Very slow initComponents calls?

Hi there,
I've been noticing sluggishness in my application that seems more extreme than I believe it should be. When I profile the application, I get huge hot spots inside the initComponents() functions generated by NetBeans for the layout. The two biggest hotspots that show up in the profiling are both calls to initComponents. My main FrameView's initComponents call takes 167ms, and a subsequent JPanel that I create to add as a tab in the view takes a whopping 221ms for its initComponents call. I'm at a bit of a loss to explain why these operations take so long.
The function is basically a bunch of object instantiations (JComboBoxes, JLabels, JTextFields, etc.), and then the GroupLayout calls to place them. I've tried removing custom models that I have for some components and saw no speed increase. The profiler won't tell me the timing within the functions themselves, so all I know is that initComponents is taking a really long time to complete. Are there any classic mistakes I could be making? I can't really do much in the function because it's autogenerated by NetBeans. I don't feel that I have an unreasonable amount of controls anywhere (maybe a total of 40 or so), but the performance is still pretty terrible. There's a very noticeable delay between when I click a button and when the JPanel appears as a tab. I realize I can alternatively create the JPanels on startup and just hide/show them, but I just wanted more information about what could be taking so long.
Thanks!

Hi and Welcome to the Community! Has it always been this way? Or has something recently changed and then the behavior started? An OS update perhaps? Further, what OS are you running please? There are some OS levels that have reports of this problem, but it seems to be cured in more recent versions. But, we can't guess unless you reveal your OS. Let us know.

  • Very slow subvi call (~10 seconds)

    I have a main VI in a large application which calls a subVI.  I'm finding that the main VI tends to hang up, and I've traced the problem back to this one subVI.  I was using probes to check timing.  What I found was that timestamp on a probe for the error cluster leading into the subvi and the timestamp for a probe on the error input inside the subVI were about 10 seconds apart.  So in the sample image below, probe 2 inside the subvi has a timestamp 10 seconds after probe 1 on the main vi.  The subvi is inside a case structure in the main vi, so it doesn't seem like there's opportunity for poor dataflow/race conditions.  I can't find other instances of the subvi that could be blocking this one, the run time for the subvi (aside from this overhead time) is under 100 ms, and enabling reentrancy on the subvi doesn't fix the problem. Further complicating matters, this used to work correctly (100 ms per call) and this problem developed overnight with no changes to the code.  I've played around a little with inlining and execution priority, but I would not generally expect that either of those could make a difference of 10 seconds for a single subvi call.  What's going on here?

    Highlight execution is off, and the problem happens whether the subvi front panel is open or closed.  As for the "stuff" it's all VISA calls to automate a piece of test equipment.  But the "stuff" seems to be running at normal speed; if I put a probe on the other side of the Error Case Structure in the subvi, it has the same timestamp as probe #2.  That was why I left it out, because it seems like something is happening before I even get to anything that should be executing inside the subvi.  The case structure in the main vi is just as simple as is shown here, although there's a little bit more going on to come up with the boolean wired to the selector.  The subvi is all by itself in the case structure, and I'm putting the probe inside the case structure, so it seems like there shouldn't be a lot of other stuff going on at that level to impact the timing, I think.

  • Upgraded to 4.5 and now it is very slow answering call

    hi I updated to 4.5 OS on my 8330 and now when someone calls it takes about 3 seconds after pressing the answer button for it to connect to the other person. Is there a fix for this? Thanks.

    did you upgrade to 4.5 with a media card installed? If so, pull the media card out.
    make a manual backup
    reinstall the 4.5 software without doing an auto backup and restore.
    test your device at that point... if it works... you have a few options
    restore full backup and test to see if it still works right
    or
    load into advanced restore and do a selective restore, only restoring your most important databases
    if this all works fine... put your media card back in

  • After ICS upgrade Phone is very slow to make a call

    After ICS upgrade , when I select a contact to call , and then press cell or home , the response time is very slow.
    I have pressed the call button more than once thinking it did not take. Then when it does take I end up calling the person
    more than once because it has buffered the calls . What can be causing this ?
    If you have an answer Please email me at: Personal email address removed to comply with VZW ToS<     Thanks

    Mine and my wifes thunderbolts have become horrible since the upgrade was pushed.  Apps are slow, or don't even load some times.  Trying to make a phone call is sluggish and at times it will try to call twice at the same time for some reason.
    however, i overlooked all of this because i liked the look of ICS.  then last week after being pushed two updates in a row, it now will just turn off at random times.  i can't even go to a webpage anymore because it will immediately crash.  better yet, when i try to reboot the phone, it will get to the point where it recognizes the verizon network, and then just shut off again.  this happened to me 8 times in a row the other day.  it will also say that the battery is in the red, even though it had a full charge before the crash.
    i have found that if i plug my phone in and then boot it up, it will boot up correctly.  that is the only way i have been able to get it to actually boot up since all of this started happening.  it will still show the battery is about to die, and then about 15 minutes later it will show it is at 100% again.
    i tried to do the chat with a reprensentative today and the guy was asking for my account password before he could look into my issue.  what kind of company asks for a password.  that is the dumbest thing i have seen.  so now, i have a phone that "sometimes" works, and online chat that reminds me of a scamming site.
    when my wife called to talk to someone they told her that it was htc's fault and that it would cost us $60 each to switch to new phones.  how is that customer service?  besides, verizon's network sent the update.  there is no way that they can try to say it wasn't their fault.  that isn't how the real world works.
    i have reposted this from another thread, but since there seems to be someone from VZW reading this, perhaps some info can be found...

    wadams5641,
    Let's add some speed to your service and ensure you can make calls without the
    delay. When was the last time you turned off your phone? Is the software up to
    date?

  • Simple Soap Test, VERY SLOW with XP, only 5 calls per second !

    Hello,
    I'm just starting developing a web service. My first test shows a very slow performance of only about 5 calls per second:
    Windows XP client localhost -> Windows XP server: 2000 calls per second
    Windows XP client in VM on server maschine -> Windows XP server: 4,5 calls per second
    Windows XP client over 100 MBit LAN -> Windows XP server: 2000 calls per second: 4,5 calls per second
    Windows XP client over 1000 MBit LAN -> Windows XP server: 2000 calls per second: 4,5 calls per second
    So you might think, that is it, but - using identical jars:
    Mac OS X, 10.6 client -> Windows XP server: 880 calls per second
    Windows XP client -> Mac OS X 10.6 server: 4,5 calls per second
    So the problem seems to be the client setup on an Windows XP system.
    This is the service code:
    package net.metasafe.soapbenchmark.server;
    import javax.jws.WebMethod;
    import javax.jws.WebService;

              return a / b;

              System.out.println("Calls per second: " + (num * 1000.0f / t));
              System.out.println("Done");
         }Any idea, why this is so slow, if the client runs on an Windwos XP (Pro) system ?
    Is there anything I have to be aware of when choosing the QName ?
    Best regards

    Hi,
    i've resolved problem 46029, but it remains loop problem in Oracle Bi Administration Tool. In addition, if in Answers I click on "Create Direct Request" I have results immediately. Otherwise if I submit a query on "Settings->Administration->Issue SQL, system goes in loop as in Administration Tool. At this point a begin to think that problem is at AWM creation cube step. In your opinion? What about your opinion? What other checks can I do, to resolve the situation?
    P.S. If I submit the same query given from NQSQuery.log under SQL PLUS, it goes in loop.
    P.S.2. I've tried all on a smaller cube. "Update Row Count" or "Retrieve Data" in Administration Tool now responds in acceptable time. I've deployed cube in Answers, and even in it , query returns in acceptable time. But it's a very small cube. For larger cubes situation is that explained. However, in this way, i think i can exclude all previous problems as cause of my issue. What do you think? However the problem remains. What can i do?
    My trouble is that I have still deployed a month ago a cube which responds in two seconds even to complex queries :-). Since that moment, performance has been always worst. The only change i've made has been of execute procedure to have multiple catalogs (and rpds) on same machine...
    Thanks

  • Very slow GUI in web browser application

    Hello,
    I am trying to write a web browser application and I have a problem with the GUI. When the page is being loaded and set on the JEditorPane the GUI becomes very slow (actually it freezes). I don't know if this happens because of my swing implementation or because I am not using threads properly.
    I use the SwingWorker class. I created a worker thread which loads the web page and then sets it to the JEditorPane.
    Could you give me some ideas please? Below are some parts of my code.
    Thank you

  • Mac Mini boots very slow with Mavericks (after security update)

    Hi,
    my Mac Mini boots very slow after I've installed Maveriks. I did two clean installs by now, seemed to work OK after the second one but after the latest safety update (2014-002) the boot time is up to 5+ minutes. Starting Safari or other software takes addtional time. See below for system specs, Etrecheck and log. Any ideas what could cause this? According to the update history I did install the security update 2014-002 twice on the same day although I cannot remember doing such a thing.
    Thanks Joerg

  • Snow Leopard - very slow restart / reboot and Boot Camp restart fail

    Hi
    After Snow Leopard installation on my Macbook Pro I have a very slow restart. I logged this immediately after install and waited till 10.6.1 was issued and installed but still have the same problems. Hope some one can help.
    For an normal restart or reboot I have the grey screen for about 25 secs and then the blue screen hangs for about 2 mins 30 secs before loading desktop. This is longer than Leopard and clearly not what Snow Leopard is meant to be. I have installed on an iMac as well and can see the new normal fast boot.
    I also have Windows on it's own partition and use in Boot Camp. I have used this successfully under Leopard.
    When I restart from Windows using the Start button and restart, Windows shuts down and then the mac starts up but gets stuck indefinitely on the blue screen. I have waited up to 25 mins then forced a shut down.
    However if I restart from Windows using the Boot Camp icon in the taskbar and choose the restart from MacOSX it shuts down windows and restarts the mac in record time!! about 25 secs grey screen and 25 secs blue screen. I can't get this in normal mac mode! - Bizarre.
    I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, run Tech Tool, Onyx, reset PRAM, deleted startup items plists and removed startup items from System Preferences Account.
    I have monitored the Console app for all the startup conditions noted above and will post below. In the logs of the normal mac reboot you can see something to do with Security Agent taking over 2 mins to load. Maybe that is a clue, but I don't understand these messages. Please note that the iStatsmenu app was installed after snow leopard and I had these slow startups before it's installation.
    If anyone technical can understand what the **** is going on here I would really appreciate your feedback.
    Regards
    Eric

    Hi guys
    Thanks for your contributions. I have made little progress on this issue since posting.
    Just as added info, I did a re-install of Snow leopard from install DVD and upgrade again to 10.6.1 and no change to the startup behaviours. Same pattern as before, although the first restart was fast and probably how it is meant to be, then the slow ones reappeared.
    I also had a thought that somehow it may be related to the nominated startup disk. There were posts on other boards about similar issues with Leopard where the hanging start was found to be related to the computer not knowing which startup disk to use. I thought maybe as it works when using the boot camp icon from Windows but not the restart button, it may be related, but in OSX and Windows both are set to startup in OSX on HD. So no further joy.
    Maybe someone else will come along who can understand the Console logs. Why does the loginwindow and Security Agent take so long?
    Do you guys have any clues from your Console system logs? Does yours hang on loginwindow?
    The fact that there are so few people with the same problem suggests to me that there is a third party device/preference/ hidden file somewhere that is having an effect and it's not an Apple issue.
    I am getting close to wiping the hard drive and starting again....but live in hope.
    Cheers

  • MacBook Pro running very slow over 1 hour to boot up

    I was out of the country on a trip and my daughter's MBP (15" early 2011) refused to boot. It was stuck on the gray screen with the rotating gear. She made an appointment at the genius bar and they told her basically the computer was dead in the water due to a crashed hard drive and she should contact a data recovery service to recover her personal data then come back and they will install a new hgard drive and get her up and running. After I returned I removed the hard drive and took it to the IT department at my company. A tech there was able to access the drive via a USB/SATA cable and  copy the contents to an external hard drive. He ran HD Tune on the drive and found no errors. I re-nstalled the drive and it still had the same problem. I am more of a Windows guy myself so I'm not 100% confident of my Mac/OSX skills. Obviously the genius at the genius bar wasn't exactly right since as you will see if he simply tried a safe boot he would have been able to gain access to the computer. But following is what I have already done.
    1). I was able to boot into safe boot mode(Shift key during boot process). Under Safe mode I was able to log in under a Guest account. I could not successfully log in under her user account. Under the Guest Account I ran Disk utility and verified and reset preferences as I read somewhere this could be an issue. It found many issues (I would guess around 100). I also ran the verify disk and disk repair (or wahatever it is called). Disk Utility informed my that I had to reboot into repair mode (Command & R) and run DIsk Utility in that mode.
    2). Rebooted into Repair Mode (Command & R). It took a while for the spinning globe to get rid of the triangle with the exclamation point but eventually I was in the Internet Repair Feature (Or whatever it is called). I ran Disk Utility and did a repair. It found system file errors and reported back that they were repaired. Wihile in Repair mode I looked under the "restore" tab and noticed that OSX Lion was shown. But in the computer's "About this Mac" it shows OSX 10.9. My daughter confirmed that she had previously updated the OS twice via the App Store so I guess that is why Lion shows under the restore tab.
    3). I did a reboot to reset PRAM/NVRAM hoping that would assist as well as I had seen some entries that this was a good thing to do with very slow response problems.
    4). I rebooted and waited. After about 20 minutes the log in screen came up and I log in under her user account. About 30 minutes later most of the desktop had loaded. About an hour and a half into the boot I was able to navigate the desktop but the was at least a 2 second delay between clicking on something and it acting. Often I had the spinning "rainbow wheel", "beach ball", "umbrella" or whatever your preference is.
    So bottom line is I am no longer stuck on the gray screen but the computer is totally unusable. I'm not sure what my next step should be. SHould I restore the OS to Lion via the Command & R procedure? If I do that then will she be able to reload 10.9 Mavericks again via download?
    If she has a friend with a MBP already running Mavericks can she make a USB boot drive on that machine to repair/replace her existing OSX installation?
    Should I just reformat the hard drive and start fresh since something isn't making the MBR happy?
    Also under disk utility the SMART report shows the drive as healthy.
    Here are the basic specs of the machine as is:
    OSX 10.9 (13A603)
    8GB Ram 1333 NHz DDR3
    Hard Drive: 499Gb total/263GB available
    Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

    LPBassman,
    since the tech in your IT department was able to copy your daughter’s data from her MacBook Pro’s internal disk, I’d suggest completely erasing the internal disk (using Disk Utility in Recovery mode, reformatting it with a “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” filesystem), reïnstalling its original version of Mac OS X (either Snow Leopard from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD if it originally came with two grey DVDs, or Lion via OS X Internet Recovery if no grey DVDs originally came with it), running Software Update to get it to 10.6.8 or 10.7.5 respectively, reïnstalling Mavericks, running Software Update again to get it up to date, and finally restoring your daughter’s data.

    I bougnt my S5 a month ago and I am having two major issues.  The screen is very slow to respond.  When the screen is dark and I press the home button, it doesn't come on.  I have to press the button anywhere from 4-10 times and then it usually flashes on and back off.  It is very, very frustrating.  The other issue is that the battery drains very quickly.  I have called Verizon numerous times regarding these issues.  They tell me to do different things that never help.  We eventually did a factory reset and it still has the same issues.  Help!  It is a brand new phone and unfortunately I am in a new two year contract.  Ugh. Is there anyone out there who can help me?

    I have done that several times.  In fact, every time I call Verizon with my phone problems, they have me do the same things repeatedly.  I keep telling them I have already done them but they insist they are SURE it will work this time.  It never does.  After doing the factory reset and it still not working correctly, they act like they are confused, almost like I am lying.  I did what you suggested above on the slim chance it would work this time but it did not.  I bought two S5's that day and the other one works perfectly fine.  I know I got a bad phone.  Verizon just does not listen.  It is a bad phone.  I just want a new phone that works properly.  Is that too much to ask?  I bought a new phone that has been bad from day one.  Why oh why do I have to spend hours of my time on the phone, in the store, on the computer, trying to rectify this?  It shouldn't be this difficult!  Help please!!!
