VB Process Does Not Shut Down After Attaching VM

I am using the axbridge with Java 1.5.0_02 to embed a swing GUI into a VB app. When I close the VB app, the window disappears, but the process is still running.
I believe that part of the reason why I've encountered this problem lies in the way the VB app is implemented. The app is a COM out-of-process server brought up from Excel using...
Object m_tool = CreateObject("VBapp.ToolClass").
To bring down the app, m_tool is set to "Nothing". COM then realizes that no one is holding a reference to anything in the server the VB app is running as, and the server is shut down by COM. Unfortunately, a thread still seems to be running, so the process doesn't die.
Doing a System.exit() or some other equivalent would certainly take care of the process, but it doesn't make sense for my addition to the greater application to descide when the application should be killed. I need Java to shut down cleanly.
Here's why I think Java is not shutting down cleanly. Upon inspecting the process, I find one thread that is still running. Here's a trace of the stack for that thread.

Notice that it looks like we have a call from Java to native code going on.
Java_com_sun_deploy_util_UpdateCheck_handleUserResponse
I believe the UpdateCheck class has something to do with checking to see if there is a Java version update to be had, but I don't really know for sure. I've tried turning off the auto-update feature through the Java control panel, but that doesn't solve the problem. Does anyone have any info. that might shed some light on what's going on here?

I would definitely have given it longer than a minute.
OS X does quite a few things during a shutdown routine. It clears caches, updates them for the next boot, etc. Sometimes this process can take a bit, especially after software updates or major system changes.
Try shutting down again and see if the problem persists. If the computer doesn't turn off immediately, give it a few minutes before holding down the power button.

  • OS X does not shut down after iTunes is started

Always after I open iTunes my MacBook Pro OS X 10.8 does not shut down (grey screen with spinning wheel). When iTunes is not used the system shut down properly. It seems to be an issue related to iTunes and not to OS (same behavior under Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion). What can be done to fix this problem?

  • Firefox.exe*32 process does not shut down when program is closed in version 17.0.1, on windows 7 64 bit OS.

When trying to open Firefox browser, I get a message Firefox is already running... You can stop the process or restart the computer. This is a recent problem and I can't think of any changes that may have occurred to change the functioning of the two programs.

  • Laptop does not shut down completely after upgrading to Windows 10!!

Ever since I installed Windows 10 64-bit, the PC does not shut down completely. The screen gets blank but the power button is still lit up...Have to manually shut down by holding the power button... Same issue anyone? Any solution or workaround? @HP??

I also have this problem, and have resorted to leaving the computer in Sleep mode when not in use. This is OK as a temporary fix, but is not a permanent solution. This is clearly a problem with HP computers and I would hope HP are aware of the need for urgent action to resolve the problem. I also hope that Microsoft gives them full cooperation. HP and Microsoft, are you listening?

  • Monitor Does Not Shut Down In 15 Minutes

Under power options the monitor is set to turn off on 15 minutes. updated my Shockwave Flash to 10.0 r42 when a flash video is played in any of of my browser and the browser is shut down the monitor does not shut down in 15 minutes. the computer has to be rebooted and then everything is fine. reinstalled Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124 for firefox opera and the situation is ok.
can not understand why the new flash causes this problem.
computer exceeds all of adobe requirements.
if a monitor does not shutdown in power schemes it usually indicates a process running in the bachground.
In this case there appears to be none and it would suggest there is a problem with Shockwave Flash 10.0 r42 and possibly with all shockwave
    player 10 have that problem.
Last year tried another version of 10 and had the same problem
install_flash_player_ax.exe 9.0 r124 will not install on my computer  as a pop up says its not the most current version.
install_flash_player_9_ax.exe 9.0.260.0 will install but  on most sites a pop up will  say flash 10 is required.
Dont know what adobe is up to but clearly something is wrong.
Many people have heard about third-party cookies, and some browsers even block those by default. Some people may even be using Private Browsing modes. However, only few seem to realise that Adobe's Flash player also leaves a cross-browser trail on your local hard drive, and allows for sending cookie-like information back to the server, including third-party sites. And because it is a plugin, Flash does not take any of the browser's privacy settings into account.

Its surprising that no one has noticed this bug and also would like  a working copy of install_flash_player_ax.exe 9.0 r124
    Any comments would be appreciated.

filed a bug report with adobe.

the problem has been fixed in a future beta 10.

  • Macbook does not shut down or restart. It stops at an blank white screen with the cursor moving around it. Updated to the latest software

I have a Macbook Air 13.3" 2012 model. For a couple of days my Macbook does not shuts down. It just stops at a blank white screen with the cursor still hovering around it.  I have to shut it down forcefully every time using the power button.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Hello, When my mini mac goes to sleep my samsung external hard drive does not shut down or dismount properly. when i wake computer i have a error message stating improperly ejected hard drive. It also does not reconize HD until I disconnect and reconnet??? PLEASE HELP Thank you

My Mini was doing the same thing until I reset the PRAM. With four external drives. They would stop inadvertently with an "improperly ejected" error. Granted two of the drives went bad (6 and 7 years old) but a brand spanking new Seagate and a 3 year old Hitachi drive doing the same. Haven't seen the error since resetting the PRAM.
If you don't know how to do that, Reboot while holding the Cmd+Opt+P+R keys until your hear the startup chime three times and then release the keys.

  • HP DV6 3209 TX does not shut down properly & sometimes very slow

    Hi,
I bought a HP Pavilion dv6 3209 tx laptop only one month ago. It provided Win Home Basic. I tried to install Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick along with it, from a pendrive .... I didn't get installed, & at that time, The screen suddenly became colourful with some bizarre symbols !! I shut it down with the power key.
Since then, The home basic became very slow, cpu usage often reaches 100% or very high even while idle, does not shut-down properly.
Then I formatted the hard disk,clean-installed Win 7 Pro (Got it from msdnaa) as well as ubuntu maverick. Now when I restart the system, it shuts down & restarts. But if shut down, then the desktop goes blank, but the fan keeps running, power indicator keeps glowing, system never shuts down till the power key is long-pressed. Also, The CPU usage becomes very high, sometimes it's normal.
I'm confused. Is that any hardware issue ? Do I need to format it again, install xp sp3 & check it if the problems remain ? Please help !!
when the lappy runs in Ubuntu, it's operating speed or CPU usage is normal ..... even when I'm writing this reply from Win 7, everything is normal, but sometimes it's not so smooth...... task manager shows CPU usage as 90 % or more !! I've decided to install xp & then check if the shutdown issue & slowness remains there too.
    Windows-Linux-Unix-Mac

    SOLUTION  :
Open the BIOS (at the starting press f10).
    f9 to restor default
Then save and exit (press f10 again)
    Restart the computer.
Do this again and set it back to "Enable" that wil help the computer to not over heat.
And now your ROVE will start and sleep correctly.

  • Mac Pro 2nd Gen not shutting down after latest leopard update 10.5.3

I have a mac pro 8 core 2nd gen machine (August 2007) just updated from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 and immediately after doing so the machine usually will not shut down by it self. It goes through the shut down process, exits finder but then the grey spinning dial just keeps going. I left it for 30 minutes like that, and then realised I had to manually force power down by holding the power button. It does that now all the time, except once. I don't know what could be causing this, works fine otherwise, but really annoying as the machine is located in a difficult to reach spot- so when I finish work I have to reach around and hold down the power button to get it to turn off - wouldnt' mind to fix that.

  • My new MacBook Pro does not shut down

    Hello,
please help. I have a brand new computer - MacBook pro - 2.2 GHz, Intel Core i7, Mac OS X 10.6.7. When I bought it, I followed the onscreen instructions and "transferred" my old computer, 4 year old MacBook, onto the new one (my accounts, with all the documents, preferences, etc). Now, for some time, before getting my new computer, I had been experiencing problems on my old one: namely, it was not shutting down and I had to "force" it by pressing the switch. I should have known better than transferring the old comp's settings and accounts onto the new one. I didn't and now my new computer is also not shutting down. Does anyone know how to find where the problem is and how to eliminate it? Do I have to backup all, erase, and reinstall everything or is there a less drastic way to cure my afflicted computer?
    Thank you!
    P.

  • My Mac Book Does not shut down

I got a top of the line MacBook in March 2011, paid some $3000. It has had a problem from the beginning and unfortunately the dealer convinced me at the time it was a random happening so i did not return it immediately. But it is really intolerable.
When i try to turn it off, if i have used any programs, it goes to the blue screen but then the circle thing can be going forever and it never completely turns off and it heats up, even if i have quit all programs and nothing but the finder is running. I have to force shut off by pressing five buttons at the same time, including on/off button. It is irritating. At first i thought it was just an inconvenience at shut down, but increasingly the fan is working full time and so loudly all the time and when it does this i know it will not shut down. Shutting applications does not fix it. I have to turn it off, and go through the routine of forcing shut down. When using several applications i think it is slow for a macbook and apps go into loops of non-responding. For a mac with 8GB of memory, an i7 processor, it is not good enough. I am increasingly thinking that all the problems are linked. After 15 months of denial i have had enough of it.
I have used macs since the 1990s and i am more than fed up with the number of lemons i have had from Apple. I just did not want to believe that this is another one. Just not good enough. SInce 2011 i have bought 8 ipods for presents, an ipad and this macbook. Lemons made me go away from macs but i came back.
    Anyone having similar problems?

Just as an experiment, try resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964).
If that doesn't work, maybe someone else can come up with something. Did you buy AppleCare? I would have insisted on a fix during the first year of warranty, but if you bought AppleCare, you can always make an appointment at a Genius Bar and take it in (even if you don't have AppleCare, take it in - they won't charge you to diagnose the problem - just to fix it).
