Various problem with Powerbook

My boss just bought a Powerbook over the weekend and now he has taken it back. He bought it because of all the problems he was having with his PCs. Felt the Mac was supposed to be bulletproof.
Tried to run ITunes and it took awhile to start the problem (on the PC it comes right up).
The first song he played ran for about 15 seconds and then he got the spinning wheel that wouldn't stop (I have similar problems on my G4 periodically when using browser).
He said he could barely touch the bottom of the machine it was so hot.
He also got various information at the apple store which he found out later was incorrect. For example, he was told you didn't have to partition the drive to use Vista on it - later he was told he did have to partition it.
I happen to like the Mac myself and have always had one but it is difficult to promote when this is happening.
Tom

First of all, we'd have to know a little about the hardware you have.
• How much RAM do you have? You can find out by clicking on the Apple icon at the top left of your screen. If for some odd reason, it's under 512MB, you need to get some more. OS X isn't anywhere near the memory hog like Vista, but when you try and work cover flow, it eats up quite a bit of memory.
• Why speed processor do you have? Hopefully it's a faster one. A check in the same place will tell you this. It would also be good to check on how much video memory (VRAM) your machine has. This can be found under the "System Profiler" app. which can be launched via the "More Info" button of the "About This Mac" window. More here means faster responses to iTunes stuff.
• How much free space do you have left on your HD? To find out, select the HD icon on your desktop, and either type "Command-I" or Select File->Get Info from the pull down menus. If you have 1GB or less and you're not running anything else, you might notice some slowness in your system's responsiveness, especially when you're multi-tasking.
• What kind of file are you trying to get iTunes to launch? A video file? A music file? What format? At what bit-rate? If you were trying to watch a video in iTunes that was very compressed and a high bit-rate, then it might get choppy. Type "Command-J" while in iTunes, and check things like "Bit Rate" and "Kind" from the selection boxes to get this info to appear.
• Now here's the big Q: Is there anything else running when you try to do your afore mention operation? There are a couple ways to check this: Launch the "Activity Monitor" (Mac HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor) and see what is eating up all of your memory or processing power.
Or, if you want to have easy access to stats like these, but with less clutter and CPU usage, look at this widget here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
I've always found it quite useful, and it'll keep running taps on most of the previous questions so far.
Perhaps you have background programs running that are eating up your power. It could be that some of these launch upon login. Look at System Preferences->Accounts->Login Items, and delete some of the programs/processes that start at login. If your system runs a lot of programs, chances are that a few of them want priority when you login. If you just want something to stop that's in your way, check out the "Force Quit" window. Any programs that aren't responding will be highlighted in red and you might want to consider stopping them.
You shouldn't stop any processes that are necessary to the system running, but that's rarely a worry since OS X doesn't let you do that easily (or without adim. privileges).
Finally, and this amy be the big one, the system is automatically set to do weekly cleanup. I don't know what yours is set at, but once in a while, usually around 3 am, the system runs what are called cron scripts and fixes permissions, journals, etc. I personally run a little app. called "Cocktail:"
http://www.maintain.se/cocktail/index.php
If my system starts lagging after I've run it through the gamut of work that I do, a little clean-up now and then picks it up nicely. "Emptying caches" is another great performance-fixer. Apps. like Safari can hog a bunch of memory when you're doing intensive tasks, so if you go to Safari->Clear Cache, you might fine a little boost there after you've been surfing a lot.
Macs have a lot of buffers built into them to try and keep the system from crashing. This give you peace of mind while multi-tasking, but when problems surface, it's easy enough to try and figure out the cause. I don't know what your friend plans on doing with his/her new Mac, but when you do a lot of work that drains the system, these little tips can help even basic users squeeze the last ounce out of their machines power. The big things to try and have are enough free disk space on your HD, and plenty of RAM.
www.Newegg.com is also a good place to get cheap workable RAM. I remember getting 2 1GB DIMMS (max out the system) for less than $250 for my PB, and that was almost 2 years ago. After you've tried all of the simple maintenance avenues to boost performance, you can always try for more memory. Good luck!

Problem with Powerbook G4 - 15 inch, machine ins currently connected to the DVI/AVI adapter so I can use the powerbook with a monitor attached, and have been doing so for about 3 months so far, with no problems, now, it wont boot up without giving me the grey screen with the "please restart, hold done restart button for several seconds etc". I did the power management reset, take out battery - even though battery dead, and remove adapter, hold down button for 5 seconds etc... it worked, finally booted up, but the DVI/AVI monitor adapter stuff was not connected when it booted up. When i put them back on, and tried to restart, i get the same "please restart, hold done restart button for several seconds etc" what do you think could be happening, could it be the DVI/AVI adapter or something a lot more serious

    Thanks and noted.
I'd suggest you post in the PowerBook G4 area. This forum is for
older, pre-G3 PowerBooks and so is probably not the
most likely place for you to get help with your G4.
    Good luck.

  • Having a graphics problem with PowerBook G4...

So I have a PowerBook G4 Aluminium 1.33 GHz and it seems to be having a problem with the computer's graphics. I haven't found any insight on this problem online. The PowerBook will start up and look fine, then as it gets warmer, the graphics start to do weird things. It's really hard to explain what it looks like at the height of the problem. It is certainly still a usable computer, but you get green dots and sometimes purple on the screen, and they move around when windows move around. It seems to react more to blues and greens, and also there's more in places like window shadows. Like I said though, only after it warms up. It takes about 5 minutes to be warm enough to start causing the problems. Are there any fixes? Help!

As video failures are commonly heat-related, you may wish to monitor your temps and fans. Get Temperature Monitor here:
    http://bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
It's free and puts a temp readout in your menubar for easy checking.
The DashBoard widget iStatPro, also monitors temps but I like the other program better. However, the widget will monitor fan performance on some PowerBooks:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
Note that is may not detect fans on older PowerBooks. I have a 1gHz 17" and iPS doesn't see any fans.
I'm not sure of the safety cut-off range for the PowerBooks. I know my fans speed up when the temps read by Temperature Monitor reach the vicinity of 140°F.
If the widget detects your fans but never shows them speeding up, that could be causing your issues.

  • Overheating problem with PowerBook G4 17"

    Hi,
I've recently noticed my PowerBook getting really hot. Is this likely to be a problem with the fan and if so how would I be able to find out?
    Thanks

You need to read the actual temps to tell if there is a problem. "Rather hot" can mean different things to different people. As you have Tiger, get a free Dashboard widget here:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
iStat Pro provides a lot of info about your system. Download it and post the temps you see to get advice on whether your are too hot. Supposedly, processor temps can approach 212F/100C before the computer does a safety shutdown.
Can you hear the fans? The ones on my PB17 1G come on around 125-140F (60F).
    Other things to consider:
    1) Are you placing the Powerbook on a blanket of pillow? Not recommended--the aluminum case bottom is part of the heat dissipation system.
    2) There is a long, narrow hot air aexhaust vent under the hinge in the back. It must not be blocked
    3) Use your Activity Monitor (AM) utility to check for runaway background processes. To see them you will need to set AM's "Show" menu to "All processes." It defaults to show only user processes.
Be aware that Apple had trouble with Apple Hardware test for the PowerBook G4. Apparently versions shipped with some computers did not work and neither did later ones posted as disk images on the support site. My 1Ghz PB is so affected.

  • VArious problems with intel graphic card

There is an old regarding part of this subject with no improvement. I have a 943/940GML graphic card. Normally the frame rate should synchronize with vfresh but it does not seems to works well: glxgears is not smooth at all unless you move the mouse on the windows. Running it with
    <option name="vblank_mode" value="0" />
    fix the problem.
Apart from that I get better performance with the lts 2.6.32 kernel than with 3.0. This is noticeable (I have less CPU time when I let googleearth rotate the earth).
I had several problems with this driver. I have:
Option     "DebugWait" "on"  in xorg.conf (otherwise fonts are broken)
options i915 powersave=0 in modprobe.conf (otherwise the screen blink every minute or so)
    the problem with dri mentioned.
Moreover each time I upgrade my system, there is one chance out of two that a new regression will appear. What is it with this driver? Why can't the devs secure a stable version? I know I should report bugs upstream but I am tired now. This is a permanent alpha driver.

  • Various problems with Zen Micro, but getting smaller and small

Last night I turned on my Zen Micro and heard Led Zeppelin's All of my Love for about 4 seconds before the micro froze and started buzzing, reminding me of my Nintendo when the cartridge was dirty. So I tried restarting it several times and it continued with the same. I left it for the night, since I was at someone else's house and had not installed the new firmware; I needed to be at my laptop to mess around with it. In the morning, I looked up some stuff and found out how to access the recovery mode, which I did. I did all of the options, the last one being to format the hard dri've. I had already erased the firmware, but I formatted the hard dri've after I plugged it into my USB port and saw that it had been corrupted anyways and it was completely empty. Then, seeing as everything was gone anyways, I took the opportunity to download the firmware updates and install them, or at least attempt to. I got a message saying the battery level was too low, and to charge it before installing the firmware. I took out the battery and it ran on main power while I installed the first firmware. Then, I put the battery back in and installed the second firmware (newest) and it gave me the same error message about the level being too low. I took out the battery again, but this time it just turned off. I didn't quite understand so I just went to sleep and left it charging. I woke up and was able to install the firmware. Then I went to Windows Media and synced my library to the Micro. Bad idea. I don't know if it's the same with any of you, but I don't exactly love all the songs in my music library. It took every audio file I have on my computer and put it on the Micro. So I figured I'd just open MediaSource and do the whole editing thing I did before it got busted. That doesn't work because of course the music under Creative Zen Micro is different from the music under PC Music Library which, until today, were identical. Now. All I want to know is how I can look at the music inside my Micro in the same way I would if it were in my PC Music Library, where I have a scroll bar on the side with all the artists and albums and a list of tracks next to it. I need this because instead of everything being free and looking the same way it would in my downloads folder, everything is now in folders by artist name and it will take me forever to figure out which songs I do and do not want. Still, at least I've got it working now.

It shouldn't be, assuming you synced via WMP the contents of the PC Music Library. Ultimately the contents of the PC Music Library is irrelevant though as don't you want to edit the contents of the player? I'm guessing you're using the v2 firmware which makes this a little harder...

You can't. That's the problem with the v2 firmware. You might want to go back to the . firmware. For the differences in the firmware versions look at the FAQ post.

  • Various problems with google websites in safari

    hi,
I have the latest mbp 13" with retina display and mavericks osx. I have been using safari, but I am having strange issues when using google sites (perhaps the problem also extends to other websites which I haven't noticed).
    For example:
In all google services e.g. search, drive, gmail, you get a bar at the top with your google account. Now I should be able to logout from here or access another Google service by pressing the icon with squares but they are unresponsive. No dropdown appears.
Another problem is when I am using google search, I often want to limit results to 'discussions'. Normally I would be able to do 'more' -> 'discussions' but when i press 'more' the only options I get are news, books, flights and applications.
Other than that safari seems quite normal.
Has anyone experienced similar issues? How can they be resolved?
    thanks,

Safari recently went stupid when it interacts with Google (search, ads, etc).
Also, suddenly can’t access URLs it had no trouble with before.
Often can’t follow links from news aggregators to original sources (like Reuters).
ANYTIME this happens, Chrome has no problem with the same access issues.

  • Various problems with G3 blueberry

Hello, at present I have OS 9.2.2 installed and I have tried several times to install the firmware in order to update to OS X. It crashes each time I click on the button to shut the computer down.
As I thought it may be a problem with the HD I thought I would start from scratch and format however I tried to start up using the OS9 disc but it will not "recognize" the disc, I have kept my finger on the C whilst start up but it ignores it and goes to the 9.2 start up on the HD. I have left it at that as not knowing what to do didn't have any ideas.
Today, I have just tried to start the computer up and it starts loading and then crashes with a time bomb(?) message saying an error has incurred with the system "???#117E" bus error.
What on earth have I done?
    Any ideas please
    Thanks
    G3 blueberry 350   Mac OS 9.2.x

These little machines can really give you fits when they act up like this. The error message and the symptoms point to a hard drive problem. Since the CD drive and the hard drive are on the same buss I'm guessing the hard drive may be fritzing up the buss.
If you're comfortable opening the machine (Takeapart for swapping drives - slot load), remove the drive and see if it will boot using the CD, or (better) put a new, or good, hard drive in and try that.
Another idea would be to weigh the cost of new drives - CD and hard drive + frustration, against the cost of a working replacement for the whole iMac ($60 to $100) on eBay.

  • Various Problems With Admin Priveleges

Hi, I'm an Apple-Certified Macintosh Technician in Canada. I spend so much time helping clients with their Macs that I haven't had much time to do maintenance on my own machine, but tonight I found a couple hours. So, I have a very peculiar problem with my own iMac (2.4ghz Mid 2007) that has me stumped. I started by booting from my Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD, and ran 'repair disk' and 'repair permissions' from disk utility. No errors were found with the file structure, much to my delight, and I have one SUID error that I (have been told) can safely ignore. I have also trashed all my preferences on the user and system level, and have trashed the keychains on the user and system level as well. I then restarted the computer to refresh with new keychains and preferences. So, I know that I should be running smooth as butter.
HOWEVER... I went to install a trial of ViaCAD, and I was presented with a notice that I could not install it because I needed to be an administrator. WHAT?? I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR!! Now, normally when something is installed that requires administrator access, it would ask me for my password, but to my dismay, this one didn't. It simply told me I can't, end of story. No password request. Now, since I am an Apple-Certified Technician, I have access to extra content in the Knowledge Base, as well as service-only areas of Apple's website. I have been unable to locate any information that could help me sort out my own issues. Has anybody reading through this ever had this issue themselves and solved it?
I have read a number of other posts here of others who have this same problem with other software, such as canon camera software, diner town tycoon, or wedding dash... I even tried the "sudo chown" trick to make all files in my home folder belong to me, and I get the same "installer requires admin privileges to run" error. I need help, as a certified tech I can't bear to have an "unsolveable" issue on my own iMac...

It always says there's no permissions and we're always have to be putting in user password. It's frustrating and flat out ridiculous we just want to be able to transfer files back and forth with no problem. Is there away to remove permissions completely?
You've attached your message to a thread that was already marked as "answered". As a result, many people would ignore it. You really should have started your own thread for your problem.
That said, you might be able to solve your problem by attaching an external disk drive to that "server" Mac and marking it to "ignore permissions". This Apple article
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh669.html
is for OS X 10.4, but the procedure should work for newer versions. The point is that you can't set a boot volume to "ignore permissions", but you can for a non-boot volume.

  • Various Problems with Torch 9810

I just switched form a Torch 9800 (after having a Curve 8320) to the Torch 9810.  As requested information, my carrier is ATT; OS is 7; free memory is 2340220952 Bytes; have done a battery pull; only apps are what came with the phone, 4 ring tones, and sixtools.
I'm experiencing a number of bothersome issues with my 9810.  Please let me know if they can be resolved or they're just part of the new OS7 protocol.  If the latter, I'll just switch back to the 9800.  While none is a big deal, together they make the 9810 much less attractive than the 9800 for my uses.  Thanks much for any help you can offer.
    (1) When my phone is plugged into my computer USB, the screen with "Charge, Sync, and USB Drive" pops up constantly and is incredibly annoying.  I'm not sure why the screen exists at all -- sync is through Blackberry desktop and whether you want to charge or use as a USB device is irrelevant.  Can I eliminate this screen pop-up altogether?
    (2) When I'm composing a text, the screen does not show the number of characters used, and I can't tell whether the message is longer than one page to allow me to edit back.  Can I activate somewhere the character counter for texts.
    (3) Every time I hide the icon for Blackberry Protect, it shows up again on restart.  It seems like a good app, but I'm not interested unless it's free and the app seems purposely vague on that score.
    (4) Sometimes when I pick up the phone, it seems to change on its own from the home screen to a different random screen.  This happens even when I'm vary careful not to touch the screen when I pick up the phone.
    (5)  I can't download NYT mobile, Google search does not darken a choice when my cursor stops over it, and I can't move some apps (e.g.., Bloomberg mobile) from the download as it doesn't give me the choice. Are these problems with the app products as they have not yet changed to accommodate OS7 and the 9810?  If so, any idea when these apps will be upgraded?

  • Switched over to Mac and having MAJOR problems with Powerbook G4

    Hello,
I'n the interest of not having to post many threads and to save bandwidth I will post my problems on one single thread so that you can address each issue.
    1) The adapter cord that plugs in to my Powerbook usually has a bright "yellow" light on the endge of the cord when plugged in. Recently the color changed to bright "orange" should I be concerned and is this a sign of something bad to come?
    2) When I press the power button "sometimes" the screen goes grey. I press the button, hear the chime, screen goes grey with a world logo that keeps flashing at limbo preventing me from getting in to the computer system. Why is this happening and how do I correct it?
    3) Select the Apple Icon on the top and go to Mac OSx software, IE Explorer loads and then FREEZES evertything on the system. It's as though it's crashing from the onset.
    4) At any given time while I'm searching through files or surfing the net a ridiculous littl ball appears in the shape of a rainbow that essentially locks my ENTIRE SYSTEM. I cannot click on any Icon or do much of anything. Forced to sit and helplessly look at this stupid object with no directive as to what to do. I can't even shut down my system in safe mode because it won't let me access the Apple Icon on the top menu. At last resort I have to HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON for 10 seconds just to shut it down.
    5) How can you retrieve files deleted by accident or do a system restore like you can in Windows? No disks came with my computer so I'm hoping that there is a button to click that can reverse actions and bring back system to an earlier time. I'm sure that Apple must have thought about this as people are going to make many mistakes and will need immediate and non complex recourse in restoring files and the system in general. I changed Admin privilidges to myself and deleted the former Admin of my system, thinking that it would only delete the "name" but instead I suspect that the system deleted 5GB of files that the former Admin installed? Not sure. I have nothing in my trash can and the deleted files under former Admin are in the form of an "image" on my hard disk. I tried to open the deleted file by clicking on the Icon and it's telling me "DISK IMAGE FAILED TO MOUNT no mountable file system. This is very frustrating as I need to see what files have been deleted and restore those that I need. I have OFFICE MAC X suite that now I can't locate and yesterday I downloaded the Opera browser and turned on the Mac this morning only to find that it to is gone.
Now granted Windows is a headache in itself but I never imagined that I would be going through all this madness with a Mac. Everyone spoke so highly of them and I'm finding out different from first hand experience. Hopefully, you can help me resolve the above issues as I'm feeling very frustrated with this computer.

    Hi again,
You definitely need to purchase some replacement disks for your computer. Just from hard shutdowns via the powerbutton can do system file damage and you need to Repair Dick using the install disk.
From your reply I would suggest obtaining a good Mac OSX users book such a one of the David Pogue books etc. You can find any number of them online for your OS. The learning of the Mac OS can be somewhat confusing for a switcher from PC and Microsoft OS's. I was somewhat lucky in that when I first started using computers I learned on a Mac so I never had any relearning curve to deal with. I think you will find if you stick with your Mac and OSX that you will learn to love it compared to PC's.
I can assure you that Apple did not drop the ball when it came to the PowerBooks as evident by it being one of the most succesful of all Mac notebook computers.....there are many many happy users still of PowerBooks. There is a specific forum here in Discussions for Powerbook computers that may help you with certain issues.
re: "I went ahead and downloaded my favorite browser Opera for the second time, since it disappeared yesterday after I restarted my machine. Hopefully, I will find it on the Doc the next time I start my system."
Once you download an app to your Mac you will need to place it in your HD/Applications folder. From there you can simply drag it's alias to the Dock or click open the app and then when the icon appears in the Dock click on its icon in the Dock once and hold and from its pop up contextual menu select "Keep In Dock". Applications do not automatically stay in the Dock.
I am not sure I follow your description of the problem of the lost 5GB of files that were on some sort of Disk Image and how you are trying to retrieve them for me to be able to help. If you have deleted the files they are gone on your computer and you will need to use a third party software to recover them (DataRescue is one such utility but these are expensive softwares and can have varying results with file recovery). If you know the name of any of the missing files you can do a search using the finders search field (double click on your HD icon and then use its search field upper right) to make sure that the files are indeed not on your HD anymore.
I also wanted to suggest when using the command +option + escape key combination to force quit a process sometimes may take a couple or a few tries to get it to work sometimes (at least that has been my experience). Did you read through Dr. Smoke's FAQ concerning the SBBOD?
In the end you will need to learn common system maintenance for your OS to function properly such as Repairing Permissions via Disk Utility and running the cron maintenance (daily, weekly and monthly) tasks which can be done manually or by downloading a third party freeware utility such as MacJanitor to help do this easily. One of the biggest reasons to have your install disks is this is how you will need to repair the disk for system corruption among other problems. This can only be done with OS 10.3.9 by using the install disk and booting to its DiskUtility.
I hope these tips help a little more and do post back with further questions,

  • Problems with Powerbook and How to prepare it for Apple repair engineers?

    What to do?
I have a few issues with my last gen 17" Powerbook.
From the start my display has been physically out of line by a millimetre or two, and also from the start, I have had a dip in the outer plastic where the CD drive is, in which revealing the edging of the casing at the palm-rest.
The reason I haven't had these issues looked at by Apple any sooner, is that I haven't been able to afford not to have my computer with me, due to an intense amount of college work.
Recently, I have started to see black marks appear at the right palm-rest area. I'm not sure whether or not the aluminium is painted, and this is it wearing off, or whether this is a direct affect to the aluminium itself.
    http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8562/pblq9.jpg
Also, just yesterday, I have encountered the infamous headphone socket issue, where it is stuck on an optical output. I have a red light shining constantly out of it. I've tried the usual plugging and un-plugging proceedure, but have had no joy.
I've also lost around 300mAh of battery capacity within 9 months through around 170-180 charge cycles. I'm not sure if this is normal or what-not.
I have around 3 months of my first-year warranty left, so will all of these issues be covered under warranty?
If so, how do I prepare my Powerbook for repair?
    - Do I need to remove all my necessary files?
    - Do I need to take it in its original box, or do they prefare just the Powerbook itself?
    - What kind of time period can I expect the entire proceedure to take?
    Thank you for your time,
    onlyone-jc.

It is really hard to say whether Apple will repair certain issues, or blame it on your negligence. Your best bet is to contact AppleCare and find out. The thing is, since you are well past the 90 days, there is a per incident fee for phone calls until it is discovered that the problem is hardware based and the entire issue was hardware based. The per incident applies to case numbers you get when you call AppleCare. Your other option is to bring it in to an Apple authorized service center where they can diagnose if it is something hardware they can fix or not.

  • Problem with PowerBook (but NOT MacBook) and two access points on network

I recently installed a wall-plugged ethernet adapter system (Netgear XE104 and XE103) and plugged a wireless access point (Netgear WPN802) into one of the adapters (in the part of our house where we lacked a wireless signal) in order to extend the range of our (DSL) wireless network. I configured this new access point--disabled DHCP, assigned an IP address to the access point that does not fall into the wireless router's IP adress range, put the wireless router and access point on different channels (6 and 11), and made sure the router and access point had the same SSID.
I have had no problems using the resulting setup with our new MacBook--everything goes as planned. BUT I am having a terrible time with my PowerBook G4. It has a really strong signal everywhere, but when I open my browser it says that I am not connected to the internet. The problem seems to be that my PowerBook refuses to change channels once it connects to one. I installed iStumbler to see if I could manually control which access point/channel the PowerBook uses, and, while I can track the signal strengths for both access points, I can't get my PowerBook to switch from one access point to the other.
I've tried just about everything I can think of. I suppose I could try giving a different SSID to the access point (and then try to switch with the airport menu in the toolbar), but I would like to avoid this if possible.
I would really appreciate any advice you have. Thank you!

Can you connect if you temporarily turn off WEP or WPA?
This will determine if it is a WEP or WPA issue.
Does your PC support WPA, from both a hardware and a software perspective?
The problem you are having probably lies with the encryption key.

  • IP - Various problems with BEX Analyser - help would be nice

    Hi,
we use IP in combination with BEX analyser. We experience certain problems. Does anyone experienced the same issues mentioned below:
    1) if a planning function is executed, it is executed twice when your cursor is within the query itself. If it is outside the query when clicking on the button, it is executed once (like it should).
    2) Locking: we don't have locking problems, but from the moment two people lock each other once, they need to close their analyser and re-open it (so logon again) in order to be able to start planning again in a non-locked part. If they just change their selection (to the not-lock part) they remain locked!!!
    3) planning function with multiple variables: system cannot retrieve values of all variables.
    details of function:
    CMD                                               1       EXECUTE_PLANNING_FUNCTION
    PLANNING FUNCTION NAME           1      AG10_COPY01
    DATA PROVIDER_FILTER                 1     DATA_PROVIDER_1
    VAR_NAME                                     1       PROF_CTR
    VAR_VALUE                                    1       510
    VAR_NAME                                     2     PERIOD
    VAR_VALUE                                    2        012
    VAR_NAME                                     3       CUSTOMER
    VAR_VALUE                                    3     1000
-> following the instruction of the SAP course, in case of multiplle variables they should start from 0 and have an incremental increase. But the system only recognizes the variable with index = 1
    regards
    D

    Dear Dries,
could it be that the variable type you use require a different set of commands?
In general the parameters of the BEx Analyzer follow the rules of the SAp BW 3.5 Webruntime. When reading this detailed documentation you find that depending on the type of variable other names have to be used, e.g. when using a selection option variable you need something line varname_low, varname_high, ...
The documentation can be found in the online-help:

  • Various problems with iPhone 3G

I got my iPhone on September 17th. Since then, I have had the following problems:
    1) Dropped calls
    2) Delays in getting/sending text messages - sometimes they come all at once, sometimes they wait an hour to be delivered
    3) It crackles when I hold the phone up to my ear; on speaker, it sounds clear as a whistle
    4) I ripped some videos to my iPhone. Two of them lost sound after about 10 seconds. I restarted them and they played no sound at all. Left it alone for a night, the next day it happened again. After a while, the sound returned.
    5) Sometimes the screen doesn't adjust when I view a web page and turn the phone sideways.
    6) My apps randomly stop working. I click on them, they open briefly to where the screen goes black but the date bar stays on the top. They don't load - they quit. After a while, they start working again.
    7) The other day, the battery died after 7 hours. I was using 3G and using data about a total of 1.5 hours that day. The phone's battery died at 2:30 that day. I had charged the phone all night through the MacBook's USB port, so it had a fully charged battery.
    8) At times, the phone says "No Service" when I'm standing in a spot that has had service at other times.
    9) Today, during a call, the screen went black and I couldn't respond to the phone prompts. I couldn't turn off the phone, I couldn't return to the home screen, I couldn't tap the screen to awaken it. After 4 minutes, it let me operate it again.
I charge it nightly through the MacBook Pro. I have iTunes 8 and the most current software for the iPhone. I went to AT&T and told them my problems. They basically said they couldn't do anything and encouraged me to call Apple and see about getting a new phone. I have family that has the iPhone 3G and they have had none of these problems. Oh, and the problems persisted AFTER I did a Restore on the phone 2 nights ago. What are the chances I can get Apple to send me a new phone or that I could stop by the store and exchange this one for a new one?

    You're welcome.
Oh, and is there a way I can back up my contacts so I don't have to reenter them?
In regards to contact information and calendar events, the iPhone is designed to be synced with the supported application or applications on your computer. If you don't want to lose your iPhone contacts that are not available with the Address Book - having to manually reenter these on your iPhone again, you need to sync your iPhone with the Address Book on your Mac.
You can make use of an Address Book Group for your Address Book contacts that you want available on your iPhone only. Select this option under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences - selecting the designated Address Book Group only for the contacts that you want available on your iPhone only. All contacts (currently in the Address Book on your Mac and the contacts that are currently available in your iPhone's address book that you manually entered on your iPhone) will be available in the Address Book on your Mac, but you can designate which Address Book contacts are available on your iPhone only by making use of an Address Book Group and selecting only that Group to be available with your iPhone's address book.
