[VIA Series] PT8 Neo-V JBAT1 pin positions - stupid question

Which end to count from - can't tell from the manuals. Is 1 at the end nearest the IDE connectors?
In one position (shorting pins farthest from the IDE connectors) nothing at all happens, in the other position I get through the bios to a blinking cursor on a blank screen.

Okay - her's my spec:
MSI PT8 Neo-V
Pentium 4 2.53 533fsb Northwood
Samsung 256MB DDR PC2100
ATAPI DVDROM 16X
TOSHIBA DVD-R-/DVD-RW-
Seagate ST380021A 80GB 7200RPM
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440SE
Seasonic SS 300FS 300W Power Supply
{+12v=15A,+3.3v=28A,+5.0v=30A}
All I did was change the motherboard from a VIA P4PB400 after an overheating problem (the processor fan broke due to build-up of dust - since then the PC was 'okay' but was cutting out after about 30 minutes use). I then tried a CPU upgrade on the VIA but it didn't support the Precott 2.4GHz I'd bought - so I went for the MSI board. I get the same symptoms with the MSI board using the Prescott - went back to the Northwood after seeing the power issues on your forum.
So - even if I unplug the DVDs and floppy - I get either nothing at all, or no hard drive boot (depending on the JBAT1 jumpers - hence I'd like to know which jumper is number 1).

  • [VIA Series] PT8 Neo Vmod???

Tried googling to no result... anyone know of any droop mods for these boards?? thanks

1.648V -> 1.584V, 64mV. Anyway, Vcore is designed to vary with loads. Since you said that's not even load, and it fluctuates, that means there is a serious instability on your board and this can kill your CPU sooner than you have thought. 1.648V is VERY VERY high for Northwood, and KILLING for Prescott. Even if you managed to mod it higher, the fluctuation will become greater and will yield your system unbootable, not to mention burn your CPU. This is not worth it. Go and get a faster processor and start from a lower Vcore again. What sort of cooling you have?

  • [VIA Series] PT880 Neo-FSR...SOOOO ANGRY!

    Hi all,
I bought my PT880 Neo-FSR around late January/early February and until recently I hadn't been doing anything too memory intensive. Recently I bought World of Warcraft and have had many crashes. First it was tolerable, then when it got really bad i thought it was Blizzard's fault. I checked their boards and went throught their steps to rectify. One of which was the memtest86.
I ran the memtest and found that my Corsair was bad, both sticks! So i tried some Kingston. All of it also bad. 7 sticks of memory. I thought, "There's no way that could be right." So I ran memtest on another computer, a cheapie eMachine. Every piece of memory i had was A-ok. I thought i'd get a third PC involved for a final say. I ran the memtest again (mulitple passes each time mind you) and again no errors.
I came here to see if anyone else had a similar problem, and yeah. But no solution for me. This is pretty much my hail-mary. I'd really like help from someone more knowledgeable than myself. I really do not want to buy a new mobo, but WoW is a subscription game...i'd really like to play it as well as edit video, or record stuff with my video card.
If you have any solutions for me PLEASE, I really need help. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

ConeJodc, it's not your memory.  Some will tell you it's your pwr supply, some will tell you to change your ddr voltage... it's none of that.  This mobo is crap in my opinion because it's got the VIA name on it.  Everything I've ever owned that had a VIA chipset eventually blew up (usually it was crap to begin with).
See my latest update in my post regarding this motherboard.

The same memory that tested bad in my PT880 Neo-FSR runs perfectly fine in my new 865PE Neo2.
Return it if you can and get the intel based 478 board.

  • [VIA Series] PT880 Neo - 2 dead PCI slots?

Scanning through the forums, I didn't see anything relevant so here goes.
I bought my board not too long ago and have been slowly adding peripherals to my system.  I try to spread things out when choosing a PCI slot for a new card.  Well, looking at my sig, I have discovered that two of my PCI slots are dead.
When I say dead, I mean that I'll install a card there (previously never installed), boot up to Windows, and wait for the Found New Hardware dialog.  I think that this is slightly broken, so I go to the Device Manager and none of my new items show up with uninstalled or installed drivers.  I crack my case, move the card to one of the working slots, and everything is dandy.
For the record, I refer to PCI 1 as the closest PCI slot to the AGP slot (most central physically on the motherboard).  Inheritently, PCI 5 is the slot closest to the corner of the motherboard.  I am having problems with slots 2 and 3.
I am hoping that there is a dip switch or a rule similar to memory slot usage that will fix this problem.  I have not found a solution yet and am hoping that someone here can help.
    Thanks.

Update the BIOS, clear the CMOS, if ur problem is not solved, RMA the mainboard.

  • [VIA Series] PT880 Neo-FSR hangs during POST after connecting USB device

I "successfully" built a new machine from scratch for the first time.  Windows 2000 was installed and working with updates.  I connected an iPod to a USB port (during the iTunes software installation) and the machine froze.  After a power cycle, the machine will not successfully boot.  After the fact, I discovered that the grounding wires on the USB2 connector were no longer connected.  I'm not 100% sure that I plugged the iPod into the USB ports connected to USB2, but that's a good assumption.
On reboot, the screen starts normally.  When the line "DEL: Setup  F11: Boot Menu F12:Network Boot TAB: Logo  F10: Flash Recovery" appears, the machine stops.  The next line reads "Flash Recovery".  The D-Bracket2 indicator lights stop at "Testing Base and Extended Memory".
I'm unable to select any of the options to enter the BIOS setup, etc.  I tried clearing the CMOS data using the jumper and I now get the logo screen, but the system still hangs with the same D-Bracket2 lights.
I do not have any spare memory, so if I need to swap it out for diagnostics, I'll have to go shopping.
Is there any way to salvage this board or did I permanently fry it?

No luck on entering BIOS or getting graphic screen to clear.
To clarify, I cleared the CMOS in despiration after the system hung and I couldn't get into BIOS.  I don't remember all the details from the original screen (before it was obscured by the graphic!), but I know that there was no "error message" per se.  Everything appeared normal except that "Flash Recovery" appeared an additional time below the "DEL: Setup..." line.  Before clearing the CMOS, I had no apparent response from any key.  (DEL, F10, F11, F12, etc.)
I'm inclined to assume that I managed to actually fry something on the board, but I'm hoping to get that confirmed before buying a replacement.

  • PT8 Neo would not power up

My PT8 Neo was fine all along. Then one day, it would not power up. After the Start button was depressed, the power light in front came on but the PSU would not power up. There was no 5V and 12V on the hard drive power connectors. All components including the PSU but not the motherboard were tested on another machine and worked. Please help.

Thanks for your tip. Removed battery and then reinserted. No luck. Also have tried changing the jbat1 setting. In the other position, the power light in front did not come on at all. In the original position, the light came on after the start button was depressed. It then went off when the reset button was depressed. Looks like the motherboard is not sinking sufficiently pin 14 of the 20-pin power connector to cause the PSU to start up.

  • PT8 Neo limited overclocking?

Recently I bought the MSI PT8 Neo, I needed SATA and wanted FSB 800 so I could overclock my good old 1.6GHZ Northwood.
This was a bit of a bummer, the board doesn't allow me to overclock more then FSB 132. The problem is the bios detect it's a FSB 100 CPU and because of that the bios locks me to the max of FSB 132. CPU's with a FSB 133 are locked to a max of FSB 199.
Does anyone know how to bypas this "feature"?
I really wonder why msi did this, I know my cpu can run @ FSB 150 and I really want to get there but this mobo is holding me back. I have bios version V1.3

Now that is a Real Bummer , And until the BIOS Code is Changed (If it is Ever Changed) I'm afraid that there is no Work around for this , I am really Supprised that MSI has this "Low OC Limit" in their BIOS, But who knows Maybe VIA had something to do with it......But if I were you, I would go to the VIA Forums to take a Peak, on what their Members are doing to Circumvent this Roadblock so to speak....Maybe they have Discovered a Few tricks there  http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=1   ..................Sean REILLY875

    - Try remove and re-seat cpu and cooler.
    - Check 4-pin cpu powerconnection.
    - Spec your Powersupply (Amps on the 3,3/5v/12v lines - read from PSu label)
Supportlist from bios 2.0, make some differans on which Prescott 2,8Ghz/ 533mhz/ 1MBcache, cpu model you´ve got.

  • PT8 Neo SATA Raid Configuration Utility

I recently upgraded my system which was running a AMD athlon 1.2GHZ processor and only 128mb SDRAM.  The system was stable and running windows XP home edition.
I upgraded to the PT8 Neo motherboard which supports SATA hard drives.  I was expecting a dramatic increase when I upgraded my system to the new P4 800mhz FSB 3.0GB processor and 512MB DDR 400mhz ram.
I was still using my WD 60GB EIDE Hard Drive when I upgraded the Motherboard, Ram, & Processor.  The upgrade went smoothly and system worked without glitches.
Unsatisfied with the increase in performance, I also purchased a Western Digital Raptor 74GB 10000 RPM hard drive using the SATA interface cable.
I have updated the bios of the motherboard and updated the driver for the SATA raid controller using Live Bios Update 3.
    I am having 2 problems:
Problem 1.  When I enter the bios for the SATA Raid configuration utility after the initial post by pressing , none of the selections are available.  I move my arrows down but nothing highlights and I can't select anything in the configuration utility except ESC key to exit.
The SATA controller is enabled in the BIOS.
The initial SATA Raid Configuration displayed immediately after the post, does show the hard drive.
I want to be able to boot from the new WD Raptor Hard Drive and transfer all the existing files from the IDE Drive to the SATA drive, but I can't seem to get the drive to initialize, format, fdisk, etc.
Problem 2.  Windows XP doesn't have enough resources available to activate the VIA Serial ATA RAID Controller in Device Manager.  It shows a Yellow ! and returns a code 12 (This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use).  I have tried disabling several items in the bios including LAN support, On board Sound but nothing seems to work.
Keep in mind, I have downloaded the latest bios, latest drivers, etc.
The rest of the components on my machine are as follows:
    1.  Custom Built Computer (Non-Branded)
    2.  60GB Western Digital 7200 RPM IDE Hard Drive on IDE0 (Master)
    3.  DVD Rom on IDE0 (Slave)
    4.  MSI 52x32x52x CDRW on IDE1 (Master)
    5.  Zip 100 IDE Drive (Slave)
    6.  Floppy Drive
    7.  Pentium 4 3.0GZ 800mhz FSB
    8.  512mb DDR 400mhz Memory
    9.  ATI All-In-Wonder PCI Video Card
    10. SIIG Firewire controller
I have already tried removing the SIIG firewire controller thinking that it was getting in the way of available resources.  That did not work.
I have invested alot of money on this system, I wanted the best and have always used MSI motherboards because of their stability and reliability.
Please help as soon as possible.
    Thanks

first off you are only using one SATA so no option are avalible in Raid Bios
in order to install windows the safe way detach your 60ata hrad drive plug in the raptor and install windows then Press F6 at the begining the you will have to the SATA diskett in the floppy drive  in stall SATA windows drivers continue with install.
once you are fished Windows, drivers then shut down and plug in your ATA hard drive turn on your PC enter the bios navagate to the Advanceed BIOS Features/Boot Sequency selected your SATA raid drive as First boot then CD roms as second. then your done boot in to windows

According to this page http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=597 that board doesn't have a Promise controller. You need to install the Via driver.
If you don't have a disk there is a driver link on that page. You download the zip file and inside you will find instructions on making a floppy.
Hi I did taht thing but it didn`t work either.. when i start the xp instalation, booting from Xp cd , it charges all its files but then when it says "Press ENTER to continue the instalations" the message is there AGAIN... THERE'S NOT HARD DRIVE ....
what can i do,  WHAT U THINK PEOPLE, This maimboard supports SATA II, I thougth that it could works like SATA 150, i don't care the technology, i just want IT WORKS lile 150 sata 2 i dont care that.... but JUST WORKS!!

  • Speedfan and PT8 Neo-v board

I have a PT8 neo-v board with a pentium 4 2.8 (800) processor and 512MB ram for which I am trying to use Speedfan to control the speed of the CPU fan. I have set speedfan up as instructed and it shows the speed percentage altering correctly as the CPU temperature changes but the fan speed does not change and is always the same at approximately 2200 RPM. I have no other fan connected to the board so it must be reading the CPU fan speed.
Does the board require any modifications in the bios to allow speedfan to alter the CPU fan speed or does this board not allow any alterations of the CPU fan speed?
I have a power supply that is rated at 30 amps on the 12 volt line but I noticed that the temperature graph on speedfan would suddenly drop by 5 degrees and then return immediately to the previous level. I logged the voltages, fan speed against the CPU temperature but there was no alterations in these when the temperature dropped. I am wondering wether to return this board for another make of board as I also have problems running the ram at DDR333 and these problems may be related to each other.
