there any tool to convert from oracle to access?
    Thanks for advance !
    chara

    I will describe two ways here.
    1) By toad
    Toad outputs the result in a grid. You can save it as csv file and then can import in access database.
    2) By sql* plus spooling
    SQL> set heading off
    SQL> spool dept.txt
    SQL> select 'Dept Number,Dept Name,Location' from dual
    2 union all
    3 select deptno||','||dname||','||loc from dept;
    SQL> spool off
    Now you got dept.txt as csv file. Import this file in access database.

  • How to get a 38 character length number from database /NUMBER(38, 0)/?

    I need to store in a database number that is 38 character long, that works fine for me but when I am reading from database using JDBC driver my number I get not that I have putted into database i. e.:
    inserted to database: 34028236692093846346337460743176821145
    result of reading from database via JDBC driver: 34028236692093800000000000000000000000 (return type is BigDecimal... :/ and I would expect BigInteger...)
    my db version is Oracle 10.2.0.4.0 Enterprise Edition
    and JDBC driver version is 10.2.0.4.0

    no, num.doubleValue() is not exact enough (can lead to different numbers after the decimal point). the only way i have found so far to convert exactly is to use the String constructor of BigDecimal.
    the starnge thing is, that the same value as a fixed string works, but not the string value:
        public static BigDecimal toBigDecimal(String string, String pattern) {
            BigDecimal result = null;
            if (string != null) {
                java.text.DecimalFormat df = new java.text.DecimalFormat(pattern);
                Number num = df.parse(string, new java.text.ParsePosition(0));
                if (num != null) {
                    try {
                        string = string.replace(',', '.');
                        System.out.println("1: "+new BigDecimal("12.34"));
                        System.out.println("2: "+new BigDecimal(string)); //thorws NumberFormatException, even though string has the value "12.34" (checked with debugger)
                        result = new BigDecimal(string);
                    } catch (NumberFormatException nfe) {
                        System.err.println("toBigDecimal():"+ nfe);
            return result;
        }//toBigDecimal()output:
    1: 12.34
    toBigDecimal():java.lang.NumberFormatException: 1234
    where is the decimal point? the debugger shows that 'string' has the value "12.34" (with decimal point)????
