Value binding doesn't invoke functions in dataTable

I have been fighting with this problem for few days now...
It seems like value="#{bean.items}" isn't invoked. Just because it isn't. I am not getting any errors, exception, nothing.
Code looks just like that:
<h:dataTable id="ingredientsTableForPharmacyKind"  value="#{drughandler.drug.ingredientsList}" var="ingredient">
                    <%-- NAME --%>
                    <h:column>
                        <f:facet name="header">
                            <h:outputText id="ingredientNamePrompt" value="#{msgs.menuDrugFormIngredientNAME}"/>
                        </f:facet>
                        <h:outputText id="ingredientNameOutput" value="#{ingredient.ingredient_name}"/>
                    </h:column>
                    <%-- QUANTITY --%>
                    <h:column>
                        <f:facet name="header">
                            <h:outputText id="ingredientQuantityPrompt" value="#{msgs.menuDrugFormIngredientQUANTITY}"/>
                        </f:facet>
                        <h:outputText id="ingredientQuantityOutput" value="#{ingredient.quantity}"/>
                    </h:column>
                    <%-- UNIT --%>
                    <h:column>
                        <f:facet name="header">
                            <h:outputText id="ingredientUnitPrompt" value="#{msgs.menuDrugFormUnit}"/>
                        </f:facet>
                        <h:outputText id="ingredientUnitOutput" value="#{ingredient.unit.name}"/>
                    </h:column>
                    <%-- DESCRIPTION --%>
                    <h:column>
                        <f:facet name="header">
                            <h:outputText id="ingredientDescriptionPrompt" value="#{msgs.menuDrugFormIngredientDESC}"/>
                        </f:facet>
                        <h:outputText id="ingredientDescriptionOutput" value="#{ingredient.description}"/>
                    </h:column>
                    <%-- EFFECT --%>
                    <h:column>
                        <f:facet name="header">
                            <h:outputText id="ingredientEffectPrompt" value="#{msgs.menuDrugFormIngredientEFFECT}"/>
                        </f:facet>
                        <h:outputText id="ingredientEffectOutput" value="#{ingredient.effect}"/>
                    </h:column>
                </h:dataTable>
drughandler bean contains attribute drug, which is a bean. DrugBean method ingredientsList returns LinkedList of ingredients.
Problem is that everything is rendered except values from ingredientList ( I have second funciton which returns an Array of ingredients, it doesn't work either). Facets are rendered correctly. There is one but. value="#{drughandler.drug.ingredientsList}" Is never invoked. I have even put System.out.println(); into that function to check if its invoked, nothing was shown on the console...
What is wrong?? Everything on this specific page works fine....

My bad, I got a little foggy. Ofcourse each bean has getter and setter methods. DrugBeans getIngredientsList and getIngredientsArray of DrugHandler bean methods aren't invoked in this particular code snippet.
I have also noticed smoething like this in the AS console
WARNING: [ComponentRule]{faces-config/component} Merge(com.mycompany.TabLabel)
2005-12-01 07:48:12 com.sun.faces.config.rules.ComponentRule end

I think it's present when code regarding dataTable is uncommented.

  • Can I use a inputHidden for javascript values that doesn't set the value?

    I have a hiddenInput field for each row in a datatable so I can restore default values to a date field with a javascript function. I am getting conversion errors because I don't have the right setters in the backing object - and I really don't want to put them there - but I don't want the tag to set the values! Is there any way to just set a hidden value somewhere for each row of a datatable but not have it try to set the value? Thanks in advance!

    I just realised that won't work because all the HTML tags will have the same name, whereas I need the dynamically generated suffix that a dataTable assigns to every element in the row i.e. '_id34', so I can reference the value in the javascript and compare it to entered values. Any more ideas? I am having huge memory problems when I'm submitting my form too, using up 2GB of mem and then dying! I'm not sure what's causing it, because it doesn't get as far as my action method code before it dies! It works for smaller tables but I need to be able to handle ~20 users with tables 4x the size I can process now without running out of memory :( Any help would be really really appreciated!!

  • VOIMPL setter method doesn't invoke on clearing text

    If we set some value to a text field , invoking VOIMPL setter method for the corresponding text field  works fine , on clearing the text it  doesn't invoke the same setter method (in effect ,previous value is exist behind the scenes)
    what could be the reason ??

  • The value returned from the load function is not of type numeric  errors after migration to Coldfusion 11

    I am currently testing our website with CF11. It is currently working with CF8 however after migrating it to a new server running CF11 I have encountered the following error.

    Have there been any changes between CF8 and CF11 that could  cause this error?
    Does anyone have ideas?

  • Using value binding expressions to set 'required' attribute

    I am trying to use a value binding expression to determine whether the value of various input control's is required or not according to where they are used and not having much luck. I wonder if anyone can shed some light on this...
    The following expression works: <h:inputText id="name" required="#{true}"/> whereas <c:set var="required" value="true" scope="request"/>
    <h:inputText id="name" required="#{required}"/> does not, even though the expression evaluates to true! I have tried numerous variations (requestScope.required, required == true, required ? true : false, etc.) to no avail. Interestingly, #{1 == 1} or binding to a backing bean method works, but as soon as you add a request variable it breaks.
    Am I doing something wrong, is this something that JSF doesn't allow, or just a bug in the RI? Note that I don't want to vary this flag between multiple submissions of the same form, I am just trying to reuse the same JSP include to generate form controls for required and optional data on different forms to avoid a whole lot of cutting any pasting.
    Any pointers gratefully received.
    -- Keith Wilson

    I had something like this happen, and here's what I concluded the problem was. Perhaps your problem is similar.
    In the first non-working example you show a request-scope variable being set in the JSP page, and then use that to set the "required" attribute. But consider what happens when you submit the form. There is no longer any request-scope variable set because we have a new request and we don't go through the JSP page! (Not before validation is checked, anyhow).
    So basically I concluded that the variable had to be in (say) session scope for it to work as you would like.

  • Dynamic value binding for InputTextField - Expression within an expression

    Hi,
    I have this requirement where I have to use an EL expression's output as a bean's property in the value attribute of a InputTextField. E.g.
              <h:dataTable value="#{entity.formats}" var="field">
                   <h:column>
                        <h:outputLabel value="#{field.shortDesr}"/>
                   </h:column>
                   <h:column>
                        <h:inputText value="#{*entity."+#{field.shortDesr}+*"}"/>
                   </h:column>
              </h:dataTable>
    The JSF page will be a generic one so the fields within a form will be dynamic and will be formed at run-time. Since the exact bean property(entity in the code above) for a particular field is not known before, it needs to be dynamicaly built
    To give more clarity. In the following snippet, i know that entity is the bean to be used but which property(XXX) the text field has to be bound is not known and needs to be assigned at run-time.
    <h:inputText value="#{entity.*XXX*"/>
    Is this possible? Are there any direct JSF solution or work arounds for it? Appreciate your inputs.
    Thanks
    Ranjith

A: Dynamic value binding for InputTextField - Expression within an expression

Hi BaluSC,
Your solution is totally acceptable. But I was also looking for something that can make possible direct binding to the bean properties without going through a Map.
In the meantime, I worked around the problem by not using the DataTable. Instead I loop the collection and add the Form elements programatically (code given below). With this I am able to achieve the desired effect of binding directly to the bean's property. But I am hitting another problem now, On submit the form Seam throws up 'No active conversational context" error while binding the #{sdmManager.grid} attribute. Now, I am trying to figure out how to come across it.
JSF
     <h:panelGrid columns="2" binding="#{sdmManager.grid}">
</h:panelGrid>
Bean code
     public HtmlPanelGrid getGrid(){
     grid = new HtmlPanelGrid();
     List<UIComponent> children = grid.getChildren();
     Collection<FieldFormatData> formats = dataManager.getFieldFormatData();
     for(FieldFormatData format:formats){
          HtmlOutputLabel outputLabel = new HtmlOutputLabel();
          outputLabel.setValue(format.getShortDesr());
          children.add(outputLabel);
          HtmlInputText inputText = new HtmlInputText();
          inputText.setSize(10);
          inputText.setMaxlength(10);
          System.out.println("Binding ................................... " + format.getEntityField());
          inputText.setValueBinding("value", FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getApplication().createValueBinding("#{entity."+format.getEntityField()+"}"));
          children.add(inputText);
     return grid;

  • Value binding for to-view-id ?????

    is it allowed to use value-binding for the "to-view-id" component in a navigation case in faces-config.xml ?
    if yes, how ? i tried, it doesn't work !
    example : <to-view-id>#{myBean.chosenURL}</to-view-id>
    thx,
    dom.

    Hi,
    I don't think this works because the navigation case expects a string. Here's the NavigationHandler code
    private CaseStruct getViewId(FacesContext context, String fromAction,
    String outcome) {
    String nextViewId = null;
    String viewId = context.getViewRoot().getViewId();
    CaseStruct caseStruct = null;
    synchronized (this) {
    caseStruct = findExactMatch(viewId, fromAction, outcome);
    if (caseStruct == null) {
    caseStruct = findWildCardMatch(viewId, fromAction, outcome);
    if (caseStruct == null) {
    caseStruct = findDefaultMatch(fromAction, outcome);
    return caseStruct;

  • Exception handling within a value-binding expression

    Hi all,
    Forgive me if this question seems odd, but I am a long-time Struts developer, new to JSF.
    In Struts, exception handling was easy because all requests were funnelled through some subclass of Action. Exception handling could effectively be consolidated into one spot by applying the template-method pattern.
    Of course, with JSF, this is not possible because method names in value-binding and action-binding expressions can be chosen arbitrarily. For this reason, I am exploring aspect-oriented (and other) techniques for consolidation JSF exception handling into one spot, but rather than focus too intently on that, it's clear that I first need the ability to forward to an error page when an exception is encountered in a value-binding or action-binding expression.
    For action-binding expressions, ExternalContext.dispatch("<view id>"); seems to work quite well, but I am unable to make the same work when in the context of a value-binding expression. This is probably attributed to the fact that at that point, I am in an entirely different phase of the JSF request processing lifecycle.
    What I'm looking to know is if anyone has a reliable means of forwarding to an error page within the context of a value-binding expression. Better yet, does anyone know a reliable way of forwarding to another view regardless of what phase you are in?
    If it makes a difference (and I think it does) the error page uses JSF as well, and uses the same layout (provided via custom tags courtesy of JSP 2.0 tag files), so some view components would have the same name as the page which encountered the error. This seems to get in the way of me simply defining the error page for a 500 in my web deployment descriptor.
    Thanks in advance to anyone with a working suggestion.
    -Kent

    Let me pose a purely hypothetical use case to demonstrate the problem:
    Imagine a page in an HR app, employeeDetails.jsp, that displays an always-up-to-date combo box which lists employee names and IDs. onChange triggers a form submit with the intention of simply posting back to this page, with various text boxes, etc. below updated to show all information for the selected employee.
    Obviously, with the requirement that the combo box always be up to date, it's clear that the getter invoked by the value-binding expression must access the database (not directly of course, but via a facade, application, then data-access layer). Any unexpected and unchecked exception in this chain would propagate back up to the getter method on the backing bean. I need to, at that point, log the exception (trivial) and forward to a user-friendly error page.
    I suppose I could put some contraint on myself that data access is only performed within ActionEvent handlers, but I'm not sure that's consistent with the JSF model in general, in fact it almost seems Struts-like in that I'd have to invoke some action before loading this form to build the up-to-date list for the combo box, shove it in request scope, where it's then available to the page indicated by the navigation rules. Submission of the form on the page in question would also need to result in rebuilding the up-to-date list. Now we're looking at firther propagation of code. I want to avoid this, so I am looking for a better way.

  • How to find out default value of parameter in stored function???

    Hi,
    is there any kind (metadat) how to get default value of parameter of stored function???
    thx

    that's where it's supposed to be, but it doesn't seem to work correctly. I checked on 9 & 10, and the DEFAULT_VALUE column is always null on both. in fact, the underlying column (sys.argument$.default$) is also always null.

  • Pass a value from a PL/SQL function to a javascript (html header) ? ?

    Hey Guys,
    Have a question regarding how to pass a value from a PL/SQL function to a javascript in the HTML Header.
    I have created a PL/SQL function in my database, which does looping.
    The reason for this is:  On my apex page when the user selects a code, it should display(or highlight buttons) the different project id's present for that particular code.
    example= code 1
    has project id's = 5, 6, 7
    code 2
    has project id's = 7,8
    Thank you for your Help or Suggestions

    Jesh:
    I have made the following modifications to your app to get it to work as I thing you need it to.
    1) Changed the source for the HTML Buttons Region(note use of id vs name for the Buttons)
    <script>
    function hilitebtn(val) {
    //gray buttons
    $x('graduate').style.backgroundColor='gray'
    $x('distance').style.backgroundColor='gray'
    $x('career').style.backgroundColor='gray'
    $x('photo').style.backgroundColor='gray'
    //AJAX call to get project-ids
    var get = new htmldb_Get(null,$x('pFlowId').value,'APPLICATION_PROCESS=GETPROJECTS',0);
    get.addParam('x01',val)
    gReturn = get.get();
    var arr=gReturn.split(':');  //dump into array
    get = null;
    for (i=0;i<arr.length;i++) {
    // alert('val=' + arr);
    if ( arr[i]==5)
    $x('graduate').style.backgroundColor='red';
    if ( arr[i]==6)
    $x('distance').style.backgroundColor='red';
    if ( arr[i]==7)
    $x('career').style.backgroundColor='red';
    if ( arr[i]==8)
    $x('photo').style.backgroundColor='red';
    </script>
    <table cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' border='0'>
    <tr><td>
    <input type='button' id='graduate' value='Graduate'>
    </td>
    <td>
    <input type='button' id='distance' value='Distance'>
    </td>
    <td>
    <input type='button' id='career' value='Career/Tech'>
    </td>
    <td>
    <input type='button' id='photo' value='Photos'>
    </td>
    </tr></table>
    2) Defined the application process  GETPROJECTS as DECLARE
    IDS varchar2(1000);
    l_act_code varchar2(100) :=4;
    begin
    IDS:='';
    l_act_code := wwv_flow.g_x01;
    for x in(
    SELECT ACT_CODE,PROJECT_ID
    FROM ASQ_CONTACT
    where ACT_CODE = l_act_code)
    LOOP
    IDS := IDS || X.PROJECT_ID|| ':' ;
    END LOOP;
    HTP.PRN(IDS);
    END;
    3) Changed the 'onchange' event-handler on p1_act_code to be 'onchange=hilitebtn(this.value)'
    4) Added the JS to the HTML Page Footer <script>
    hilitebtn($v('P1_ACT_CODE'));
    </SCRIPT>

  • How to declare value binding to array list element in a pojo?

    I have a POJO called P, that contains an ArrayList member called w.
    class P {
    private ArrayList w = new ArrayList(5);
    w is initied in the class constructor.
    The POJO is in the SessionBean and I would like to reference individual
    elements in the ArrayList via a value binding like so;
    #{SessionBean1.instanceOfP.w[5]}
    I'm not sure how to declare the getter/setter for member W in POJO P
    so that setter and getter injection work.

    You may not be able to directly set the indexed value.
    Try some thing like this.
    Add a property that returns the indexed value.
    Ex. if you ArrayList objets are of type "String"
    int index = 5;
    public String getMyValue(){
    return w.get[index]
    Now your value binding would look something like
    #{SessionBean1.myValue}
    BTW, if you want to access different index, create another method
    public void setIndex(int index){
    this.index = index;

    Hi,
    Using the exact same wsdl i was able to get a response from the HTTP service using OSB. I created a business service targeting this wsdl. Then created a proxy service to route the xml to the business service.
    I was able to successfully invoke and get response from the HTTP service without making any change to the wsdl.
    Could this be a bug in BPEL PM? Should I raise an SR?

  • Binding to a javascript function is not working

    I am trying to use the following code to bind to a javascript
    function and it's not working. I finally had to use jQuery to bind
    the event handler, but I would like to see the CF generated stuff
    work. Am I missing something here?
    This jquery code is the workaround:
    $('.match').change(function(){
    updateSA(this);

    Binding is not restricted to flash forms. I can bind directly
    to a cfc without problems, but in this case I need to send more
    info to the cfc than a single field would provide. You're supposed
    to be able to bind to a javascript function using the syntax above,
    but it's not working properly.
