Very slow indexing!!!

Hi,
First, we had loaded some 10 GB of documents into Oracle. Next we created an full text search index on this data.
After this we loaded 8 GB of more data and then used the
ALTER INDEX MY_INDEX REBUILD PARAMETERS('resume')
command.
I understand that this command will index the additional 8 GB of data, correct?
The issue is that it seems to be taking very very long
Yesterday afternoon (3:00pm) we used the select * from ctx_user_indexes and from that found that IDX_DOCID_COUNT was showing a value of 140609
Today morning (11:00am) we used the same sql and found that the IDX_DOCID_COUNT has moved up to 140649 - i.e. just 40 additional documents - and that in 12+ hours - which is very very slow!!!
Any ideas why this should be happening? We still have 20GB free space on the tablespace where the full text search index is created....
Can someone tell me what parameters we should look at to see why it is going so slow??

I don't know what's your knowlege in terms of Oracle Text but you should take a look at the Performance FAQ: http://otn.oracle.com/products/text/x/FAQs/imt_Perf_Faq.html. Describes you what you should do for updating text indexes.

Hi, my organisation is trialing the new RH10 multiscreen html 5 output.
Our techincal documentation includes a very large index (7000+ terms).
The index loads fine on a desktop (Chrome/FF -- under 5 seconds and IE8 -- over 10 seconds), however when we try to load the same index on a mobile device, it takes 2-5 minutes.
Is this a known issue?
Is there a way to fix it?
Suggested fix (if Robo devs are listening):
Create an option that outputs chunked index data in JSON format (currently XML) then parse JSON to the index tree loader for tree generation and search queries.

Concise problem statement:

1.Create an index with over 7000 terms.
2.Generate Mutliscreen HTML5 output.
3.Open Index in mobile browser (Safari/Android)
4.Wait for entire index to finish loading.
5.Refresh index page.
Results:Very slow loading (>3 minutes). Does not seem to cache index data.
Expected results:Loads in under 1 minute

Hi,
Is the mobile device connected via WiFi or 3G? What mobile device are you using and have you tried others?
I suspect the sheer size of the index is the problem. Even if it works fast, nn index with 7000 entries is not very usable on a mobile device.

Spotlight indexing very slow after upgrading to 10.7.5

SInce I have updating to 10.7.5, the spotlight indexing of my hard drive is very slow : only 40% has been performed in two days.
Does anyone have similar problems after upgrading to 10.7.5 and know how to fix them ?

You're not the only one. I've been re-indexing on and off for the last four days to no avail. I had to call Apple today and was put through to a senior technical advisor. After doing a data capture for them I was told that they should be able to come back with an answer within the next two days.
It's worth giving them a call to let them run through the clearing caches process with you if you haven't done that already. Remember that using your machine whilst it's indexing also slows the process down.
I will let you know when they come back with an answer but I hope by t would hahen both of our machines would have finished re-indexing by then...

Conversion of Characteristic Values to SIDs. Load Very slow

Hi Experts,
We have a slow load issue when loading from a Write-Optimized DSO into an InfoCube. 8 millon recs in 10 hours.
We check the start, end, and rules routines and every is ok but for all the package the load was very slow in the Conversion of Characteristic Values to SIDs.
Can any help me with this?

Hi,
It is because the SIDs Generation upon Activation flag is unchecked at DSO level .
One recommendation will be to switch on the property of the DSO SIDs Generation upon Activation flag .
Are there any secondary indexes also in DSO ?
You can try deleting them also during loading the data from DSO to cube .
Also load your master data first and activate it before loading it to cube.

Save Open dialog box opening very slow

I have windows 7 professional 64bit OS. whenever i try to open/save as dialog box it appears very slow, then it will say it is not responding then after 10-15sec it will come alive.

I followed your suggestions above....reset IE ...clean boot. Didn't solve the problem. (had trouble making that MSCONFIG window bigger !? <wink>)
Problem still exists. And to be clear, here is the problem(s) ...I believe they are all interrelated.
#1. I end the explorer.exe process and restart it. Run Explorer and start clicking folders in my FAVORITES. System hangs for about 10 seconds before it catches up.
Alternatly, after a explorer.exe restart, if I run explorer and start clicking down through folders from the C: drive, there is no hang.   SUSPECT - some sort of file for favorites needs to be rebuilt?!
#2. Open MS Word. Type a few letters. Select File/Save. Most icons under Favorites are white. Trying clicking more than one, but system hangs for ten seconds until icons fill in.
#3. WINDOWS button, start typing in the search INTERNET....5-10 seconds before Internet Explorer (and other INT* things show up.! Usually this is instantaneous.

- Rebuilt ICONCACHE - was 8mb, now less 450kb
- Archived OUTLOOK down to a reasonable size (and had to do the manual compress to reduce the file size after)
- turned off some Windows visual effects.
- Turned off Dropbox from autostarting....this was before I tried the Clean Boot
- turned by ON (default) in Startup - though it has Unknown MFG and no details :~(   , i found that it likely is needed for my 64 bit machine.
Any help would be appreciated.

Gmail performance is very slow in Firefox 4 and much slower when compared to performance in Firefox 3.6.x After clicking a button within the Gmail interface (e.g. refresh, opening an email, sending an email etc.) there is a noticeable wait time in Firefox 4. In Firefox 3.6 and actually in any/all previous versions of Firefox, this was not the case. Using same machine for Firefox 4 as I was for Firefox 3.x. Dell Inspiron Laptop E6400, Dual core Intel 2 GHz, 3.5 GB RAM, 80 GB free HDD space, 32-bit Windows XP SP3. Gmail is set to use HTTPS always.

Refer to your last posting, seems that you've created index which wouldn't help your query performance.
You need to create index from the field which supplied from your 'WHERE' condition. So if I follow your initial posting in this thread, your index should contains:
- BUKRS (which will be compared with your company variable)
- PRCTR (which will be compared with your s_prctr variable)
- GJAHR (which will be compared with your s_year variable)
- HKONT (which will be compared with your glcode value in your it_final[])
- BUDAT (which will be compared with your s_budat range/select option.
And to follow the BSIS field order, the above index field need to be arranged as follow
- BUKRS
- HKONT
- GJAHR
- BUDAT
- PRCTR

Try not to use 'INTO CORRESPONDING FIELDS' as it will increase table-memory overhead, but use 'INTO' and make sure the field list and internal table fields is in the same order.

Can anyone please provide some suggestions on my issue. I have implemented a combobox item using the plugin below and it was a very helpful plugin.

My issue is my data is very huge around 145k records and the page load is taking time and also the combobox is also very slow. I have a address field on which I have implemented the combobox plugin. My requirement is users login to the application and will search the application to find a particular customer account using the address. So the users once they login, they will directly start typing the address to find the customer account.
Please help, with any valuable suggestions to help improve the performance of the combobox item.

As you have more data in the table I guess you have set the Lazy Load to Yes.
you have to do explain plan on your LOV sql and see if you can add an index on the address column.

AIR 3.0 Application Built in HTML/Javascript VERY SLOW on Windows 7 and XP

Hello AIR Team,
The commercial AIR application I'm developing for a client (using HTML/CSS/Javascript) is VERY SLOW on my Windows 7 (64 bit) and Windows XP machines running on the Adobe AIR 3.0 runtime. I notice the poor performance in all aspects of the application, but especially on mouse events (mouseover, mouseout, click).
However, it runs very well on my Mac OS X 10.6.8 test machine AND from within Dreamweaver CS5.5 on my Windows 7 machine.
Chris Campbell from Adobe posted in another topic on this forum that he has notified the Adobe Webkit Team about this issue, but I'm anxious to know WHEN the Adobe AIR Team will release an AIR update/patch to resolve these performance issues.
Any ETA on the update/patch?

Mac mini 2010 very slow after update to Mavericks

My mac mini 2010 (2.4 Ghz, 8GB ram) is running really very slow after updating to Mavericks.
Clearly OneDrive is a pain... but had it running on ML as well, and though it is a memory and CPU hog, it never really slowed down the system.

Chances are you have applications that are out of date and need to be updated. Another possibility is Spotlight is indexing and you to wait until it has finished.

Very Slow Query due to Bitmap Conversion

I have a strange problem with the performance of a spatial query. If I perform a 'SELECT non_geom_column FROM my_table WHERE complicated_join_query' the result comes back sub-second. However, when I replace the column selected with geometry and perform 'SELECT geom_column FROM my_table WHERE same_complicated_join_query' the response takes over a minute.
The issue is that in the second case, despite the identical where clause, the explain plan is significantly different. In the 'select geom_column' query there is a BITMAP CONVERSION (TO ROWIDS) which accounts for all of the extra time, where as in the 'select other_column' query that conversion is replaced with TABLE ACCESS (BY INDEX ROWID) which is near instant.
I have tried putting in some hints, although I do not have much experience with hints, and have also tried nesting the query in various sub-selects. Whatever I try I can not persuade the explain plan to drop the bitmap conversion when I select the geometry column. The full query and an explanation of that query are below. I have run out of things to try, so any help or suggestions at all would be much appreciated.

My application allows users to select geometries from a map image through clicking, dragging a box and various other means. The image is then refreshed - highlighting geometries based on the query with which I am having trouble. The user is then able to deselect any of those highlighted geometries, or append others with additional clicks or dragged selections.
If there are 2 (or any even number of) clicks within the same geometry then that geometry is deselected. Alternatively the geometry could have been selected through an intersection with a dragged box, and then clicked in to deselect - again an even number of selections. Any odd number of selections (i.e. selecting, deselecting, then selecting again) would result in the geometry being selected.
The application can not know if the multiple user clicks are in the same geometry, as it simply has an image to work with, so all it does is pass all the clicks so far to the database to deal with.
My query therefore does each spatial point or rectangle query in turn and then appends the unique key for the rows each returned to a list. After performing all of the queries it groups the list by the key and the groups with an odd total are 'selected'. To do this logic in a single where clause I have ended up with nested select statements that are joined with union all commands.
The query is therefore..

Thanks for the reply. After a lot more googling- it turns out this is a general Oracle problem and is not solely related to use of the GEOMETRY column. It seems that sometimes, the Oracle optimiser makes an arbitrary decision to do bitmap conversion. No amount of hints will get it to change its mind !
One person reported a similarly negative change after table statistic collection had run.
Why changing the columns being retrieved should change the execution path, I do not know.
We have a numeric primary key which is always set to a positive value. When I added "AND primary_key_column > 0" (a pretty pointless clause) the optimiser changed the way it works and we got it working fast again.

Bt Infinity New contract started Very Very Slow in...

Hi Just wondered if anyone can give any help.
Ive swapped to BT Infinity in the last week but my evening connection is very slow.
If I check speed in the morning it will be at 37/38 Mbps. After 4pm of an evening speed drops to 3-6 Mbps.
Ive cotacted the Indian contacts but they havent helped really. Ive tried a wired ethernet cable and this makes no difference.
Can any one tell me if you can get out of the contract if within 28 days.?

I'm in Ulverston too. This has been an ongoing problem since the beginning of December, feel free to run the speed tests, but thats not going to get this problem respoved.
There appears to be a problem with the Dalton in Furness exchange which is the parent exchange for Ulverston, Barrow in Furness and the surrounding area. Quoting PlusNet: "The cause of the speed problem affecting the Dalton-in-Furness exchange and surrounding areas has been identified and a fix is being planned however there were problems (it needed some new backhaul capacity out of the exchange but the new fibres were dead on arrival) so there's no ETA yet."
People on different ISPs have the same problem, I'm on Zen Internet, and its also been reported on the PlusNet forums too, see the following posts:

Looks like its up to BT Wholesale to sort out the Dalton exchange as it isn't fit for purpose now they are rolling out fibre in the area.
I do find it strange that BT don't hae a method to monitor the performance of the exchanges, but instead rely on the community to highlight / track down the fault.

New T61 TP running very slow

New to this board, so patience please!
3 weeks ago purchased a new T61 w/2.0GHz Intel duo core, 2 GB RAM and a 150GB HDD. Running XP Pro. Like the weight and feel but the performance is very, very slow. Takes 3-5 minutes to boot and when toggling between programs (ie: Outlook to Excel to IE) takes 30 sec - 1 minute to switch.
Have run "services.msc" and note there are 60+ services running! Anyone know why so many are running and which are non-essential? Have also disabled most of start-up options via msconfig. Still running very slow.
My former Asus W7 was much faster (but the battery life was very poor. And not nearly as rugged as the Lenova).
Any help much appreciated. Need speed!

Newer ThinkPads are coming with loads of stuff you don't need: Trials for Office 2007, Picassa, and a plethora of other tools you may or may not need ALL with auto updates turned on and ALL trying to update at the same time when you start.
So the second thing to do once indexing is complete is to look through Add Remove Programs, and uninstall what you do not need. For example, I did not need:
Office 2007 Trial (I use Office 2003)
Picassa (I don't need it)
Symantec Trial License (Good product, but I have a Corp. license)
CSS (disable)
ThinkVantage Updater (A tool that has NEVER worked properly)
Further, I turned off (prevented from starting) a number of things like Sonic update, and then turned off the update functions in a number of other tools (SUN Java, Adobe, Windows Auto Update, and so on). Automatic updates can really slow down a machine.
Also, in Internet Explorer, reduce (by 75 percent or more) the amount of cache it sets aside for temporary files. Once that was all done, the T60 I was working on starts reasonable quickly (as fast as needed) and performs very well.
