Video scopes blank

Have recently experienced video scopes going blank under all conditions - during capture, during clip playback, during timeline playback. I followed the thread of some previous related discussions (last May and June) but found no resolution. I am working in SD (not HD), capturing from mini-DV. As I frequently work with archival footage of dubious quality I use the scopes a lot to evaluate if I'm in the ballpark or out beyond the fence. I recently did the cross-grade/upgrade to the latest version of FCP. Any thoughts about what's happening? Is this perhaps a software bug?

By "blank" I mean that, on the black rectangle, the scope guides are shown - circles, lines, etc -- but no information about the image is shown. It's an empty graph or blank graph paper. By "all the time" I mean (after some investigation today again) under any condition where there is an image to read from except during playback from the edited timeline. When playing back from the timeline, the graphs are shown normally.
Thanks for your replies so far!

    - youtube video just blank, but audio is there. tried both embedded in facebook or other website, and at youtube.com. both same result.
    - facebook video played just fine
    - other browser played just fine.. no problem at all..
    - i'm on firefox developer edition
    - tried installing latest flash update, still the same result.

This problem can be resolved by disabling hardware acceleration in your Flash Player settings. (See [[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems|this article]] for more information on using the Flash plugin in Firefox).
To disable hardware acceleration in Flash Player:
#Go to this [http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues Adobe Flash Player Help page].
#Right-click on the Flash Player logo on that page.
#Click on '''Settings''' in the context menu. The Adobe Flash Player Settings screen will open.
    # Click on the icon at the bottom-left of the Adobe Flash Player Settings window to open the Display panel. <br/> <br/>[[Image:fpSettings1.PNG]] <br/>
    # Remove the check mark from '''Enable hardware acceleration'''.
    # Click '''Close''' to close the Adobe Flash Player Settings Window.
    # Restart Firefox.
This [http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/help01.html Flash Player Help - Display Settings page] has more information on Flash Player hardware acceleration, if you're interested.
Does this solve the problem? Let us know.

  • Tool bench / Waveform monitor / video scopes- brightness of display problem

the display in my tool bench, and specifically in the waveform monitor, is too dark to read.
Happily in the upper left corner, jsut below the "Video Scopes" tab, there are two buttons to adjust:
    click to set scale brightness
    click to set display brightness
But ... everytime i go away and come back to the tool bench, it reverts to the too dark setting and i must reset it. there must be some way to make a new default value to the display brightness that stays. As it is, the default is waaaay low, so it isn't some factory middle value.
    Ideas?
    thanks

None, sorry. Mine work as they are supposed to which does not help.

  • Live video scopes?

I'm using 5.1.4 and can't get the Live Video scopes to work. I'm using an A1-Xh, plugged via 4-6 firewire into a Macbook. When I go to log and capture--> clip settings and click on the video scopes, nothing happens. I'm also using the HDV-1080p24 codec... shooting of course in hd on 24f. Thanks.

What do you expect to see. You are just copying data via firewire.
Scopes ony function when digitizing via analog input.
Perhaps he's wanting to use the scopes to adjust his lighting.
Regardless, the scopes DO work with DV over Firewire (at least in FCP 5). Now I seem to recall that you cannot pass HDV through the Firewire port live, maybe someone else can clarify that. You should be able to pass DV from that camera, though.

  • Youtube videos show blank

If I go to Youtube, all videos show blank. No video. No playback. Nothing. Just a blank white area where the video should be. No problem with Firefox. What is going on?
    Safari 4.0.5 on Mac OS X 10.6.3.

    HI,
Try uninstalling then reinstalling a new copy of the Flash Player plugin which is required for YouTube content.
    Uninstall Flash
    Install Flash
    Then Repair Disk Permissions
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and *restart your Mac.*

  • Video Scope for Broadcast

Does anyone have a suggestion for a plug-in or idea so that I can get a video scope for editing work I am doing for TV broadcast? I want to make sure my colors are good to go each time and did not see to find much in CS3 that will help that much for me.
    Thanks.

OK, thanks for the info. Sorry I've got no more "cohesive" answer for you, as such, but here are some things to think about regarding PPro and video levels.
1.) When editing HDV, PPro incorrectly converts RGB<->YUV as Rec.601. This can be seen on the scopes within Premiere. So -- scopes or not -- maintaining accurate colors can be difficult in HDV projects. DV projects with DV media have no issue here.
2.) When output via AME, all YUV sources (DV, HDV, etc.) are converted to RGB. The same is true for DebugMode when set to RGB. Since your MPEG2 (or H.264) encoder must then convert these back to YUV, the transformation is done in such a way that luma levels are essentially clipped to the legal range of 16-235. Yo may still want to know what your luma levels are, but they will never be out-of-range when you output from Premiere in RGB.
3.) Considering point #2 above, it is unlikely that chroma will ever exceed the "legal" range of 240. I am not certain of this, but I believe that AME (and most encoders) will map RGB -> YUV as "clamped" to legal chroma ranges (as with the luma).
4.) Since output to MPEG2, etc. from Premiere will implicitly have a YUV->RGB->YUV conversion, the values you see in PPro's built in scopes are not necessarily the values that will be appear in your final output. The scopes may be give you an idea of how much will be clipped, but little more.
5.) You can get a more realistic and accurate picture using DebugMode FrameServer in YUY2 mode and opening the "signpost.avi" in AviSynth. There is the Vscope plugin for AviSynth that will show you the YUV values on output. Assuming that your encoder (such as ProCoder, CCE, HC Encoder to name a few) can natively handle YUV ouput via AviSynth, these scopes will allow you to see the values that will ultimately be encoded. This YUY2 output may contain illegal values, however. Fortunately AviSynth provides a simple way of clipping these without performing a YUV->RGB->YUV conversion. The command
Limiter(16, 235, 16, 240) will clip your values into legal ranges.
So, there's my 2 cents on the subject. Take it as you please.

  • Video Scopes will not adjust

I did a search so if you have a link to answer this I'd love it. During capture, I want to use the FCP Video Scopes. I can get the waveform monitor and vectorscope to pop up and they show the info but I cannot adjust them. In clip settings, video, the adjustment sliders are not active, they are grey. Help?

I can get the waveform monitor and vectorscope to pop up and they show the info but I cannot adjust them. In clip settings, video, the adjustment sliders are not active, they are grey. Help? < </div>
The availability of these adjustment sliders is clearly explained in the manual. They are not active on digital transfers because DV files are merely being copied from one place to another, they are not processed.
Reading down the thread to where you finally get around to supplying the information we need to help you, your BetaSP has a built-in time base corrector that should have a remote panel on it for controlling the proc amp functions. If it does not, you got ripped off. If you do not know how to operate the proc amp, you will need the Sony's manual.
Unless your BetaSP is really a digiBeta, you will need conventional waveform and vector displays between the deck's analog output and your capture system to accurately portray the effects of any adjustments you make to phase, pedestal, luma, and chroma.

no official way but if you open the Apple TV and put the hd in the external case it should mount and give you access to the data on it

  • Video Scope Crash

I have two issues which may or may not be related. I am using a dvcam deck and I'm getting audio but no video. I went to the video scopes to see if anything was there and it crashed. Every time I now open the video scopes up in the log and capture window it crashes. In my capture settings I have my capture/input set to DV NTSC 48 kHz which worked in the past.
Any ideas on either or both issues?
    Thanks,
    Rob

First, try trashing your FCP preeferences. FCP Rescue (for FCP4) or FCP Rescue 5 (for FCP5) make that easier.
    http://pistolerapost2.com/fcprescue/
Quit FCP, start Rescue, click on the Trash button, quit Rescue, start FCP, select the DV NTSC Easy Setup, and see if that helps.
    Please report back.

  • FCP Video Scopes

I've been doing a lot of reading on the internet, and in Final Cut Pro manuals about how to read the video scopes, but there are still a few questions I need answered.
    1. When you keep the waveform monitor reading between 0 and 100 IRE, does that mean nothing can go outside of that range if you want properly exposed footage? What constitutes proper lighting? I have a few clips shot with a Sony VX-2100 that are a bit dark and grainy that peak out at 90%. What exactly are you looking for when reading this scope? What does a perfect video look like on the scopes?
    2. The line on the vectorscope that measures proper skin tones: What happens when you have a small cluster or two separate lines that don't run along that skin tone line? What should you be looking at when adjusting for skin tones.
    3. How do you want your zebra stripes to look on the setting of 70 when your shooting?
Any thourough explanation would be greatly appreciated.

    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?[email protected]@.ee6bc80
I stand corrected. Nothing in the terms about in depth workflow and teaching how to do something.
    My humblest apologies.
I guess I assumed that this being the Apple Final Cut Pro site, and the agreement stating:
"Unless otherwise noted, your Submission should either be a technical support question or a technical support answer. Feedback about new feature requests or product enhancements are welcome too. Don't post non-constructive complaints, polls, or petitions."
I thought that the post should be geared toward the product being supported on the site. And not one of your questions was about Final Cut Pro in the slightest...all about how to read scopes and how to light properly and how to set up zebras. Not one of those things is something done in Final Cut Pro....well, OK, there are scopes in FCP...I'll give you that.
I'll just keep to myself now.

Answers in this forum have shown different things have worked for different people.
For some clearing YouTube cookies and the cache solved the problem. For details of how to do that see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Deleting+cookies and https://support.mozilla.com/kb/How+to+clear+the+cache
Others had to go a step further after deleting YouTube cookies and block YouTube from saving cookies. In the Tools menu select Options to open the Options window. Go to the Privacy panel and make sure it is set to "Use custom setting for history". Click the Exceptions button, type in http://www.youtube.com and click on Block
Another option is to disable hardware acceleration for Flash. To do that right-click on a Flash video, select Settings, go to the first tab of the settings for the option to enable/disable hardware acceleration for Flash. This is something recommended by YouTube for those having problems - http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?&answer=1209379

  • Mac mini (late 2012) HDMI video going blank randomly in Yosemite 10.10.1; sometimes comes back on with snowy screen

Wow, this reminds me of what happened with Mavericks 10.9.0 until 10.9.3 and later were released and fixed this problem.
My monitor is a Dell S2440L connected to my Mac mini late 2012 via an HDMI cable.
The monitor goes blank randomly and sometimes a snowy screen like you would see when watching a UHF
channel on an old CRT TV shows up when the video comes back on. This happens while in the OS.
I also have power management problems again with computer not sleeping properly and my Magic Mouse
being able to wake up the computer despite "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" being unchecked.
I also have Wake for network access, power nap and start up after power failure unchecked as well.
Computer sleep and display sleep are set to "never" as I always had it with Mavericks.
These problems occurred after shutting down my Mac and restarting it this morning.
I know using a VGA cable will fix it but I don't want to do that.
Sorry for sounding frustrated but I'm not alone. So many people are having the same issue
of HDMI video blanking out while in the OS.
I love the look of Yosemite but wish I was back with Mavericks 10.9.5 where everything worked
flawlessly and I really mean flawlessly. It was magical. Not a single problem.
I guess we have to wait for 10.10.2 or 10.10.3.
I don't want to go back to Mavericks but if my screen keeps blanking out then my computer is of
no use for work or multimedia.
    I'm sorry about the rant.
If anyone has figured out a workaround until Apple can issue another point release, please let me know.
I already tried resetting the SMC and NVRAM several times to no avail.
    Thanks in advance.
    I appreciate any help.

  • Music Videos are blanking out

    Hi Everyone,
I buy a lot of music videos from Itunes...and lately they have been blanking out on my screen. The music keeps playing, but the screen flicks all white, or goes black. If I move my mouse it comes on, but sometimes blanks again right after. I don't think it's a screen saver issue as it happens very quickly. Any thoughts or help is gratefully received.

my suggestion would be to re download the specific videos that this is happening to. As well make sure you have the latest version of itunes and quicktime. Maybe this will work. Give it a shot. hope all goes well.

  • PE2 - Timeline thumbnail renders, but monitor and burned DVD video is blank for one section. Also audio export quality question

I split a clip to get rid of a few seconds of something else, and everything looked OK. I set it rendering overnight, and this morning, I found most of the DVD was fine, but this one section at the end is black on the DVD. I went back to the project, and although the timeline looks OK with thumbnails generated, it's showing black for that same section in the preview monitor. How can I "regenerate" this clip without re-adding and making the cuts?
The video details look OK though...
    Video: MPEG2 Video 720x576 (4:3) 25.00fps 6802Kbps [Video]
Next up, seeing as I gave only one hours captured video to a whole DVD, I was wondering why the video was quite blocky.
    Then I saw the audio....
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch 192Kbps [AC-3] < what the?!? This is mono video captured off an old tape, so at most it could be 44k 96k mono, not 6ch! But despite FAQ-ing myself silly, I can't see where you change the audio properties...
Help on these two would be greatly appreciated.
Before anyone asks (and they will!) why I don't upgrade, well, V2 does what I want (which is about 2 DVDs per year!) and when I tried V4 trial, on my old 3GHz PC with 3.5Gb RAM it was TOOOO slow

I found the solution to the blank error - what had happened was that when I was trying to make the background, it said "drag media here to make thumbnail" (or something) so I did, but although it didn't work, what I didn't realise was when I dragged the preview image to the thumbnail, I had actually dragged the image right off the screen! But when I did "undo", it looked OK, so I didn't notice it hadn't undone the move. If that makes sense.
As that was the last thing I did, it didn't bother checking before burning. I found this because I started a new project to convert it, and thought "well, if it plays OK here..." and started experimenting. I only saw the video offset by accident!
As for the question about Audio, I was previewing in MPC Home Cinema, but you're right. because when I preview in Windows Media Player, it appears to be OK and says Dolby 2.0
    Thanks for your help!

  • FRAPS videos as blank whites in MPEG Streamclip

I use MPEG Streamclip to convert FRAPS-recorded avi-files into H.264-encoded mov-files. Software versions are at the bottom of this message.
Everything worked fine until yesterday and now FRAPS videos are shown as blank whites in MPEG Streamclip. Converting them also creates solid blank white videos. The sound part of the videos is just fine, however. Also, the FRAPS videos open just fine in Quicktime+Perian, just not in MPEG Streamclip.
In addition to checking that I have the most recent versions of all the software involved, I tried the following: reinstalling Perian, reinstalling Quicktime, reinstalling MPEG Streamclip. I also tried deleting MPEG Streamclip's plist under Library/Preferences.
Nothing works. Any help will be appreciated.

If they play fine in QT Pro, do a save as in QT Pro to a new movie in a MOV container (file extension) and then try MPEG Streamclip.
