Video files not playing in iTunes

In iTunes on OS Lion on an iMac, I started getting an error message that the "video needs QuickTIme and it is no longer supported by iTunes." What gives? The files are m4v and won't play even 5 minutes after I download them.
If I download them to my MacBook then access them through the shared media, they will play and become part of the library on the iMac. Seems like a lot of bother just to watch a video.
Anyone have a clue about what's going on?

Sorry about not being more precise; I usually grab an image to save, but didn't this time.....yes, that's it.
Checked the link. Did as I was instructed, and it seems to work ok now; HOWEVER, when I first got the iMac about four weeks ago, everything worked perfectly after ai set it up and migrated everything from my Mini. I had a system crash on 2 desktops, and had to restore both of them. The Mac mini is just as good as it was before, and the iMac is still a bit schizophrenic. The iTunes thing was one of the delusions.
I read about 32- and 64-bit, but still don't know about the resulting effect and whether it means under-utilizing the iMac.

Regular playlists vs smart playlist does not make a difference. What I noticed is that some videos create this behavior and some not. I created 2 videos and 2 music playlists, one with 2 songs and 2 videos (that I encoded myself with Handbrake). Another list with 2 videos and 2 songs, videos encoded with Handbrake, but that I noticed they triggered the behavior. The first playlist played fine, with no problems. The second one, created the problem. When I look at the video, it is the same type of video (bit rate, audio channels, etc...) I don't see why it would do that.
Later I will test: playing those videos in question and then selecting songs to see if they play.

Video file not playing in Photos

Imported photos/videos from a SD card. Performed this task many times before. This time, some video files display as "AVI", as opposed to displaying the first frame. The video will not play. The file is skipped when I use sweeping motion to go to next/previous picture/video.
Also, I don't know how to delete the file, because I cannot select it.
Most video files from the SD card work as they should.

Any ideas? Is there a difference between the Quick Time 7 Pro encoding of an iPod/iPhone video file and the way a similar file is encoded through QUick Time X?
Unfortunately, the latest iTunes update 9.2.1 has not solved the problem. I cannot get to the bottom of this. Quite frustrating. Any suggestions?

Music Videos do not play in iTunes 11.1.4.62

Had to reinstall iTunes and now none of my videos play.
I do not know when it happened (at a certain iTunes upgrade or not) as i don't play the videos that much.
I have switch video settings to SAFE MODE in Quicktime, as the various different topics here say to do, no avail. The thumbnails of the videos appear in iTunes, they simply do not play. Black screen only and the progress bar doesn't PLAY. you can slide it, but no picture or sound. All files are .m4v.
Windows Vista.
I know the files work, as they play in regular Quicktime.
Any idea?

the only other thing I think might be causing this is the kernel upgrade but I don't really want to downgrade that because potentially that would mean doing it for all the upgrades!

I wonder if I could write a script that would check dmesg or a log file for the presence of "*ERROR* Failed to initialize GPU, declaring it wedged" & if found to load a config to enable uxa lol

Purchased music and m4p files not playing in itunes

Background: so I had @me.com account with all my music purchased but it got disabled. so I tried to reset it but of course my birthdate did not work. I dont have contacting apple but they could not verify me with only 1 security question, no credit card, and incorrect serial number. so the @me account cant be accessed. Later that year my computer got struck by lighting destroying the hard drive/computer. the good new is I had a backup of the music. I put the music file on the new computer and when I tried to play the .m4p protected files itunes wants my @me.com account I cant access. I have my music on my computer and on my ipod classic but can only play the music on my ipod classic. I have many more tracks I want to add to my ipod but dont want to lose the music I already bought. I already tried many times with program to convert the music but it seems that need the music to play in itunes to work (authorize computer).
Question: Is trying to get my music to play the .m4p files a lost cause? Or can I stream the music from my ipod classic to computer then convert it? Or can I copy an authoriztion file from ipod classic? Any assistance with is would be very helpful.
PS: fairplay is not fair at all.

Video Files not Playing in MAIL

I can't view video files in MAIL after LION upgrade. Previous O/S worked great. Downloaded updated Flip for Mac, Flash, etc. When I receive a video file such as a WMF, I can see it down load and then the viewing screen goes completely black. If I save attachment and open with VLC player, it opens and plays. If opened in Quicktime, it plays audio only.

What happens if you switch graphic cards, any difference ?

(OSStatus error -50.) video files not playing please help

I own a Nikon D300s, I have been downloading video from it for quite a while without any issues, but today when I tried to open some of my video clips I received the error code below...
*The movie could not be opened*.
Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -50.)
I am curious if anybody else has had this problem and how can I solve it?
I posted it here because all my clips are Quicktime AVI logos. All the video that works show the start of the clip.

I just got a new MBP yesterday and have perian, but i cannot open an .mkv file that could on my old computer. I have the most recent version of perian, this should be working. If anyone has any idea what OSStaus Error -50 means, please tell me and help me fix it because a new computer is supposed to work BETTER than the one that was four years old and couldn't run iTunes at the same time as Pages.

Some .mp3 files not playing in itunes?

I can't seem to play some of the .mp3 files in itunes 10 that I was able to play before the upgrade. For example in the rip I have of The Beatles - Abbey Road 2009 Stereo Remaster, only 3 of the 17 tracks can be imported into the itunes library. When I try to import the missing .mp3 files it won't even add them under the abbey road album. And it won't play either. The missing files play fine in windows media player, quicktime, vlc media player and others. What's going on with this new itunes update? Thanks to anyone that can help out.

I have the same problem here in Belgium/Europe after upgrading to iTunes 10.
About 10gb of 310Gb in total is not readable anymore. I use only mp3 320kbps.
You can still find them back in iTunes, but no playback anymore.
I have deleted them from the list and do a "add to library". Impossible to import this data anymore.
What is strange is that this mp3 data can be used in QuickTime Player.
And..the same data is not readable on a another (Windows 7) pc with iTunes 10, neither on a pc with Vista and iTunes 9.2.
Who can help ??

Movies and video will not play on iTunes

For the last two weeks none of my videos in my iTunes library will play; neither TV shows, movies purchased from the iTunes store, or my own vidoes added to my library. Not sure what to do.
Videos play fine on my iPad, but through iTunes on my PC, nothing. iTunes just freezes up to the point where I have to "end-task" the operation through my Task Manager.

There are many posts on this topic. I stumbled across the answer in a desperate bit of Googling outside apple.com last night. The problem lies in the user interface design for iTunes, and deleting prefs doesn't fix it. The menu bar view->video size options for display size when not in full screen have NO EFFECT on the display size when full screen (command-F) is toggled on. When full screen is on, the viewing size is controlled by RIGHT CLICKING anywhere in the play control box that appears when you move the mouse. The menu you get looks like the menu bar version, but only affects full screen operation. I think this is horrendously bad UI design. If it is useful to have separate settings for display size for full and normal screen view, then BOTH sets of settings should be available in the menu bar version of this menu, and tricky crap like a properties menu attached to a disappearing control box during full screen play should have a stake driven through its little black heart.
iTunes help is silent on the topic. Why anyone would expect to find a right-click menu expanding from a disappearing control box is beyond me. Are there any examples where this idea is used elsewhere and turned out to be a good idea? Where its use is so clear that anyone could find it and no documentation is needed? The number of posts about this problem, not to mention other aspects of full screen play, such as an option to blank or not blank a second screen, or not have the movie and the iTunes mini-player jump all over the place when the zoom button is clicked, suggest that this is an area that is overdue for a human guidelines design review. The movie control box is not a media object, and there is no reason to expect that a vanishing control box would have properties that can be modified. It requires blind luck to find this command, and that isn't very Apple.

Video files not playing in Mail Account

Howdy
A couple of days ago, video attachements that have been sent to my email account will not open. When they arrive, they look like they always have, i.e., they have the bar at the bottom with the tracking arrow, speaker for volumn, ect.
Then all of that disappers, leaving a black screen. When I click on that, I get a message box with several options, one being Play Attachment.
When I click on that, get another video screen with all of the usual stuff. When I click on the Play arrow, I can get sound but no video.
Any thoughts will be appreciated.
It is the email account in my iMac. Just updated to Lion.

Video Files not importing into iTunes Library.

I have been converting my movie file into mp4 format so i can use them on my iPod video. I converted all of the files and then added their folder to the iTunes Library, but only some fo the videos show up. I have tried to add these files individually, changing their names, even moving them to antoher folder and adding them. What can I do to get these files into the library and on to my iPod?

I wish i knew. It seems to be very random in which videos it doesn't add. Is it too much to ask to watch SNL clips on my iPod?

Videos will not play in presentation mode. They play fine when I preview them in Keynote but once I am presenting it trys to play and then skips the slide.

Some videos will not play in the Public site

For some reason, I have quite a few videos that do not play in the public site while other videos play just fine. When selecting a video, the player opens but the video never starts.
Any ideas?
