Vista requires restart WRT54G

Hello,
I am using Vista 32bit plugged into a WRT54G (with updated firmware) and a second PC (XP) wirelessly connecting.
About every two hours I cannot connect to the internet or router using  the wired
Vista machine.
The only way I can reconnect is to restart Vista .
(repairing the connection, reseting the LAN, & power cycling the router don't work)
The 2nd XP PC remains conncted the whole time.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

hi...try disabling firewall and antivirsu software from computer, go to control panel >> network sharing center >> LAN properties and try disabling IPv6... restart the computer and check whether it makes any difference.

  • Iphone mail app regularly requires restart to get mail flowing???

Anyone seeing this issue?  Advice re how to fix?
My iphone mail app regularly requires restart to get mail flowing.  That is it is running (doesn't crash) but will at time just stop getting email updates.  I then have to force close the mail app (i.e. kill it) and then restart it.  After restarting it the mail flows again.
    Notes:
    a) I do connect to Gmail for my mail - I'm using the IMAP facility for gmail currently (i.e. not the "Exchange" method)
    b) I do also have the Google "Gmail" app running on my device too
    c) on iPhone 3GS, latest version of IOS

I have this same problem too.  I have both a hotmail and work Microsoft Exchange account setup on my iPhone and have intermitent issues with both.  Sometimes the hotmail push works, but my work email doesn't push, other times it's backwards, and sometimes neither work.  I can't figure it out.  Usually restarting the app (closing out of the multitasking bar), and/or going into settings and disabling the affected mail account works.  And to top it, I have an iPad, I'll hear the mail chime go off on my iPad, expecting it to go off on my phone....and it never does, not until I manually fetch it.
    Very frustrating.

  • Powerbook Requires Restart Often

My 15" powerbook has been having problems for about a month. When I start it up, the screen freezes and has a message to hold down the power button for several seconds to shut down and restart my computer. Then, if I wake it up from sleeping or start it the first time in the morning, the mouse gets stuck and will hardly move. I have to then shut off my computer and restart it. Then the mouse works fine.
I don't have apple care and the powerbook is about 1 1/2 yrs. old. I don't have a lot saved on it--just photos and music. No big files.
Any suggestions would help. I did try to clear out the PRAM, following instructions from another person having another problem. That slowed down the frequency of required "restarts" but it hasn't solved it.

  • Commit changes at deadline or during a maintenance window (requires restarts)?

What happens in an application deployment if I uncheck "Commit changes at deadline or during a maintenance window (requires restarts)"?  If I have an application deployed to a collection with a maintenance window with a scheduled to be available
now with an installation deadline of one week, what would happed?  What about if the application was deployed to a collection that did not have a maintenance window and there were no maintenance windows defined in any other collection the member clients
    were in?

This is for Embdedded devices, like ThinClients.
That means write filter commits either at deadline or during a maintenance window.
Your application still installs as you schedule it, available now and install week from now. If you have maintenance window and selected to not install or reboot outside of maintenance window, then everything happens within maintenance window. If you don't
check that box for write filter, then your app or setting you have just pushed does not get saved when device is rebooted.
Same scenario with no maintenance windows. If you don't have maintenance window then your app downloads and installs as you schedule the dates. Write filter would not commit these changes and everything would go away after reboot.

  • Live Cam Voice requires restart after system sleep under Vista

I have attached my Live Cam Voice to my brandnew Vaio Notebook which runs Windows Vista Home Premium and installed the latest drivers from the Creative website. • OS X Updates that Require Restarts

One thing I've been noticing is when you have a OS X update that requires a restart, it finishes installing and then prompts you to either shut down or restart.
My question is . . . . why is there not an option to restart later (or restart my computer when I feel like it)?
Microsoft Windows provides this feature . . . . it's very handy as when I need to do updates I'm right in the middle of doing something, and I can either restart it right then and there or leave Software Update running in the background with that prompt waiting for me to decide.
Just seems odd that Apple has not given that option.

    Hi, Matthew.
There are a variety of reasons why an update could require a restart. For example:
    • The update may replace an application, e.g. QuickTime or Safari, as well as underlying frameworks, kernel extensions, and the like. If you were to launch the application, and it depends on these changes, it would not work as the necessary new bits were not loaded. Necessary kernel extensions are loaded at startup.
    • Kernel extension cache files are also regularly rebuilt as part of the restart following an Update that changes kernel extensions.
    • The installer may have set up a temporary Startup Item that is executed after the restart, and then removed, in order to complete certain installation-related tasks after the Mac OS X Installer has loaded the new software.
To avoid some of the common problems people can encounter after installing Updates, consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ.
If you think the Mac vs. Windows approach is an important issue, I suggest you submit a Mac OS X Feedback.
    Good luck!

  • Mac Server VPN Requires Restart When Waking from Sleep

I am running OS 10.9.4 and Server 3.1.2.
I had a L2TP VPN configured and working well.  I suspect the 10.9.4 update caused the following issue.
ISSUE: After waking from sleep, the VPN service requires a restart in order to accept connections.  Clients timeout and receive an error message saying the server is not accepting connections.  A quick OFF/ON toggle in the Server GUI fixes the problem.
Any advice or do I need to wait this one out?

If the server is asleep there is nothing awake to answer the clients VPN connection request. As such there is nothing to fix because you are 'holding it wrong'
The nearest solution is to first issue a 'wake on LAN' packet which wakes a sleeping computer, then once it is awake it should answer the request. Except Wake on LAN is designed to only work locally on the same LAN and is aimed more at waking sleeping client devices not sleeping servers.
As both Strontium90 and myself indicated servers are not designed to sleep. They normally have to be running all the time so they are always ready to answer client requests.
A Mac mini acting as a server especially if you use an SSD drive or perhaps as I suggested limit it to just sleeping the hard drive uses a tiny amount of power. You can turn off the monitor as well.

  • Why is broadband required with WRT54G?

I bought a new WRT54G and a companion wireless pci card for my other PC after specifically asking the tech guy on duty if this would work as a 2 PC network without any internet connection, and he said yes. Only after getting it home and opening the box is there comment about a necessary high speed internet connection (nothing about that on the outside of the box). I was sad to say the least, but decided to try it despite my gut feeling it was to be in vain. It works to a point though - Both computers "see" the router, but cannot "see" each other. I wanted to do 2 things, play multi-player Quake 3 which it miraculously does, and share folders / files, which it does not (yet). Any thoughts on how to get that done? I'm not a network guy obviously, so don't yell at me for being a know-nothing regular guy.
    Setup:
    * Dell Dimension 8300, 3GHz Intel, Windows XP Pro, 1G Ram, Ethernet Port from motherboard, Dial-up only because I rarely do more than check email from family (no need for speed here, and it's super cheap).
    * Regular hard network cable from Dell computer to port #1 on WRT54G.
    * WRT54G Wireless Router. Lights illuminated: Power, WLAN, & Ethernet #1. Appears to be working fine, setup went ok, and network icon @ lower right of my computer monitor shows "Speed 100.0 Mbps, Status Connected".
    * Signal beamed and picked up by a Wireless-G PCI Adapter in my Compaq Presario SR2020NX, Athlon 64 3500+, Windows XP Home, 512Mb Ram. That computer reports (after setup) an "Excellent" connection with the WRT54G, and the "wireless icon" at lower right also shows a perfect connection, but there is no sign of the other computer in Windows Explorer although, as stated, Quake 3 multi-player connects fine.
    * Both PC's have file & printer sharing enabled, and all their drives have the "share hand" under them.
I also actually have a wireless laptop (Dell B130) with a 802.11a/b/g card in it, but it can't "see" anything despite numerous tries, but that isn't the priority, just another note I guess.
Lastly, I have downloaded "ELADownloadInstaller.exe", but have yet to try it. on either PC in fear of wrecking the Quake gaming playability (half of the goal is better than none). I did try it on my laptop because if I screw that up no one here cares. It asked to be conncted physically to the router which I didn't do, again fearing screwing everything else up. No go there...

First, regarding the original question with the internet connection. The WRT54G is built to create a private home network and share a single internet connection for all computers and devices connected to that private home network. That what it is usually for and that's what they intend the router for.
If you don't have an internet connection, you cannot share that in your private network. You don't have internet. If that's O.K. for you, the router is no problem you.
If you want to share an internet connection later you'll need an high-speed internet connection like DSL or cable TV. You cannot share a old telephone dial-up connection on a WRT54G (at least, you cannot connect the WRT54G to a telephone line nor make it dial a phone number). That's the "high-speed" part of the requirement.
Anyway, for home networking the router will still do its job.
Regarding the wireless connection problem: You should check whether the wireless security settings on the router and on the laptop match. There are different ways for encryption etc. and if the settings don't match you cannot connect properly.
For this: go to http://192.168.1.1/ and enter the router password (not the wireless network key) which you have chosen during setup. The default password is "admin". You don't have to enter a username. It brings you to the router configuration pages. Go to the wireless tab. There are subtabs for basic wireless setup and wireless security. Please post current settings.
For the settings on the laptop there are several options how it uses its wireless card: many laptops come with special software for the wireless card which is used to set it up and connect to wireless networks. You have to find out how your software works and where you'll find the settings if this is the case.
Some laptops simply use the windows built-in functions called Windows Zero Configuration. To check that, you right-click onto the wireless network icon in the tray and select Properties (or Status and then press the Properties button in the status window). Change to the wireless networks tab. The top checkbox should be active, i.e. Windows is configuring your wireless connections. In the bottom half you'll see the list of preferred networks. Select the network with your network name (the SSID from the router configuration above) and press Properties. Post which settings you have currently for your network on the tabs in the window showing up.

  • Trivial configuration changes require restart !*#$?

Why do TC's require a complete system restart for trivial configuration changes? Specifically, adding another account to the disk access list seems simple enough that an entire reboot shouldn't be required.
    Chris D.

This has been experience with all wireless routers. Not saying it's normal (I've only owned 4 in the past 6 years) but it's certainly not "Apple only." To be honest, I've found TC reboots to be far quicker than any of my other routers.

  • MacPro requires Restart alot

Ok;   my Mac Pro, INTEL  I bought 4 .5 years ago.  It recently does this-  if I leave the computer for 40 minutes or so...my power button starts blinking..and everything freezes up.  Not even Command/Option/ESCAPE will  'wake up the computer.   I'm required to 'press and hold power button to SHUT down...then, re-start.   Never did this before.   Only the last 6 weeks, and it's annoying. Someone at a Mac store said this could be a 'hardware issue-- is it?      I've done 'disc Utility..and Repair Disc and all that- it's all fine. But WHY the restart constantly?? thanks! L in NYC    oh btw; I'm on Snow Leapord  11. something.

You ran the full AHT test and the probelm didn't appear while running it?  Do I assume then it took less than your 30 minutes to run AHT?  Is that a "reliable" 30 minutes? If so perhaps wait long enough before starting the test (answering its prompts) so that the tests are running across that 30 minute mark.
Maybe something is overheating.  You might want to add one of the temperature monitor utilities.
    Hardware Monitor
    iStat Menus
    Temperature Monitor
    iStat Pro
iStat Menus and Hardware Monitor is particularly useful in that they will also show you power consumption (watts, volts, amps) of various components.  If your power supply is going then perhaps these readings would reflect that.  FWIW, my personal preference is IStat Menus.
