Very slow wifi connection on my MBP

I'm having problems with my wifi connection on my MBP. My iPad, iPhone and iPod all work absolutely fine but for some reason I have a very slow connection on the MBP. If I connect it to the router with a wire it's fine so it's definitely the wifi.
The only other thing that's changed recently is our Internet package. But this hasn't effected any of my other devices and we actually upgraded our package so I think that's coincidental.
Is it a known problem with MBPs? Should I take it to the genius bar or is there a simple solution.
Thanks in advance

thanks for the tip. unfortunately, removing the security from the router isn't an option as it isn't even my router (my roommate owns it and would never allow that to happen).
the thing that is perplexing is that it hasn't always been slow - this just started happening within the last two weeks. one could assume that if one computer experiences a slow internet connection, the other would as well if they are both going through the same router. secondly, the connection strength, despite it being slow, is at the maximum. finally, if i connect to any other network at school or coffee shop, the connection is fast. there's obviouly something specific to my MBP and the router that the computer doesn't like, which is causing the lag.
maybe my MBP doesn't like the channel that the router is set to. i'll look into getting it switched as it may be the root of the problem.

  • RV220W: Very slow wifi connection???!!!

I'm an IT professional with more than 10 years experience. I have spent last 5 days trying to figure out why the wifi connection to this router is so slow, but still no luck. I'm getting only 13Mbps even if my laptop is next to the router! (wired connection worked ok)
I have tried all sort of setting combinations, 2.4GHz/5GHz; N only/ G,N Mixed;  Auto/20MHz bandwidth; different channels; WPA2 encrypted vs open; disable firewall; wmm enabled/disabled; 1.0.0.26/1.0.1.0 firmware... no matter what I try, I always get only 10 - 15Mbps speed.
Once I replace this router with my old router, it worked perfectly --- getting 70 - 80Mbps with exactly the same testing environment and configuration.
I really expect this router to offer much faster wireless speed according to this review:

  • AirPort Time Capsule (firmware v7.7.3) has slow wifi connection to new Surface Pro 3

I got a new Surface Pro 3 i7. I have all the updates for it. I ran into a problem that many others also ran into which was very slow WiFi performance. I utilized many troubleshooting methods and sources and I am currently inclined to believe this... the new Marvell AVASTAR Wireless-AC Network Controller drivers are not compatible with my Airport Time Capsule firmware version 7.7.3.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Is there another firmware version that works (older or newer)?
    Details:
I tried all kinds of things, like changing the network drivers on the SP3 to many different versions. Many of the help forums recommended using the drivers dated 4/24/2014. This did seem to help, but not reliably. What I discovered is... if I connect using the SP3 WiFi to my network extension Airport Express on version 7.6.4, I reliably get 20-22 mbps (which is the best I can expect from my network and works great for my needs). But, when I connect to my primary network Airport Time Capsule, the best I can get is 1.5 mbps, but usually between .15 and .9 mbps. It's completely unusable in today's internet environment. At the same time, I used my iPhone and the Airport Utility to verify the connections.  I used SpeedTest.net on my MacBook, iPad, iPhone and Win8.1 HP laptop to verify that every other device was getting the 20+mbps. And they did.  Only the Surface Pro 3 couldn't perform when using WiFi through the Airport Time Capsule. The SP3 does achieve 20+ mbps like all my other devices, but only when connected to the Airport Express.
The articles I read said that the network drivers on the SP3 seem to require the routers to be updated to the latest versions. Both the Airport Time Capsule and the Airport Express seem to be updated. When I go into their settings using the Airport Utility, there are no updates available.
Of course this problem isn't replicated at the Microsoft store since they don't have apple routers.  So, their response is to upgrade the routers.  Extremely unhelpful when the Apple software is saying it is upgraded already. I can't believe this new Airport Time Capsule has to be retired because it isn't playing well with others, and I love the automatic backup it is providing for my MacBook. So, somehow, I need the Airport Time Capsule to work with the new WiFi card & drivers on my SP3, just like the SP3 is working properly with the Airport Express.

    Thanks for your input!
    1. No downgrade. Bummer, but understandable.
    2. Completely agree!!! I did too and then I had to redo it because I couldn't install a driver. I had to start all over and reinstall Win 8 then Win 8.1 over it. It was a colossal waste of time and endless frustration. If I can just get it modestly working, I'll take it. It doesn't have to be perfect right now.
    3.  Great suggestion! And the Microsoft forums are also a buzz. One suggestion I tried (and it seems to be working) is to set a separate wireless network name for the 5ghz band. I haven't thoroughly tested it yet, but I'm hopeful.  I t seems to have worked for some, but not others. The next thing I'll try is fixing the channel, but strangely, I didn't see that option in the AirPort Utility app on my iPhone. Is it only available through Mac/PC laptop/desktop software?
    4. Yup. Sigh. I actually have an old linksys. I retired it when I went 100% apple. I was hoping that things would work smoother. And they did! Until this SP3 came into my life. Arg.
And and a few more details...
the AirPort Time Capsule is 802.11ac
the AirPort Express is 802.11n (2nd gen)
I'm wondering if it is the AC connection that is the issue. Maybe since the Express always connects with n, it is OK....
Nope. Just tested the SP3 again and it is maintaining it's connection to the AirPort Time Capsule utiling the 802.11a/n/ac mode and connecting to the 5Ghz special network name. So far so good... Fingers crossed...

  • 5s on 8.0.2 Slow WiFi Connection - worth a try

I've been suffering from slow WiFi connection since I updated from iOS 7 to 8.0.2 and it got worse after updating a game (CoC). Its taking ages to load the game, download any app from app store, or any internet related task. Anyway, my WiFi issue is fixed and just want to share this workaround to help other people who is suffering and very much frustrated out there, like I was.
Go to SETTING - GENERAL - RESET - RESET NETWORK SETTINGS.
    WARNING!!!
Doing the above will reset all your network settings including network passwords
    Disclaimer
I'm not responsible for any damage/loss it may cause to you or your phone. Do at your own risk

I have all the same problems. I have a 5S. What I have found that if I reset network settings or power off/on - wifi will work for 5-10 mins, then go back to a crawl.  BTW I am on IOS 8.1. Same issues
    I tried:
    -resetting network settings
-hard reset (home and lock button)
    -Reset everything
    -Restore Iphone (IOS 8.01/8.02/8.1)
    -Restored iphone from new
    -Turned off wifi networking
-Went to Genius bar and they gave me a new phone, it worked for a few days, then back to this.
It is a software issue. Because every other device works just fine on wifi (iphone 4, ipad, laptop, desktop)
I will be calling apple support again later to see what they will say.  It is funny how Apple won't admit to known issues until a fix comes out.

  • Im having a very slow internet connection on my macbook pro??help pls

I have one router at my home. my other PC works fine with the Internet even my iphone 4s is way faster with same wifi connection. when I download a TV show on macbook from itunes its takes about 40-50 min to download fully but on my phone or PC it usually takes about 18 mins. and also when I try to watch a hd clip on youtube, I need to put on lowest quality in order to watch it without lagging or stopping midway.
does anyone else have this issue or I have to talk crap about apple product from now on???

Hold down the option key and select the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar. What values are shown for the following?

Any news on ios 8.0.3 update? Been waiting for it coz of my slow wifi connection after i updated my iphone 5s to ios 8.

I have heard rumours of an 8.1 update for developers. I just found another bug in 10.9.5. I am beginning to think that nobody should touch any update from Apple until they can get their very serious Q/A problems sorted out. This is getting bad.

  • New imac 27(Intel based, bought 2013) slow wifi connection with my Verizon fios actiontec router. All other wireless devices in the house(ipad 3gen,MacBook Air ,hp laptop) have a much faster connection. Should I change router settings to G only, etc

New imac 27(Intel based, bought 2013) slow wifi connection with my Verizon fios actiontec router. All other wireless devices in the house(ipad 3gen,MacBook Air ,hp laptop) have a much faster connection. Should I change router settings to G only, switch channel from auto to maybe 6,channel width to 20mhz? Already changed security settings to WPA2.  Currently router is running in mixed b and g mode.

If you have one computer running on G they will all run on G. All ROUTERS are backward compatible, in otherwords if you have a group of computers and all of them are N compatible and one or two are G They will all work but the N computers will run at N and those that are G will run at G speed not N.
It can get confusing but really it is simple. The newest is 802.11 AC and ic used with the newest Mac Computers made available in November 2013. So if you have the newest Airport Extreme that is 802.11ac and the newest computers that are AC compliant your speed will be 5 times faster than anything on the market right now.

  • Very Slow Internet Connection and Backups

I have had a Time Capsule for some time now (1st generation) and it has caused nothing but headaches. I have put up with it for some time but I have a very slow internet connection and cannot leave Time Machine on or it bogs down my machine, so I only backup periodically. Specifics are provided below.
I have a poor internet connection to begin with. When plugged in directly either to my modem or through Ethernet to the Time Capsule, I get download speeds of ~ 2.9 Mbits/sec download, 0.7 Mbits/sec upload. When connected over wireless, the speeds drop to about 0.6 Mbits/sec download, 0.6 Mbits/sec upload. I feel like I am working on dial-up. I have both a Mac and a PC, and speeds are the same on both, so it does not appear to be a computer issue. I have played with various settings in the Airport, including how connected (b-n or n only), DHCP settings, etc, but nothing makes a difference. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the discussion area, bigbrianb!
Have you downloaded a utility like iStumbler to get a look at the signal strength and noise on your wireless network?
iStumbler will display most of the other wireless networks around you, so you'll have an idea of the competition for unused channels. Ideally, you want your network to be on a channel that is at least 4-5 channels away from any other network to minimize the chances of wireless interference. Is that the case there?
Your signal strength should be 50% or greater and noise less than 10% for a good quality connection on your network. Is that the case there?
There are more things to test, but this will get things going.

  • MBP suddenly SLOW wifi connect!! help

All of a sudden the wifi speeds on my MBP are very, very slow. Like 100-300kbps when on the very same home wifi network my iPhone gets 3mbps down.
Is there any thing on my MBP I can check, config settings???
    thanks for any help!!

I have this very same issue. I have the MR814v2 from Netgear (fairly old now but still works very well with other machines). I have a Powerbook G4, a Windows XP machine with a Netgear adapter and the new MBP 15.4 all connected to the same router.
The data transfer of both the G4 and the PC are fast but the MBP is frustratingly slow.
I checked the activity monitor and found that Skype had some 23 threads running. I terminated both Skype and Adium. This made maybe slight improvements but not much.
I also turned off the firewall on the MBP but this too makes little difference.
Does anyone have any further suggestions?
Is there a known fault with the MBP Airport?

  • Very slow network connection via LAN or Wifi problem

    Hello,
I am running Windows xp MCE version on my Macbook 2.2. I have a very bothersome problem with my network speed at work.
When I run Windows on my Mac and connect to the network of my workplace using LAN or Wireless, I can surf the local websites and Email by a very nice speed but when I try to open any page outside the companies website, it is very slow or sometime it does not even open it. In status bar it says "Waiting for www...".
I tried almost everything. The problem does not come from my firewall(I even unistalled it). My network setting are like everybody else. I dissabled the auto Comunication speed. nothing seems to help.
It seems to me that this is a problem with windows on Macbook.
I was wondering has anybody a similar problem?
Does anybody has any solution for that?
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro 2010: very slow wireless connection

I know a number of people have posted similar questions, but I think I've done everything I can to fix this.
I bought a 13 inch MacBook Pro last week, and found I was getting a very slow connection to my wireless network. OK when I was right next to the base station, but very slow in another room (the room I want to use it in).
I checked with speedtest.net, which showed I was getting download speeds of around 0.3 Mbps - although, curiously, it showed upload speeds of 1.5 Mbps. I ran my old MacBook in the same room, on the same wireless connection, and consistently got speeds of over 10 Mbps. So it can't be the network that's causing the issue.
After an hour on the phone with tech support, I took the Mac back to the Apple Store, where I was unable to get any wireless connection whatever. They exchanged it for a new machine. Worked fine in the store - but when I got it home, I was still getting very slow speeds. The old MacBook still outperforms it by at least a factor of ten. All the system software is up to date.
Is this a dodgy batch? Or has the wireless range dropped considerably with the new MacBooks?

    Darin,
You're right - there are a lot of issues about MBP WiFi. I think there's a major problem with it.
If there was a ..."major problem with it" you would see more complaints than wifi just being among the top 10 discussion items in a trouble shooting forum. There are millions of MBP users many of whom, like myself, use wifi every day without issue.
Your statement "They exchanged it for a new machine. Worked fine in the store - but when I got it home, I was still getting very slow speeds." would lead one to suspect maybe interference from some source or a configuration issue rather than a "major problem".
You probably already tried changing the channel, resetting your router, changing the security scheme, elimination possible sources of interference, separating your components (router, computer, external monitor, ...), etc. but maybe starting over with a default configuration will help isolate the problem.

  • Needed: Optimization tips from a Pro for a very slow internet connection

I am on a remote base in Iraq with about 150 people sharing a satellite connection with a 2MB pipe. It is slow. There is nothing I can do about the volume of people, QoS from the provider, and there is no competition.
Given that, I would like to know what I can tune on my machine to make the most of a slow, frustrating experience.
I have noticed although I have browser caching turned on, it appears my browsers (safari, Omni, FF) don't try t take advantage of it. They still spend 10 minutes trying to get in touch with the website and start from scratch. Is there a browser that visits it's cache first and then looks for changes? Are there settings I am overlooking that can force the browser to load from cache first and then look for differences? Are there command line parameters or configuration files I can edit and modify to make a difference for the better?
I also have a buddy running linux and he installed a DNS caching mechanism that reduced his repeat lookups from 5 seconds to 0. He also installed another website data caching mechanism that truly stores the pages of websites he frequently visits. His experience was enhanced tremendously.
What do you recommend I do from the command line and within my browsers to maximize facilities like caching to make a slow situation a little better?
I apprecite your time and advice

    Hi Sahar,
    1) To post your adsl line statistics you can be connected to the home hub or router via wireless.
Below is some information on how to obtain your adsl line stats. You can also see this link here ADSL Statistics
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
    Then:
     1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
     2) click Settings
     3) Click Advanced Settings
     4) Click Broadband
     5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 1.3)
or http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9118 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 94.1.11)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
There are more useful links on Keith's website here: If you have an ADSL connection, please select this link
    2) To run and post the results of a BT Wholesale Speed Test it is recommended to do this with a wired ethernet connection, as a WiFi connection can be effected by other electronic devices in your property.
It is also best to have a landline phone of some sort, even if you don't use it, at is is a very handy tool to test your landline for any noise.
As any noise on your landline can dramatically reduce your broadband performance.
You can get a cheap corded landline phone from most electronic stores or online.
They are also good in emergencies when there is a power cut as a corded landline phone will still work.
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers
