VM live migration during OVM server upgrade

Hi Guys,
I'm planning to upgrade OVM 3.1.1 to 3.2.7.
There are 4 OVM Servers in server pool and all is using the same CPU family which means the live migration is possible.
I just wondering if I upgrade one OVM server to 3.2.7 first and then is it still available to live migrate VMs from 3.1.1. servers to new 3.2.7 server?
Thanks in advance.
Jay

Hi Jay,
I'd do the following:
- free up one OVS by migrating all guests to the remaining OVS
- upgrade OVM Manager straigh to 3.2.8
- upgrade the idle OVS to 3.2.8
- live migrate your guests from one 3.1.1 OVS to the new, idle 3.2.8 OVS - if not using OVMM, then using xm
- round robin upgrade your remaining OVS
I've done that a couple of times…
Cheers,
budy

Live Migration in OVM 3.0.2 should have an interruption or not?
    I mean: I have 2 OVM Servers 3.0.2 & FibreChannel Storage
I installed a Oracle Linux 5.6 x64 in paravirtualized Mode
When I do a Live Migration the Virtual Machine changes in seconds to the other server with the lock image. Meanwhile I ping to the machine & Im inside the command line.
Communication interrupt like 10 seconds or sometimes more & command line does not work for the same time
    Is that correct?

I don't know why yesterday delay secondsYou might want to talk to your networking guys to make sure that PORTFAST is enabled (if you have Cisco switches) or that you have rapid STP configured. Keep in mind that we switch the MAC address of the guest from one physical server to another. The delay you saw was your network noticing and re-routing packets to the new location.

I've seen the log throw out compatibility errors when the 2801-HF network wasn't present on each server; however, I've fixed that issue. Since I can live migrate without a VNIC present, I thought it might be another network issue, yet I'm not even seeing "com.oracle.ovm.mgr.business.CompatibilityChecker" being ran when a guest has a VNIC.

Both servers have the same bridge device configured (checked by running ifconfig -a on each server), if that's what you mean being defining a VNIC. While the guest vm is configured with a VNIC, I am able to offline the guest vm, migrate it, and then online it again on the second server without any issues. I was assuming any type of network difference (like a lack of a VNIC being defined on both servers) would have shown up in the AdminServer.log file under the execution of "com.oracle.ovm.mgr.business.CompatibilityChecker".
    Thanks for the quick response.

  • Failed OVM Server Upgrade from 3.0.2 to 3.1.1

I was trying to upgrade my OVM Server environment from *3.0.2* to *3.1.1* using the CD. I got the following error message after choosing the Upgrade option: Oracle VM server 3.0.2 (cciss/c0d0p2). The other option was to Reinstall System.
    +"Error mounting device sda2 as /:+

Any advice that can help me find the way to upgrade my servers?
    Thanks in advance,
    Andrés L.

    Hi,
I tried "yum update -y" and after reboot I encountered a kernel panic after the following message: switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory.
So I got to reinstall ovm 3.0.3 from scratch.
Maybe the hard disk drivers in 3.1.1 kernel version (uek2) are not compatible with my server disks.
If someone has an accurate explanation to this issue, could be helpfull.

  • 10.6.8 to Mavericks Server Upgrade loses Open Directory Users

    Hi,
I have an OpenDirectory Master running OSX Server 10.6.8. An upgrade to Mavericks 10.9 has just failed.
The server has about 50 OD users and passwords need to be retained across the upgrade. Apart from OD, the only other active service is AFP file sharing.
DNS is good forward and back as per this article: OS X Server: Steps to take before upgrading or migrating the Open Directory database
I followed these Apple guidelines for server migration: OS X Server: Upgrade and migration from Lion Server or Snow Leopard Server.
I cloned the boot drive, booted from the clone, upgraded to Mavericks, then installed the Mavericks Server app.
On opening the Mavericks Server app "Configuring services' showed for 5 minutes, but then an error message appeared. I did not record it exactly, but it was something like, "There was an error configuring the server. Certificate not valid!".
I was able to continue through the error but on opening Server app there were no OD (local/network) users showing. Authentication was not happening.
I had underestimated the time to get the installation done and I had used up the window of downtime I had booked - I did not have much time to troubleshoot. So, I cut back to the original hard drive and the server is back to 10.6.8 again.
Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out what may have gone wrong? How can I get my users into 10.9 Server?
    Many thanks,
    b.

Linc Davis advice is spot-on, as usual.
There seem to be dozens of sub-databases in the LDAP database. A problem in any of them seems to derail the entire conversion process. I tried a straight conversion and was also disappointed that there were unresolved issues, and it meant that the conversion failed.
So I did the export route using WorkGroup Manager, and exported four sets:
    Users
    Groups
    Computers
    Computer groups
go to the appropriate pane (e.g., Users) and Select All, then choose Export, and give it a name (probably with an embedded date in case you need to do it again later)
Then use 10.9 WorkGroup Manager (available as a separate download) to Import.
When re-imported, everything worked just fine (except the passwords, which cannot be carried forward using this method). I did have to manually enable at least one service, such as File Sharing service in Server [admin], or users showed up as "not allowed" [to log in].
This entire process of getting Server 3 to work is fraught with peril, and everything converges on ONE diagnostic, "Network users can't log in". Which means you blew it, but provides no additional information about WHERE you blew it.
There do not appear to be any magic bullets. It is just a tough slog. Users who reported success after failing the first time reported they returned to fundamental principles and did all the steps over, in order, to attain success.

  • Server 2012 r2 live migration fails with hardware error

Hello all, we just upgraded one of our hyper v hosts from server 2012 to server 2012 r2; previously we had live replication setup between it and another box on the network which was also running server 2012. After installing server 2012 r2 when a live migration
is attempted we get the message:
"The virtual machine cannot be moved to the destination computer. The hardware on the destination computer is not compatible with the hardware requirements of this virtual machine. Virtual machine migration failed at migration source."
The servers in question are both dell, currently we have a poweredge r910 running server 2012 and a poweredge r900 running server 2012 r2. The section under processor for "migrate to a physical computer using a different processor" is already checked
and this same vm was successfully being live replicated before the upgrade to server 2012 r2. What would have changed around hardware requirements?
We are migrating from server 2012 on the poweredge r910 to server 2012 r2 on the poweredge r900. Also When I say this was an upgrade, we did a full re install and wiped out the installation of server 2012 and installed server 2012 r2, this was not an upgrade
    installation.

The only cause I’ve seen so far is virtual switches being named differently. I do remember that one of our VMs didn’t move, but we simply bypassed this problem, using one-time backup (VeeamZIP, more specifically).
If it’s one-time operation you can use the same procedure for the VMs in question -> backup and restore them at new server.
    Kind regards, Leonardo.

  • OVM 3.1.1 - Live migration not completed

    Hi,
I'm facing an interesting case with the VM live migration.
If I issue a migration from the manager, the VM is effectively moved to the new server but the job still in a "in progress" mode (0% completed) and the OVM servers still locked until I abort the job.
Once the job is aborted, everything is back to normal and the VM is running on the targeted server.

  • Data source migration in parallel to CRM server upgradation

    Hi Experts,
We are working on BI 7.0 system which pulls data from CRM 2004. Recently we upgraded BI environment from BW3.5 (to BI.70 SP -16).
Now we are re-modeling the existing BI design due to performance issues & to use BI functionalities. We would like to migrate the data sources in BI also to BI version so that we can get advantage of using DTP & transformations.
But the issue here is now we started to up grade our source system also from CRM 2004 --> CRM 2007. I beleive that the data source version will be maintained in source system (CRM) tables also.
So if we migrate the data source now (before CRM upgrade), will it cause any issues in BI once CRM server upgrade done?
Note: We can implement all of our new designs with out data source migration.
Please advice us to proceed. Let me know if you need more details.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Arun Thangaraj.

    Hi reddy,
    1). Why Migration Process?
Migration process is to convert BW 3.x objects ( such as Data source, Trasfer rules and update rules etc) into BI 7.0 objests.
2). Why we are Migrating BW 3.X objects into 7.0 objects?
We are Migrating 3.x data source into 7.0 inorder to avail three functions, Those are
    a). Direct data acquisition
    b). Realtime Data Acquisition (RDA)
    c). BI Accelarator.
    3) .Regarding With export and Withour export options ?
These two options come in the process of Migration step. Regarding these options clearly described in the fourth point as bellow.
4). What will happen in this Migration process?
( Remember at the time Migration Transfer structure and Transfer rlues deleted, keep in mind go throgh bellow steps).
What ever may be the option selected (i.e, With Export or Without export ) data source will migrate to 7.0.
But if you choose With export option deleted Transfer Structure and Trasfer Rules will store in the table " RSDSEXPORT". If you select other option (i.e, Without export ) the deleted Trasfer structure and trasfer rules perminently not avaliable.
Thats why always go with With Export option only. This will help to revert back 7.0 data source into 3.5 data source when ever is there any requirement in future.
Please go look into bellow link.
Re: Migration of datasource from 3.5 to 7.0

  • Server 2012 cluster - virtual machine live migration does not work

    Hi,
We have a hyper-v cluster with two nodes running Windows Server 2012. All the configurations are identical.
When I try to make a Live migration from one node to the other I get an error message saying:
Live migration of 'Virtual Machine XXXXXX' failed.
I get no other error messages, not even in event viewer. This same happens with all of our virtual machines.
A normal Quick migration works just fine for all of the virtual machines, so network configuration should not be an issue.
The above error message does not provide much information.

    Hi,
Please check whether your configuration meet live migration requirement:
Two (or more) servers running Hyper-V that:
    Support hardware virtualization.
    Yes they support virtualization.
Are using processors from the same manufacturer (for example, all AMD or all Intel).
Both Servers are identical and brand new Fujitsu-Siemens RX300S7 with the same kind of processor (Xeon E5-2620).
Belong to either the same Active Directory domain, or to domains that trust each other.
Both nodes are in the same domain.
Virtual machines must be configured to use virtual hard disks or virtual Fibre Channel disks (no physical disks).
All of the vitual machines have virtual hard disks.
Use of a private network is recommended for live migration network traffic.
Have tried this, but does not help.
Requirements for live migration in a cluster:
Windows Failover Clustering is enabled and configured.
    Yes
Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) storage in the cluster is enabled.
    Yes
Requirements for live migration using shared storage:
All files that comprise a virtual machine (for example, virtual hard disks, snapshots, and configuration) are stored on an SMB share. They are all on the same CSV
Permissions on the SMB share have been configured to grant access to the computer accounts of all servers running Hyper-V.
Requirements for live migration with no shared infrastructure:
    No extra requirements exist.
Also please refer to this article to check whether you have finished all preparation works for live migration:

  • Host server live migration causing Guest Cluster node goes down

    Hi
I have two node Hyper host cluster , Im using converged network for Host management,Live migartion and cluster network. And Separate NICs for ISCSI multi-pathing. When I live migrate the Guest node from one host to another , within guest cluster the node
is going down.  I have increased clusterthroshold and clusterdelay values.  Guest nodes are connecting to ISCSI network directly from ISCSI initiator on Server 2012.
The converged networks for management ,cluster and live migration networks are built on top of a NIC Team with switch Independent mode and load balancing as Hyper V port.
I have VMQ enabled on Converged fabric  and jumbo frames enabled on ISCSI.
Can Anyone guess why would live migration cause failure on the guest node.
    thanks

After migration complete positively, at the moment the MPIO of the migrated VM goes crazy with a lot of errors (source: mpio eventID 16 ) and warnings (source: mpio EventID: 17) in the system event log. After that the disks becomes unavailable.
Consequently everything hangs until power off the migrated vm, so the services on the cluster switchs on the second node.

    Hello,
I've just been through the IBM interoperability matrix and came across this statement:
    Hyper-V on x64 based systems is supported with the following guest OS: Windows 2003 32bit, Windows 2003 64bit, Windows 2008 32bit, Windows 2008 64bit.
Clustering of guest OS is not supported at this time. When using Emulex HBAs with Hyper-V please select the settings mentioned in the Host Attachment section of SVC Info Center

Hi, I'm currently experiencing a problem with some VMs in a Hyper-V 2012 R2 failover cluster using Fiber Channel adapters with Virtual SAN configured on the hyper-v hosts.
I have read several articles about this issues like this ones:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/baca348d-fb57-4d8f-978b-f1e7282f89a1/synthetic-fibrechannel-port-failed-to-start-reserving-resources-with-error-insufficient-system?forum=winserverhyperv
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/18698.hyper-v-virtual-fibre-channel-troubleshooting-guide.aspx
But haven't been able to fix my issue.
The Virtual SAN is configured on every hyper-v host node in the cluster. And every VM has 2 fiber channel adapters configured.
All the World Wide Names are configured both on the FC Switch as well as the FC SAN.
All the drivers for the FC Adapter in the Hyper-V Hosts have been updated to their latest versions.
The strange thing is that the issue is not affecting all of the VMs, some of the VMs with FC adapters configured are live migrating just fine, others are getting this error.
    Quick migration works without problems.
We even tried removing and creating new FC Adapters on a VM with problems, we had to configure the switch and SAN with the new WWN names and all, but ended up having the same problem.
At first we thought is was related to the hosts, but since some VMs do work live migrating with FC adapters we tried migrating them on every host, everything worked well.
My guess is that it has to be something related to the VMs itself but I haven't been able to figure out what is it.
Any ideas on how to solve this is deeply appreciated.
    Thank you!

  • Live Migration and private network

Is it a best practice to put up a Private Network beetween the nodes in a pool (reserving a few network cards and switch ports for it), to have a dedicated network for the traffic generated e.g. by live migration and/or ocfs2 heartbeat? I was wondering why such setup is generally recommended in other virtualization solutions, but apparently it's not considered strictly necessary in OVM... Why? Are there any docs regarding this? I couldn't find any.
    Thanks!

    Hi Roynor,
regarding the physical separation beetween management+hypervisor and the guest VMs, it's now implemented and working...
My next doubt on the list of doubts :-) at this point is:
I could easily set up ONE MORE dedicated bond, create a Bridge with a private IP on it on each server (e.g. 10.xxx.xxx.xxx), and then create a Private VLAN completely insulated from the rest of the world.
I'd be putting the physical switch ports where the Private Bonds/Bridges belong to on the same VLAN ID.
    But:
    - How can I be sure that this network WILL be actually used by the relevant traffic? If I'm not wrong, when you set up e.g. a physical RAC cluster, at a certain point you are prompted to choose what network to use for the Heartbeat (and it will be marked as PRIVATE), and what network will be used by clients traffic (PUBLIC).
In Oracle VM such setting does not exist... Neither during installation, nor in VM Manager, nowhere.
    - Apart from Security, I'm doubting that during heavy VMs migration problems could arise, because if the network gets saturated, there are chances that the OCFS2 heartbeat would be somehow "lost", therefore messing up HA etc. This is at least the reason why in a RAC setup a private network is highly recommended.
    - I finally found that doc you mention from IBM (thanks for pointing it out!) but my opinion is that THEIR INTENTION was to separate the traffic at the same way I'd like to, but there is simply NO PROOF that such setup would work... They do not mention where you can specify what traffic you want to be on what network...
This is a very important point... I'm wondering why this lack of information.
    Thanks for your feedback, btw

  • OVM server Reboot

    Dear Gurus,
I would like to get clear some of my doubts regarding Oracle VM server.
Actually i am very new to OVM and we are having a OVM setup and the ovm version is 3.2. We are having a server pool having two servers.
    Doubts :
    1. During the creation of server pool it was asking us to point to a repository, however after shown of Repository i unable to seem them for further use and i had to create another Repository in order to host the iso, templates and VM disks ets. Where does it gone or does it used for pool hearbeat ?
    2. Can't we use the the ISO's already exported from other NFS servers so that we can simply mount the iso for installation of VMs like in VMWARE.
    3. after creation of server pool we had created couple of Test VM and were trying to reboot the OVM server so that the VM can move across the physical boxes for fail over. However during the OVM server reboot my VM actually reboots instead of Live migration. According to Oracle documentation they say either i have to put the OVM server in Maintenance Mode or i need to move the VMs manually. also it says the vms either will reboot or migrate online. in my case VMs are getting reboot and moves to other available server.
Please clear my doubts so that i can learn further about OVM and able to explain it to customer.
    Thanks.

Yes .... from the documentation you will get...min 12GB only for headbeat
