Virtual wireless controller
Hi.. i have running cisco vWLC controller in my location A, its working perfectly here. Now i have another location B where i have APs registered with controller in location A. I have created another WLAN and set location B dhcp server assign location B network ip. But issue is that when we connect to this wlan it gets connected but no ip gets assigned. wireless controlloer can reach to location B dhcp server, there is no connectivity issue b/w these.
what else settings do i need to set so that clients can get ip through dhcp.
Is location B WLAN configured with local or central switchinng?
If traffic is central switched (tunneled back to the WLC in location A) that may the problem in your case. I assume location A and B are in separate broadcast domains, so there should be an issue with the dhcp discovers from clients.
You should try to local switch the traffic for WLAN B or if it has to be central switched you should switch locally dhcp packets from clients.

Cisco Aironet 3502i and Virtual Wireless Controller- Question
Hello everyone,
As soon, I purchased two Cisco 3502i and Cisco 1142 however, two issue are that I don't have controller and smartnet. As my purpose, it using for Home Use but house with 2,500 Sq ft with two floor and new 24x24ft garage with two floor. I put two Cisco 3502i for garage and one cisco 1142 in house on second floor. Separated for multi media, gaming, streaming high resolution video, parts, and downloads programmings online. It will run with Cisco Catalyst Express 500 with 24 ports (4 POE) and two gigabit ports. In house, it have Dell Poweredge 2850, Cisco Catalyst Express 500 with 24 ports POE and 2 ports gigabit.
I thought to make my own developing with my first time using Wireless Controller. I wanted to try out with Virtual WLC on Dell Poweredge 2850 running ESXi 4.1.
Specs for Dell Poweredge 2850:
- 2x Intel Xeon Dual Core 3.8 GHz
- 4GB RAM (Will upgrade to 12GB soon)
- 2x 146GB and 2x 36GB SCSI
- 2x 1 Gbps built in and 4x 1 Gbps PCI-X
Developing with Untangle and pfSense to make it support with LADP and VLAN to both Cisco Express 500 using 4 gbps PCI-X. I have read the requipment list to use Virtual WLC but it seem met the requipment for my 2850. If someone offer me to get Virtual WLC and IOS from their, I accept to "borrow" it. I do go college which is Rochester Institute of Technology at New York and my major is Applied Computer Technology. I live here at Hampton Road, Virginia. Just in case if you might know about RIT. I just start to learning myself with Cisco books.
I have a question:
- Is there possible to get trial or full version of Virtual WLC?
- Is there possible to get Lightweight or Autonomous IOS for Cisco 1142 and 3502i?
- Does it supported Dell PowerEdge 2850?
- Does 3502i support Autonomous? (Not actually but I have researched around online about that it will work with 1262's IOS)
Thanks

I have a question:
- Is there possible to get trial or full version of Virtual WLC?
No. You will need a SmartNet contract (or a freshly purchased device) to obtain software from cisco. Nobody will provide this to you.
- Is there possible to get Lightweight or Autonomous IOS for Cisco 1142 and 3502i?
No. You will need a SmartNet contract (or a freshly purchased device) to obtain software from cisco.
Nobody will provide this to you.
- Does it supported Dell PowerEdge 2850?
Cisco doesn't go in to great detail regarding the actual Hardware requirements of the vWLC (as far as ESX Host requirements). Primarily, making sure you are running ESX 4.x/5.x is necessary. The vWLC provisions 2Gb of RAM and 8GB of thick provisioned storage, so if your host can accomodate I don't see any reason it wouldn't work.
- Does 3502i support Autonomous? (Not actually but I have researched around online about that it will work with 1262's IOS)
Yes, with the latest versions of IOS 15.2(2)JB, full functionality in autonomous can be achieved on the 1550, 3500, and 3600 series APs

Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller
Hello,
Does the Cisco Virtual WLC support the 1230AP?
There is a list of supported AP's from the data sheet the1230 isnt listed, maybe shoould assume no support?!
http://http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/prod/collateral/wireless/ps6302/ps8322/ps12723/data_sheet_c78-714543.html
Regards,
Garry.no, it doesn't. But it has to do with the 7.3 code, as that is the lowest code the vWLC can run.

Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller Vs Hardware Controller
Our WiSM needs to be upgraded.
We were given a choice of virtual (cheaper) or hardware controller.
We were told that the virtual controller is designed differently and the usual traffic does not go through the controller.
question:
how does this impact security or other features of cisco wireless solution?
and if you have any other comments/experience with the virtual controller
THANKSI can't really comment on the security question, other than, it depends on your network design :)
Regarding features, if you already manage a controller and know the required features, you find here a good comparison of all controllers and its features:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/wireless/buyers-guide.html#~controllers
I think the feature in question was "Central Mode" which the virtual one lacks. The more modern (or actually the way it was before we had controllers) is "Flex Connect". In this mode the data will be put in the correct VLAN directly at the port the access point is connected to. That means that you will need to configure a Trunk port on the Switch for each AP. Depending on your building security, that could be seen as an issue. You could protect that with 802.1x between AP and Switch. -
Cisco Virtual Wireless Controller licensing
Hello everyone!
We are about to start using vWLC, currently using default 60 days evaluation license
There are couple of questions regarding licensing:
1. Will the serial number change if we migrate the virtual machine from one host to another or if it rehosts automatically?
2. If yes, what to do with the license? It is tied to the serial number as far as I know. Is there any way to generate a new license when the serial number changes?
Thank you!I have received a license for vWLC but I entered the wrong Serial Number during the registration process and I have just realized it. I tried to rehost the license on cisco.com, entered UDI and correct serial number, received the new license and when I try to install it I received this error:
Failed license installation at index:0 : UDI in license line does not match with the local udi
My current UDI is AIR-CTVM-K9, but during the rehost process this UDI was rejected and I used L-LIC-CTVM-UPG. I successfully received the new license file, but I can not install it with the error described before.
Is there anything we can do about it? -
Virtual Wireless LAN Controllers
Hi Guys,
Are all APs supported by Physical WLC also supported by the Virtual WLC? or they support a selective few?
Thanks in Advance
ChandimalHi Chandimal,
Adding to Leo, vWLC only support FlexConnect mode AP.
Here is the WLC compatibility matrix where you can find which AP model support under which version of WLC code.

Virtual interface ip of Wireless controller
Hi,
In our wireless controller, there is a virtual interface having ip 192.168.100.1.
when tracing the packets, we saw this ip being reflected in sniffer as dhcp server address instead of original dhcp server ip.
The controller interfaces of ssid have original dhcp server ip ( 172.16.31.2 ) mentioned in them, this is where clients get there ip from.
In this case, why does virtual interface ip (192.168.100.1) is seen as dhcp server in sniffer traces instead of original dhcp server 172.16.31.2
Appreciate all inputs to help me understand this.If you have dhcp proxy enabled in the WLC, which is default, the WLC will proxy dhcp and it uses the virtual IP address. If you look at a client that is connected to the wireless and on a windows machine you look at the ipconfig /all, you will also see that the dhcp server is the virtual IP address if the WLC. Dhcp proxy can be disabled as long as you dint have the WLC being used as the dhcp server, or else it it's required to have dhcp proxy enabled.
Virtual IP is also used for mobility and guest portal page.

Hi!
I try to configure a Cisco 5508 Wireless controller and 25 Air-lap1041 to use as VoIP and data. I read documents, manuals, etc, but the AP doesn't charge the configuration, or not conect with the Wireless Controller, why? No Radius server present, only WPA security.howto, please...
I try to put a static ip in the LAP, with lwapp or capwap command, (LWAPP/CAPWAP ap ip address direccion mascara) and the AP returns "You should configure Domain and Name Server from controller CLI/GUI." and i can't change the name of the AP (Command is disabled).

Hola:
I buy a gigabit switch. I connect the service-port to gigabit switch, and laptop to gigabit switch. I used 192.168.1.x ip address (192.168.1.157 to service-port and 192.168.1.233 to wired port on laptop, well, the laptop has two ip adress, 192.168.1.233 and 209.165.200.2, and the laptop works ok. Ping to 209.165.200.230 -ip address of management interface- and ping to 209.165.200.203 -ip address for AP, is assigned by DHCP of WLC. And i connect the ap to gigabit switch, and the wlc assigns well an ip direction.
I post the run-config and sysinfo log. The gigabit switch is tp-link model tl-sg1005d, no configuration.
Before the logs, I see this message from AP:
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4 ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?
Hola:
He comprado un switch gigabit.
*Apr 19 23:10:20.211: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: This AP is not supported in controller
version 6.0.199.4 ---->What's mean that? Is it compatible the ap with the WLC? ¿Es compatible el AP con el WLC?

Setting up 2100 wireless controller
I have just taken delivery of a Cisco 2106 Wireless LAN controller and two Cisco 802.11a/b/g Lightweight Access Point devices.
I have connected the Controller to the PC and I am tyrying to configure the box. The network we have is as follows:
we have a fixed IP address on the router and all workstations have fixed IP addresses of the form 10.0.0.X and get DNS from the windows SBS 2003. The router default gateway is 10.0.0.1.
so to the config of the Wireless controller... I need to know the following: (my comments in [ ] ??? means I have no idea at all) please excuse all my dumb questions
• A management interface (DS Port or network interface port) IP address, such as 10.40.0.4 [can I use any free IP addres of the form 10.0.0.x ]
• A management interface netmask address, such as 255.255.255.0. [same as our netwrok sub?]
• A management interface default router IF address, such as 10.40.0.5 [again something of the form 10.0.0.x? - how is this different from DS Port?]
• A VLAN identifier if the management interface is assigned to a VLAN, such as 40 or 0 for an untagged VLAN.[????]
• A management interface port, such as 1. [again ????]
• A management interface DHCP server IP address, such as 10.10.0.6 (the IP address of the default DHCP server that will supply IP addresses to clients and the management interface. [we do not use DHCP - all clients have fixed IPs so what do I do here?]
• An access point manager interface IP address, such as 10.40.0.7. [what is this and what should I use given our network setup?]
• A virtual gateway IP address (a fictitious, unassigned IP address, such as 1.1.1.1, used by all Cisco wireless LAN controller Layer 3 security and mobility managers). [can I use 1.1.1.1 or something else?]
• A Cisco wireless LAN controller mobility or RF group name, such as rfgrp40 if required. An RF group name can contain up to 19 printable ASCII characters. [can I use anything and if so where and when would I use this]
• An 802.11 network name (SSID), such as wlanl. An SSID can contain up to 32 printable, case-sensitive ASCII characters. [again, can I use anything and if so where and when would I use this]
• Whether or not to allow static IP addresses from clients, either Yes or No. [???]
- Yes is more convenient, but has lower security (session can be hijacked).
- No is less convenient, but has higher security and works well for Windows XP devices.
• RADIUS server IP address, communications port, and secret if you are configuring a RADIUS server, such as 10.40.0.3, 1812, and mysecretcode. [again help ???]
• The country code for this installation. Enter help to see a list or refer to the Cisco Wireless LAN Controller Configuration Guide for country code information. This guide is available at CISCO.com [I am in the USA]
• Status of the 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g networks, either enabled or disabled [???]
• Status of radio resource management (RRM), either enabled or disabled [???]
THANKYOU FOR ANY HELP!!!!Mike,

Wireless Controller locking down User per SSID
I am using Wireless Controller 4112. We use WPA enterprise mode for authentication and encryption via Microsoft IAS server and MS AD domain.
My question is how to lock down a user to a specific SSID? I would guess that this is via some vendor specific radius attributes, am I right? And if so, what would be the name (and ID) for the attributes?
Thanks in advance.Making progress in setting up the wireless controller with multiple VLAN and WLAN/SSID. I create a virtaul interface at the controller and assign a VLAN number to it. The controller mgmt port is also set to a trunk port. Create a new SSID WLAN and have it mapped to the new virtual interface. Things work good.
The new problem I am trying to solve is how to prevent wired users to access the controller admin web interface via the virtual interface IP. I try create ACL and map it to the virtual interface. It doesn't seem working. -
Virtual WLAN Controller Guest Anchor
We are planning a WLAN upgrade and the security policy is to forward wireless Guest user traffic to the DMZ controllers. We are now considering the Virtual WLAN Controller and all AP's will register with the virtual controllers and we will use Flexconnect for Staff and internal traffic that will switch their traffic onto the local switch.
We wish to forward the guest traffic to the DMZ Guest Anchor controller which will be a 5508 controller. This will also offer Office Extend AP service.
I have looked at teh virtual controller docs and not very clear if this deployment model is supported. Below is a diagram of what we wish to deploy and can anyone advise if thsi is a supprted deployment model.Well you can use the vWLC to anchor to a 5508, but not the other way around. So if you use the DMZ 5508 for OfficeExtend, you will not be able to anchor the traffic back to the inside. Cisco doesn't support reverse anchoring for a Remote-LAN in OfficeExtend and requires you to actually have the OfficeExtend AP's connect to an inside WLC. In v7.0.x you were able to do this reverse anchor, but it was removed on later codes.

Where did you hear that there is an appliance can be configured to a WLC?
The WLC comes with its own hardware OR as a virtual machine image. The virtual WLC however has a lot of limitations.
So, like Scott answered you, the answer to your questoin is "No".

Access points As a Wireless Controller
Dear
I need a proposal for the fully meshed 9 wireless access points. In which
One can behave as wireless controller
Dual Radio connectivity
Poe on each AP or extra port of Ethernet
Warm Regards
Hassan Sarfraz AliI see what you're asking, Since virtual controller concept is evolving and no one wants single point of failure i.e., single controller for smaller deployment and remote offices, what you're asking is quite logical for local and flex mode. For Mesh, considering awpp convergence may not suite is what i believe.
Until 7.3 Cisco don't have this feature. Whatever you're looking could be what Cisco's future making or already work in progress, you may want to check with Cisco via TAC. -
How do I configure the 2504 Wireless controller with AP?
I recently purchase the 2504 wireless controller and the 1602i AP. I was able to do the basic setup of the controller and can now access the web interface, but the AP is not being detected and I am unable to add it.
First of all: 1602 AP need minimum software version on WLC: 7.4.100.0
paste this info:
sh sysinfo from WLC
sh version from AP.
Did you create a DHCP pool for APs to get IP ?
Try to to be keep AP and WLC on same subnet.

Can I move a Virtual Domain Controller from one host(Win Server 2008 R2) to another (Win Server 2012 R2) ? Are there any issues?
I also had this error: "Setup cannot continue. Your computer will now restart, and your previous version of Windows will be restored."
trying to do a in-place upgrade of a Domain Controller Windows 2008 R2 to Windows 2012 R2.
The problem was the separated System Reserved Partition. After I removed using this instructions:
http://jacobackerman.blogspot.com/2012/12/how-to-remove-system-reserved-partition.html
The upgrade ran ok, and now have my DC as Windows 2012 R2.
Hope that helps!.
