VirtualBox vboxdrv module, not a problem, just a question

Well, ive installed Virtualbox, and ive got to modprove vboxdrv to get that module loaded so VirtualBox can run... Ive thought to put this on the rc.conf, so i dont need to modprove ir every time i boot and want to use vbox. But whats the drawback of having a module loaded always?, i mean, does it consumes resources as much as considering this? or i just add it to my rc.conf? I dont use vbox everyday, just isolated use... so for the moment modproving it everytime i need it doesnt hurt... , thnx!

Yes, it will consume resources, mainly RAM... It's up to you if that usage is worth savings by loading and unloading all the time. Personally, I just leave it loaded. One less thing to worry about.

I update my system today and when I try to run Virtualbox...

I already had this trouble before and this was the fix
    # modprobe vboxdrv
    But it doesn't work anymore
    Any ideas?
Edit: This just get fixed by itself when restaring my PC. Sorry

  • Not a problem, just curious

Hey all... a few times now I have packed up the Apple TV and headed over to a buddy's place to watch some movies. Up until last night, didn't really put much thought into it, but last night it suddenly occurred to me...
I never set the ATV up to work on his network.
As the film drew to a close, I became curious so checked out the network settings: not quite what I was expecting. I had the ATV connected to his Airport network via RJ-45, but according to the network settings I was actually connected to my home network, taking my IP address from the DHCP here, using the DNS here, etc...
Hmm, thought I, that could be why the trailers took so long to open up..
So just curious... I was way out of range of my own Airport network: is the ATV able to access Back to My Mac, and connected that way??
Again, not a problem. Just curious.

According to your original post, you mention being out of range of your Airport network, thus I thought that you were using wireless.
Also, I'm not sure what you mean by:
"according to the network settings I was actually connected to my home network, taking my IP address from the DHCP here, using the DNS here"
How could you tell? If both you and your friend left your routers' using the default 192.168.x.x IP address range (or picked the same IP address range), the network settings would be exactly the same at both places.

  • Not a problem just cool to think about

Ok so ive been having problems with my computer and i had the computer out in the garage and dad said he wanted to try the 120v converter he had in his truck to see if it would power my computer and monitor so we hooked it up.. ran perfect
it is a very nice system, he wanted to try it out so we would know if i could play whatever during the trip to California   now think about it..
    Im running 7 hard drives the Athlon 64 3200+ the MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R, 1Gb of Corsair XMS pc3200, Radeon 9800XT. 1 DVD-rom 1DVD-+RW
we figured out that im only using 185 or so Watts, we could easily run 3 computers while on the trip, btw not taking a truck. taking a camper/ motor home

this isnt one of those cheap walmart brands this is a heavy duty converter
plus theres gonna be a big marine battery behind it 3x the size of normal batterys 3x as heavy too   and i have to lift it
but i might bring along a UPS but not the one that i bought that cant keep up with my system it keeps shutting its self off like the house lost power, its just a faulty unit

  • Virtualbox doesn't compiles "vboxdrv" module for 2.6.24 kernel

I installed Virtualbox, however I cannot launch any OS because the vboxdrv module doesn't exists for the latest kernel (I found another module for the 2.6.23 kernel); so the GUI says that I should execute this:
    /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
However that file doesn't exists. I already tried to uninstall virtualbox and reinstalling from pacman, but still no luck.
What should I do? Is this a bug?
    Thanks in advance.

I think that's where the confusion  is.  When I got the package from AUR it had:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 ralvez users  217 2008-01-08 15:58 interfaces
    -rw-r--r-- 1 ralvez users 3596 2008-01-20 11:38 PKGBUILD
    -rwx------ 1 ralvez users  174 2007-12-30 04:23 vbox_build_module
    -rw-r--r-- 1 ralvez users 2384 2007-12-30 07:39 vbox.install
    -rw-r--r-- 1 ralvez users 2179 2007-12-30 07:31 vboxnet.patch
So the patch file is there (in bold text) ... and is not executable is a text file. That's why I'm asking if I have to do something with it to make the whole thing work.
Since it is just a plain text file if I try to use it as an upgrade patch it fails with error:
loading package data... error: error while reading package vboxnet.patch: Unrecognized archive format: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or wide character
error: failed to add target 'vboxnet.patch'
So, I'm stuck. I see no way to solve the problem.
    R.
Edit: On re-reading your post I wonder what package from core are you referring to? I was under the impression that when we use AUR we are "fetching" files not from core but form the AUR source.
    Am I wrong?

  • Virtualbox vboxdrv problem

    Hello,
I didn't use Virtualbox for quite some time and when I try to start a VM I got the :
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Ubuntu.
Failed to open/create the internal network 'HostInterfaceNetworking-eth0' (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).
Failed to attach the network LUN (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).
One of the kernel modules was not successfully loaded. Make sure that no kernel modules from an older version of VirtualBox exist. Then try to recompile and reload the kernel modules by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).
Well since the kernel version changed to 3.X I did a vboxbuild to rebuild the kernel module. Then I reload the module with a modprobe vboxdrv. But I still have the same error ( even after rebooting ).
My problem is that I have no vboxdrv in /etc/rc.d therefore I can't do the vboxdrv setup as asked. Even after reinstalling Virtualbox with pacman still no vboxdrv in sight. Anyone knows why ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Nolhian

    Thanks this works
Just read the wiki page again and saw "vboxdrv and vboxnetflt should be in the MODULES=() section of your /etc/rc.conf ", missed it earlier. Is this new ? Worked fine a few months ago just with the vboxdrv module alone. Should i add vboxnetadp too ?

    hi guys!
i recently installed virtualbox-ose using pacman -Sy virtualbox. it installed fine and i was able to create a vm. when i start my vm i get this error:

i could not find /etc/init.d/vboxdrv. when i do for a search for vboxdrv, it shows me a vobxdrv.ko and its located on my original arch kernel 2.6.25-ARCH. im using a custom kernel. how do i tell virtualbox to build the modules in my custom kernel and not on the arch kernel. i remember i had the same problem with ndiswrapper before that ndis wrapper built the ndiswrapper module on my arch kernel instead of my custom kernel. any ideas?

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox-host-dkms module not compatible with Linux 3.17rc

Using the linux-mainline package from aur, was unable to get dkms to compile the vboxdrv module. Mainline is currently at around 3.17rc3, didn't work at rc1 either.
Apparently a patch has already been made, it is available at:
    https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic … 50#p296650
Loaded the abs system and applied the patch from the forum:
    https://forums.virtualbox.org/download/ … p?id=13399
Patch works like a charm. I have compiled the package, if anyone else would like to save some cpu cycles and time, I wouldn't mind uploading it if there is somewhere it can be posted.

    Thanks wonder, that did it.
My Arch install has been running so smooth and maintenance free, (or my old age),
I actually had to refer to my notes for this!!!
HMmmm... A good refresher exercise though.

It should not be a problem, as long as you are careful. Note the delete settings option when uninstalling firefox will delete bookmarks etc for ALL installed versions of firefox.
Firefox attempts to retain the profile information, that include bookmarks etc when updating. It may still be prudent to consider other backup methods not entirely dependent on firefox.
The firefox 4 beta will install by default in a slightly different location, you are then able to run either the current or the beta version of firefox. It is recommended you set up a new profile for the new version of firefox. see

Originally we were getting the error that the phone could not connect. Then, after deleting the account multiple times and re-adding it again, the error message CHANGED to having to log in to Yahoo and authorize.
When we went to Yahoo in a regular browser and logged in there was an alert telling us about connection attempts so it disabled mobile/iphone connectivity. It required that we change our password FIRST.
Then, we went in to Manage Apps and Webpages and saw that iPhone was not there but Facebook was.
After all of this went back to the phone and deleted then re-added the account again and SUCCESS!
It now also shows up on the Yahoo Manage Apps and Webpages.
Hope this helps someone else. Please consider giving me points if it does or like the post.

It has been indicated that both of those cameras will be supported in the final release of Camera Raw 8.7. But there is no announced release date. There never is. I assume it will be before December 31. But that is only my guess based on the fact that the release candidate expires then.
