Virtual Machines extemely slow to load on brand new server.

We're about to put our first virtualized Windows 2012 Hyper-V server on a small business site. Everything went fine with the installation, but I've noticed that when loading up the virtual machines, the process takes hours... For example, I created a new
virtual machine with 4GBs of RAM, and installed Windows 7 64-bit edition from an ISO file... It took about two hours. I deleted this virtual machine and tried to create another Windows 7 64-bit virtual machine, this time using the actual DVD and it was just
as slow.. EVEN with all other VMs shut down... I have another test copy of Hyper-V for Windows 8 at home that I use for learning, so I tried installing the same Windows 7 64-bit ISO on this workstation and it installed in twenty minutes. And this is just a
workstation.
The server is a HP Proliant ML350 server with 24GBs RAM. If anything I would have expected the server to install the Windows 64-bit VM in twenty minutes, NOT the workstation !! On the face of it the only differences between the two systems is:
a) The server has two 500GB SAS drives, which are mirrored. There is no mirroring on the Windows 8 workstation.
b) The server had drive is partitioned in to a C: drive (for the host O/S) and a D: drive (for the virtual machines). There is only one partition on the Windows 8 workstation, which holds the operating system and the virtual machines.
Below is a graphic I drew up which I hope helps you visualise the hard drive setup.
This is a small site, so they wont pay for additional hard drives. Is there something about the way I have the disks set up that could cause the virtual machines to load slowly? Would it be better NOT to have two partitions on the host?
Thanks in advance for any advice offered.

It looks like you are trying to use 100% of your disk space.  Are the VHDs fixed size or dynamic?  How much free space is there on the host partition?  If the host partition is 80% full and you are using fixed VHDs, the system could be thrashing
itself trying to find free space, and that free space can get highly fragmented meaning no large blocks for storing.  Generally a disk is considered 'full' when it is at about 80% utilization.  If you are using fixed VHDs, you have 80% utilization
even before you take into consideration what the host needs.
Partitions don't change performance characteristics.  You still have the same number of read/write heads sharing the processing of the same amount of data.  That's why multiple disks can improve performance - multiple read/write heads going against
multiple data blocks.  So what you are describing has nothing to do with partitions versus no partitions.
Have you run any other IO load tests to see if there is a hardware problem with the RAID controller?  That is not unheard of.  What you are seeing is completely atypical for your environment.  That's why I am wondering about hardware issues.

  • Is it possible to have two or more virtual machines point to a shared instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 for systems administration?

    Hello All,
I am the Systems Admin for a production box running SQL Server 2008 R2.  I have been ask to do the following and and trying to figure out if it's even possible.
    1. The Production Server is named ProductionA
    2. Create 3 Administrator accounts on ProductionA each with access to the SQL Server instance on ProductionA.  Use Standard SQL Server login for credentials. i.e. Username/Password and assign the role sysadmin.
    3. Install 3 Virtual Machines on ProductionA each with Windows 2008 R2 64 bit operating system.
    4. For each Virtual Machine, Install SQL Management Studio and write down the IP Address assigned to each VM.
    5. Using Remote Desktop Connection, connect to each virtual machine to be able to manage the SQL Server.
Is this possible?  And, why am i doing it?  Because I DO NOT want the three people who will be having access to the production SQL Server to also have access to the primary host ProductionA.  Since I have to allow them to RDC into the box
to manage the SQL Server, I figure why not create a separate VM for each one of them and they can RDC into those instead.
    Does this make any sense?
Any tips are greatly appreciated.  The main reason for doing this is because the three people who will be accessing the box, I need to isolate each one of them and at the same time keep them off of the primary ProductionA.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello M,
Since you dont want the 3 guys to have access to Production machine A.You can install SQL Server client .By client i mean SQL server management studio(SSMS) on there local desktop and then create login for them in SQL Server.Open port on which your SQL server
is running for three of the machines so that they can connct. Now with SSMS installed on each machine each can connect to SQL server from there own machine.
I would also like you to be cautious with giving Sysadmin privilege to all three of them ,first please note down what task they would do and then decide what rights to be provided.
Your option will also work but you need to create 3 VM for that .Which is more tedious task.
    Hope this helps

  • Mouse not working in Virtual machine (win2k3 32 and 64 bit) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies

I have installed two virtual machines(win2k3 32bit and win2k3 64bit ) on Windows Server 2008 RC1 With Hyper-V Technologies (Beta) enterprise. Mouse is getting lost inside VM (using CTRL+ ATL +  LEFT ARROW  comes mouse control control in host OS).
Is there any setting to make mouse works? Insert Integration Serice setup Disk operation succeeds.

     all credits for mike_something
The problem is that the old mousedriver is hooked to the mouse device class.
To remove this dependency, go into the registry and navigate to the key
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E96F-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Remove the value msvmmouf from the UpperFilters Regvalue.
    Reboot....
    tadaaa!!
If you wish you can take out the drivers completely by deleting these registry hives completely :
    The driver:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\msvmmouf
    The Service:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VPCMap
The CopyHook Shell Extension: ( for folder access )
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{30C14BA C-122C-42ED-B319-1139DBF48EB8}\InProcServer32
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\CopyHookHandle rs\VPCCopyHook
After a reboot you can delete the "Virtual Machine Additions" folder from program files...
    Good Luck!

  • Intallation of 11g in Brand New server

    Hi Gurus,
This is the first time i am installing the 11g on Brand new Windows 2008 64 bit server. I need help and info what are the prerequist i need to have and start the OBIEE 11g installation on the Windows 2008 64 bit server.
It is brand new server nothing installed exccept the Operating system in that.
    Regards
    Ali

    Ali,
There were several people who have experience this exact scenario as you explained.
Many overcame this by simply stopping the installation and restarting it. Most say that the second time through that it completed the installation without a problem.
I personally have installed OBI 11g 30+ times at this point and I am a bit superstitious when it comes to a Windows install. I believe that moving the cursor every few minutes during the OBI 11g installation prevents the freeze-up. I know, I know... but I've had it freeze up once or twice and now on a Windows install when I do that it hasn't frozen up since. Very scientific, right?
Also, you mentioned that you installed 11gR2 but did you set the loopback apdapter properly if the DB is on the same machine you were conducting the installation on?
    Cheers,
    Christian

  • Java virtual machine very slow: why?

Since I have upgraded Tiger to Leopard, the startup of the Java virtual machine is unbelievably slow: for example, just executing java -version for the first time requires almost one minute. This happens only the first time the JVM is started: after that, everything seems to work properly. Any idea of what is the problem? Thank you.

I don't have this problem at all.
Which version of Unix are you using? And which version of Java are you using on the Unix computer? How old is your Computer?

  • Slow FCP7 Startup on Brand New Install

I had a problem with corrupted .mov files exported and just generally being slogged down by the beachball of death in motion & on the FCP timeline.
So, I erased the system hard drive and reinstalled from scratch. The only things installed are FCP7 and my Blackmagic Intensity capture card. Even before I installed the Blackmagic drivers (which hook into FCP), it still took 3 minutes 40 seconds to start FCP - that is BAD.
I have a deadline tomorrow so have to go with it now, but suggestions? Am running 10.6.8 OSX on an 8 core 2.26 GHz machine with 16 GB ram. It should be much better than this.
I will fess up to a couple of things. I did not yet remove the Blackmagic board from my computer to see if that fixes it. Maybe after the deadline. AND I did install some CHV filter plug ins that I must have to meet the deadline, but they did not affect the start up time at all.
I got my capturing done, maybe I will just remove the card for the editing and see if things get better. The slow start up has me worried that I will suffer more of the corrupted .mov files (9 GB standard definition 8 minute videos !!)

That problem which I thought was the controlling symtom is fixed by an actual genius at the stupidly named genius bar. It turns out that my Thumbnail Cache was corrupted.
All that had to be done was to delete the (on my machine) two files in there and bam it starts up in 5-12 seconds like it should. The solution was found in this thread titled: "FCP6 very slow to load help!" at discussions.apple.com/thread/1712742
How the cache was corrupt on my brand new clean install is a mystery that when and if solved may resolve the root cause of my bad/jerky .mov file export problem. But that is for another day. I'll limp through the deadline tonight and start over next week.
Thanks everyone for the replies. It looked like a bad hard drive right up to the cache fix.

  • Super-slow internet browsing on brand-new iMac

I posted this somewhere else and got told to post it here - so here goes:
I just bought my iMac on Valentine's Day. I'm brand new to the world of Mac, and very excited!
However - I'm a little upset because it is taking FOREVER for websites to load on Safari - sometimes up to a full minute for a page to load entirely. Sometimes, it simply times out! My internet access is through broadband service provided by my cable company; all computers in the house (including my PC laptop) are wirelessly connected. No problems with any of them BUT the iMac. Also, all other applications on the iMac run very fast indeed.
I really don't think that at $1,500, internet browsing should be this slow on an iMac right out of the box!!! Is there anything I can do? Is this a known problem with a known fix? Or should I just take it back and exchange it? (and migrate all my old files AGAIN!)
Thanks for any help/advice you can give.

Try the command under the Safari menu in Safari to +Reset Safari+. I would select all the reset options.
If that does not help, try downloading another browser as a test to see if this is a general problem or something specific to Safari.

  • 2008R2 Virtual machine shutting down unexpected on Hyper-V 2012 server

I have a problem where one of my 2008 R2 virtual servers are shutting down unexpected every Friday at more or less the same time. This has happen 2 Fridays in a row now and the time is 13:01:30 and 13:01:10. I did some investigation on the event viewer and
it tells me the following: (Error) The previous system shutdown at 01:01:10 PM on ‎2014/‎08/‎01 was unexpected.  Event ID: 6008 which I have goggled and did not find much on this ID?    I also found the following event more or less the same
time as the first one: (Critical) The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. Event ID: 41.  In most posts it looks like if it could
be hardware related? But how do I justify this on a virtual machine?
Some Infrastructure background: It is a 2008 R2 virtual server running on 2012 Hyper-V, 2012 server. SCVMM is not configured so all administration is done through Hyper-V manager. The virtual machine is backup up by Symantec backup exec and the Full backup
only start at 23:00pm night time. No scheduled shut-downs are configured and all servers are running on UPS power, the virtual server are also configured to boot up automatically after any failure. But in this case the server is completely shut-down and I
have to manually start the server up again.
I hope there are somebody who can give some guidance on my problem?
    Regards
    Juan Krynie

    Hi Sam
    Thanks for the reply!
Yes, all disk space is on the host, I have 2 hosts running Hyper V each with their own set of virtual servers, I am planning a cluster in the near future, but for now all disk space for all virtual server are on the host, there is more than enough disk space
left on all drives. Please below output from command, I only posted first few lines as there are to many lines.

  • Https sites slow to load for IE in Server 2008 R2

    Hello All,
I have an issue with our new server where https sites are slow to load or do not load at all in IE 9 or Google Chrome. Using Firefox any page loads fine. I have tested many things, reinstalled IE, downgraded to IE8, upgraded to IE10, checked
the forums, tested SSL settings and still get the same issue.
For example if I open IE, navigate to google.com I will get a "waiting for google.com" that will sometimes take 5 minutes to load; the same behavior is noticed on Google Chrome but not Firefox. I did notice that if I installed google.com
SSL certificate that the page would load normally. I have tested the same method on another Server 2008 R2 box with no issues. I am not sure what the issue could be. Any ideas or direction would be greatly appreciated since this issue is directly affecting
    business operations for my client.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
We can add the sites to trusted site and clear temp files for test. Detail steps are in the following KB.

  • Can't launch Virtual Machines in Hyper-V after sysprep on host (Server 2012)

    Hi all!
I am setting up lab environments for official Microsoft Cources. I just took a new approach which is to prepare a machine with all the VMs in Hyper-V, basically I set up the whole virtual machine environment ready-to-go, then the last thing is to sysprep
the machine and then roll it out to a whole classroom.
Acording to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2249906, this has to do with the /generalize-switch of sysprep, which is doing some spooky with SIDs that is all logical.
My question is, how can I make sure that all the VMs in the image can start up properly after the redeployment of the image?
Below is the error-msg when trying to start the virtual machine after sysprep on the host:

Below is the error-msg when trying to start the virtual machine after sysprep on the host:

You should re-import the VMs on new hosts that have been deployed from a sysprepped image.  This is due to the unique security GUIDs set on each VHD which can't be re-used on a duplicate host.

  • V6.01, Windows 7, click on icon, "firefox is already running but not responding" Task manager doesn't know about it. I can't quit it or get it to load. Brand new install. What to do?

Brand new Lenovo computer, Windows 7 Home. New install of Firefox 6.0.1, set as default browser, don't launch when I click done. Icon appears in tray. I click the icon, and a message says "firefox is running but not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing process, or reboot". It's not obviously running. I can't find a way to make it quit. Task manager doesn't list it as a current application. Uninstall using the control panel uninstall function and then reinstalling gives the same message. Rebooting doesn't fix the problem and gives the same message. Firefox had been working until I tried to update my bookmarks.

No can do. I can delete the current profile and install Firefox, which should create a new blank profile. The message still says "Firefox is already running." I can place my old profile in the proper folder, and Firefox will still be already running. I can't actually use Firefox, because even though the message says it is running, there is nothing on the screen I can access.
After uninstalling Firefox, deleting the two items left in the Programs folder, and deleting the profile again, it still didn't work. I then got frisky and from the Roaming folder I deleted the Mozilla folder which contains the Firefox folder which contains the now empty Profiles folder. That worked, and a new set of folders with a new blank profile were created. So apparently it was the empty folders that never got deleted that were causing the issue.
Thanks for your suggestion. It got me thinking.

  • Slow Wi-Fi on brand new iMac

    Hey all,
Recently just purchased a brand new iMac, very excited as its literaly my first Mac computer ever.
However, when I switched it on and started playing with it, i realised the speed of Wi-Fi is atrocious, compared to my windows laptop sitting next to me.
Some trouble shooting that i've performed already:
    Changed locations
    Disabled ethernet and firewire
    Changed DNS
    Resetted modem
Any more suggestions and help would be great!

Try a different Channel on Airport.
    Open Airport Utility    /Applications/Utilities
Select the device on the left then click Manual Setup.
Then select AirPort from the menu then select the Wireless tab.
Try Automatic. If that doesn't help, click that pop up menu and try another channel.
    Then click Update.
Congrats on your new iMac !!

  • Dozens of drivers will not load on brand new HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC. Win 7 Ultimate N

I recenty paid for a brand new  HP ENVY 14t-1000 CTO Notebook PC.It had entirely too much bloatware and I have doe fresh install's hundreds of times. The installs went fine but only 4 drivers from the driver page for this product on Win 7 will install. I am without the Wifi, Ethernet, Sound, Display, Smart Card Reader, and about 10 more that I am not sure what they are. I googled the PCI ID's of some and found what should be the driver as in the Wifi is the Broadcom driver from the support page for this product but after the install nothing happens. Then you get the pop up that says there was the program may not have installed correctly. If I point the device directly at the directory for any of these it says driver not found. I have never had such a time installing drivers for a supported OS. It came with Win 7 on it. I am just trying to perform a clean install. I will gladly provide the device ID's for anyone at HP that can give me a driver that will work. The ones on the appropriate page do not. I know I am missing the IDT sound driver, The realtek ethernet driver, I believe the ATI HD Video driver, and the Broadcom Wireless driver for starters but once again all version new and legacy on the drivers page DO NOT install.  Help. I am this close to calling HP and returning this thing. I only received it today and would have no qualms about sending it back.

Hi: This is a peer to peer forum.  No one on this forum is authorized to respond on behalf of HP to any posts made here. I looked at the support and driver page for the 14t-1000, and that model is 5 years old according to the release dates of drivers listed there. Ar you sure that is the model number? Can you please post the product number for the PC?  The product number can be found on the same sticker as the serial number. You can also post the top line of each hardware ID's for each device needing drivers. I'll see what I can find. The driver directly from Realtek should install the card reader (PCI Device).  You want the first driver on the list. http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=15&PFid=25&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

... but I am unable to locate any reference to the specific error in these forums or via my friendly neighbourhood Google.
    Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Well, like I mentioned, if DNS is not properly configured, all bets are off. And again, if you start services before making it an OD master, you could be asking for trouble. You may be able to fix the installation, but I'd seriously consider starting over.
You might be able to fix what you have well enough to make it work, but what happens in 6 months when it gets flaky about something. You may end up wondering of there was something wrong to begin with.
    So yes, I'd start over.

  • Exceedingly slow download speeds on brand new mbp os lion

    Hi,
There seems to be a lot of posted issues with slow download speeds on the MBP.  I purchased mine 2 weeks ago (Oct 2011), a 13" core i7.  My download speeds are a tiny fraction of what I get with a 10 year old Dell.  Reading the posts on this issue, they all seem to be going in circles.  I am technically very savvy although new to apple.  I did at one point get an acceptable increase in download speeds after manually entering the gateway, subnet and DNS.  However two days later download speeds have reduced from 17.8 MB/s to 37kb/s.  The right now the Dell is screaming a 702MB download.  The MBP slug is telling me it will take 5 hours.
Has anyone ever resolved his issue?

So as mentioned above I tried connecting to the router using a wire instead of wireless..
many sites work fine....but some do not
    Example
    works fine
    Apple.com
    gmail.com
does not work fine...the page does not load up and gets stuck in the very beginning....
    www.CNN.com
    http://www.sportsauthority.com/home/index.jsp
sportauthority has flash embedded on that page....CNN, I do not know...
could it have anything to do with Flash ?
