VLAN multicast

Hey Guys,
I am trying to setup multicast on my CISCO 6500 Switch.
Scenario: Server (SCCM/WDS for OS deployment) and clients(PC) are in same vlan121 of Switch 6500.
Objective:  Need to setup multicast so clients's fall in the multicast group receives the stream(OS deployment) from server.
Can anyone assist me whats should be the best configuration for it.

You don't say what IOS/supervisor you are running but if you only need multicast within that vlan ie. no need to route the multicast traffic between vlans then you need -
1) IGMP snooping must be enabled (it should be by default)
and
2) you need something to make the IGMP queries. As you are not routing the traffic then you can use the IGMP snooping querier function. See this link for configuration details -

  • Multicast Mroute behavior for local VLAN multicast (with overlap)

    We have a multicast address that exists at various locations but we want to isolate them at each location to a single VLAN.  We run PIM Sparse with anycast RP throughout our Enterprise.  Our original thought was to just turn off PIM on the SVI/VLAN at a campus and isolate that multicast to the VLAN it is in.
    We are still learning the Multicast address via PIM from the other sites we have not turned PIM off yet (since it is an overlapping address).  The question came up that if you disable PIM for that VLAN/SVI would the multicast stay local if the default gateway for that VLAN still has a multicast route it learned via PIM from another site?  Or would that VLAN without PIM still use the mroute table to connect to the Multicast address?

    Paul
    Sorry, i didn't realise this was addressed to me.
    To be honest i have never used this command but reading up on it it would seem you certainly could block the flow of multicast packets between the interface for the group(s) you wanted to so it would be a way of isolating traffic between vlans.
    In terms of the RP announcement messages there is a keyword you can add to the command "filter-autorp" which filters discovery and announcement messages as well. But i wouldn't like to say for sure exactly how it would or wouldn't work without testing ie. do you need to filter the RP announcements before they reach the SVI or would it work applied to the SVI.
    I could see a use for this if you had a number of SVIs that needed to route the multicast stream between themselves but not to other L3 subnets. But the topology would be a little difficult on a L3 switch ie. if half the SVIs need to route the multicast stream but the other half didn't where do you apply the command. It would have to be on each SVI you didn't want to receive the stream.
    It would work better if, for example, you had a L3 switch connected to a router with L3 routed ports and all the SVIs should route the multicast stream but it should stay local to the L3 switch so it is blocked on the L3 uplink (and other potential streams from the router to the L3 switch blocked as well).
    Hope that made some sense. It's sometimes difficult to explain things without a diagram

  • Imaging Multicast 3com 4924 VLan

    I have a environment vlan in switch 4924 each port is a vlan that conetct
    a other switch that can be a flood.
    Multicast funciotionaly very well f client is in same segment where
    server reside, but if host client to be in other segment vlan, multicast
    traffic cannot walk to other segment.
    I have free port 67, 68 that allows traffic broadcast DHCP.
    Which version of IGMP use Multicast imaging?
    Someone can tell me how resolve this problem?
    Thanks for your time

  • Multicasting Issues - MDT 2013 - Server 2012 R2

    Hello!
    I'm having some issues with multicasting on a large university network. Our setup is like this:
    WDS role setup on VM with Server 2012 R2
    Deployment shares hosted on the same VM - Using MDT 2013 to manage Deployment Shares
    VM is on a different VLAN from client computers. - IP Helpers to connect between the VLANs
    Multicast namespace was created successfully.
    All switches between server and client are managed, IGMPv3 compatible, and have snooping enabled3
    MDT Images are custom WIMs, with no setup files
    When I run a deployment on any number of clients, I get the message saying "Attempting multicast transfer". The clients show up listed in the WDS Multicast Transmission. Then the clients drop off the server, and begin unicasting. Unicast speeds
    are excellent. Our 10GB images copy in about 10 mins. But we plan to do 30-40 systems at a time, and I believe that could cause some issues with so many individual sessions running...
    I've noticed under our network adapter properties that Microsoft Network Adapter Multiplexor Protocol is unchecked. Not sure if that is related?
    I have copied multicast information from the BDD.log file on one of the failed clients. That can be found below.
    Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
    Edit: I likely posted this to the wrong place. I have reposted this to the MDT forum. Thanks!

    Hi Kyle T.Johnson,
    Could you try to put a test client to your WDS server VLAN then monitor this issue again.

  • Multicast error 0x80091007

    When using multicast in same VLAN as ConfigMgr server is it works fine. When I try to use multicast in other vlan, multicast session starts but fails almost immediately with error 0x80091007.
    In problematic VLAN computers might not resolve ConfigMgr server with shortname. Could it cause this problem?

  • Multicasting on Cat4507 - wrong feature set ???

    Hello gurus,
    I've been trying to enable inter-vlan multicast on Cat 4507 switch. Now I've read, that all you need is
    "ip multicast-routing" and "ip pim parse-mode" for interfaces on switch. First command works fine, the second - doesn't : here is a reply from switch
    switch(config)#int Gi1/1
    switch(config-if)#ip pim ?
    % Unrecognized command
    switch(config-if)#ip ?
    Interface IP configuration subcommands:
    access-group Specify access control for packets
    arp Configure ARP features
    dhcp DHCP
    igmp IGMP interface commands
    verify verify
    Is it just a problem with feature set or am I missing something ?
    Thanks,
    Alex

    Hello Alex,
    you need a layer 3 to configure multicast on, e.g. a VLAN interface:
    interface Vlan2
    ip pim sparse-dense-mode

    GP

  • MPLS, VPLS, MAC-in-MAC Ideas for my application

    Hi,
    I have a provider that serves me a 100mb/s Ethernet port, Single VLAN, between two locations. They block important traffic to me like STP BPDU's, VTP etc..
    What technology can I use to take everything, STP, VLANs, Multicast etc.. and encapsulate it and get it all back out on the other side?
    Can I use point to point MPLS with two low cost routers?
    My provider only has Ethernet in the core. They use Ethernet switches as a CPE Demarc on both sides and an Ethernet Switch cloud core.
    Thank you.

    L2TP is not the same as QinQ (also known as vlan stacking, etc).
    First make sure your PVLAN has enough MTU to support the inner instance of 802.1q
    vlan 2
    name Your_PVLAN
    mtu 1504
    interface GigaEthernet1/1
    description Uplink to Your LAN
    switchport
    switchport access vlan 2
    switchport mode dot1q-tunnel <<< This is the magic
    switchport nonegotiate
    mtu 9216
    no ip address
    l2protocol-tunnel cdp << The rest of the magic
    l2protocol-tunnel stp <<
    l2protocol-tunnel vtp <<
    no cdp enable
    spanning-tree bpdufilter enable << Recommended
    On your uplink you only need to be able to transit VLAN2.
    This is one way. There might be others.

  • APPLETV and mDNS - Turn OFF mDNS it works, Turn it on it doesn´t?!?!?!?

    Hi guys!
    I´m having a strange morning. We switched from 7.2.x code to 7.4.121.0 on our 5508 WLC. And Today I get a call that the apple tv´s aren´t visible any more.
    Quick check into the MDNS profiles, I see each and every one. Quick check on my iphone to my test appletv - that works too. But it is the only ATV I can actually see.
    - I can only see the atv when it is connected to the same Accesspoint, if I roam it vanishes.
    - If I turn OFF the MDNS Settings - I see every atv in the building!!!
    I configured everything according to: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/technology/bonjour/Bonjour74.pdf but somehow it is not working.
    Settings:
    (yes the mDNS global is enabled in the tests ;) )
    I can see the ATV´s on the WLC:
    When it is enabled I can only see the Apple tv that is connected wirelessly to the same AP I´m connected to! So none of the wired devices!
    I have enabled the DNS Snooping in the advanced settings for the WLAN. I have also found an extra MDNS Snooping for the Interfaces itself, which wasn´t activated. But activating it, didn´t help a thing. I also tried deactivating the VLAN Multicast feature that was needed in 7.2.x but also to no avail.
    HELP! Any Idea what might be running amok here? Everything was working without a hitch in 7.2.x and I thought the 7.4.121.0 would be a blast, because easier, better and such :D Thanks alot for your help!

    o.k. thats abit stupid. I had a brain freeze. But just to follow up on this:
    If your MDNS Profile that is used for the snooping DOESN´T have the airtunes part included. It won´t work. Just because the general option is choosen, doesn´t do diddly swat for the wlan itself. Guess thats an error I just had to make ;)
    Problem solved!

  • LGS308 problem with vlan and multicast

    Hello,
    I have a LGS308 smart switch and am having problems putting multicast traffic on a specific vlan.
    The switch is connected to a PC for management (vlan 1).
    All ports are in acces mode, vlan 1 untagged.
    I created vlan 2 and put it untagged on port 7 and 8.
    Now, when I connect a multicast device (IPTV) on port 8, the switch becomes unresponsive and nothing works.
    It seems the switch is flooded with multicast traffic.
    Simply turning IGMP snooping on didn't help so I think it needs more configuration.
    Is this a known problem?
    ps: Once I have this simple setup running I'm planning for a more advanced setup with trunking 2 vlans (iptv + internet) to another switch over a single UTP cable. But first things first

    Yes it should!
    I have changed the setup like this:
    Switch 1
    port 1 - access mode - vlan 1U <---> Internet
    port 2 - access mode - vlan 1U <---> PC
    port 7 - access mode - vlan 2U <---> IPTV source (IGMP)
    port 8 - trunk mode - vlan 1T + 2T <---> switch 2 port 8
    Switch 2
    port 7 - access mode - vlan 2U <---> IPTV source (IGMP)
    port 8 - trunk mode - vlan 1T + 2T <---> switch 2 port 8
    With this setup, I can reach both switches from my PC.
    However, multicast doesn't work. I don't get IPTV on switch 2 port 7.

  • Vlan Select & Layer 2 Multicast optimization

    I am going to implement this vlan select feature in my campus network. We are running on 7.3 & planning to move into 7.4 WLC code as well. I use below reference document for this task.
    WLC 7.2 VLAN Select and Multicast Optimization Features Deployment Guide
    I am bit confuse about layer 2 multicast optimization. Document says we can enable/disable by using below CLI commands. "
    config network multicast l2mcast <enable|disable > <interface>"
    I have 4 interfaces called student-wireless-1 to 4 (vlan 1161-1164) map into single interface group. For layer 3 multicast I will make vlan 1161 as the multicast interface with "multicast vlan feature" enabled. For layer 2 what should I do ?  Is layer 2 multicast enable on all these interfaces by default ? If so should I disable l2 multicast on 3 of these interfaces like below ? Would there be any issue of disabling this layer 2 multicast on those interfaces ?
    config network multicast l2mcast disable student-wireless-2
    config network multicast l2mcast disable student-wireless-3
    config network multicast l2mcast disable student-wireless-4
    If it is not enabled by default, shoud I go ahead enable it on one interface like below ?
    config network multicast l2mcast enable student-wireless-1
    If someone can explain this that would be highly appreciated.

    Thanks for the help but I found some further information. Some switches (2955, 2960, 3560 or 3750) can act as a "multicast querier", taking place of a multicast router without actually needing to support multicast routing. This means you dont actually need IP Services IOS or a layer 3 switch.
    Configuation as per below;
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/hw/switches/ps5528/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00803a9a29.html#wp1187873
    Supported platforms below (look for igmp querier);
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/tech/tk828/technologies_tech_note09186a0080122a70.shtml#topic3
    Thanks for putting me on the right track however.

    Port G1/0/21 is where the receiver is conected and the 24port is the trunk.
    Jon, i revert and this is the output. I put the ip pim rp-address the same of the lookpback that i create previously.
    (*, 230.0.0.50), 00:37:46/00:02:19, RP 192.168.230.230, flags: SJC
      Incoming interface: Null, RPF nbr 0.0.0.0
      Outgoing interface list:
        Vlan80, Forward/Dense, 00:09:52/00:00:00
    The strange thing is that I have more than 40 vlans and it only fail in some vlans like 80.

  • Multicast within a VLAN

    I am setting up a multicast application within a particular VLAN. What commands if any are necessary for this to work.
    IGMP snooping is anabled by default...Does IGMP need to be enabled on the VLAN interface for this to work?
    Is there a way to view the IGMP snooping tables?

    If you have a 6513, IGMP snooping is enabled by default. It is still a good idea to enable multicast routing and PIM on the VLAN interface to constrain multicast traffic. Or you can enabled IGMP querier if you are running newer software.

  • Multicast VLAN Registration Cannot Create Interface in MVR Type Receiver

    Hi all:
    I tried to create MVR type receiver in the a port in switch 2960X but it pops out error that the port is in mVLAN and cannot be done.
    The port is in the same VLAN (default VLAN 1) as the ports which I have set to MVR type source. I tried other ports and they are having the same problem. Ports set to MVR type receiver are OK in the same VLAN.
    I tried to disable the VLAN 1 as a Multicast VLAN but the same problem still happens. When I create another VLAN 2 and set the port access to VLAN 2, after that set the port to MVR type receiver, it is OK. The problem is I have to set the port type source and receiver in the same VLAN, may I know how to resolve this problem?
    Many thanks!

    Very helpful document for Upgrading from 4.6C to ECC6:
    [Considerations when upgrading SAP Business Workflow from SAP R/3 4.6C to SAP ERP 6.0|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/103b1a61-294f-2a10-6491-9827479d0bf1]
    I just wish I found this BEFORE the upgrade is almost done... Would have saved me a lot of time.
    Especially check if you have program RSWDVERCNT in your system (if not, see note 1058159).
    This will check for incorrect references to data elements.
    Also check if RSWFEVTXPRA has been executed.

  • Multicast issues through L2 Switched Vlan

    Hi,
    I have attached a high level design diagram which represents the network topology and multicasting is introduced on the network for camera streams. For multicast using “sparse-dense-mode” and OSPF is used as the routing protocol.
    Multicast works good when we had a single receiver “Receiver-1” and this receiver is connected to a access switch which directly connects to the core 6500 switch through a L3 Vlan. Mroutes looks good and works as expected.
    When a second receiver “Receiver-2” was introduced on the network and the configuration is no different to the previous configuration and the receiver is not getting any streams and the multicast doesn’t work as expected. The only difference between is the presence of a L2 switch which acts as a bridge between the Access and the Core 6500 switch.
    I believe, the simplest option is to enable routing and multicast on the switch called “Core-2” instead of using it as a L2 transparent switch. But, I would like to explore the possible options before enabling multicast throughout the network.
    Your thoughts and help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Rajesh

    Hi,
    If Core-2 is pure L2 switch and we are running PIM between C-3750-2 and Core-1, it should not play any role in forwarding multicast traffic. Please share
    from Core-1,C-3750-1 and C-3750-2
    - show ip mroute <group>
    - show ip pim nei
    - show ip pim rp mapping
    From C-3750-1 and C-3750-2
    - show ip igmp group
    Regards,

  • 3750 multicast flood in source vlan

    I have issue with following configuration:
    two ports in same vlan. Multicast traffic received over one of interfaces got flooded to second one.
    Sample config:
    interface GigabitEthernet1/0/20
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 10,15
    switchport mode trunk
    interface GigabitEthernet2/0/20
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchport trunk allowed vlan 10,15
    switchport mode trunk
    interface Vlan10
    ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.252
    ip pim sparse-dense-mode
    no ip mroute-cache
    Here I receive multicast data over g2/0/20 and it gets flooded out of g1/0/20. Though all receivers are in separate vlans, not in vlan10. IGMP snooping is on and sh ip igmp membership doesn't list any of these interfaces.
    Thanks.

    Thanks.... Can you point me to appropriate cisco docs?
    An what you can advise me in doing here? The problem is that I need to receive multicast from both interfaces in vlan 10 but for different groups and I don't want to have all data I receive over one link to get flooded to another one. Also seems I have no way to get rid of trunk here...
