it happens mostly often when i move my laptop. but can also happen in a flash game on facebook or inside diablo 3. its very random.
i found a log file from the kernel panic. can somebody translate it for me? what are my options?

will my problem get sovled about moving my laptop with a SSD harddisk?
If your machine has a SSD, then your of course a bit more flexible when it comes to moving it while it's turned on.
However it's still a very fragile machine and really only designed to be placed down, lid opened and used.
Not used while it's on, the lid is open and dancing around the room with your headphones plugged in for instance like a iPod Touch or iPhone could be.
Laptops are not designed for such stresses of that sort of use, despite it having a SSD.
i have uninstalled all suspect software. do i need to remove more files?
Reboot the machine and see if your problem continues.
If it does, the do Steps 1-8 here and any further steps as required.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
sophos was my anti virus program, is there a good free vires protector for mac?
ClamXav is free, and what's good about it is it runs when you want, like a program, not all the time.
Mac malware is very rare, your more likely to get Windows malware that doesn't affect a Mac, so a occassional scan with ClamXav is usually all a Mac user really needs.
If Mac malware becomes more numerous, then sure a "always on" and "locked down" type anti-malware/protection may be required.

    Resolving Kernel Panics
Could be the case or cable - try a different cable.
If you are trying to use it with USB,  do you have a different interface to use like Firewire?
When you do have panic, you also have left your internal system with corrupt directory that now needs to be repaired.  Making and adding more problems.
Try boot  from OS X DVD and repair your system - go to Utilty menu => Disk Utility: Repair disk drive
    Get your system working. first.
Do you have backup from before this started? when or how did it begin?
What has happened to your external? able to repair the drive?
do you have a backup for it?
How is it formatted? what is it used for? TimeMachine? PC and Windows? other?

  • Very Odd Kernel Panic On Boot Up

I just today had a one-of-a-kind kernel panic on bootup from a completely shutdown machine. The box is a PowerMac G4, Mirrored Drive Door, dual-core 1.25 GHz, OS X 10.4.9, 512 MB factory installed RAM and 512 User-installed Ram for a total of 1GB. Have
Energized computer. Diverted attention. When I turned around to sit down and get to work, I was confronted with the following screen: There was the multi-lingual Kernel panic box on the gray screen, the "throbber" that usually rotates beneath the dark-gray Apple logo rotating away, and "overprinted" on all this was the "international no" symbol centered is a round-cornered translucent box (similar to what you see when you use the keyboard to alter the volume backing up the speaker icon), in the absolute center of the screen.
I powered down the computer and powered it up. Boot without a problem.
I then restarted the computer. Restarted flawlessly.
After using it for a little while, I did a full shut down and restart, used it for a little while, and shut down and restarted again. All these evolutions completed without failure or problems of any kind.
I've verified the startup disk successfully, SMART status is "Verified" for this hard disk, and have performed permissions repair successfully–with no indications of any permissions having to be repaired. All seems to be working normally and well.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I've Googled for this problem, and searched these forums, and have found nothing to compare to this.
For general edification, I've included the output of system.log for what looks like the time of the first failed boot and the boot immediately after. For the record, my two peripherals in constant use are a LaCie 60GB FW HD and a Wacom Intuos tablet, which is my primary somatic pointing device at this time–this log excerpt follows.
I cannot locate any report on this event in any kernel log. I also put the machine to sleep to check for kernel panic on wakeup from sleep (no problems there either). And the 512MB user-installed RAM is a Crucial memory module that has been in use for at least a year with no problems.
Thanks in advance for any insights.
    Sam Klein.

Well, there's the prob: this kernel panic did not leave a log report.
The last one before that was 17 Oct, 07; the last one before that was 26 Jan, 07.
I just don't seem to have a panic log for this event. The system log is the best I could come up with.

  • I had my very first Kernel Panic last night. Is it worrisome?

I sended the problem to Apple (Diagnostic report), and I never had a problem since. I heard it's a software issue, but I don't know much about it since this is my first time of having it after 3 months of having my 2014 MacBook Air. Does this happen to you guys?

Thankfully, I haven't had any Kernel Panics since last night. It only had one Kernel Panic, and it told me to restart it. After I restarted my MacBook Air, I haven't had a Kernel Panic since. I think it was only a software glitch. I'm not sure, though.

  • Can someone please help me? very  frequent kernel panics.

Hi i have a Power Mac G5 Quad 2.5 and it is allways freezing and has been since i bought it.
Can somebody see anything out of this?

    hey Old comm guy..
I have located the folder with the log files. Panic reporter ... right? i keep seeing that cpu 3 in the reports. would you like me to send you the documents sir? there are 27x 4 kb reports dating from 22 of april to yesterday..
    Best regards.

No need, that information is telling. Since it all is happening in CPU3, therein lies the problem. It could be a hiccup in on-chip cache memory or who knows what. Check out BD's response, which might eliminate the panics at the loss of a quarter of the machines processing capacity. That would be a good data point, anyway. It might be time to run the Apple Hardware test from your original install/restore Disk 1 and see if it finds anything. That would be described at page 55 of the user's guide. If something obvious is happening, it will show up there.
"If Apple Hardware Test detects a problem, it displays an error code. If Apple Hardware Test does not detect a hardware failure, the problem may be software-related." Not exactly correct, as no diagnostic can find all HW problems, even if you run it forever. In my much better compensated previous life, I worked with a couple of people who could write brutal diagnostic SW that really was effective in finding HW problems. Normal diagnostics perform a cursory function check most of the time, which turns out to be not so conclusive if the test passes. That's why things like memtest are available to go beyond the first level diagnostic capability.
User software in the aggregate is much better in finding "corner" case HW issues, usually at the most inopportune time.

  • Mac Book Pro - Rebooting and Kernel Panic

    Hi Everyone,
I hope that you're all well.
I've recently sold my iMac and purchased a Mac Book Pro Mid 2010 edition (i7, 8gig Ram, 500mb disk). It has Mountain Lion 10.8.4 installed.
and I am having problems with the machine and I hope that you might be able to help out.
My machine is doing repeatedly doing, what I have learnt is, a Kernel Panic which is incredibly frustrating.
When the system reboots it offers me the report below.
Would someone be kind enough to let me know what the issue with my machine might be.
    With thanks
    James

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. They should be more than willing to install a new logic board at no cost. I have no idea why this faulty GPU is making the headline here on the MacBook Pro forum so often now - could it be because Mountain Lion is just bringing the issue to a head more readily? I don't know - I only know that we're seeing more and more of these kernel panics of late.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Frequent kernel panics in World of Warcraft

Lately I've been getting very frequent kernel panics in World of Warcraft. I've also experienced longer than usual startup times. I re-installed the game and made sure all the patches were up to date, then, when the problem persisted, I did an Archive and Install of Tiger and patched that. I also repaired my permissions, and deleted WoW cache files and prefs. I ran Memtest, which found no problems, however, even in single-user mode, it only tested 868 MB of RAM when I have 1 GB installed. The latest panic log in the list looks like this

Any help you could provide would be very much appreciated!

Yeah, forgot to include the link for the Hardware Test.

Also, see if the kernel panics stop if you Safe Boot. Hold down Shift at the startup chime. It will take much longer than a regular boot, so give it time. You can let go of Shift when you see a progress bar loading. It will bring you to a login screen with Safe Boot in red letters.

  • Kernel Panic - Don't Know What From

I just experienced a very frustrating kernel panic, while I had a bunch of unsaved work open.
    I'm using Apple's current top-of-the-line MacBook Pro (15" retina display, 2.6 GHz), running OS X 10.9.2.
My work involved MS Excel and Powerpoint, as well as heavy Preview use. I think the other apps I had open at the time included Word, iTunes, Mail, Firefox, 1Password, and maybe Messages.
3rd party background software that I have running: Caffeine (wasn't activated at the time), Dropbox, Temperature Gauge Pro, and some Canon software for my all-in-one machine.
I've used Caffeine on my old 2009 17" MBP, as well as on this one since December, and it's never caused me any grief.
Dropbox is so ubiquitous that if it was causing people kernel panics, I'd expect to have heard about it by now, or that there'd been a software update to address it.
Temperature Gauge Pro is the least known of the 3 to me, but having said that, I've been running it for at least a couple of months now (same version all along), and it's never caused a problem.
Canon software hasn't caused me any issues over past several months that I've known about.
I've included the panic report, below. I'd be thankful for anyone's experienced opinion of what it says. (I Googled the "panic(cpu 7 caller 0xffffff80192a4f5a)" bit and got no hits, and then I searched for Preview causing panics, and didn't see much there either.)
    Thanks!!!

That panic occurred deep in the system. Fundamental System data structures were found to be corrupted.
    "VM_PAGE_QUEUES_REMOVE: unmarked page on Q"
The stuff in the backtrace doen't have any recognizable extensions in it that can be called out.
No third-party extensions added to the kernel.
The reason behind this one is likely to be:
    a) System Image is corrupted OR
    b) Memory errors

  • Kernel Panic on MBP running 10.6.8

    Hi all,
A friend is experiencing intermittent kernel panics on her MacBook Pro 15" running 10.6.8. I have checked the RAM on both Memtest and AHT both of which passed, repaired permissions and tested hard disk. Only peripheral is an Apple Cinema Display. I can't think of what else it could be so would appreciate the advice of a wise sage

The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • 10.4.8 Tiger-Wake From Sleep Kernel Panics

I've seen many discussions abound kernel panics and wake-from-sleep issues, but nothing exactly like mine.
    Most importantly, mine is a desktop Mac-PowerMac G4, 2 proc, 1.25 GHz.
We are experiencing persistent kernel panic and system crash problems, all of which happen when we try to bring the machine back up from sleep by tapping the keyboard and/or clicking the mouse.
    The system responses have included:
    • Hard drive and fan spinning up, but no mounting of any USB device (the ZIP 250 drive doesn't whir and the Studio Display remains dark
    • Machine wakes up but the display has what can only be described as "pieces" missing from it. Then the kernel panic display happens.
    • Mouse pointer moves but activates and affects nothing.
The very last kernel panic was intriguing. The machine woke up and appeared to be fine for a moment but there was the problem when 'chunks' were missing from the display image. Firefox, which had been running when the Mac went to sleep, crashed with no error message-it simply disappeared. Then the kernel panic screen happened. The report generated at restart was thus:

While I do have 1GB onboard memory it probably ought to be said that 512MB worth is a memory stick from Crucial that I installed about a week and a half before upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.4.6. I doubt it's the memory's fault in as much as that period of time was more than enough for the problem to crop up and it ran with no complaints whatsoever until I upgraded to Tiger.
I have also tried removing the ZIP 250 from the system; I have Adobe Version Cue CS2 running and had that turned off; various tips and tricks I found about too numerous to recount. So far the problem is proving intractable.
Does anyone have any idea of what I ought to try next?
    Much appreciation in advance,
    Sam Klein.
PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.25 GHz, Dual Processor, MDD, 1GB RAM

I recommend having both Alsoft DiskWarrior 3.0.3+ (DW3) and Micromat TechTool Pro version 4.1.x+ (TTP4).
While both can build a new, optimized directory for a disk, I have found there are some disks that only DW3 can repair. DW3 is a "specialist" in disk directories.
Likewise, TTP4 brings a host of useful hardware testing routines that are neither in DW3 nor the Apple Hardware Test. TTP4 also includes an excellent disk defragmenter. Defragmenting is generally not required under Mac OS X 10.3 or later unless you perform an extensive amount of video editing or your disk is nearing full, in which case it can be useful. See Mac OS X: About Disk Optimization. TTP4's Surface Scan is also useful in determining if a disk has developed bad sectors.
If you own neither utility today, the initial investment may seem like a good deal of money, but compared to your data and your time, the cost of these utilities is insignificant in the the long run. I've found their upgrades to be reasonably priced for what they do.
Neither utility is a substitute for a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution. But I've seen DW3 save more than one person's bacon and the suite of hardware tests and additional functions TTP4 bring to the table make both a worthwhile investment.
If you can only purchase one now, make it DW3. Add TTP4 when funds permit.
Better to have the tools and not need them, than to need them and not have them.
A good mechanic has more than one kind of wrench in their toolbox.
In some ways, you're lucky to have a PowerPC-based Mac: DW3 is not yet available for Intel-based Macs.
    Good luck!

  • Reaccuring kernel panics

My Mac Mini (mid 2010) started doing kernal panics/crashes, I thougth it was due to upgrade to ML because it started to crash regulary after that. All of the times it was due to entering sleep mode (or leaving hard ti tell ). So I disabled it in power settings and it worked fine until I installed first update to ML then it started crash more othen. So I desided to wipe everything out and reinstall an older version (Snow Lepard), but install constantly failing. Is it a hardware fauilure somewhere or what do you guys think?
The very last kernel panic dump I got was the following, if someone can read something out of it.

Thanks for the response, still think it's a hardware problem since i totally wiped out (erased the harddrive) the installation and reinstalling it from scratch, or accually trying since it always crash during installation. Maybe I could try using a usb keyboard/mouse instead of apples bluetooth keyboard/mouse. What do you think guys?
    May be worth a try.
Bye the way, is it possible to replace/repaire the bluetooth circuit on a Mac Mini?
All circuitry is soldered to the logic board.  So, any problem with
any particular chip would require replacing the logic board.  That
is the price of any compact designs these days.
To see if there is a hardware issue,  try running the Apple
Hardware Test (use  the wired keyboard/mouse).  The instructions
are on page 50 of the 2010 Mini user manual (if you don't have it
you can get a pdf here (http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Mac_mini_Mid2010_User_Guide.pdf).

Uninstall the software associated with this according to the developer's instructions. Often, kernel panics are caused by third party kernel extensions which are either deprecated or incompatible. Note that you should also have pairs of RAM modules installed, IE either (2x2GB or 2x4GB for your model). Non-pairs can make OSX unstable.

  • Kernel panic caused by Nvidia module?

Since kernel 3.6 I have often kernel panics, today I managed watch made this problem, I run on x server 6x glxgears and switch back to console, I got this:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/166 … 133329.jpg
I have tested my hardware with memtest86, hd tune on windows, no problems. And on win I run funmark for ~2h the GPU gets only 68C hot and runs stable. So it is a software problem, not a hardware issue. I have tested nvidia-beta, it is more stable but the problem still exist, just doesn't appear so often. My hardware:

Second I forget to add I am having problem with nvidia-settings too, after I boot system I can only run it once, when I closed it won't run again, just hangs and I can only kill it.

Hmm I am not 100% sure that nvidia module made this problem. I have attached a better panic screenshoot, now it doesn't show anything about nvidia:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/166 … 174954.jpg
Now I am testing kernel with acpi=noirq.

  • Journaling -- Kernel Panic?

    I have a question:
I recently updated my Mac to 10.4.5. After restart, I looked at DU and I saw that Journaling was turned off. Before 10.4.5, everytime I had used DiskWarrior....journaling was automatically turned off. So everytime i used DW.....I turned on journaling via DU and okay.....no problems at all.
Now.....right after having updated to 10.4.5 and I restarted my Pb.....I tried to turn on journaling....and I experienced my very first kernel panic. So I held down the power button and restarted my Pb. Then I opened DU again and turned on journaling once again......this time..no problems. Now....everytime I run DiskWarrior and try to turn on journaling again.....I get a kernel panic. But after having restarted and turning it back on again....no problems.
    What is causing this?
    Thank you in advance,
    Cheers
(I tried to run an Apple Hardware Test (ver.2.5?? is this right?) once and no problems were found)

    Hi, Stefan.
    1. What version of Disk Warrior are you using? Use only version 3.0.3 or later (3.0.3 is the latest) with Tiger.
    2. What does Disk Utility > Repair Disk report about the drive in question?
    3. Have you checked the SMART diagnostics of your hard drive? See: "Disk Utility 10.5 Help: Checking the S.M.A.R.T. status of your hard disk."
    4. See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
My FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
    Good luck!

  • Mountain lion kernel panic using wifi

I have a very repeatable kernel panic running the latest mountain lion build 10.8.1 (occured in 10.8.0 as well, but I couldn't trace it to a certain behavior yet)
    - enable Wifi, connects to home network (close, excellent connection)
    - start iTunes (latest), run music over Airplay (doesn't run well at all, i.e. stops after the 0.5s of music)
    - open airport utility => kernel panic, always a division error, always called by the atheros driver
    anyone experiencing a similar issue?
if I disable WiFi and do the same over ethernet -> no problem.
here the panic report excerpt .... reported to apple as well.
    thanks

You have far too many third-party system modifications. There's no way that setup is going to be stable.
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with a mirroring tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Preferably both. You must be certain that you can restore everything to the state it's in now.
Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup), and reinstall OS X. Test. If the problem is gone, you're done.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with networks that require any kind of authentication other than a WPA or WPA2 Personal password.
If the problem persists, boot into Recovery again, launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup volume with the default options. This operation will destroy all data on the volume, so you had be better be sure of your backups. Quit Disk Utility and install the OS again. When you reboot, you'll be prompted to go through the initial setup process. That’s when you import the data from one of your backups. For details of how this works, see here:
    Using Setup Assistant
Import only "Users" and "Settings" – not "Applications" or "Other files." Don't import the Guest account, if it was enabled on the old system. Test. If the problem is still there, you have a hardware fault. Take the machine to an Apple Store for diagnosis.
If the problem is resolved, reinstall your third-party software cautiously. Self-contained applications that install into the Applications folder by drag-and-drop or download from the App Store are safe. Anything that comes packaged as an installer or that prompts for an administrator password is suspect, and you must test thoroughly after reinstalling each such item to make sure you haven't restored the problem.
