Variable length declaration in string type

hi all
can anyone tell me how to declare length for string type of variables

Hi,
The length of a string is not static but variable and adjusts itself to the current field content at runtime. Dynamic memory management is used internally. Strings can have any length. The initial value of a string is an empty string with length 0.
Hope this will make you clear. Please reward if answer satisfy you !!!

i have to implement a code which goes like this

how do i convert that int variable i into a String type variable??
    can anyone help me?

    Different methods:
    int a;
    string s=a+"";or
String.valueOf(int) is the better option because Int.toString() generated an intermediate object to get the endresult

  • Why string type shared variable takes more time to update in the client

I am using shared variables to share the data across a master and the client PCs connected in a network. (Network published & no buffering)
I have created an integer type shared variable(I32) and a string type shared variable (data size is 60 bytes) in the Master and subscribing to the same in the client PCs. In the master PC, I am modifying the data in this order - update the data in the string type variable and then update the data in the integer vaiable.
But in the client PCs, due to the size difference in the variables, I am receiving the data of the integer first and after that about 3-4 sec later only I am receiving the string data. Can any optimization be done to reduce this latency period? Instead of the string data type any better data type will reduce this delay?
    Please suggst. Advnced thanks.

Latency has a lot to do with your network.  3-4 seconds is a long time though.  This could also be due to the larget data size of your string.  The integer data size is definitaly not 60 bytes.  If you're looking for better performance, I would highly recommend looking into Datasocket communication or TCP/IP communication.  (There are shipping example for both.)
When it comes to performance of throughput and efficiency, network-published variables are lower on the totem pole.
    I hope this helps,

  • Problem in sending a variable length string

    Hello friends,
I have created a scenario as follows.
    Our

I am sending a record with one of the fields of the type 'VARILRAW'
When I send this, it is sending me a response that it was inserted in the table succesfully, But when I try to retrieve, all fields get returned correctly, but not this variable length field. This sends me back a huge string of letter 'A's.

  • How to save blob data (variable length string) in a customized table?

    Dear Friends
I have written a very simple program to update table with 2 fields which
    looks as follows.
    ========================================================
    Table name ZTESTBLOBDATA
Field         Key          Init    Data Element   Data Type  Length

    ztestblobdata-id  =   sy-dbcnt +1.
    ztestblobdata -blob = 'abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz.'.

Thanks a lot for the response.
The string that we are getting is from another application via netweaver XI integration and is being sent as a string which has to be saved in an SAP table. I am not sure if IDOC option will suit our needs, but will definitely read more about it.
    If there is any other suggestion of feedback I would appreciate it a lot.;

  • Log the local variables (string type) to the database (SQL Server)

i have a customized PreUUT callback so that my own VI gets the information from barcode. it contains serial number as well as other information. i am collecting the information into local variables of the PreUUT callback.
Now i want to log the local variables (string type) to the database (SQL Server).
i have a successful connection to the database and i am using a generic recordset schema.
can anyone help me how to do it?
also shall i have to create the corrosponding fields (columns) in the database? or is there any option in TestStand4.0 to do it?

    Hello i like original,
After re-reading your original message, I think I might have a better understanding of what you would like to do.  I have included a few links to Knowledge Base and Developer Zone articles that should be very useful for you.  I have included these links below:

I am using this JavaBean but I think I shouldnt be declaring String type with emply values and also instantiating the bean in the no arg constructor with null values:

                    private String lastname = "";

Instead of setting them to null in the Constructor I assume I should have nothing in it?Right. In fact, if that's the only constructor, and you don't do anything else in it, you can dispense with it entirely. If you don't write any constructors, the compiler will generate one for you: a default constructor that takes no arguments and does nothing but call super().

  • I want to increase the variable length

    Hi all,
I want to increase the variable length at runtime(When iam doing debugging).
Can any body tell me idea..

    Hi,
I dont think you can change variable length in debugging mode.
What you can do is if you variable is a character format  you can declare it as string instead of character.
You can pack -unpack with leading zeros..and many other data manuplation.
But i doubt on changing the characterstics of the variable at runtime.
Look for some alternative data type for your requirement.

  • What is the idea of having STRING type when you can't write into that field

    Hello friends
I am desperately trying to write to a field of a database table with DATA TYPE 'STRING'.
When I try to write it using a program from < SE38> or a function <SE37>, I get following error message, while activating the program.
    ============================================================
<DATABASE_TABLE> must be a flat structure. You cannot use internal tables,
strings, references, or structures as components.
    ============================================================
So, I have been going in circle to find out how to write a string into this field.
I can't use the CHAR or any such type with a limited field length, since the requirement from my customer is to use a variable length string.
Has anybody seen this problem before and if you have resolved this issue, I would appreciate if you can please let me know.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hi Harish
    Thanks for your response.
I can create the table with the data type 'String'. However, the problem is when I try to update the table from a program in SE38 or a Function Module in SE37.
When I try to activate the PROGRAM or FUCNTION, I GET A MESSAGE THAT I MENTIONED EARLIER.
Here is the simple program that I have created that I am not able to activate
    ==========================================
    REPORT  ZTEST_STRING1.
    tables: ztest.
    ztest-zid = 2.
    ztest-zstring1 = 'ABC'.
    insert ztest.
    ===========================================
    ztest has two fields
    zid which is NUMC type
and zstring1 which is STRING type.
When I try to activate I get an error message as follows:

  • SQL*Loader and "Variable length field was truncated"

    Hi,
I'm experiencing this problem using SQL*Loader: Release 8.1.7.0.0
Here is my control file (it's actually split into separate control and data files, but the result is the same)
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE *
    APPEND INTO TABLE test
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY ','
    OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"'
    first_id,
    second_id,
    third_id,
    language_code,
    display_text VARCHAR(2000)
    begindata
    2,1,1,"eng","Type of Investment Account"
The TEST table is defined as:
    Name Null? Type
    FIRST_ID NOT NULL NUMBER(4)
    SECOND_ID NOT NULL NUMBER(4)
    THIRD_ID NOT NULL NUMBER(4)
    LANGUAGE_CODE NOT NULL CHAR(3)
    DISPLAY_TEXT VARCHAR2(2000)
    QUESTION_BLOB BLOB
    The log file displays:
Record 1: Warning on table "USER"."TEST", column DISPLAY_TEXT
    Variable length field was truncated.
And the results of the insert are:
    FIRST_ID SECOND_ID THIRD_ID LANGUAGE_CODE DISPLAY_TEXT
2 1 1 eng ype of Investment Account"
The language_code field is imported correctly, but display_text keeps the closing delimiter, and loses the first character of the string. In other words, it is interpreting the enclosing double quote and/or the delimiter, and truncating the first two characters.
    I've also tried the following:
    LOAD DATA
    INFILE *
    APPEND INTO TABLE test
    FIELDS TERMINATED BY '|'
    first_id,
    second_id,
    third_id,
    language_code,
    display_text VARCHAR(2000)
    begindata
    2|1|1|eng|Type of Investment Account
In this case, display_text is imported as:
    pe of Investment Account
In the log file, I get this table which seems odd as well - why is the display_text column shown as having length 2002 when I explicitly set it to 2000?
Column Name Position Len Term Encl Datatype
    FIRST_ID FIRST * | O(") CHARACTER
    SECOND_ID NEXT * | O(") CHARACTER
    THIRD_ID NEXT * | O(") CHARACTER
    LANGUAGE_CODE NEXT 3 | O(") CHARACTER
    DISPLAY_TEXT NEXT 2002 VARCHAR
Am I missing something totally obvious in my control and data files? I've played with various combinations of delimiters (commas vs '|'), trailing nullcols, optional enclosed etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • How do you append to a "string" type field?

    ABAPers,
I am trying to understand how to append values to a "string" data type in an efficient way. One way to append to a string is using "concatenate" feature.
    data: myRetVal type string.
    DO
CONCATENATE myRetVal ',' myNewData INTO myRetVal.
    ENDDO.
However, CONCATENMATE is not efficient in this scenario. Each time you call it, myRetVal gets copied into myRetVal all over. As the string grows, this statement will execute slower and slower.
The other option I thought is to use offset mechanism.
    MOVE myNewData to myRetVal+myRetValLen.
However, it appears "string" and "xstring" type fields do not support offset and length operations.
Is there a third choice that I am missing?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Pradeep

    There is no such operator.
But if just using literals, you can use the &, like this.
    data: string type string.
string = 'This is the first part ' & 'This is the second part'.
Again, this will not work with variables.
