VISA Communication with Slot 0 Computer

Hello,
I am trying to see if a VXI Computer is up and running and maybe do a few simple commands like DIR and a memory check to perform a self-test on the VXI Computer. This is the hardware I am running with:
(2) VXI Chassis each with an XP OS
(1) Sun Solaris computer using VISA Server commands to interact with instruments in the VXI chassis
So, my main commands are coming from Sun. I can open a VISA session to the PC using something like this as the address:
visa://ip address/VXI0::0::INSTR
But from there, I do not know if commands can be accepted. Any help would be appreciated or if someone has a better way to get info from a remote PC.
THanks,
Michael Froehlich

Michael,
I think I need to try and clarify the question a bit. You have two VXI chassis with two VXI controllers. You have a Sun Solaris computer and are using VISA on that machine to send commands to one or both of your VXI controllers.
Now you can't send VISA commands telling the controllers to do anything. Controllers don't act like instruments in the sense that you open a VISA resource and communicate, so looking at the directory structure of the OS on your controller can't be done using VISA. Are these NI controllers by the way?
Craig H.
ps. you will probably have more visibility posting this to the VXI/VME discussion forum, not LabVIEW.
Your assumptions are correct. I have 2 VXI chassis with NI VXI PCs in them. I am trying to talk to these controllers/computers without having to use a looping function on the NI VXI PCs. I would like to use the NI VISA server but the only thing I can use that for is finding out all of the devices available on that VXI chassis. I did find a way around this using a TCP listening on the VXI PC and sending a system exec command SYSYTEMINFO and sneding back the information to the SUN but I thought there mught be a cleaner way to do it with NI VISA.

  • My  MacBook is not communicating with my desk top to enable printing from my MacBook. I need to find out how to make that happen. I have a static IP address on my desktop but don't know what to do on the Mac Book.

My MacBook is not connecting to the host computer for the printer. The host computer has a static IP address which is different from the IP address that the laptop is looking for. How do I change the laptop so that it looks for the host computer's correct IP? The laptop is connected to the router. I know this because I can get on the internet with the laptop.

The host computer is Dell and the operating system is Windows 7.  The printer is an Epson, and it is wired to the host computer with a USB cable. It does have host printing turned on.
The three have been working harmoniously for a long time.  The router had to be reset; and after that, the MacBook documents would no longer print.
We created a new static IP address on the Dell but the MacBook is not recognizing it.  We have researched the internet trying to figure out how to make the MacBook locate and recognize the correct IP address from the Dell so they can communicate with each other.  The laptop is not communicating with the host computer because is is looking for the wrong IP.  The host IP is 192.168.1.245 and the laptop is looking for 192.168.15.237.
I hope everything is clear.  The person who originally set it up is no longer available to help me.  Thank you for any help you may give me.

  • I get an error message when trying to install windows 7 on my macbook pro. The message says "windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. I don't have anything connected to my computer. How do I fix this?

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my macbook pro. I went through the process of bootcamp telling it to install windows 7. Once the windows boot manager started an error message came up. The error message says " windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. I don't have a usb connected to my computer. I  am using windows 7 professional install disc. I  can't figure out what i am doing wrong. The same message keeps coming up over and over. Am I doing something wrong or is it something else?

Well, shucks, i just spent almost 30 minutes trying to find your model user guide to explain it better, I guess they never got around to making it.....
I would just borrow another Windows disk and try installing it again and if it does it again then you might take it to an Apple Store and see if one of the "Genius' " can figure it out.
Make sure your internet is enabled and click on your blank desktop and at the top of your screen is a Help menu option, enter PRAM and it should give you a list of things relating to Pram. It may take a few seconds to list anything as it has to connect to Apples severs first. It should list the things you may have to fill back in when your done.
"P-ram" stores some common information that is used in the background, your date, time, startup disk, etc, that you don't have to re-fill when you restart, it's a little different for each computer.

  • Scanning Device not Communicating with the Computer

Can anyone help? I go to launch my Hp Director software to scan a document and an error message appears that says "An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again." This has happened before but I can't remember the steps performed on the Menu of the scanner. Does anyone know how to get the computer and Laserjet 2840 to communicate?

  • Printer not communicating with computer

    I have a mac x 10.5.8 - I have an HP F4280
My printer is no longer connecting with my computer. I have tried different USB cords and its still not working.
It will photocopy and all the lights are on.
I followed the troubleshooting guide and deleted the printer. it will not communicate at all.
I followed all troubleshooting guides and still nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi AshleyAnne1234,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see by your post that the Mac isn't communicating with the printer.
I will be happy to help you.
Restart the Mac and the printer.
Check the system profile to see if the printer is being recognized at all on the Mac.
Go to the Apple, select about this Mac, click more info, select hardware on the left side of the window, then select USB under hardware, on the right hand side of the window it will list all the USB devices connected.
Check to see if the printer is listed.
If the printer isn't listed then try another USB port on the Mac.
I would try the printer another computer to rule out the USB port on the printer is damaged if you have one available if you are still having issues.
Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

  • Computer not communicating with printer

This morning my HP Pavallion downloaded some new updates and installed.  After that I consistently get messages of "No communications with printer".  It will not communicate with either my printer or pdf writer printer.
I have rebooted computer 2-3 times, restarted printer 2-3 times and still have the issue.
In an earlier note I noticed a recommendation of going back to the original computer program before the updates.  I would I do that?
    Any recommendations for a fix?
    Glen

    Hey @papamkoch  and @glendodom ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
If you're looking to do a system restore to before the issue started (which I agree is a great idea) you will want to check out this document:
    System Restore - Windows 7
How to refresh, reset, or restore your PC - Windows 8
These documents cover the steps to access the restore. If a restore doesn't work you can also try a recovery which will put the unit back to it's original factory condition.
Let me know if the restore works!

  • Computer not communicating with printer(s) scanner

I recently hooked up an Officejet  J6480 wireless printer. I also have a J5780 hooked up via USB. After hours, and I mean hours,  of being on-line with Tech Support through Chat and uninstalling and reinstalling, several times, and trying numerous things, neither printer has communication with the computer for scanning. The J6480 will scan if you go through Paint so it is functioning. The J5780 I haven't tested. I have downloaded drivers and every other thing that was suggested and the computer is not communicating with the printer for scanning. I have a Dell computer Inspiron 530S and am running Windows Vista (32)  May I also say, that I disable the Firewall & Virus programs when downloading, etc. so it doesn't interfer. I have tried everything but dynamite to get the scanner to respond. I've downloaded the Patch suggested in the drivers listings and everything. Im beside myself because the J5780 scanned fine until I installed the J6480. Now the window on the printer says there are no scan settings available in the window on the printer. Chat Techs, I think, are beside themselves too. I uninstalled the J5780, installed the J6480 and then went into 'Add a Printer'. Everything went fine except the scanner. I get a message from Solution Center saying there is no communication between the computer and the scanner. I think something is missing here. If anyone knows a solution I would be more than grateful. HELP!!!!

Did you do an L3 uninstall of all HP software and start from scratch?  The L3 uninstaller should be on the install CD's for each printer.  You may have to do a search of the CD to find it.
Tell me what router, ISP and encryption type you are using?  Also, what kind of security software are you using?
Have you done a WIndows Update and updated your security system?  Do that between the L3 uninstall and the re-install.
There is a lot going on here.  I'll hang in there with you...

  • The computer is unable to establish a two way communication with the device

Hi  I am trying to fix a problem for some one else, and I am struggling where to look next. The issue is that we are unable to check the ink levels of a HP Deskjet 1050 printer.  The error message states that the computer is unable to establish a two way communication with the device. After running through the troubleshooting guide about this issue on the HP site with no joy,  I decided that it may be the printer and suggested a replacememnt.  Unfortunately A new HP Envy 5530 was purchased and connected (wirelessly) but the issue remains. I have uninstalled the drivers multiple times, and also disabled any firewall/anti virus software in case this was interfering. I was hoping that some one could point me in the right direction next? None of the other forum posts here (or any google searches) give a solutuon which has fixed the problem.  Thanks

No I cant. Unable to ping the printer too, not sure if this is possible normally?

  • Imessage on my computer not communicating with my phone.

Imessage on my computer not communicating with my phone. In my computer settings my phone number is no longer an option, just my email. How do I get it back?

    HI,
    I had this.
On checking the iPhone the iPhone Number was not ticked and the whole option to change it was greyed out.
I removed the Apple ID and waited to see if th Number got ticked (Settings > Messages > Send and Receive).
    It did not.
I put the iPhone in Airplane Mode
After a few minutes I "restarted" the iPhone by turning off Airplane Mode
This time the Number was ticked.
I Added the Apple ID and then restarted Messages on the Mac.
I soon got the pop message about the iPhone using it's Number and the Apple ID and Accepted.

  • OBD1 ALDL communication with Labview VISA

    Hello all,
I am new to serial communication with labview.
    Task:
trying to send a command and receive data from a 1987 corvettes ECM using VISA serial block in labview.... and failing hard
    Troubleshooting the problem:
Hardware: works with EFI live V4 (software that communicates with cars), send and receives data all day long, so my hardware is not the problem
software: it is something i am doing wrong in my coding
Example code form EFI live V4:

    37:30.241: Finished reading frame
Example code protocol i tryed into the visa block in labview:
    $80,$57,$01,$00,$28
    $80,$57,$01,$00,$28\n
    $80,$57,$01,$00,$28\r\n

    80 57 01 00 28\n
    80 57 01 00 28\r\n
    8057010028
    8057010028\n
    8057010028\r\n
    VISA read Result:
i just get an eco back of the same command i sent
    Question:
is there something simple i am missing in the command protocol or a possible setting i am overlooking?
also what is the purpose of the “$” in the Hex command?
    background info:
    vehicle : 1987 corvette
    ECM type: 16198259
    com. protocol : ALDL OBD1
    labview v8.5
    baud rate: 8192
    data: 8 bit
    parity: none
    stop: 1
    buffer size: 256

Are you actually supposed to be sending hex? You need details on the actual format of the data. I don't think viewing the output of some other program will tell you what is truly being sent and received unless its a sniffer such as portmon.
You can right click on the string control and select hex display. You also did not include the actual VI so no one knows if you have it set to send \r and \n correctly.

  • Commands to FTDI virtual COM port via NI VISA interfere with communication with FTDI chip using D2XX drivers

    Hello!
I am trying to communicate with a DLP Design module DLP-USB1232H which uses an FTDI chip.  My program uses the D2XX drivers.  It works, but...
In another program that runs at the same time, I'm communicating with another instrument via a virtual COM port (VCP) that uses an FTDI UART.  In this program, I use the VISA Serial Port functions.  It works, too, but...
The first program has the capability of listing all the FTDI devices in the system prior to choosing the right one to communicate with.  When the VCP is plugged in, it lists it (FT232R USB UART) along with the DLP-USB1232H and communication with the latter device works.   But as soon as the second program sends a command through the VCP, the first program no longer "sees" any FTDI device.  It stops working.
I have tried 2 different FTDI VCPs; one a standalone cable and the other built in to the instrument.
I’m using Windows 7 32-bit.  My programs are both LabVIEW 8.5 executables.
Is VISA "taking over" the channel to the DLP-USB1232H?  Does someone who understands NI's implementation of VISA have any ideas on why VISA is doing this?  Or if something else is going on?
I'm also interested in workaround ideas.  I've tried a "Prolific" VCP, but most drivers don't work and the one that doesn't give an error in Device Manager doesn't communicate with the instrument.
    Cheers
    Halden
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Halden,
It really sounds like you have a resource conflict. That occurs when two programs or parts of programs try to use the same device or port at the same time.  Your Get Device Function probably tries to open a session with each port (as you increment the index). When it hits a port which is being used by the other driver, it cannot open the session and stops working? Have you examined the errors returned by each program? The VISA drivers will return an error when the port is in use.  I do not know about your program or drivers, but I would expect some kind of error.  Automatic error handling in LabVIEW will not catch errors from a driver if it does not translate them to LV error clusters. So do not count on automatic error handling, if you use it, to display all possible errors.

my wireless key board doesn't seem to communication with my computer even though bluetooth shows it is connected.  I have changed the batteries on the keyboard and when turn on the key board the green lights comes on shortly and disappears.  Can any one  help?

    Hey Annar99,
I found a few articles that might help with the issue you're encountering. These first two are if the Bluetooth keyboard you're using is the one that came with your iMac. The first is a general "how to" for setting up your Apple Wireless keyboard, while the second one is for troubleshooting if the advice in the first article isn't working:
Bluetooth: How to set up your Apple Wireless Keyboard
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1809
Troubleshooting wireless mouse and keyboard issues

If, on the other hand, you're using a third party keyboard, then I would take a look at the following article's troubleshooting section:

    Hope that helps,
