Multicast within a VLAN
I am setting up a multicast application within a particular VLAN. What commands if any are necessary for this to work.
IGMP snooping is anabled by default...Does IGMP need to be enabled on the VLAN interface for this to work?
Is there a way to view the IGMP snooping tables?
If you have a 6513, IGMP snooping is enabled by default. It is still a good idea to enable multicast routing and PIM on the VLAN interface to constrain multicast traffic. Or you can enabled IGMP querier if you are running newer software.

Hi -
We have a need to load-balance requests within the same VLAN, but need to make sure it only happens then. We have multiple web servers all members of the same subnet, these servers are grouped differently in 5 different VIPS whose IPs are also part of the same subnet.
Example: We need server A, who is a member of VIP Z, to talk to VIP Y and be load-balanced. These servers and VIPs are all part of the same subnet. however, when that same server A talks to host C somewhere else we don't want it to be translated.
We'll obviously need to use groups and ACLs, but would we be using 'add service XX' in the group command or the 'add destination service XX' command? Should we NAT these connections as a new IP address, or just fake out the dest VIP so that it thinks the sender's MAC is the CSS?
Anyone have a sample config from doing this before?
Thanks!
chadThanks for the info, Steve. I have looked at a couple of online references including that one, but they all seem to be just a percentage of what I'm looking to do. It's probably a combination of them all put together, but because these VIPs are production websites I want to make sure I don't have to try this a second time. To make it make more sense I'll paste in what I'm trying to do below.
First, I have these 2 content VIPs:
content www-LT-80
vip address 10.28.128.30
protocol tcp
port 80
url "/*"
advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
arrowpoint-cookie browser-expire
add service lt-bw02-80
add service lt-bw04-80
add service lt-bw06-80
add service lt-bw08-80
add service lt-bw10-80
add service lt-bw12-80
add service lt-bw14-80
add service lt-bw16-80
add service lt-bw18-80
add service lt-bw20-80
add service lt-bw22-80
add service lt-bw24-80
add service lt-bw26-80
add service lt-bw28-80
add service lt-bw30-80
add service lt-bw32-80
balance leastconn
active
content rc-LT-80
vip address 10.28.128.38
protocol tcp
port 80
url "/*"
advanced-balance arrowpoint-cookie
arrowpoint-cookie browser-expire
balance leastconn
add service rc-pub08-80
add service rc-pub06-80
add service rc-pub04-80
add service rc-pub02-80
active
Second, these are the services in each VIP respectively. I'll only paste 1 service from each VIP, all the others are the same just with incrementing IPs:
service lt-bw02-80
ip address 10.28.128.51
protocol tcp
port 80
string wwwltbw2
keepalive type script ap-kal-httptag "10.28.128.51 /keepalive.asp www.lendingtree.com"
keepalive frequency 15
active
service rc-pub02-80
ip address 10.28.128.171
protocol tcp
port 80
string rcpub02
keepalive type script ap-kal-httptag "10.28.128.171 /keepalive.asp rc.lendingtree.com"
keepalive frequency 15
active
Goal to achieve:
I need the lt-bwXX-80 services that are members of the first VIP to be able to talk to the second (RC) VIP and be load-balanced. The caveat is that when these lt-bwXX-80 services talk to other hosts through the CSS I do not want them being NATted at all, for reporting reasons their IPs need to stay the same. To touch on your earlier comment, all of these VIPs are also load-balanced to the Internet for web browsing. Basically, I need some form of address translation, whether it be IP or MAC, but only on specific to/from relationships.
Does that help make it more clear? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Imaging Multicast 3com 4924 VLan
I have a environment vlan in switch 4924 each port is a vlan that conetct
a other switch that can be a flood.
Multicast funciotionaly very well f client is in same segment where
server reside, but if host client to be in other segment vlan, multicast
traffic cannot walk to other segment.
I have free port 67, 68 that allows traffic broadcast DHCP.
Which version of IGMP use Multicast imaging?
Someone can tell me how resolve this problem?
Thanks for your time

Hey Guys,
I am trying to setup multicast on my CISCO 6500 Switch.
Scenario: Server (SCCM/WDS for OS deployment) and clients(PC) are in same vlan121 of Switch 6500.
Objective: Need to setup multicast so clients's fall in the multicast group receives the stream(OS deployment) from server.
Can anyone assist me whats should be the best configuration for it.

endYou don't say what IOS/supervisor you are running but if you only need multicast within that vlan ie. no need to route the multicast traffic between vlans then you need -
1) IGMP snooping must be enabled (it should be by default)
and
2) you need something to make the IGMP queries. As you are not routing the traffic then you can use the IGMP snooping querier function. See this link for configuration details -

Multicast Mroute behavior for local VLAN multicast (with overlap)
We have a multicast address that exists at various locations but we want to isolate them at each location to a single VLAN. We run PIM Sparse with anycast RP throughout our Enterprise. Our original thought was to just turn off PIM on the SVI/VLAN at a campus and isolate that multicast to the VLAN it is in.
We are still learning the Multicast address via PIM from the other sites we have not turned PIM off yet (since it is an overlapping address). The question came up that if you disable PIM for that VLAN/SVI would the multicast stay local if the default gateway for that VLAN still has a multicast route it learned via PIM from another site? Or would that VLAN without PIM still use the mroute table to connect to the Multicast address?Paul
Sorry, i didn't realise this was addressed to me.
To be honest i have never used this command but reading up on it it would seem you certainly could block the flow of multicast packets between the interface for the group(s) you wanted to so it would be a way of isolating traffic between vlans.
In terms of the RP announcement messages there is a keyword you can add to the command "filter-autorp" which filters discovery and announcement messages as well. But i wouldn't like to say for sure exactly how it would or wouldn't work without testing ie. do you need to filter the RP announcements before they reach the SVI or would it work applied to the SVI.
I could see a use for this if you had a number of SVIs that needed to route the multicast stream between themselves but not to other L3 subnets. But the topology would be a little difficult on a L3 switch ie. if half the SVIs need to route the multicast stream but the other half didn't where do you apply the command. It would have to be on each SVI you didn't want to receive the stream.
It would work better if, for example, you had a L3 switch connected to a router with L3 routed ports and all the SVIs should route the multicast stream but it should stay local to the L3 switch so it is blocked on the L3 uplink (and other potential streams from the router to the L3 switch blocked as well).
Hope that made some sense. It's sometimes difficult to explain things without a diagram

I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN .
HI All,
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN . the WLC are providing the HQ and one of the Branches the Wireless services .
Am using all the available 9 SSIDs at the HQ , and am using only 4 of it at the Brnche.
The problem that i have are happening only at the Branch office as i cant room between the SSIDs within Diferent VLANs but i can do it with the one that pointing to the same VLAN. Once the client ( Laptop/Phone ) connected to one of the SSIDs. it imposiible to have him connected to the other ones with Different VLAN. meanwhile, It says its connected to the other SSID but its not getting IP from that pool.
here is the Show Run-Config from my WLC .. and the Problem happening between the SSID AMOBILE and ASTAFF. i have the Debug while am switching between the SSIDs if needed .

In this mode, the clients are still remembers on the WLC until the session timer/idle timer expires. So switching between SSID's in h-reap will not be the same when switching when the AP's are in local mode.
Take a look at the client when connected in FlexConnect in the WLC GUI monitor tab. Thus will show you what ssid and vlan the client is on. Now switch to a different ssid and compare this. It's probably the same because the client has not timed out. Now go back to the other ssid and look again. Now on the WLC, remove or delete the client and then switch to the other ssid at the same time. Or switch SSID's and then remove the client. The client will join the new ssid and in the monitor tab, you should see the info.
There is no need to have clients have multiple SSID's unless your testing. Devices should only have one ssid profile configured to eliminate any connectivity issues from the device wanting to switch SSID's.

Optimized Multicast Forwarding (OMF)
On the Nexus 7000 you need to disable OMF for each VLAN with IPv6 traffic. Otherwise IPv6 Neighbor Solicitations and all other IPv4/IPv6 source-only groups are not flooded within the VLAN.
Q1: In my eyes the better workaround is to enable MLD snooping for IPv6 traffic and leave OMF enabled. Is this correct? I didn't have the equipment yet to test.
Q2: On the Nexus 5000 OMF is also enabled by default but IPv6 traffic works (including Neighbor Discovery) even when OMF is still enabled and MLD Snooping is turned off. Do you know why?
Tested with 5548UP/5.2(1) and 5596UP/6.0(2) code.
Q3: It seems that the Sup2T on the catalyst 6500/6800 also implements OMF by default. Does anyone know if IPv6 traffic is forwarded by Sup2T without turning off OMF and without turning on MLD snooping?
RobertI believe the problem has less to do with the PIM mode specified and more to do with the address chosen. I quote this from the IANA documentation on assignment of multicast addresses:
The range of addresses between 224.0.0.0 and 224.0.0.255, inclusive,
is reserved for the use of routing protocols and other low-level
topology discovery or maintenance protocols, such as gateway discovery
and group membership reporting. Multicast routers should not forward
any multicast datagram with destination addresses in this range,
regardless of its TTL.
What is generating this multicast traffic and how did it choose this particular multicast address?
I believe that if you change the address to something outside of the reserved range that it will work much better.

Server to Server Multicast Query
Dear All,
I have a below query related to Basic (Server to Server) multicast within the same subnet and vlan but connected to two different switches.
Below is the scenario:
In N5K = Acting as a layer 2 and "ip igmp snooping" is enabled
In Dist_CAT65K= Acting as a layer 2 for Vlan1 and "no ip igmp snooping" configured globally (disabled)
In Core_CAT65K= Acting as a layer 3 for Vlan1 (SVI) and "no ip igmp snooping" configured globally (disabled)
Server-1 ---> N5K-1 ---> Dist_CAT65K-1 ---> "Core_CAT65K-1 <<====>> Core_CAT65K-2" <--- Dist_CAT65K-2 <---- N5K-2 <----- Server-2
Kindly suggest what is the best way to enable multicast end to end.
I have one solution to enable 'pim' under SVI in the core switch:
Core_CAT65K:
interface Vlan1
ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
ip pim sparse-dense-mode
end
To enable 'pim,' Do we need to enable "ip multicast-rouing" in Core_CAT65K?
Do we need to enable "ip igmp snooping" in Core_CAT65K?
Is it better to enable "ip igmp snooping" in Dist_CAT65K? What If we not enable IGMP Snooping on Dist_CAT65K?
Or Multicast will still work without doing anything because IGMP is disabled on Core_CAT65K & Dist_CAT65K and Multicast packets will be treated as Broadcast in Core_CAT65K?
What is the best way?
Regards,
AnserHi Jon,
Thanks again. Just to clarify, What is the impact If I disable IGMP Snooping globally and enable on the specific SVI & vlan? e.g
Core_C65K:
Config# no ip igmp snooping
Config# no ip igmp snooping querier
Config# inter vlan 1
Config-if)#ip igmp snooping
Config-if)#ip igmp snooping querier
Dist_C65K:
Config# no ip igmp snooping
Config# vlan configuration 1
Config-vlan# ip igmp snooping
N5K:
Enable (ip igmp snooping) globally & Vlan as well.
Can I get the optimal multicast traffic between the same VLAN with the above configuration?
Regards,
Anser -
DLNA Media Server is not showing on diffrent Vlans
Hi all,
i have a media Server in one Vlan now i want to access it from other Vlans as well. for DLNA i configure Multicast and PIM Spare mode with rp address on Cisco 4500x L3 switch and enable IGMP snooping on all my Layer 2 switches but still not able to show my DLNA in other Vlans
DLNA in Vlan2
want to show in it in Vlan3 and Vlan4
here is my L3 Switch configuration foe PIM

Setting up Multicast Routing for Imaging on HP Switches
I've just spent a bit of time getting multicast imaging to work on our
HP ProCurve switched network so I thought I'd post what was necessary
so if anyone else had to look for it then they'd have some help.
You'll need a switch capable of routing such as a 5300 series that is
already routing regualr IP traffic. By default IGMP routing is disabled
so that multicast traffic will not cross VLANs. Here's how to change
that:
Log into the 5300 in Manager mode (aka Admin)
type "config" /goes into config mode
type "ip multicast routing" /sets up IGMP routing
type "router pim" /sets up Protocol Independant Multicast routing
type "vlan *" /where * is a VLAN numeric ID
type "ip igmp" /sets up IGMP routing on that VLAN
type "ip pim" /sets up PIM routing on that VLAN
Repeat those last three steps for all necessary VLANs
type "exit" /to get back out of config mode - you may have to do
that more than once
type "wri mem" to save the config changes
Then go out to any other switches in the network path for multicasts
and login in Manager mode
type "config"
type "vlan *" /where * is VLAN numeric ID
type "ip igmp" /turns on IGMP routing
Repeat those last two steps for all VLANs that need it
type "exit" /to get back out of config mode - you may have to do
that more than once
type "wri mem" to save the config changes
That's it and it meant I went from "Session Master not found" to "New
Image successful". I hope it helps somebody.

ACE design with inter-Vlan routing
Hello all.
I'm working on a design for a customer where the ACE will perform inter vlan routing.
A few questions about that :
- is routed traffic enforced in hardware with some kind of CEF-like mechanism ? (I suppose yes because there is a FIB ? per
https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-19253 ) we expect a certain load and routing is software will not be acceptable
- if I put my VIPs within the VLANs hosting the application, is there any restriction on accesses made to this VIP (if the VIP is reached after the routing process is performed) ?
example :
VLAN2 (client) ----- ACE ----- VLAN3 (servers)192.168.2.0/24 192.168.3.0/24
If I try to access the VIP (192.168.3.20) from a PC in the VLAN2 (192.168.2.15) does it work ?
I assume yes because the VIP appears as a connected /32 in the routing table, I just want to be sure to not fall into some tricky part of code because the access to the VIP is done after the routing process. I just want to be sure there is no drawback / restriction about that.
Thanks in advance.Hello Surya!
Yes this is possible. You can reach the VIP from one VLAN to another (The VIP is not really inside of the VLAN). Important is to check your ACLs and you need to have the service-policy either globally or local on both VLAN-interfaces.
And I guess there is nothing like CEF implemented in the ACE, because it is not needed there.

Hey guys,
I'm configuring my access points with two SSID's through the GUI. The first is a corporate SSID and the second a guest SSID. The corporate SSID needs to be attached to native VLAN 1000. The guest SSID needs to be attached to VLAN 1234. Both SSID's / VLAN's are to use WPAv2 AES CCMP with a PSK. Although I'm getting an error message indicating that my VLAN's don't exist on ‘Radio1-802.11N 5GHZ’ . Here are steps I take from start to error...
Create SSID’s with no security. CORP not to broadcast. Set CORP to use native VLAN 1000. Set guest to use VLAN1234.
Within security encryption manager > Set encryption mode cipher to AES CCMP on both VLAN 1000 and VLAN1234.
Within services > VLAN check that both VLAN’s have Radio0-802.11N 2.4GHZ and Radio1-802.11N 5GHZ selected. They do.
Within Security > SSID Manager – set client authenticated key management to mandatory, enable WPA – WPAv2. Set pre-shared key. Hit apply > “ERROR: VLAN 1000 doesn’t exist on ‘Radio1-802.11N 5GHZ’ (see Services > VLAN).
I get the same error for both SSID’s. Radio1-802.11N 5GHZ is "checked" against both VLAN's. Am I missing something? Both Radio0-802.11N 2.4GHZ and Radio1-802.11N 5GHZ are enable interfaces and are "up".
I'm pretty customed to switch and router IOS although have absolutely no exposure to WAP CLI.
Any assistance appreciated.I've resolved this myself. The GUI is basically terrible and very buggy. I used the CLI and was able to add WPA through the CLI.

When using multicast in same VLAN as ConfigMgr server is it works fine. When I try to use multicast in other vlan, multicast session starts but fails almost immediately with error 0x80091007.
In problematic VLAN computers might not resolve ConfigMgr server with shortname. Could it cause this problem?Hi,
Any updates?

Some basic problems with multicast, IGMP & NLB
Hi out there
We have two DC's with 10G interconnection in between - these connections are run as L2 links - put into a set of nexus 5000 (the old nx5020) - acting access-switches - and uplinked to a set of nexus 7009 which act as L3 switch for us.
We have a cluster of vmware boxes in each site and are running MS windows 2008 machines with MS NLB for TerminalServices - in IGMP multicast mode - in VLAN 21.
Now I looked in the log of the nexus 7000 and found that the PIM DR is "flapping" between the two sites from time to time:
2013 Nov 25 22:50:58 ve-coresw-01 %PIM-5-DR_CHANGE: pim [26128] DR change from 172.21.159.253 to 172.21.144.3 on interface Vlan21

2013 Nov 25 23:26:07 ve-coresw-01 %PIM-5-DR_CHANGE: pim [26128] DR change from 172.21.159.253 to 172.21.144.3 on interface Vlan21
2013 Nov 25 23:26:10 ve-coresw-01 %PIM-5-DR_CHANGE: pim [26128] DR change from 172.21.144.3 to 172.21.159.253 on interface Vlan21
I am not that familiar with multicast but the basic concepts are there - in the vrf I have defined
ip pim ssm range 232.0.0.0/8
the vlan is defined as:
vlan configuration 21
layer-2 multicast lookup mac
vlan 2001
under the SVI interface vlan 21 I have also defined - and there is a sample showning the nlb
interface Vlan21
vrf member DMZ_21
no ip redirects
ip address 172.21.144.3/20
ip pim sparse-mode
ip arp 172.21.149.19 0100.5E7F.9513
these flapping should only occur if the keep-alives between the two sites are missed 3 times
The uplinks to the nexus 5000 are defined as mrouters
vlan 21
ip igmp snooping mrouter interface port-channel5
ip igmp snooping mrouter interface port-channel16
SW5020-01# sh ip igmp snooping vl 21
IGMP Snooping information for vlan 21

IGMPv2 Fast leave disabled
IGMPv1/v2 Report suppression enabled

Eth1/20 Eth1/25 Eth1/26 Eth1/27
Eth1/28 Eth1/29 Eth1/30 Eth1/31
Eth1/32 Po16 Po5
The link between the two sites - and boxes - is running error-free. As far as I can see there hasn't been any problems in that vlan since ??
If I look at f.ex spanning-tree the topology hast changed for long time in that vlan (2 weeks).
Could I harden the igmp multicast setup?
What is happening when a DR is changing? Will the multicast stop work or what happens?
As far as I understood the DR is the service which forwards the multicast traffic to the groups so if suddenly some re-negotiation occurs I would expect that the active traffic will be interrupted.
here the actual MS NLB clusters adresses:

No Inter-VLAN, Just the Internet, Still Layer3 needed?
Hi Guys,
If inter-VLAN communications is not required on a LAN, and clients at each VLAN just need outside (Internet) access, then do I still need to have a layer 3 device in my network?
To be more specific, wireless VLANs are going to be created on a WLC for a Hotel. There is no layer 3 device involved in the network. There is a gateway made by a company called SolutionIP which is used for Internet billing and management. The only reason that I'm creating wireless VLANs and AP groups is to break up broadcast domains because of the size of the network (122 APs and up to 2000 users). So actually there is no need for users on a building to communicate with users on another building. All they need is to connect to that gateway, pick up a connection in their browser, pay with the credit card and surf the Internet.
If the answer of the above question is "no", then what IP address should I use for the default gateway when I'm creating dynamic interfaces on the controller?
Regards,
Saman
Internet Billing and ManagementYou don't need routing on this deployment, APs can be contained within a VLAN and configure the WLC with an interface defined as AP management with a IP address. You will need DHCP for this VLAN to serve the APs.
Configure multiple interfaces on the controller for clients, these can be configured to be a member of an interface-group, this interface-group is then mapped to the WLAN profile you create. Users will then be dropped onto the interfaces in a round robin fashion, this way you can serve 1000 users with 4 subnets each of 250 addresses (Class C). No requirement for routing or large CIDR (supernetted) addresses. Each interface would need its own DHCP scope which can be done on the internal DHCP server on the WLC.
As long as your default gateway device, in your case the SolutionIP can be configured with multiple VLANs and IP addresses so it can handle the different subnets then no problem.
