so why didn't you seach for 'extend' in the pl/sql language doc and answer your own question?

I need to be able to reference :l_ret_sts in the begin block using the if statement "if :l_ret_sts > 0 then"
:l_ret_sts is populated in a procedure call beforehand.
However it seems as though the begin block cannot reference the value returned to :l_ret_sts.
Any ideas.

Managed to solve this. I put my call to the package that the role enables via dynamic sql....

How to Print the Value of a variable inside a PL/SQL package

Hi Friends,
Here is my Scenario
I have a PL/SQL Package. Let us call it Baseline Package.
This Package includes a dynamically built merge Statement.
Execute Immediate v_merge_query.
I have a procedure which replaces which few Keywords from the Package Text and Creates a new one depending on Inputs I provide. (This is something like a Code generator)
Now while Creating the new package, I need to print the Value of v_merge_query.... I Need s Static Query to be Printed inside the new package and not a dynamic query.
My Question is "Is there a way to print the value of the variable inside a different PL/SQL package?

Print where?
That PL/SQL code is server-side code. It runs in an Oracle server process.
That server process does not have a keyboard. Or a screen/monitor. Or display canvas. Or an attached printer.
That server process is incapable of "printing" as that is not its job or responsibility and not part of its environment.
What is can do is record data for the client to look at afterwards. This can be done using static PL/SQL session variables. Or a SQL table.
The former is done by DBMS_OUTPUT - a very primitive interface for writing text into a static PL/SQL string array. That btw resides in expensive private process server memory. The client can query the array after a database call and render the contents.
PS. Also keep in mind that bind variables are critical for performance and server robustness - especially when (ab)using dynamic SQL.

Storing the contents of a substitution or bind variable in a PL/SQL var

Hi,
I would like to create a substitution or bind variable to store the name of a sequence to use in SQLPlus and then reference this in a PL/SQL procedure and assign the contents of the substitution or bind variable in the PL/SQL variable. Is this possible?

A substitution variable can only be used in an anonyomous PL/SQL block, not a stored procedure. You would pass the sequence name in via an input parameter to that stored proc.
In an anonymous block though:

Using collections / Bind variables with a PL/SQL functio returning a query

I have this code, which is supposed to assign collection variables as column names

Ok so working through this problem more I have realized that the problem is using the for loop i as an index value

Is it possible to retrieve RAD's extended variables with a pl/sql function?

Good morning everyone,
We have our forms and reports(10g) application, SSO enabled and we are using OID on 10g app server. some of our users use smart card to log in to the system and some who do not have smart cards provide their database userid, password and SID.
In the case of users who login with smart card, as a one time effort, they have to register their smart card. At that point OID presents a form prompting for their username, password, sid and then a RAD record is created for that particular user.
And from then on when the user enters the system using his smart card(12345@mil), forms servlet, does the look up of dbusername,dbpswd,sid which belong to the 12345@mil and user's database credentials are passed to the application. The entire application logic is based on that userid which is also an internal userid in the application. Everything is working fine.
I have read the documentation and found that 12345@mil is stored in the "cn" parameter and the orclownerguid and orclusernameattribute are stored under "cn"=extended properties in the oid. I am able to see this from the oid console.
But now I need some help. If I only know the id of the user as "12345@mil" , is it possible to manually query the RAD and retrieve the orclusername from a pl/sql function?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Passing variable values to pl/sql procedures

I wanted to log the step name and message into a table whenever a particular step/interface failed in the ODI package.
Ex:PKG1
A----OK--->B----OK-->C--OK-->LOG SUCCESS status into table. All steps are sequenced.
when not OK
A----KO--->B----KO-->C--KO-->LOG failed status into table with step and message.
I have created 4 variables in ODI and used these vairables in to pass values in pl/sql procedure scenario.
I have drag and drop procedure scenario and given values to every variable...thing is for i want to get the step name dynamically for the procedure scenario's variable i am directly passing
v_int_step=odiRef.getPrevStepLog("STEP_NAME").
I dont want drag and drop procedure for each KO and then pass values to v_int_step=A or B or C .

Mistakes i found in the script,
1. You need to pass the variables with the "-<YOUR PROJECT CODE>.VARIABLE NAME" which i suppose would be in UPPER CASE.
2. You need to pass OdiPrevStepLog with <%=%> enclosed. So your script will looks like,

as previous posters said: it's not possible to do this without declaring a variable in the anonymous block.
With anonymous block it would look like this (had to change it a bit, since i'm using hr-schema on oracle XE):

Using a Variable to create the SQL Query

I need to create a "dynamic" Update query. I want to store
the meet of the command in a variable and then reference the
variable in in query.

I know its hard to see, but the '' are 2 ' not 1 " . I have
no idea why Coldfusion (or maybe the ODBC driver??) is placing the

Can anyone shed some light on this topic?
While this is a simple example, my application is far more
complex. I have over 50 fields in the udpate and depending on
changes to the form values, I may need to update all the fields,
some of the fields or NONE of the fields.
I can use <cfif> to test if any fields have changed and
if so, include them in the update command, but if NONE of the
fields have changed, I would have an empty update command and
therefore get an error. I want to avoid having to test for changes
twice (once to determine if I am doing the update and twice to
perform the update).

If I try to run it on sql server 2008 r2, the filtering part seems to be misinterpreted and the following error is thrown:
Msg 25706, Level 16, State 8, Line 1
The event attribute or predicate source, "sqlserver.sql_text", could not be found.
If I remove the where clause, the statement runs fine even though the sqlserver.sql_text is returned as part of the actions. So obviously the "sqlserver.sql_text" is existant. Why would I receive a message it does not exists in the
where clause? Was the "like_i_sql_unicode_string" inexistent in 2008 r2 or has the syntax changed in 2012. How can we filter sql_text in 2008 r2? I can't seem to find any doc regarding this, help would be appreciated.

You are on the right track:
The differences in the available events and predicates (source and compare) between SQL Server 2008/R2 and 2012 are quite substantial.
So the LIKE-operator is not available at all under 2008/R2 as a comparison-predicate, and sql_text is also not available as a source-predicate - only as action itself. - One has to realize, that actions really are not automatically also predicates.
For a complete list of predicates you can query like this:

Unfortunately for your specific filter there is not workaround for Extended Events.
You would have to resort to another predicate for filtering altogether.
BUT: if you are on Enterprise Edition, why not use Auditing. There is a Audit-Group for Backup/Restore.
It would be really simple like the following:

APEX - accepting OUT variable values from PL/SQL Stored Procedure

I have created a page (Form) which is accepting values text fields.
In the Page Processing section under Processing, I am passing the values to a PL/SQL Stored Procedure, which acts like an API. The procedure contains code to validate the entered data and finally insert the data into the base tables. The procedure also contains OUT variables in the parameter that would return status of processing and any error messages.
Now, my question is, how can I make the page accept these OUT variables from the procedure. What I wish to do is, to capture these messages/processing status from the procedure in the page. For example, if there is a error in the data and the procedure is sending this message in the OUT variable, I need this to be displayed on the page as an error message.
Is this possible in APEX?

I just tried putting the string directly instead of the variable. Its still not giving me the expected results.
HOWEVER, I think the reason was because of the EXCEPTION block in my code. I have an EXCEPTION block to handle exceptions. I commented the WHEN OTHERS section and now the error message is coming on the page.
So what I have done now is as follows: At the point at which the error is expected, I am raising a handled exception. And within the exception handling, I am giving RAISE_APPLICATION_ERROR.

Unit Test Variable Substitution in PL/SQL User Vailidation code not running

I am using new Unit Test Feature in SQL Developer 2.1.0.62.
I have created a test implemented to test a function. The function has a VARCHAR2 parameter as input and returns a BINARY_INTEGER.
I would like to perform 'Process Validation instead of specifying an explicit 'Result'. The check box 'Test Result' is unchecked.
I have seen in the doc. that I can use substitution variables in my user defined PL/SQL code. I try
IF {RETURNS$} < 0
THEN ...
but I always get the error
ERROR
<RETURN> : Expected: [Any value because apply check was cleared], Received: [-103]
Validation User PL/Sql Code failed: Non supported SQL92 token at position: 181: RETURNS$
Obviously, the program doesn't recognize {RETURN$}.
Am I missing something?

Hi all,
I have installed the latest version of SQL Developer (2.1.1) that fixed the problem - must have been a bug.
The only problem was that I got an ORA-904 TEST_USER_NAME... error. I export my tests, dropped the repository, created a new one and reimported everything. Now it works as it should.

How to declare a global variable from a PL/SQL package

Using a global variable is a bad practise for all language. However, in my case, I have a PL/SQL package defines all constants, and I want to use them directly via SQL statement, for instance,
PACKAGE my_const
IS
     DEFAULT_ZIP_CODE CONSTANT VARCHAR2(5) := '00000';
END;And I cannot referrence this variable from my select statement as
SELECT my_const.DEFAULT_ZIP_CODE from dual;I have to create a function via my package, as,
FUNCTION get_default_zip_code RETURN VARCHAR2
IS
BEGIN
     RETURN DEFAULT_ZIP_CODE;
END;and
SELECT my_const.get_default_zip_code from dual;I don't want to create functions to referrence the default varaibles. Does anyone have any clues?

None of these languages can crack open the data segment of a PL code unit, inspect the variables in it, and extract a value from it. Instead, it needs to be done as follows:
Using sqlplus as the client illustrates how all these languages will need to do it:
SQL> var value varchar2(20);
SQL> begin
2>     :value := SomePackage.someVar;
3> end;
4> /So why should SQL behave differently? It is not the same as the PL language. It is not a subset of the PL language. Yeah, PL/SQL blurs the line between these 2 languages making it very simple for us to mix their source code. But PL/SQL is SQL integrated with PL - not PL integrated with SQL. PL has tight hooks into SQL, creating cursors for you, defining bind variables, binding variables and doing the whole Oracle Call Interface bit for you.
But SQL has no need for PL code, just as it has no need for Java code, or Delphi code or VB code. Yes, it is possible for it to call Java stored procs. As it is possible for it to call PL procs. But these are via the formal call interface of those languages - not via tight integration hooks that blur the languages and make SQL and Java, or SQL and PL, look like a single integrated source code unit.
Thus SQL has the pretty much the same constraints in calling the PL language as other languages do. What SQL can do is use the PL engine's call interface and tell it "+execute this function and return the result of the function+".
