VISA close error

Hello,
I use simultaneously the attached 3 VIs. Each of them is a PID loop, reading data from some Keithleys, and driving the loops using Keithley 2400 sourcemeters. So there are 3 2400 sourcemeters in my project. The data communication is via GPIB (NI HI-USB GPIB controller)
I use the official VISA drivers for the Keithley 2400s (some minor modifications in the "configure output" VI, I use double precision instead of single precision as in the official driver).
Everything works perfect, the three VIs run parallel, no communication error, so all is good.
But, randomly, lets say 50 percent of the time, when I want to shut down only one of the VIs, I get the VISA Close error in the error output.
Here is a screenshot when I get this error: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/8148153/Untitled.jpg
What can cause this such a error? The same VISA drivers are not allowed to be used parallel?
Thanks for help!

Hello,
The Automatically close VISA sessions is unchecked (i think it is also the default state). So this cannot cause the experienced problem. So far this problem is not that serious, since I am at just the prototyping phase in my project (that is why i run the 3 VIs separated), the final MAIN VI will close all the VISA resources at once at shut down.
But I like to learn, so i am still curious about what this strange problem with VISA...

  • The TCP/IP connection does not closed after a VISA close

I am using the VISA functions to communicate with a Sorenson SGA power supply from a Windows XP computer.  I have the VISA TCPIP Resource defined in MAX and use this alias name in the VISAResourceName for the input to the VISA Open.  Then I write a SCPI command, such as *IDN?, and read the repsonse.  Then I close the VISA session.  When I look at the TCP statistics using the netstat -n command, I get the following response:
Proto           Local Address                 Foreign Address    State
    TCP            10.10.10.9:3881              10.10.10.1:111       TIME_WAIT
    TCP            10.10.10.9:3882              10.10.10.1:111       TIME_WAIT
If I query the ID again, I get 2 more TCP connections with different local ports numbers.  Every time I perform the query, I get 2 more TCP port connections at different local ports.  It takes about 1 minute for the TIME_WAIT's to time out.  If I query the Sorenson enough, I can fill up my allowable local port connections.
    1)  Why doesn't the TCP connections go away after the VISA Close?
    2) Should I be opening and closing the VISA session every time I want to talk to the Sorenson?
    3) What does the VISAResourceName control or constant actual do to resolve the alias into a IP?
This Sorenson power supply does not seem to be very quick to repsond to TCP requests.  If I set the timeout on the VISA Open to anything less the 100ms, I cannot get a session open every time.  It will fail about 50% of the time.
Has anyone had experince talking to the Sorenson power Supplies using VISA TCPIP?
    Thanks,
    Julia

    Hi Julia,
Let me try answering your questions here.
    1) I'm actually currently looking into this to see if this is expected behavior, and I'll definitely post back to let you know what I find.
    2) You do not need to close a VISA session everytime you want to communicate with the device, you can leave the same session open and keep using that session, instead closing it out at the end.
    3) The VISA aliases and what they correspond to are stored in a visaconf.ini file. There is more information about this file and where it is located on your hard disk in this KnowledgeBase article here. This visaconf.ini file is checked to see what the actual resources being looked up are.
Let me know if I answered your questions, I will write back with more information on question 1.

  • Memory leak with Visa Close in loop

I read the other posts about the memory leak problems with Visa Close, but eliminating the Visa Close from VI causes problems with read & write (it seems to go out of sync). Any suggestions? Example attached.

Solved the problem. I had to change the bit count and adjust sort. Removing the Visa Close did eliminate the memory leak.

  • VISA Close sending 0x0 character

    Hi,
    Labview 8.5.1
I open a serial port with VISA open, send and receive data, and then close things down with a VISA Close.
However, the VISA Close is sending a 0x0 character on the serial line which is confusing the target instrument.   I can replicate this behaviour with MAX and with the serial port examples.
How can I prevent the VISA Close from sending the rogue character?   It's important that I do close the resource without closing the program in this instance.
    TIA,
    Richard.

    Eric,
    Thanks for the reply.
I first noticed the issue communicating with a homebrew embedded processor, but I can demonstrate the effect by running the Basic Serial Write and Read.vi, hooking the outgoing COM port back to a second incoming COM port (crossing the TX and RX lines, of course) and monitoring that with Com Port Toolkit.  I see the outgoing *IDN?<carriagereturn><newline>
Timestamp                                 Hex chars received                                ASCII representation
     08:16:21.124                             2A 49 44 4E 3F 0D 0A                            *IDN?..
and then about half a second later, the 0x00.
    08:16:21.655                               00
Manually inserting a x second wait before the Visa Close delays the 0x00 by a corresponding amount.
If I use the Measurement & Automatum explorer, select the com port,  open the visa test panel, select the viWrite tab, and Execute the test repeatedly, I get repeated *IDN?.. strings and it's only when I close the test panel that the 0x00 comes through.  ( I can also see a 0x00 coming through when I Validate the session - I assume it's opening and closing it?)
    I have attached a Capture.spy session.
    Thanks,
    Richard.

  • Visa close won't return

    Hello NI community,
While developing my LabVIEW application I encounter the following problem:
If I call the VISA Close I occasionally have the problem that the call won't return. Below are screenshots from NI-IO Trace.
As visible on the 2nd screenshot the "output" tab is missing. Also a start time is filled-in but the finish and call duration are missing (as in the 3rd image)
The hardware setup is a FTDI FT232RL connected via USB. From this a board based on a RS485 is connected.
The drivers of the FTDI chip are version 2.8.30.0 (latest VCP drivers on FTDI web-site and Microsoft update)
    Edit:
As long as the VISA close won't return my program hangs so it is not possible to quit in any orderly fashion (except for a reboot)
Do you have any suggestions where I can start debugging this problem?

So here is my write-up of the fix I used (it worked so far).
    Note:
!!!These actions might damage your system, may break your computer or do other unwanted stuff. You are responsible for the result (nor me nor NI)!!!
    Note 2:
This will remove the drivers so make sure you have a copy of them before proceeding.
With that out the way here are the instructions for windows 7 (vista and 8 should look the same, XP might be a bit different), the OS language is Dutch but the locations of the buttons is the same:
Part of these of the instructions are from this document
1st add the option to show all disconnected devices by opening the system Environment Variables:
right mouse button on "my computer" and select properties.
In the system property select "Advanced system settings"
If requested accept the UAC prompt.
Select the advanced tab, Select the Environment Variables.
In the Environment Variables window select the lower New button
Add the variable "DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices" (without quotes) and a value of 1.
Ok all dialogs and open the device manager.
In the device manager select view and select "Show Hidden Devices"
The list will now get extra long since all devices that where ever connected to your computer will show up.
For the next step disconnect all (USB) serial ports from your computer.
All serial ports that where connected will now show up under "Ports (COM & LPT)" and under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
For every "USB Serial Port (COMxx)" port and "USB Serial Converter" that is semi-transparent (disconnected) do the following steps:
Right-mouse button on the port or converter and select property's
The general tab should give a code 45 that the device is not connected.
Select the "Driver" tab next and select "Remove"
In the confirmation dialog select the checkbox (if present) and select "OK"
Once this is done for all "USB Serial Port (COMxx)" ports and "USB Serial Converter" devices you should be good.
    Optional part
Download the FTClean tool from here: http://www.ftdichip.com/Resources/Utilities/FTClean.zip
unzip and run the tool (as administrator) more information can be found here.
    http://www.ftdichip.com/Support/Knowledgebase/index.html?ftcleanutility.htm
Download the latest VCP driver from the FTDI web-site and install it. (although windows update should take care of this)
    Optional part end
Plug-in a USB serial converter and if everything went well you should be greeted with a "found new hardware" dialog and drivers should install automatically. (or you can re-install them manually)
This fixed the problem for me anyway.

  • VISA framing error BFFF0068

    Hello,
I am getting a VISA framing error code BFFF0068 with the
serial com demo VI that I found in lab view.  How does a "normal
human being" understand what this error means so that it can be fixed?
The device that I am trying to communicate with has detected a error
condition and it transmitting error messages galore. The device
comminucates via COM12 at a baud rate of 260417.
      Amy ideas what BFFF0068 means?
    Regards,
    Kaspar

A framing error can also be due to a driver configuration error, such as a baud rate mismatch.  Since you are using a non-standard baud rate of 260417, this is probably the cause.  Since you are using COM12 as your resource, I assume you are using an add-in serial board.  Make sure your board supports the baud rate you are trying to use.
Here's a KB that talks more about framing errors:

  • Storage VIs internal error, TDMS file

    I use LabView 8.5.1, DAQmx 9.0.2. and a module NI-USB6216.
I configure on my application a task as follows: 15 channels activated with a sample rate of 1sample/10s (very slow). My acquisition has to run for a few days or more.
Sometimes, I obtain the error  "Storage VIs internal" error (code -2500). then I cannot read my TDMS file (see attached the file) and I cannot treat my data.
Do you know the exact meaning of this error on the case of a TDMS file. Do yo have a solution to treat my data?

I tried with LabVIEW 2010 and didn't see the problem when reading your attached TDMS file.
Please download the latest TDMS installer from here:
    http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/9995
Please backup tdms.dll on your computer like in c:\program files\national instruments\shared\tdms\ and then run the installer.

  • Standard report vis fail (error 1) after report toolkit loaded

Labview 6.1 report vis will not work (when dealing with standard report types) after loading the report generation toolkit 1.0.1. This is depite fixing the known issues found in the knowledge base. ie replace automation open with automation close in font style vi and recompiling the vis.
Running the text report example.vi included demonstrates the problem. Error 1 will be returned.
A sub vi in this called tables.vi appears to have 4 automation close vis two of which are inside for loops. I think these need to be outside of the loops? This then transfers the problem to the set font.vi which then returns error 1.

I have the same problem. I am using LabVIEW 6.1 and Microsoft Office 97. I have installed and reinstalled the Toolkit. Whenever I try to run ANY sample VI's that come with the toolkit (by going to "FIND EXAMPLES"), none of them run. The ERROR LIST says that none of the subVI's are found. Why are these subVI's not being found? I see that they are there. Is there a directory error? Both LabVIEW and the Toolkit were installed in their default directories. The Toolkit is in C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 6.1\vi.lib\addons\_office
Advice Please?! I have a sample screenshot.

  • Old visa open, error code 1073807343, using VISA with a GPIB device, and VISA resource names

    Hi everyone,
I'm trying to get a SRS model SR720 LCR meter (manual on this page) working with LabView, connecting it to my PC with an Agilent 82357A GPIB/USB interface (manual on this page). I'm running MAX version 14.0, and NI-VISA version 14.0. I'm running LabView version 13.0f2, 32 bit.
I followed the directions on this page, and I'm pretty confident I can communicate with my LCR meter, because I can go to NI MAX->GPIB0::17::INSTR under "devices and interfaces", then go to the VISA test panel, go to the I/O tab, and I can enter a few commands from the SR720 manual, like changing the frequency, and I see the light on the LCR meter change to what I just told it to do. Here is a picture, just to illustrate it:
Also, if I do the *IDN? command, it returns "
    9: Write Operation (*IDN?)
    Return Count: 5 bytes
    10: Read Operation
    Return Count: 41 bytes
    StanfordResearchSystems,SR720,08087,1.03\n
So, that's good too. I also made the alias of this device "MyLCRmeter", but that shouldn't matter for now.
Now I'm trying to get it to work in a more usable way. The SR7xx drivers that LabView found for me came with a couple sample programs, one called "Getting Started.vi". I tried to just simply see if it worked, changing the "instrument descriptor" field to "GPIB0::17::INSTR", since that's the one that seemed to be the right device in MAX. Here is a picture of the front panel of "Getting Started.vi":
Trying to run it like this gave me this error (code -1073807343):
Old VISA Open in SR715/720 Initialize.vi->SR715/720 Getting Started.vi
Doing a bit of searching on these forums, I found these few threads (1 2 3), which seem to tell me that, since this program was written, the way you open VISA has changed. In the 2nd of those links, one guy said:
You just have to replace the Old VISA Open function with the VISA Open that is on the Instrument I/O>VISA>VISA Advanced palette. When you do that, the wire to the string that was used for the resource name will be broken. Delete the string and make the actual VISA Resource Name visible on the front panel. Wire the VISA Resource Name control to the connector pane where the string control was (upper left connection).
So, I went into the sub-VI Initialize.vi, and did that. Here is a picture of what the front panel and block diagram of the sub-VI Initialize2.vi (I changed the name in case I screwed things up, but I'm pretty sure the new one is the one being called by Getting Started.vi) looked like before I changed anything (you can see the Old VISA Open):
and here it is after replacing that with the regular VISA Open, deleting the instrument descriptor string and replacing it with a VISA resource, and connecting that to the VISA Open:
However, as you can see in the image above, and it seems like someone else had this problem in the 2nd thread linked above, I don't see my device listed in the drop-down menu (even if I refresh), only "LPT1" (I don't even know what that is):
No, I wasnt able to select the visa resource from the pull down menu. somehow it seems disabled or something.
If I just enter the VISA resource name from MAX manually, GPIB0::17::INSTR, and save and try running that, I get the error(code -1073807346):
    VISA Open in SR715/720 Initialize2.vi->SR715/720 Getting Started.vi
So I'm not sure where to go from there, or why it's not in the drop down menu to begin with. I'm sorry if I've missed something but I've searched about as far as I can go. If I had to guess, maybe one thing could be that in MAX, under Tools->NI-VISA->VISA Options->My System->Conflict manager, I have both Agilent VISA and NI VISA enabled; I know sometimes problems arise from conflicts between different software fighting over the same hardware. Is this okay, or do I need to change it?
Thank you and please let me know if there is any other code/screenshots I could provide that could help!

Hi, I did indeed enable NiVisaTulip.dll under MAX->Tools->NI-VISA->VISA Options->My system->Passports->List of passports. Sorry, I should have mentioned that explicitly.
By install as primary, do you just mean as it is here, where it is selected as the "Preferred VISA"?
Or somewhere else? I installed NI-VISA first I believe, and then the Agilent one, and during the installation of the Agilent one, I'm pretty sure I made it not the primary. Here's what I have in the Agilent (it's called Keysight now) Connection Expert software:
I also have this under the "Keysight 488 options" tab:
Should that be checked? I don't actually know the role of VISA vs 488 here...
    What could I try?
    Thank you!

hey guys and gals, i really need help. i've been trying to fix my iTunes software for months now. Without further ado, here's what happened:
    installed itunes

    installed quicktime
    installed itunes
    itunes still doesn't work
installed and reinstalled multiple times from both the c.d. and itunes.com
Therefore, when i attempt to open my itunes program, the dialoge box stating, "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Send error report, dont send."
the details of the error report are:
"information regarding the condition of iTunes when the problem occured; the operating system version and computer hardware in use; your digital product id, which could be used to identify your license; and internet protocol(ip) address of your computer.
we do not intentionally collect your files, name, address, email address or any other form of personally identifiable information. however, the error report could contain coustomer- specific information such as data from open files. while this information could potentially be used to determine your idenity, if present, it will not be used. the data that we collected will only be used to fix the problem. if more information is available, we will tell you when you report the problem. this error report will be sent using a secure connection to a database with limited access and will not be used for marketing purposes."
for the love of god, help me. i really wanna get my itunes working.(i have no antivirus software, such as mcaffee or norton, etc)
    i really appreciate it
    -kevin spanky

great, but when i did this, the agreement popped up and disappeared as soon as it came up, before i could press anything.
yuck. that's consistent with a malware infestation problem that has been causing error-less itunes launch failures since late October. but there's another couple of main possibilities that we have to check on for these "error-less" launch failures. let's try to firm up the diagnosis a bit.
    first let's make an observation.
reboot your PC. open Task Manager to the Processes Tab. now try to launch itunes again.
does an itunes.exe process appear in Task Manager? if so, does it persist in there, or disappear after a few seconds?
if itunes.exe persists in Task Manager
do you have Norton Internet Security 2005? if so, first see:
iTunes 6 won't open on a Windows computer if firewall software is not up-to-date
... but if no joy with that, try the trusty Lorraine M technique:
    Lorraine M: NIS/itunes problem rectified
... but if you don't have NIS 2005 (or symptoms persist), check up on this possibility:
iTunes for Windows doesn't open after upgrading
if itunes.exe doesn't appear in Task Manager (or disappears after a few seconds)
then we have to check up on the malware possibilities.
(this is not a cure, it's a final diagnostic.) use MSCONFIG to get iTunes launching again:
Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows
after the selective startups, don't launchother applications prior to opening itunes. (this has been known to re-trigger the launch suppression.)
post back with a list of the Startup items that you needed to disable in order for itunes to launch again. exact spelling and capitalisation please.
    love, b

You are calling commit on every row inside your for loop. I would avoid this because it's time consuming.
Next thing I noticed is that you call the commit directly on the application module bypassing all binding layer stuff.
Try putting the commit operation into the bindings and call it there. This will give the framework the chance to do its stuff.
If this does not help you can re execute the query of the VO in question after updating the selected rows.

  • CS5 on XP Pro produces "needs to close" error

Windows XP Pro, with all service packs and updates installed:
Since upgrading Photoshop CS4 to CS5, frequently, when I close PS, it produces the error dialog "Adobe Photoshop CS5 has encountered a problem and needs to close."  The "Error signature" contains the following:
    AppName: photoshop.exe          AppVer: 12.0.0.0    ModName: adobeswfl.dll
    ModVer: 2.0.00.7489  Offset: 00013db9
The problem is not easily reproduced, but as I said it is happening frequently.

Do you so Save for Web as part of your workflow?
I'm trying to isolate a reproducible sequence, but I've seen Photoshop crash on exit after doing nothing more than start Photoshop, open a document, Save for Web, then close Photoshop.

  • TNSLSNR encountered a problem and needs to close error

I  have taken Reliance Netconnect Datacard connection 4 days back. Since 4 days i have been trying to install Oracle 9.2 on windows, I keep on getting the error "TNSLSNR has encountered error and needs to close " during database creation from Database configuration Assistant . This is disturbing my SAP installation on Windows XP.
The installation goes fine if i don't install the Netconnect software and use the internet.
The thing is that Reliance Netconnect provides Dynamic Ipaddress.
Has any got any idea why listener is getting stopped automatically when i install Netconnect software and use the internet?
Do i need to change anything in listener.ora or anyway i can register this ipaddress using Net configuration Assistant so that the error gets stopped?
    Thanks in Advance

not ssure but do one thing go to start run cmd and give the commnad ipconfig then u will know the ip add of ur machine then apply that ip in host file, hopefully ur problem will be solve
