Viewing iDVD on 50 inch Plasma tv.

I'm always disappointed when I play my newly created DVD on my home DVD player into a 50 inch plasma HD TV. Photo size is always small. Is there a way to make the photos play full screen? There is 6 inches of black around all the photos. The photos originally were 6 mega pixels on a digital SLR camera. It seems that the process of importing photos into iDVD renders a serious downsize in file size. I've already tried all possible TV adjustments.

Hi Michael
Don't forget that at present, iDVD only renders all image files or DV material to SD resolution. i.e 640 x 480 pixels. That is regardless of your original source.
So here's looking forward to iDVD 9 or ?10 which, coupled with an HD or BluRay DVD burner will then be able to render true HD material.
I think the title iMovie HD is slightly misleading, because it leads one to think that iMovies or slideshows can then be rendered via iDVD as HD but they can't.
Hope that's helpful.

I have a pioneer 50 inch plasma + I purchased new from the company back in 2005.   I tried to hook up an Apple Tv to the pioneer receiver that came with the TV.   I can not get it to work.
The receiver has two HDMI  inputs in the back.  However they say they are not for PC's.  Furthermore they must be set up by going to the home menu.    I tried everything, but I can not get the receiver to talk to the Apple TV. I even tried a connector that uses an HDMI to the Apple TV that has the other side of the cable as 5 RCA cables.  I could not get the receiver to see the Apple TV.   I have a newer TV in the house, it has no problem talking with the Apple TV.  But this older system seems to be handicapped in its ability to talk with the newer Apple TV system.

    Do you have any suggestions
    Thanks

I could not access the Apple TV on the television.   If I put the Apple TV directly into by TV, I have an external sound system (entertainment system), therefore I worry that I would by pass the audio.
Thanks for taking your time to attempt to help!   Any more suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Connecting Samsung 50 inch plasma 5054

I connected my new Core 2 Duo Mac Mini to my Samsung 5054 50 inch plasma. However, if I check the overscan checkbox in the system preferences, the screen is clipped at the edges and I can't see the outside extremeties. If I uncheck the the overscan checkbox, the display does not occupy the whole screen. Is there a way to set up the display so that they screen image fits evenly on the screen?

Very common problem. Some people have success using programs like DisplayConfigX or SwitchRes X to alter the format and timing to make the Mac screen fit the TV. But it is a very hit or miss process. And it may not even work.
Another possibility is that the display itself may have size and centering controls for the video image. Sometimes they are accessed through special service menus that are not published in the user guide. If that's the case, you need to find these on the internet using a search. Good luck.

  • HELP - Table Stand for 42 inch plasma

We bought a 42 inch plasma tv about five years ago.  We wall mounted it and about a year ago we cleaned out the garage and through out the stand.
We are wanting to dismount the tv and place on a tv stand/cabinet.  I searched the internet and can not find a replacement stand and our brand has been discontinued.
Does anyone have any ideas were we can find a stand or any ideas?

I don't know why I thought you mentioned it was a Samsung. I should sleep more and do this less. You can buy a tv stand that you can hang the tv on the back of the stand. Best Buy sells them from Whalen, Bello, Init.

  • Urgent problems with image viewing on my 20 inch Cinema display???

I have a very urgent problem concerning my Apple Cinema 20 inch Display and my SpyderPro2 on my Mac Pro Intel Dual Core Xeon 2x 2.66GHz.
I have been using the Spyder for some years now, but recently I have been having big problems with the results.
I have a major contract with a jewellery company in London, where I clean up digital photos. Images that I have lightened up to look great on my Cinema Display have been reported by my client to look pretty dark on their PC's in their offices.
Some of these images show lines and grubby patches??? To check this I opened files in Photoshop and moved the levels 'black' slider down quite some way, and did see evidence of what the client could see at their end? It seems that when I have used a faded eraser brush it leaves a light patch in between the shadows of the jewellery. This shouldn't be visible to the naked eye though?
I must point out that when I use the eyedropper tool on images, to read the amount of grey or colour in the white areas around the peices, I am shown values of 1,2 or 4 maximum in the CMYK values. 4 percent out of 100 is nothing and should not be visible to the naked eye?
How is it that my clients PC's can see dark shadows and where my eraser brush has rubbed out???
I have tried many re-calibrations and also tested all of my older calibrations dating back a few years. I have also tested the same faulty images on Intel iMac's, an eMac, and a few PC's. On the iMac's I can just about make out the artefacts that my client can see, but nothing that I would deem as unacceptable.
I am at a loss as to the fault, but It may be the Spyder2 Pro's inability to calibrate my Apple Cinema display properly? I may lose my contract which I cannot afford to do, and I simply have to find the cause ASAP.
I have my Mac's in my office apartment next to two bay windows. I have vertical blinds there. When calibrating I have always turned off all the lights and pulled the blinds right back so that only the light from the two large window doors is coming in.
For graphic design the calibrations seemed to be okay for quite some time, but recently it is getting harder to achieve good results with the Spyder? This could affect all of my workflow which is very serious. But I must stress that overall the Spyder results are not terrible. I can see good colours and dark levels and in general across all of my calibrated profiles, the jewellery looks acceptable on my Cinema Display?
I did say to my clients that they should calibrate their PC screen properly but their offices have many Screens and they all show the same artefacts (some much worse than others)? I know that PC Screens are darker than Mac's but a 4% grey should not be visible????
As these are a web company the images will be seen by PC users around the world and most of these will have no calibration on their screens. What can be done to prevent this and what is the cause of this? I can't possible please everyone, but as a creative professional I have to be 100% certain that my workflow is at its best.
I need urgent help to solve this or loose valuable business? I hope that you are able to help solve this mystery.
I have just purchased the new Spyder3 Pro which I hope will give perfect results but I have to find out what the cause of this is. If some of the fault lies with the client, I can charge these for all the testing and calibrating I have done.
    Kind regards,

One thing you might want to try adjusting is the gamma setting in Displays Preferences color calibration area. Macs typically are set at 1.8 but PCs will often use 2.2. That could account for the difference.

  • Samsung 51 inch Plasma Tv

Good Afternoon, I just bought this tv 2 months ago and I am noticing around the letters on the cable its like shadowing around the letters? how can I fix this I attached a pic on what it looks like

Although I can't see the picture you attempted to post, what you described sounds like image retention.  Try turning down the contrast and brightness to see if this continues.  I had a Samsung plasma with contrast set at about 90 and brightness somewhere in the 60s and started having image retention problems after about 10 months with it getting progressively worse.  Others in this forum felt these settings were too high especially since I watched a lot of ESPN with the logos and tickers at the bottom.  I no longer have this TV though.  Keep in mind that images left on the screen for long periods of time can still cause image retention and possibly even burn-in for which there is no "cure".  Some owners never have problems, others aren't so lucky.  So be careful about still images on the screen for prolonged periods of time.

  • Samsung 42-inch Plasma TV just died

My 42-inch HP-T4254 started turning on and off by itself last Saturday and as of Sunday wouldn't stay on at all.  I had a certified Samsung repairman check out the TV early this week and for $99, he told me that it would cost $650 to replace the power supply and motherboard.  I've had this TV for just over 2 years so it was out of warranty.  This is coming at a pretty bad time to have to buy a new TV, which seems like the only option when the repair cost is 75% of the replacement cost.  Obviously, I'm not very pleased with both Best Buy and Samsung at the moment.  Is there anything that Best Buy can do to help me?

it really sad that everyone of you has the same solution of paying more money for extended protection. When you spend thousands of dollars on a tv, why should you have to pay more money for protection on a tv. The tv should last for longer then 2 years. IT should last at least bare min 8 years. I've have a tube tv that i bought 10 years ago and it works fine to this day. I have video game equipment for example a sega nomad and a ps2 that still work just as good as new "old technology".  I have an xbox360 that ive had to have replaced 4 times in 2 years because i would get a red ring of death "hardware failure". their is no excuse for that. the xbox 360 has a terriable defect rate/product failure rate.  The bottom line is the manufacture needs to build quality products that will last and they are not doing that.  They are not building the same quality products they used to. They rush products to market without making sure they are going to be durable, dependable, live up to Tonsumer expectations, ect.... They are getting away with this! They are conditioning you guys to think hey its the way its supposed to be. They are building crappy products and selling them to you and charging even more for a product to protect plan. Dont get me wrong their are going to be defects in manufacturing but as many complaints as ive seen and studied in school and seen in the business world is unacceptable. Now you guys just think its ok thats the way its supposed to be... you should be every bit as mad as the guy that posted this form with his tv going out. its not his fault he didnt want to spend the extra money on the protection on the tv. its the manufactures fault for rushing a product to market without making sure it works, its the manufactures fault for not standing behind their product, its the manufactures fault for not matching up the four marketing P's, its the manufactures fault for not utilizing the many manufacturing techniques that are avaible today that greatly reduce defects, and most of all its YOUR FAULT for condoning the manufactures behavor and continuing to buy from them and saying its ok i just need to buy the extra protection. It's not ok its not the way its supposed to be! Think if you bought a brand new car and it broke down multiple times, this is the same thing! To the guy thats tv broke sorry to hear about that man. If i were you i would call samsungs exective constumer services department (or whatever it is, they have customer service and then they have a level above that you want to complain to them) and complain it will get you some where. Remind them that the cost of fixing your tv is worth a lot less them complaining to 100's of people about how bad their products are and losing those possible customers. It will work it has worked for me when i got screwed over a couple times with the service industry and HH gregg. Just get by the customer service people on the phone and go above them and you will get somewhere. good luck to you. Do your homework, educate yourself, and dont put up with the bs.

  • Insignia 50 inch plasma question

Just bought a Insignia® 50" Class / 1080p / 600Hz / Plasma HDTV last saturday at your best buy located in Tulsa, OK . Picture and everything is amazing but I noticed if I leave it on the netflix screen for more then 10-20 minutes without moving or watch sportscenter or play xbox I get a partial burn in on the screen. It goes away after a little bit, but I was wondering if this was common with these plasma's if so I may want to return it and pay a bit more for a samsung or sony that is less likely to have this issue. If this is no concern and just normal please let me know as this is the first plasma I've owned over 32 inches. thanks in advance
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I know how you feel when you think the TV might not be "perfect".  I have the Samsung 42" 450 series (720p) which is one of their low end plasmas.  I've never left an image frozen on the screen for that period of time that you mentioned.  Dark tickers on ESPN, yes, for hours and no issue.  I can't speak for Insignia plasma TVs, but I understand that this type of image retention is relatively common particularly when the TV is new.  I hear about break in periods to be more careful for a few weeks or so, but I don't know if it's true.  Yeah, I would wait and see how it goes within your 30 days too.  May not hurt to contact Insignia directly to see if they think it's normal too just to gain a little peace of mind.  Although I haven't had this issue, that doesn't mean it couldn't happen on the Samsung or other plasmas as mentioned above about the Pannys.  Best of luck.

  • Viewing TV content on a Plasma Screen

What with the high amount of TV contect now available on the internet I looking for a way to conect a laptop to my home entertainment system. Would a macbook be a good choice for this? What type of conection would I use.

If your TV has a DVI or HDMI connection you'd want to connect via Apple's mini DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter, but for HDMI you'd have to add either a DVI-to-HDMI cable or adapter from a third party. The possible setups would thus be:
MacBook -> Apple mini DisplayPort-to-DVI + DVI cable -> TV with DVI connector.
MacBook -> Apple mini DisplayPort-to-DVI -> DVI-to-HDMI adapter + HDMI cable -> TV with HDMI connector.
You can even purchase third-party cables that have DVI on one end and HDMI on the other. Hovever, you won't get any audio through Apple's adapter since the mini DisplayPort on the MacBook doesn't pass audio and in any case audio pass-through isn't supported under DVI.
If your TV doesn't have DVI or HDMI inputs then you face a more difficult and lower-quality option. You'd start with Apple's mini DisplayPort-to-VGA adapter and then add a third-party VGA-to-analog-TV converter. Here is a post which talks about this latter option:

  • Dynex 42 inch Plasma TV audio problem

Last night while watching TV, the audio went out. We have the TV set up through a Samsung surround sound system. The DVD function has sound while playing a DVD, but no sound when TV mode is selected. Not able to get any sound from the internal speakers of the TV either....ideas? We have powered down the TV, checked connections and pushed every button we can find....Thanks.

Such damage usually occurs when the screen is hit by an object, or is allowed to be laid face down while it is being moved.  Either instance would probably not be covered.

  • Can I view 16:9 in iMovie 4

Hello! This is my first post to the Apple Forum as I've driven myself batty trying to figure this question out alone with iMovie Help, etc. I just bought a new Canon Elura 100 MiniDV camcorder for Christmas. The import process and everything else has been seamless! Actually, I was amazed at how seamless it was. It made my first movie-making experience all the better! However, I've noticed that the image was recorded in the 16:9 aspect ratio but iMovie squeezes it to 4:3. Is there any way to view, edit, and then burn thru to iDVD preserving the original format of 16:9? I prefer widescreen as we have a widescreen flat panel television and would like to avoid both having to upgrade iMovie (if that would even help) and starting recording in 4:3.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   iLife '04

To all those (like me) that have not upgraded in a long time:
I ran into the same problem, having recently purchased a new Panasonic PV GS500. I bought this unit specifically because I wanted to film in 16x9 aspect ratio. I just did an experiment, creating a 10 scond iMovie that had lots of people in the scene. They looked very tall and thin, as would be expected from the conversion to 4x3. I burned the movie to DVD and dropped the finished product into a new Yamaha DVD player and played in our new Panasonic 42 inch plasma. The image was great, filling the screen and everyone looked as they should. So, I now am ready to use iMovie 4.0 with confidence creating widescreen movies.
CAUTION: I listed all the new equipment, not because I am being boastful, but because I wonder whether iMovie 4.0 is actually spitting out a 16x9 aspect ratio product, or is my DVD player and/or TV doing a conversion for me, widening a 4x3 image to fill the screen.
ADVICE: Either way, it does not really matter, so I would advise anyone with iMovie 4.0 to make their own 10 second movie ( it only took five minutes to render a movie this short) and test it out on their own equipment.
Thanks for bringing up the question!

  • DVD looks great on CRT... awful on Plasma

Is it possible to write video to a DVD that will look good on both CRT and Plasma/LCD televisions?
When burning a recent video (24pA, anamorphic, SD) to DVD, the result looks fantastic on an old 13-inch CRT I have, but it looks absolutely awful on my 37-inch plasma. Pixelation, graininess, and other unwanted digital elements show up on the plasma but not at all on the CRT. I've upped the bit rate and double checked all other Compressor settings as per recommendations from several other threads and the Compressor Help Manual, but the result is always the same: GREAT quality (for SD) on CRT... HORRIBLE quality on Plasma.
General advice when editing video in FCP is to view your canvas on a CRT monitor. Now that CRT is on the way out (if not out already), is it wiser to stay within the digital realm and avoid CRT altogether?
I can't be sure what the viewing medium for the DVD will be on the other end when I send it out, so I'd like it to be universally good on CRT, Plasma/LCD television and computer monitors.
    Thank you!

Do you mean pixelated, or do you mean that you are seeing combing artifacts?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deinterlacing#FieldCombinationDeinterlacing
The Apple DVD player does not deinterlace unless it is set to. And then it is not deinterlacing in the manner that gives you results similar to watching it on a CRT. When watching on a CRT, you are seeing 60 fields a second. To do that properly on the progressive display of your computer, the software would need to do a bob deinterlace, giving 60 complete frames a second. But the Apple DVD Player does not do that, so the motion looks wrong if you are looking at video rather than film.
You could try opening the same disc in VLC, and then select Deinterlace:bob from the video menu. I'm guessing it will look better.
For your plasma, it might be the same problem. Perhaps your DVD player has a setting involving progressive output or deinterlacing, and it is doing it wrong.

  • Jagged font problem - iMovie to iDVD to then burn a DVD

    I have iMovie 11 - v 9.0.2 and iDVD 7.1.1.
I've imported photos and audio into iMovie to create a slideshow with transitions.  All works well there.
When I then export to iDVD and preview it on screen, everything looks great.
But when I burn to DVD and play in a DVD player, the fonts look terrible - so they are not rendering properly.
Font I am using is Coolvetica.  It was in the iDVD package.  I opened up the iDVD package and copied the font into Fontbook to make it available in iMovie.
Any advice on what I'm doing wrong?
    neilc

Thanks. That solved the font problem.
However, the overall quality of my DVD when display on a 42 inch plasma HDTV is poor---looks like a photo that has been copied on a color copier--too contrasty and with color shifting to yellow.  I have created three new projects from the original video, which is 47 minutes long, one DVD in each of Best Performance, High Quality and Professional Quality. The Best Performance is terrible.  However, neither the High or the Professional quality is much better, other than the fonts looking better.  Both formats result in high contrast poor images and color shift to yellow.
I have shared the iMovie in the Media Browser in HD 1080 and in 720.
I noticed that all the DVDs didn't seen to write more than about 1/2 inch on the outside edge of the DVD. The size of the TS-Video folder on the High and Professional DVDs take up only 2.82 gig.  It seems that iDVD is compressing the video more than necessary, leaving a lot of unused space on a standard 4.7 gig DVD.
Interestingly, DVD's made of much shorter videos and produced in the Best Performance mode on iDVD look very good when played on the Plasma TV.
Both the High and the Professional DVDs look very good on my McBook Pro and MacMini screens.
Given the restriction of a standard DVD player (480p) I wonder if I should share the movie in this format.

  • Issues With Using a 50" Plasma as a Monitor.

    Hi there,
I'm using a brand new Mac Mini (just bought less than 3 hours ago) with my 50 inch plasma (th-50pz80u here are the specs: http://reviews.cnet.com/flat-panel-tvs/panasonic-viera-th-50pz80u/4507-6482_7-32 887126.html ) but when I connect it via a mini DVI adapter to DVI-to-HDMI cable to my TV, I get a image that's too big (menu bar and lower dock are missing) with overscan, or too small (I get black bars on the sides, and the top) without overscan.
