Vmware beta for OSX
Purchased and installed parallels for the old lady so she can watch her DRM windows media player live tv streams / downloads on her Mac mini intel from Europe and Africa.
www.kuduclub.com needs a few tweaks but it is working. ActviceX ???
Had issues with video playback being blocky / lagging even with the files downloaded and played from virtual HD.
Presumable 8mb video bios used by Parallels.
Warra warra what has this to do with VMware Beta for Mac = never knew or could find vmware for mac / info about it even though it was released in August 2006 for testing.
The briliant people at the reg relisted it.
Hopefully Vmware beta will work with the video playback and I can get a refund on my parallels copy for Mac.

Please do not report this stuff here. This is a user forum not the beta test site. You need to read the release notes that came with this software. See the following:

Messages Beta for OSX keeps crashing
Hi folks,
Downloaded the new Beta yesterday, and had a blast using it to get iMessages as well as bundle together my iChat into it. But it caused some problems.
I was iMessaging my wife with it yesterday, and having no issue. But when I got onto my iPhone and tried responding to a few iMessages, it told me they could not be sent. I resent them by tapping on the red "!" and it successfully resent them to her and I thought it was just a transtional glitch from platform to platform.
But upon trying to open Messages on OSX today, all I get are crashes. What's even more crazy is that it still wants to get IM messages and sits there bouncing with a badge that counts up, but every time I click on it I get the following:
Then the chat window...
Then the crash...
Here's the crash log in case anyone can parse out why this is ocurring:

Vmware Fusion Beta for Mac OSX Released Today
I don't know if this is the correct forum; if it's not, please pardon me.
VMware Fusion Beta for Mac OSX has been released today. This product, while the developers admit has some bugs in it, promises to make virtual computing a whole lot easier and would eliminate for many (not all) the need to use Boot Camp. The link for this new program is http://www.vmware.com/products/beta/fusion/
On that page you can find links for support and forums as well.
If you need a free virtual appliance to use with Fusion, then use this link http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/
Currently, there is no charge for using the BETA program. The VMWare folks are asking people to give feedback on their use of the product.
This is what we've been waiting for to purchase our new MAC. I can say without a doubt that from my own experience with Linux boxes, VMWare is the best virtual solution on the market. It's easy to configure and supports a wide variety of hardware and OSs. I can even move the virtual machines I created under Linux to my new MAC when I receive it.
The time has finally dawned for me to retire the last remaining pc towerbox in my home. My wife and I recently expunged one of those machines earlier this week and are eagerly looking forward to getting rid of the other one.
We am really looking forward to purchasing the new Mac Pro. What makes it especially appealing for us is it's scalability and the fact that we can use our current hardware, including our Kensington Track Ball mouse and current monitor with it, although we are taking a serious look at a new Apple Display as well.
Many thanks to everyone for taking the time to read this post. I am looking forward to joining and my wife is looking forward to rejoining the MAC community. You might try the VMWare beta forum:

What OSX does suit better for PowerBook G4 17"?
I have 2 partitions, both as StartUp Disks with Leopard 10.5.8 OSX.
Can you please tell me what OSX is better for my Mac? Leopard or Tiger?
I never tried the last, 'cos I bought this laptop a second-hand with Leopard on it already.
So, I'd like to know more what of the OS is better for Powerbook G4 (concerning productivity, speed, usability etc.)?
Here's my Hard Ware Overview:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: PowerBook G4 17"
Model Identifier: PowerBook5,9
Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
Processor Speed: 1.67 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 167 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 4.9.5f3
Serial Number (system): W8******SX0
Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-00145122650A
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
I'm asking, 'cos sometimes (especially now) the System really slow! Even writing this text is no really easy task to do!
Productivity of the laptop harshly decreases! Launching applications, opening windows, writing text, opening tabs in a browser etc.
<Edited by Host>Make sure you use a 10.5.6 retail or older 10.5.4, 10.5.1, or 10.5.0 retail if installing 10.5.
Note that Mac will not boot into 9, and will lose access to Classic under the Mac OS X 10.5 boot. For more on updating to 10.5 including the retail disc description, see this tip:

Hello! The company I work for uses powertones for a large line of print products. (A "powertone" produces a duotone image that is very similar to a 4C image.) We are replacing all computers and upgrading the Operating Systems, so we will not have a computer that can run OS 9, nor Powertone software.
I have the lucky task of finding an up-to-date alternative to Powertone! After an exhaustive search I've come up with nothing substantial.
#1) Does anyone know of software that can produce the same results as powertone?
#2) If there isn't software out there to do this, does anyone have a method for creating duotones that produce colors similar to 4C? We're pretty p'shop savvy over here, so complicated instructions should be fine.
#3) (opt.) Why does Adobe offer the plug-in with no warning about it's incompatibility with OSX? Just curious.
http://www.adobe.com/products/plugins/photoshop/powertone.html
You are awesome if you can answer me those questions 3. Or possibly just give me some insight or help if you have it. Thanks!!
PS -- I did read the thread "what ever happened to..." already.Hi Molly,
I have no idea about the use of or replacement for Powertone. However there is a solution. It is tangentially related to question #3. The plugin SDK for Windows hasn't changed so Powertone and lots of Windows plugins are still viable options even though they would have had to be rewritten for Macs. It is the price we pay for OS X complicated by the switch to Intel hardware.
My suggestion is this. Consider having one workstation set up with VMWare's Fusion, Windows XP Pro and a single license of Windows Photoshop. Use that workstation for the Powertone conversions. I'm suggesting VMWare rather than Parallels because it is the better for serious power use as it allows you to assign multiple cores to the Guest OS as well as RAM allotment so you could load up a Mac Pro with 12GB RAM and assign 4 GB to your Windows partition and have plenty left to run everything else.
I have a Windows license of Photoshop running this way to use plugins which have not been rewritten for Mac as well as a number of other graphics and 3D programs which don't exist on the Mac side. I'll boot up Windows in the morning and just let it run all day on it's own 'Space' (virtual Desktop) and with the flick of a wrist am in Windows. It is very stable and the new release, now in beta, provides complete multi monitor support as well as a number of other real advances. It is a free upgrade for purchasers of the current shipping verson. -
Which one external hard drive is better for my G5's FW800 port?
Hi,
I use a late G5 under 10.4.11. Last two weeks I used two different Western Digital disks, My Book Studio & My Book Studio Edition II but both of them don't operate well with the FW 800. They conflict with my audio interfaces (FW 400 devices). Only at FW 800. At FW 400 and Usb 2.0 they operate fine.
Because of this I have to replace the WD disk and unfortunatelly I have two options from the store I bought it. And here is that I want your help please.
Which one external hard drive from these two is better for my G5's FW800 port?
Lacie Quadra 1TB External HDD by Neil Poulton or Verbatim Quad Interface External Hard Drive 1TB. Formatted HFS+ for Mac OS?
I'll very appreciate any answer. SpyrosHi-
I think that looking at your other devices is needed.
Check out the Mackie troubleshooting guide for one:
http://www.mackie.com/support/documents/TechFAQno.1.pdf
Page 8 has specific suggestions regarding firewire and chipsets.
The same for the Presonus:
The firewire ports on a Mac (FW400 and FW800) run off the main logic board and share system resources. PreSonus interfaces are designed to be run in series with other firewire peripherals. If you are experiencing erratic performance or pops, clicks, and dropouts, daisy-chain your FW400 peripheral from the secondary firewire port on your PreSonus interface. If you must use a FW800 device, it is recommended to purchase a firewire expansion card for your Mac.
http://support.presonus.com/entries/119100-optimizing-your-computer-for-audio-ma c-osx
It appears to me that both devices require enough resources that the firewire controller of the G5 may be unable to properly support both FW400 and FW800 transfer rates.
It appears that the bandwidth requirements of the devices are forcing the machine to drop FW800 in lieu of supporting FW400.
Both makers suggest use of third party PCI cards for Firewire 800, and it may be that you need additional power to the firewire card to keep up with the I/O and bandwidth demands being placed on the machines by you audio devices.
You mention that someone told you to not use the Oxford chipset, but the best external drives are all those that have the Oxford chipset.
It is important to note that not all WD MyBook drives have the same chipset, and few of the WD drives have the Oxford chipset.
Asrock and VIA are other chipsets for the WD drives.
VIA is notoriously poor as far as Mac compatibility goes. -
WHAT IS THE BEST ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE FOR OSX YOSEMITE?
WHAT IS THE BEST ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE FOR OSX YOSEMITE?
Here are some more thoughts to consider.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iCloud, iTunes, or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Java can be disabled in System Preferences.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Beware spontaneous popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > check "Block popup windows".
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but unsolicited popups are commonly used to deceive people into installing unwanted software they would never intentionally install.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind. -
VMware Tools for Windows 3.x
Hello,
I created a fork of VMware Tools for Windows 3.x 16-bit operating systems. Currently these tools include:
time synchronization between ESXi host and VM
CPU idle support
FAT12 and FAT16 shrink support
experimental 100 mbit/s network card support
famous Intel 8086 turbo button emulation
emulation of 5.25“ floppy drives and their sound for a better user-experience
For the future 10 Gbit/s and InfiniBand support is planned.
Check-out the source code on GitHub: stdevel/vmtools-w16 · GitHub
Best regards!I know you must use 16-bit DLLs if LabVIEW is installed on Win 3.x. The LabVIEW CD for versions 4 and 5 contains NT/95/3.1 versions. Can't you just install the Win 95 version? If you're using an older version, maybe its time to upgrade.

Hello MacBook Community,
I recently bought a MacBook Pro (the one for $1199 with I think the 250G harddrive) after being a PC all of my life. I just finished my senior year of high school, so I will be going to college and find more uses for the MacBook once I get there, but in the meantime I want to play games. Yes, I know that is a problem and that is why I asked around and found out that I could use windows on the boot camp. I partitioned my MacBook for 36G of windows XP and took all of the necessary steps. When I tried installing the first game, everything went well, but when I tried actually playing it, it said that my 3d hardware was insufficient and that my directX wasn't good enough. I gave up with that game and installed another and got it installed and loaded it up and when it got to the load screen it force closed with no explanation.
Someone suggested that I try the VMware Fusion for WIndows XP, so I installed it and got better general XP results, but got the exact same results for the games. I downloaded the latest Direct3d and installed it and still nothing.
What do you think is the problem?
What do you suggest that I do?
How can I fix this?
Much thanks.Taking Applications that are inherently single-threaded and running them on multiple processors is a Classic unsolved problem in Computer Science. This means that Applications will only speed up when they are Hand-coded to run speedily on multiple processors. Although the latest version of Photoshop is Finally seeing this treatment, many more mundane Applications will never be done this way.
As long as it remains so (which is likely to be permanently) MegaHertz (processor speed) matters, and once you have a handful of processors MegaHertz matters a lot more than number of processors.
Your list of prospective Mac Pros does not include the Mac you should be considering first, the 6-core 3.33 GHz Westmere, available as a build-to-order option of the four-core mac Pros. It gives you the fastest clock speed of any, and its Hyper-Threading give you 12 effective processing units.
The premium price of an eight-core or 12-core is so large that you could buy another complete Mac Pro for the same price, and use them separately or as a compute-farm.
If you are handy, larger DIMMs (8GB each) are available from reputable third party memory suppliers, and they stand by their correct operation in your Mac with one caveat: They do not play nice with other sizes mixed in. So if you are contemplating large memory size, choose 8GB DIMMs from the start.
Three DIMMs is optimum, but studies are showing that the penalty for running with two DIMMs or four DIMMs is under 5 percent in real-world Applications. So starting with two 8GB DIMMS seems like a good way to go.
With this kind of large compute power, the remaining bottleneck quickly becomes Disk I/O. You should set aside a Boot Drive: a small, very fast Drive that holds only System. Library. Applications, and hidden Unix files including Paging. Users files should be moved to another drive to reduce competition for the Boot Drive. A small VelociRaptor works well for this. A small SSD is even faster. -
Latest Java for OSX -- Up-To-Date? Where's new?
I sure could use answers from you Gurus out there, or pointers to where I can get the straight poop. TIA.
I use a non-Apple produced Chat application (gabbly) that I believe is written in Java. One day last month, this app suddenly lost its graphics. Some buttons became invisible, though their mouseovers were still visible, and if I wait till the mouseover shows up to show me I'm still on the invisible button, "it" will work. Other graphics work wrong, also.
I use adblock in FF, but no joy if I turn it off.
I cleared all FF cookies with "gabbly" in their names; no joy.
In Safari, the app kinda works better -- graphics are there, but some buttons work wrong.
Curiously, another Mac on the same LAN shows the app working fine under FireFox 1. (that rev UTD, OSX UTD) So it's probably some machine-dependent thingie...
I'm not a developer, just a random end-user...
MacOS 10.4.9 (Up-To-Date)
FireFox 2.0.0.4 (UTD)
Safari 2.0.4 (419.3) I believe this is UTD, I install all Apple updates to OSX...
QuickTime Version 7.1.6
Repair Disk Permissions on my startup disk (where all these apps live -- not done yet, necessitates starting from another disk, which I could do...
The Java test at http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml says that I'm "using an older version of Java technology" and that a new one, 1.5.0_07 from Apple, is available.
HOWEVER! Under the Apple Operating System of that same display, is gives my current JRE version is 1.3.1 for OSX 10.2.7.
So, how can it be possible that my 1.5.0_07 is an "older version" of Java, when the lower segment of the same URL's display offers me 1.3.1 ?
And should I downgrade from 1.5.0_07 to 1.3.1 ? To me, it looks like Apple's version of Java is more advanced than the version now on offer from java.com...
Or should I re-install the latest Java from Apple, which another string has pointed at, at http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/java2se50release1.html ? This is all so confusing...I agree, the Java version numbering could have been better implemented. Supposedly there is something called Java 2, which has been out for awhile that's included in it. Some people here might have a better answer for that:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=727
I don't understand why the numbering system isn't clearer.
Apple does have this page on Java which may be of some help:
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/java/
And Wikipedia has this page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java%28programminglanguage%29
As you can see J2SE is actually numbered 1.1.4 through 1.6.

Disable middle button for osx while in Parallels
I've been trying to accomplish this for hours, maybe someone can help:
I need to use AutoCad for PC, so I run a Windows XP VM in Parallels 7. In OSX (Mountain Lion) I have assigned Mission Control for the middle button of my mouse (Logitech V470).
When I try to pan in Parallels's AutoCad, as obvious, it activates Mission Control. How can I disable the middle button for OSX only if I'm working in Parallels, so when I go back to OSX it will continue to launch Mission Control. Am I explaning my self good enough?
Thanks for your help!!Actually the middle button on a mouse has a specific function in OS X and you have overwritten that. If you hadn't it would work as it should in Win XP for ACad. You need to remove that change of assignments and go back to Default.
There also may be an isolation feature in Parallels where once you are in Parallels the mouse and keyboard commands are only relayed to the OS in parallels. Not sure as I use VMware Fusion. -
New external harddrive already formatted as FAT32 for OSX
I have decided to purchase a new external harddrive already formatted as FAT32 for OSX for me to move files between my pc amd macbook. what would you recommend that is functional and not expensive-less than 150 bucks? 50 gigs would be sufficient for me. please advise.
thanks guys!
which of these 3 would you recommend for my
purpose?as a photographer my purpose is moving back
and forth high rez photos (none in the 4g range
though) between my pc at work(dell XP intel 4 ) and
my new macbook at home. i have to pay for the EHD out
of my pocket. the advantage of the best buy options
would be i save on delivery since there is one close
to home.
if i buy one of these could i just plug and play it
or do i have to do something more to make it Fat 32
and speak to my pc and mac?

Pricey for 40GB's but looks portable. Wish I knew if it was a 3.5" or 2.5" drive. If its a 3.5" it too will need an external power supply.
With Erik's comment in mind, this might be your best bet (my pick, budget in mind):

Computer aided Machining (CAM) for OSX
I am in the CNC Machining business. I have made a decision to get my first mac. I know I can operate my windows applications in parallels but, I am considering that a patch. The two main program types we use are CAD and CAM. Currently Rhino (a 3d modeling software CAD) is beta testing & is going to offer CAD for OSX users. Unfortunately I cannot find anyone on the CAM side who is following suite. I currently use MasterCAM (TM) from Dassult Systems (TM). Does anyone out there know of a CAM supplier who is going to be OSX compliant?
Assuming this application provide you manufacturing data , as Mudadassar said you need to check if CAM you are trying to connect is OPC complaint so you can integrate efficiently.
Also you may need to check how that software will provide you data is it available through Webservice ,
Tags which you can connect using PCO or direct Historian database to connect with MII. -
I would like to know whether there is a recommended upgrade for OSX 10.6.8. Is it Mountain Lion? Is there anything I should watch out for in case I do the upgrade? My computer is not working optimally and now my external drive (My Passport, 1TB) is not recognized by my computer. Thanks!
You should try to get your computer working before you upgrade.
Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) model number 3,1 or higher
Your Mac needs:
OS X v10.6.8 or OS X Lion already installed
2 GB or more of memory (More is better - 4 GB minimum seems to be the consensus)
8 GB or more of available space
Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

After many happy years with my PowerBook G4 12" (I will miss it definitely, as compact and cute as it is ;-() I'll now switch to a new MacBook 2.16 GHz with 2 GB RAM and a 120 GB hard drive.
I will have to use Windows (not yet sure if XP or Vista), as I need special software not available for the Mac, so my choice will be Parallels, so that I can work in Os X and at the same time use those Windows Apps I need.
However, I also want to be able to boot Windows-only with BootCamp, so I already learned I have to install Windows on its own partition.
So my question is:
How shall I partition the hard drive?
* If I have one big partition for OSX + documents and the rest (maybe 30 or 40 GB) for Windows, I won't be able to access my documents from Windows, right?
* So I would have to keep the data I want to access from within Windows on a PC formatted partition (if I don't want to pay for a software like MacDrive)?
Or can Windows running in Parallels read from a HFS partition?
* Does this mean: if I want to access (read and write) my documents in OSX and Windows, I have to keep them on a Fat32 partition?
-> This could be the partition where Windows is installed (but I'm not sure if I feel comfortable with that solution) of I would need a 3rd partition (Fat32) for data which would cause quite a big "segmentation" of the hard drive.
How did you resolve this problem?
Unfortunately, I don't see that I could really "separate" data I only have to access from Windows and those I only want to access in OS X, so in my opinion for me they all have to be in one place.
Looking forward to your comments,
Martin
