Very simple java project (help please)

Hello. For a project I have to somehow use MouseListener to make something. My idea was to have a rectangle in which a circle (hockey puck) follows the user's mouse and whenever the user places the circle into a certain area the count goes up by one (like a game of hockey). If someone could give me some idea as to where I should start it would be greatly appreciated.
My thanks

This is alwyas [a good place to start|http://java.sun.com/developer/onlineTraining/] when you don't have a clue what's going on, and here if you need specifics on MouseListener. And to get movement, then you'll probably want to look here.
Once you have some code and specific questions, literally almost everyone on here will be willing to help you further along the way. When you post code, please use code tags.

    -im sure this is a simple error on my part. all im trying to do is run my first lil program that i saved in notepad, its only 5 lines long. here is the lil test program im trying to execute
    class HelloARP {
    public static void main (String[] arguments) {
    System.out.println("What's good ARP?");
    - all responses and help are welcomed. Thank you ahead of time for anyone that can help me get started.

    Hi
    First of all uninstall your current JDK installation, if you can get to the registry delete the registry entries for the old version of java which was there on your machine.
    Now do a fresh install of your j2sdk1.4.1, make sure that you will install the JRE with the J2SDK1.4.1.
    Once you are done, set your classpath in autoexec.bat if you are using Windows 95/98
    or set your environment variables if you are using Win NT/2000/XP.
    If using solaris or other unix flavors see the included installation instructions provided.
    Let me if you face the same problem.
    Thanks
    Swaraj

    after mixing a project i select bounce and burn the disc that is burned plays on any cd player but when i try to burn the wav or mp3 file that was created the resulting disc will only play in a computer this also happens with video projects help please are there any settings i need to alter as it seems the wav or mp3 file i ceated is being converted to a data file somewhere between the folder and disc drive

    Same thing for a movie file.. If you want to play back the movie via a DVD and a DVD player you must create a Movie DVD  and not just burn files to a data DVD... as Data DVDs are just storage devices for files and therefore will only work with computers...
    Movie DVDs are special formats that include things like menus and special file formats.. so they can playback via a DVD Player...
    You will need a 3rd party DVD Burning app like Toast which is what i actually use.... or the more popular DVD Creator app...to create and then burn a Movie DVD that will playback on a DVD Player....

  • Very Simple Problem-- Need help in method selection process

    Hello,
    It's difficult to explain the background of the program I am making-- but I am stuck at a very simple problem, that I can only solve with a very long block of if statements:
    I have 3 possible numbers-- 1, 2, or 3.
    Imagine two numbers are already taken-- say 1 and 2. I want a variable to set itself to the number that's not taken (3).
    So, again: If two numbers were taken say 2 or 3-- I want the variable to be sent to the other one that isn't taken-- 1.
    Thank you for your help,
    Evan.

    Actually, I'll just tell you the context of the program-- here is what I have so far:
    This program is meant to simulate Monty Hall Problem:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem
    The program sets up an array of three possible values. Each one of those values represents a door with either a goat or a car behind it. It then randomly sets one of those values to 1 (in order to represent a car as per the Monty Hall problem), and 0's represent goats.
    The user, which is simulated by the program (does not involve actual interaction), chooses a door initially.
    The game show hosts then reveals a door that is not the users initial choice, but IS a goat ( an array value of 0).
    For example if the array was [0][0][1]
    The user could pick door one (array position 0). Which is a goat.
    The game show host then reveals a goat that is not the users choice-- which would be array position 1.
    After the game show host reveals the goat-- I want the user to always switch his decision to the only other remaining door that was not his first choice.
    Then I wanted the computer to test to see if his final choice is the one with a car. And to tally up the amount of times he got it right.
    --Sorry that was long winded:
    import TerminalIO.*;//imports TerminalIO package for system.out.println
    import java.util.*;//import java.util for random
    public class Monty_Problem
         int doors[]= {0,0,0};
         Random rand= new Random();
         double wins,totals=0;
         public void carAssignment()
              int car_door= rand.nextInt(3);
              doors[car_door]=1;
         public int judgesChoice(int judgeDoor, int initialChoice)
              if(judgeDoor != initialChoice && doors[judgeDoor]!=1)
                   return judgeDoor;
              else
                   return judgesChoice(rand.nextInt(3), initialChoice); //infinite loop right here that I cannot remedy.  I want the program to have the judge pick a location that is not occupied by a  '1' and is not the user's choice.
         public void gamePlaySwitches()
              int initialChoice= rand.nextInt(3);
              int judgeDoor = 0;
              int secondChoice= 0;
              judgeDoor= judgesChoice(rand.nextInt(3), initialChoice);
              //This part is meant to have the user switch choices from his initial choice
                   // to the only other choice that hasn't been revealed by the judge.
              while(secondChoice == initialChoice || secondChoice== judgeDoor)
                   secondChoice++;
              if(doors[secondChoice]==1)
                   wins++;
                   totals++;
              else
                   totals++;
         public static void main(String [] args)//creates the main menu
              Monty_Problem a= new Monty_Problem();
              int games=0;
              while(games!=100)
                        a.carAssignment();
                        a.gamePlaySwitches();
                        games++;
              System.out.println(a.wins/a.totals);

  • Video stutter in very simple video project

    My very simple 20 minute travel video, made in iMovie 4.0.1, with less than 10 transitions and extracted audio clips, freezes, stutters, and is impossible to edit. It's my first project in this version of iMovie. I got the program, along with Quicktime 7.11, when I upgraded to OSX 10.3.9.
    I've posted before, and added RAM as recommended. Now my computer meets the specs for iMovie 4. It's used for very little else. No external hard drive, no bookmarks, and very few audio clips and transitions. Also tried downloading the updated Quicktime 7.13. Same problem.
    When I remove audio clips, stuttering is almost all gone.
    I would think this program would be able to handle such a simple project.
    Any advice you might have would be appreciated. Should I go back to earlier versions of the programs? Operating system? If so, how do I do that?

    Using old hardware with iMovie is a crapshoot, especially with QT 7. On my G4, I had to downgrade to QT 6.5.2 as someone else suggested. I also ran into the problem you did in trying to downgrade. Here is the solution that got me by:
    1. Download Pacifist (http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743). This will allow you to bypass the downgrade error you received in running the Reinstaller.
    2. First run the QT 7.0.1 Reinstaller (this is where Pacifist came in handy).
    NOTE: It may be hard to finder this Reinstaller. If you have problems, first try step 3 below using Pacifist, but if that does not work, I can find a way to get you the 7.0.1 Reinstaller.
    3. Next run the QT 6.5.2 Reinstaller.
    (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime652reinstallerforquicktime701.ht ml)
    That should allow your project to run smoothly again. Our machines video cards just don't do well with QT 7.
    NOTE: Some people don't have the problem we had. I believe our problems are made worse by incremental upgrades of QT.
    I hope this helps!

  • BB gone very slow ...help please

    I live in a rural area, am about 3 miles from the exchange, so I'm used to not having a fast service, however my speed often runs around 1.22Mb/s download and 0.38Mb/s upload. • Error when running a very simple java program

    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloWorldApp
    Exception in thread "main"
    Tool completed successfully
    I am getting the above error. I just downloaded java standard edition 1.4 sdk. I compiled the program with no errors. But when I run it . I get the above error. Is it something related to finding the package java.lang?
    Please let me know.
    Thanks.

    I have the same problem but in a different way. I download/installed jdk1.4 and J2me. I was able to run j2me without any problem following their tutorial.
    I set my config.sys to:
    PATH=C:\j2sdk1.4.0\bin;C:\j2me\j2me_cldc\bin;C:\j2me\midp1.0.3fcs\bin;
    I did compile and ran couple of programs with no problems at all, for some reason some of them give me error ex: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: NamofFile
    I read couple of posting about setting the CLASSPATH, is that maybe the source of the problem if so how I can do so given that Im using win2000. Any Ideas !!!

  • VERY slow download, need help please!

    Hello there, we recently moved house and have just had our internet and broadband activated, probobly 2-4 weeks ago, today i was downloading an update of my Xbox for a game, now bearing in mind i am directly connected through a wire to the homehub (BT HomeHub 3), it is a 2.07gb update, the first 75% went rather quickly(2-3 hours) i recently got home to find it was on 77%, this was an hour later, and 2 hours have passed now and it has only just reached 78%, which of my calculations are correct is less than 0.3KBS, which would put the completeion time around next week, i have tried unplugging the cable and restarting the HomeHub and nothing has worked(also whenever i do this the download skips back to 44% and spend 20 minutes befor jumping to 56% and then 40 mins befor going back to 78%. If anyone could help me i would be most gracious.

    welcome to the forum
    in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) BT Speedtester and post the results .
    are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
    Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
    Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • At a loss with some simple java classwork. Please help.

    Hello. I'm having a problem with some work that I wasn't able to finish in class. I am not very good at java AT ALL, and I'm really at a loss on how to finish up the program and get it to print what I want it to.
    My task is:
    "Write a program that asks for two words and then eliminates the second word from the first word.
    For example:
    forgot - go = fort
    bedevil - bed = evil
    bedevil - evil = bed
    stupid - is = Hey, is is not found in stupid."
    This is my code so far:
    public class wordSubtraction
         public static String big = "bedevil";
         public static String small = "bed";
         public static void main(String[] args)
              elimWord(String big, String small);
         public static void elimWord(String big, String small)
              if(big.indexof(small)==-1)
                   System.out.println(small + " isn't found in " + big);
              else
                   big.substring(0, indexOf(small));
                   small.substring(indexOf(small)+small.length());
                   System.out.println(small + " + " + small.substring + " = " + big);
    I keep getting this error:
    /Users/mewmew/Desktop/wordSubtraction.java:8: ')' expected
              elimWord(String big, String small);
                                    ^
    1 errorI don't understand what this error means or how to fix it, it looks like I have all the parenthesis in there to me. Deleting or adding semi-colins, parethesis, brackets, or curly brackets just seems to give me more errors.
    Any help is appreciated!

    No it's not JJEdit. The errors are a good thing -
    and each one has to be
    dealt with. When you call a String method various
    things have to be
    correct:
    (1) The name of the method - case is important.
    (2) The arguments - the things in the parentheses -
    have to be exactly
    the sort of thing that the method expects. For
    example if the method
    expects an int argument and you give it a String
    there will be problems
    (3) The methods must be called using a String
    variable and a dot. If
    you just say "substring(whatever)" that's an error.
    The compiler is
    saying "substring of what?" You have to write
    "something.substring(whatever)"
    Also - because it will be important later - both
    substring() and indexOf()
    return a value. It is up to you to do something with
    that value. Usually
    you assign it to a variable.
    Just for the record I got the follow from the String
    API doumentation here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/Stri
    ng.html
    public int indexOf(String str) Returns the index
    within this string of the
    first occurrence of the specified substring.
    public String substring(int beginIndex) Returns a new
    string that is a
    substring of this string. The substring begins with
    the character at the
    specified index and extends to the end of this
    string.
    public String substring(int beginIndex, int
    endIndex)Returns a new
    string that is a substring of this string. The
    substring begins at the
    specified beginIndex and extends to the character at
    index endIndex - 1.
    I would suggest you write elimWord() along these
    lines:public static void elimWord(String big,
    String small)
    int pos = // find the index of small in big
    if(pos == -1)
    System.out.println(small + " isn't found in "
    und in " + big);
    else
    String before = // find the bit before small
    re small in big
    String after = // find the bit after small in
    small in big
    System.out.println(big + " - " + small + " =
    ll + " = " + before + after);
    Thank you! That's very helpful and I feel that I'm THAT much more on my way to understanding what the heck I'm doing.
    I'm trying, though...
    Now I just gotta find out how to get the bits before and after small in big and solve these errors:
    /Users/audreyeckel/Desktop/wordSubtraction.java:24: '.class' expected
              int pos = big.substring(0, int indexOf(small));
                                                   ^
    /Users/audreyeckel/Desktop/wordSubtraction.java:24: ')' expected
              int pos = big.substring(0, int indexOf(small));
                                                                  ^
    2 errorsI just hope I can finish it before it gets TOO late...it's about 2:26 AM here and this is due...TODAY!

  • My simple file is uploading very slow..  help please..

    i have a SWF file - 220KB
    and the motions are simple too.
    whay the browser loading it so slow?!?  (5-10 sec.)
    (i checked on 7 computers)
    is anyone can check the FLA file please?
    it's very important..
    TNX

    What does that have to do with uploading a file?  If you are talking about downloading to one's browser to be viewed, if I look at the page you identified the Flash content loads almost immediately, even before the background image.  Chances are it is a service issue at your end as it has nothing to do with the Flash file.

Other than that, have fun!

  • Simple java applet help needed

    hi, im having trouble with an applet im developing for a project.
    i have developed an applet with asks the user for simple information( name,address and phone) through textfields, i wish for the applet to store this information in an array when an add button below the textfeilds is pressed.
    client array[];
    array=new client[];//needs to be an infinate array!
    I have created the client class with all the set and get methods plus constructors needed but i dont know how to take the text typed into the textfields by the user and store them in the array.
    i also need to save this info to a file and be able to load it back into the applet.
    Could some please help! Thank you for your time.

    Better maybe redefine the idea using an data structure :
    public class client{
    private char name[];
    private char address[];
    private int phone;
    public class vector_clients{
    private client vect[];
    // methods for vect[]
    What is your opinion about ???

  • Java mapping help please

    Hi all,
    I need help with java code please.
    My source is a csv file and target is multiple idocs.
    Source file structure is as follows:
    Header (field 1, field 2, ........ field 10)
    Item 1a (field 1, field 2, field 3, .........    field 180)
    Item 1b (field 1, field 2, field 3, .........    field 180)
    Item 2a (field 1, field 2, field 3, .........    field 180)
    Item 2b (field 1, field 2, field 3, .........    field 180)
    Item na (field 1, field 2, field 3, .........    field 180)
    Item nb (field 1, field 2, field 3, .........    field 180)
    First line is header. Second is VAT line. Third is Price line for that VAT. Now VAT and Price lines repeat. There need not be VAT line for non-European countries. So a VAT line may or may not preceed a Price line.
    For example: the lines can be like:
    Header
    VAT1
    Price1
    VAT2
    Price2
    Price3
    1) Now, it should produce 3 idocs like:
    Header, VAT1, Price1
    Header, VAT2, Price2
    Header, Price3
    2) One idoc should be created per a pair of VAT and Price lines and they will be identified by a co-relation of a particular field. So first I have to sort all the lines based on this field value. Then I have to read the lines in pairs. If no Vat line, I should just read the Price item and produce an idoc.
    Can you please help me with the java code for this?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Ramesh.

    Many thanks Ram.
    The reason for thinking to go for java mapping is that there is no keyfield for price line. The source file is a pipe delimited csv file. There is a keyfield for VAT line. The same field will be empty for the Price line. I am trying to ask them to at least provide a space for that field between the pipes for price line so that I can use in FCC. It looks like they can't modify the source file.
    Any inputs please?
    Regards.
    Ramesh.

    I was using Lion and iMovie 11 with the latest updates. My labtop is MBP 15'' mid-2010.
