Varying download speeds

when i download off of software update i get a really fast download speed, but when i download the doom 3 demo it is really slow (at the beggining it starts off at around 60KBps and drops really low, lower than 10KBps sometimes, and it wont go back up. and it tries to mount too early causing the mounting to fail. i do not know why it does it (10MB of 465MB it mounts unless i have a fast download speed) whats up with airport? i also have AirTrafficControll widget and i can connect to networks that way too. Also do i need airport 4.2 if i have airport Extreme?

Thanks for the info.
When you have a chance, you might want to recheck your settings for the Time Capsule base station and Express remotes, as it's easy to miss a step during configuration.
AirPort Utility is used to configure all devices and you can click the Manual Setup button to save time and access the settings.
For the Time Capsule, click the Wireless tab just below the row of icons at the top of the setup page. On the wireless settings page, the Wireless Mode would be "Create a wireless network" and there should be a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended". That's it for the TC.
For both of the Expresses, click the Wireless tab as above. On the wireless page, the Wireless Mode should be set to "Extend a wireless network". The network created by the TC should be displayed. Also make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients". That's it for the Expresses.
I believe that you could also configure the Express that you have set to "Join" to "extend" as well. This setting seemed to work for AirTunes when I tried it a few weeks ago. If that's the case, you will also have a 3rd Express "extending" the wireless network.
As a frame of reference, I have 2 Express units that I normally use to extend and the speed remains constant within 5-10% in virtually all locations within the house and even out on the patio. Unless you do have some interference issues, (use iStumbler, www.istumbler.net to check), I think you should expect very good wireless performance.
One note to point out if you are using 802.11n 5 GHz. The higher frequencies of this band are absorbed much more quickly than the 2.4 GHz band, so you will see a much steeper drop off in speed with distance and any minor obstructions on 5 GHz.

  • Widely varying broadband download speeds, why?

For a little over one week now (and tested a various points during the day) my broadband download speeds were so slow it was not possible to get a reading using the BT tool (Broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk recorded download speeds of around 0.185 mb).  Checking with BT there was no reported fault.  Today is has restored to a perfectly acceptable 2.85 mb connection speed (2.55 mb download speed).  As far as I am aware nothing has changed.  Any suggestions why?  Thanks,  Nick

  • Very Slow Download Speed

    Hi,
I am experiencing very slow downloading speeds, when I am just normally downloading something in Safari, or downloading a torrent with upto 100 seeders.
The maximum download speed I have seen on my computer is 80kb/s, which is painfully slow for downloading the Adobe trials, when they reach about 1gb.
I have a router, connected to 2 computers, and speedtest.net has told me that my download speed is 1mb/s.
It seems like download speeds are being restricted to 80kb/s, so is there any way to 'unlock' full potential downloading speeds?
    Any help much appreciated!

I think you're making the same mistake a lot of people make.
The maximum download speed I have seen on my computer is 80kb/s
Safari reports downloads in kiloBYTES per second, not kilobits, so that 80KB/s translates to about 640 kilobits per second.
downloading the Adobe trials, when they reach about 1gb
Really? 1 gigabit per second? I assume that's a typo.
speedtest.net has told me that my download speed is 1mb/s
therefore your downloads are progressing at about 64% of maximum. That sounds about right - you won't get maximum throughput for every download - it will vary based on server location, network load and more.

  • [SOLVED] Download speed is slow while playing certain Steam games

This is a weird one: When playing Steam games my download speed (everywhere) drops to a fraction of what it should be (roughly 1/10th). My upload speed is unaffected.
I don't know how long this has been the case but I think it's fairly recent since when playing games I often tab out and do stuff on the net. I would've noticed.
This doesn't happen with Portal 2, Civ V, Guacamelee or Xcom but does happen with Rochard, Steamworks Dig, Gateways (2d puzzle platformer) and Awesomenauts. I was looking for a pattern but I fail to see one.
To be clear about the problem: If I start one of those games and tab out my download speed is 1/10th what it should be. If I exit the game my download speed returns to normal instantly.
I've checked for obvious stuff like Steam downloading in the background (it's not and nor is anything else - no unusual network activity at all). I've checked for mere coincidence - signal dropping/interference and so on and that seems not to be it either. It's also far too consistent and, as I say, upload is unaffected for some reason.
I don't even know what info to give with this one or how to begin tracking it down so any advice will be received gratefully.
I'm running Arch 64bit, all up to date.

Ok, well, I *think* I've sort of solved it:
I went through various wifi channels and found that the degree to which my download speed was reduced varied depending on the wifi channel I was on. So I left a game running and watched the download speed and the speed of my CPU and GPU as they clocked up/down and it seems that one of them is managing to interfere with the wifi signal. Or at least that's my best guess. High wifi channel numbers seem to be affected least (significantly so) so ... yeah.
I don't know if this makes sense technically (and no idea how I've never encountered it before) but... that's my guess.

  • WRT150N Slow Win 7 Download Speed

My new Windows 7 desktop and laptop both have slow download speed over wireless, about 1mbps, hard wired they both run about 10mbps.  Upload they go 3mbps.  My 2 yr old Vista laptop can consistently get 10mbps wireless download.
I took the windows 7 laptop to Best Buy and they were able to run 7 mbps download.
I have played with all my Wireless Router settings based on searches I have performed here without success.  I'm guessing the WRT150N can't support something going on with Windows 7.
Anybody have a solution for this?
    Thanks

I had same prob.  Found this and it worked for me.  the only thing I changed were the transmission rate speeds under the advanced setting.  Mine only had 130 Mbps for the wirless N setting not 162 mbps, but it worked for me.  I hope it works for you.  I have been messing with this prob for weeks now.  Such a relief!!
Finally I have some success to write about.
After a few months of fiddling with settings and being very frustrated, I think I finally have hit upon something that appears to be working....for me, at least.
Yesterday, I talked with Linksys Support via LiveChat. They recommended that for the WRT150N router---on the Advanced Wireless Settings Tab, that I change the DTIM to 3, and the RTS Threshold and Fragementation settings to 2304.......and also change (RTS and Frag) them on the wireless card (WPC300N).
So, I did that and didn't notice any real improvement. My wireless reception--while the card says 'Excellent'--had speeds varying from 1Mbps to 216Mpbs...seemingly at random intervals.....no rhyme or reason.
Then I came across an obscure thread in some forum while Googling this topic. It recommended that you change your 'N Transmission Rate' to 162Mbps. Mine had been on AUTO, as was the regular 'Transmission Rate' for the "G" laptops on my network.
So I promptly changed both of those settings from AUTO to 54Mbps and 162Mbps respectively......and BINGO.....since I have done that, my speed from the card hasn't dropped lower than 108Mbps. It stays around 243Mbps and often will stay at 270Mbps when I am streaming something.
Don't know how long this will last, but its been the best 12 hours since I purchased the WRT150N and the WPC300N.
Hope this helps anyone else out there!
    Sincerely,
    Stan

  • Ridiculous Download Speed

Since earlier this week I have been experiencing problems with my Broadband connection.  Yesterday it came to a head and now I'm only getting 0.13mbps download speed.  I've contacted the Indian call centres on numerous occasions but I just get the same reaction.  We are looking into it and will call you as soon as it's sorted.  I was due a call yesterday evening but didn't recieve it so I had to sit for 20 mins to get connected to someone else who tried to help but ended up saying the same.  I've spoken so someone else this morning only to be told that I'd have to wait 24 hours to see if they can figure out what the problem is.
Call me pessimistic but I don't have the greatest of confidence in having it sorted out but for me this is not acceptable.  I rely on my internet connection as I work from home and this disruption in service is meaning I have to make a 100 mile round trip to the office to collect my workload as I cant download files of the size required.
i understand these things happen but my frustration's are that I feel as though I am being fobbed off and come tomorrow I'll not be any closer to getting the problem sorted.

i would appreciate some kind of assitance from someone or even just a number from the UK.

VangieChuck the problem is definitely not iTunes it is your ISP download provision. Either your ISP needs to make a service call and solve your bandwidth issues or you need a better service, granted it all depends where in the world you are located. In Kappy's and my neck of the woods we are use to 5 - 250 Mbps download rates with an average of about 25 mbps for most city dewellers. Upload will vary depending on your service.

My Downstream is over 6000kbps yet my i'm only achieving 200kbps download speed. Why is my IP profile so low?
    Thanks

Probably because of 1 of maybe 3 reasons ...
Either you have been resetting the hub to get a better speed ...
Or the hub has been resetting itself, because of a line or excessive error faults.....
Or ... your connection may have been affected by the recent network problems ... possibly to do with
either metro node or BRAS failure ... and not anybody's fault.
The best thing you can do, is leave it connected, uninterrupted, and it should resurrect itself ...
but it may take a day or 3 .....
You do have loss of signal errors .... has it been disconnecting?

  • Download speed unusable

I have a new apple TV (2 wks old). During the first week everything seemed to work (except home sharing was totally inconsistent - but that is another issue I think). I only looked at movie previews and they all seemed to work. I noticed that the device would be warm to the touch.
Last night I tried for the first time to watch a movie. "SALT" 1 hr 40 minutes in high def. After a few minutes of loading it reports it will be ready in another 2.5 hours. A few hours later it reports it will be ready in another 3 hours. I have stopped everything, reset to factory defaults, loaded the latest firmware (took 5 hours). The device is always cold to touch now. I ran the download speed test (telling it my speed was 4MB/s) and returned a positive result to the test. I have reset everything in the network and tested the network thoroughly from other systems. I'm wondering if the Apple TV itself has failed. A movie preview that is 2 minutes long takes about 5 minutes to load before it starts to play, and then usually has to stop after playing the first minute.

    Ken Wiens wrote:
Thanks - although it still doesn't answer the questions of why the apple TV only uses 50% of the available bandwidth on a wired connection, and why the times varied so dramatically on the movie I mentioned (we downloaded to a separate itunes account first so that we knew exactly the sizes of the movie in both high def and std def).
The question here is whether or not you're truly getting a sustained 4 Mbps - either due to you getting slower speeds due to contention from other users at certain times or your ISP throttling access at certain times/to certain sites, or after you've downloaded a certain quota of data at a certain time of day - the small print of your contract may specify such limitations.
If you know you get a consistent 4 Mbps the times are slow - could be Apple's servers being slow, could be one of the DNS issues reported (basically don't use Google's DNS servers).
Based on the chart you pointed out, the movie should have downloaded in far less time than I am taking. We downloading the high def movie on this network to itunes in 47 minutes, the apple tv is currently looking like it will take about 9 hours. I appreciate that my network speed is too slow according to the apple recommendations - but why is it so significantly much slower than downloading to a PC (the test was done on the same network and in both cases (the pc and the apple tv) all other devices were disconnected first - at the router to ensure a fair test)
Just feels like there is something else wrong here.
    Yes, that doesn't sound right.
I get a sustained 3.5Mbps from my ISP.
I rented 3 movies last night on my AppleTV1. The first HD movie said it would be ready to watch in 38 minutes. The second movie I rented (once the first had completely downloaded) was only available in SD and was ready to play in seconds. The third HD film I rented was going to be ready in 40 minutes.
The AppleTV1 was a much better solution for rentals with slower connections as the film stays until it expires or is deleted, unlike ATV2 where other actions can necessitate redownloading most or all of a rental which is only good for a fast connection (but even then wasteful of Apple's internet bandwidth let alone yours).

  • Slow BT download speed

i just wonder is it part of OSX nature for slow BT download rate or juts some setting problem .
    Same torrent ,same condition.
ON OSX using Transmission or Azureus with port OPEN
alway only get about 1/3 -1/2 speed for the same torrent compare with Utorrent on XP.
is there any thing i can do to improve the download speed ?
    thx a lot.

Whilst software (especially music!) is much better and (in the long run) cheaper when bought from licensed shops etc (if you are e.g. a student, you often get stuff at 1/2 - 1/10th of the price!), more to your question, download speeds can vary dramatically, depending on time of the day, firewalls and available feeds.
Some broadband providers use telephone lines, some dedicated cable. Others mostly support (Windows PC's) and their platforms may not be set up for Macintosh.
Finally, e.g. someone in the UK, you do not make it clear, whether you refer to "British Telecom" (BT), whose down and upload speeds are not that impressive at times, OR are referring to "Bittorrent".
Hope you find some of the above useful.

    Hello Ron and Karen,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
As an initial troubleshooting step for your iPhone's Wi-Fi, I recommend that you update your iOS devices to iOS 8.1 by following the steps in the article below.
Update the iOS software on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Any suggestions for improving download speeds on movies. It took hours to download my first purchase.  I've used Amazon and Netflix for renting movies and had reasonable download speeds.

    Hi Travelling fool 101,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like you were able to update the iPad but were eventually able to. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update - Apple Support
Download takes a long time, or you can't reach update server
iOS updates require a persistent Internet connection, and the time it takes to download the update will vary according to the size of the update and your Internet speed. You can use your device normally while downloading the iOS update, and iOS will notify you when you can install the update. To improve the speed of the download, avoid downloading other content.

Downloaded much and now can not see how to fix it?

I hate the new downloads-in-a-tab scheme. This was an unnecessary change in my book (if it aint broke, don't "fix it").
So in order to get it back, I performed the about:config browser.download.useToolkitUI change, but now all I get is a blank download window that pops up every time I download something.
Is there something else that I need to do? I've checked the change and it was saved, but it didn't resolve my issue as much as it just caused me a new issue.

  • WRT310N Playstation 3 Slow Download speed and general lag

Hey guys, I just recently bought the WRT310N and got both of my computers working with it. One is wired directly into the router, while the other is running off wireless. My Playstation 3 is able to connect to the router but I am getting an extremely slow connection speed.
Right now, both PC's get about 6.4-6.5 Mbps download speed while my Playstation is anywhere from 600 Kbs to 1.2 Mbps. I have plugged in my Playstation 3 directly into the modem and got a speed of 3.2 Mbps and was downloaded a demo very fast, but I do not recieve anywhere near those results when using it wireless.
Any advice? I have tried opening the ports, but that only seemed to slow it down. A couple of days ago I opened the ports specific to the game NHL 10 and for two days I was getting such a good speed in the game that it felt like I was playing offline, which was great! Then this morning, it just seemed do a complete 180. Now when I play the game I get an extreme amount of lag, and my other games like CoD4 get random lag spikes. Like, I'll be running and I get a lag spike which seems to happen fairly consistently every minute or so.
Any advice? Should I try opening the ports again or what?

I think you need to adjust the wireless settings of your Router, The wireless settings on your Router must have been setup to its default that's the reason you are receiving low signal strength on your PS3.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
