VMware with MacBook (Black)

Hi guys!
I am about to invest into the MacBook and am doing my research because this is a big purchase for me. After careful consideration, I found that I still would like to use some PC games that are not offered by Mac (i.e. Final Fantasy XI). Then I found that VMware helps with enabling windows on MacOS.
My question is: Would the MacBook (Black, latest 2.4ghz) be able to use VMware and render 3D games from windows at a decent speed? perhaps 30 fps?

"3D GAME INSIGHTS
Notice that the fastest MacBook Pro in the game comparison was the "mid 2007" 17" MacBook Pro with GeForce 8600M. Why? Because the core and memory clock of the graphics processor is allowed to ramp up higher in 17" MacBook Pros -- probably because they have a larger (and therefore more efficient) heat sink than the 15" MacBook Pros.
Just looking at 15" MacBook Pros, the "early 2008" Penryn based MacBook Pros have no advantage over the "2007" Santa Rosa based MacBook Pros with the same graphics processor (GeForce 8600M GT) when it comes to gaming.
We didn't bother to post the numbers, but trust us, you don't want to try running 3D accelerated games on the "Penryn" MacBook or the MacBook Air. They have the integrated GMA X3100 GPU which is a real "dog" when it comes to 3D OpenGL."

*No! Do not buy A MacBook! If you want to use it for all but the oldest games*! You want "VMware and render 3D games from windows at a decent speed? Perhaps 30 fps?" No & it will not when in Boot Camp. Look I have allot of Mac's now a black MacBook given to me by a friend. I also have a MacBookPro, PowerBook & Mac Pro I will not keep listing. ON a MacBook you have no GPU only Intel built in graphics none of the new 3D games from EA will work on it. In VMware & Parallel's both support DX9 you can play games if you have a GPU you will lose about 15% then if you where to run Boot Camp & I would use Boot Camp over VMware or Parallel's but you need a Mac Book Pro at least 65NM 2.2GHz or 2.4GHz & GeForce 8600M GT with DX10 & 128 MB's or 256 MB's of DDR3 Ram both the come with 2 Gig's Of Ram & The new 45NM Mac Book Pro's Even have 2.4, 2.5 & 2.6GHz with no less then 256 MB's DDR3 Ram on GeForce 8600M GT with DX10 & if you want you can get up to 512 MB's of DDR3 Ram with standard 2 Gigs of DDR2 Ram in there. I want you to like Apple. Just so you just do you know their even on sale now at on the Apple store you said "this is a big purchase" I don't want to see you unhappy with your choice even a Mac Book Pro with ATI X1600XT DX9 has 128 or 256 MB's of DDR3 graphics ram with 1 Gig on DDR2 Ram This is from the Apple store EDU. GMA X3100
From Mac Guides
Jump to: navigation, search
The Intel GMA X3100 is the mobile version of the GMA X3000 used in Intel's chipsets. The X3100 supports hardware transform and lighting as well as many other enhancements designed to offer advanced 3D graphics capabilities to a cheap, power-efficient integrated graphics module.
Each of the X3100's pipelines are fully programmable and in theory X3100 can target either DirectX 9 or DirectX 10, determined by operating system and device driver. The pipelines can be dynamically assigned to various tasks like pixel or vertex shading. The X3100 supports OpenGL 1.5 and Shader Model 4.0.

  • Body issues with macbook black

ok well I got this macbook for my birthday the beginning of march. There have been a few things that I have slowly but surely noticed about it.
1.)The body of the macbook doesn't sit flush against itself. When I close the screen, the side of the screen slightly hangs over the side.
2.)I am not sure but I think that it might be peeling.
3.)It seems like, if they painted it, there are bubbles in the paint and/or plastic.
Just a few things that have come to really bother me. I feel that if a family member is going to buy me a gift they should get their moneys worth. I just want to know if there is any way to get this fixed, or if i'll have to deal. Thanks for the help.
    -Andrew

I would take it to an Apple Store and have them look at it. They may replace any defective parts of the case.

    EDIT: RESOLVED
For anyone else who finds their way here like I did, this link did it for me: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/527599/windows-8-issues-solved-please-r ead-if-you-39-re-having-black-screen-and-or-flickering-/
Specifically, the posts by Dunsany and valkyr did the trick.  I booted in safe mode, uninstalled and deleted the Nvidia driver, disabled automatic driver installation, and restarted normally.  I then manually downloaded and installed the previous Nvidia driver for my graphics card (which at the time of this writing was 335.23, rather than the latest which was 337.88), and everything is now bueno!
Two hiccoughs along the way: First, when I tried to uninstall the Nvidia driver the first time, when I restarted I got the login screen (which was a good sign), but it quickly went black again.  I powered down, restarted in safe mode again, and repeated the uninstallation process, and it worked the second time.  Second, when I started the manual install of the 335.23 driver, the computer played a sound similar to the one for disconnecting a USB device, and the screen went black.  I'd seen a lot about trying to increase the brightness (though it hadn't worked up to this point; but if you haven't tried it yet, might as well); I tried it, and it worked! So far I'm back up and running. [/fingers crossed]
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Bad Optical Drive Replaced with a New MacBook Black!

    Hello,
I just wanted to write and let you all know of my 1st experience buying a Mac computer. I needed a laptop, so I
decided on the MacBook. I saw BH Photo had some 1st generation
Macbooks at a decent price, so I took the plunge and bought one.
When it arrived, I tried loading Adobe's Creative Suite software,
however the optical drive keep rejecting the media. So I made an
appointment with an Apple Genius at our local Apple store. To my
surprise, after the Tech confirmed the drive was not working, he
asked me if it would be OK if he just replaced my whole machine. He
brought out a new machine which upgraded me to the 2nd generation
    with a 2ghz duo core 2 processor, a full gig a ram, and a 6x
    superdrive. Wow!
Well, when I arrived home, I once again went through the whole
process of setting up the machine. This time when I placed a cd in
the optical drive it made a horrible mechanical noise, like it was
taking a bite out it. I couldn't believe my bad luck.
Today, I took it back to the Apple Store, and again the Tech
confirmed there was something wrong with the drive. I really thought
that they would just replace the drive for me since they had already
upgraded my machine for free. However, the Tech asked me if I would
like the top of the line Black MacBook since I had to return a second
time. I couldn't believe it...I really had liked the looks of the
black MacBook, but could not justify paying nearly $200 just for the
    black color.
Well, tonight I'm writing to you on my new MacBook Black laptop.
I've got the entire Creative Suite loaded on it along with Lightroom,
and I'm very happy with the performance thus far.
Apple has the best customer service I have ever dealt with...they
just might have won over a new customer for life!
Judgement of a company should not be solely on the mistakes they make, no company is going to be perfect, to me is a much better scale to see what they do about their mistakes...I love my new MacBook Black!

    Awesome, another fellow BlackBook owner.
Coincidentally, I've found Apple's customer service is generally pretty good. I had to exchange my week-old Blackbook b/c of a slight seperation of the screen bezel (next to the iSight). They were really up-front "...this shouldn't be doing this...please have a seat, we'll exchange this for you right away...do you need us to transfer your data?" Wow. Not to rant, but this is a lot different than when we were at Best Buy a year ago and my g/f bought her Vaio (she teaches at a high school that is PC-only, no Mac at all). She uses her old G3 Lombard as a spare and it still runs beautifully.
The Vaio had a blemish on the lid (paint defect on the lid...bubbles) that we brought back the same day. No big deal, just want an exchange. The kid-manager-on-duty told us that it was "within manufacturer's specifications....restocking fee...etc." before even looking at it. We told him it wasn't a pixel, but a paint defect, and he could at least look at it before telling us to "pound sand." After a 10min demand for the store manager, they relented and exchanged the Vaio for us. Her Vaio just had an XP re-install this last weekend but is otherwise in excellent shape.
After our expeirence w/ my Macbook exchange (..."have a seat...transfer data..etc.") she bought herself a new Mac Mini and is anxiously awaiting it to arrive.
    Happy Macs to all.

Does anybody know how to get rid of this problem?

    Hi Steven,
That is known as a kernel panic. They can be caused by many things. The "treatment" is to go through the steps listed here and try them out:

    Hi Tracy,
I'm guessing "ash" is the silver colored keyboard, the same color as the rest of the MBP? If so, that machine, with the optical drive slot on the front, is the older machine.

  • Mini DVI to DVI adapter not working for MacBook BlackRAM upgrade for MacBook black (Early / Mid 2008 model - MB404LL/A)

    Hello.
I have recently purchased an external display monitor (LG D2342P LED) and I am trying to connect my MacBook black - MB404LL/A (Mac OS X 10.6.8, Core2Duo 2.4 GHz) to the LG LED monitor using mini DVI to DVI adapter. The dispay is getting detected by the macbook in the display preferences but the screen shows "No video input" ( as a blank-black that bahaves as no input coming to the Monitor).
Please help, what should I do to connect to the monitor ?  Is there any setting that I am missing that needs to be preconfigured or is this an issue with software update of 10.6.8 ?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply, shldr2thewheel. I ll go ahead with the RAM specification you have mentioned.
Can you please suggest about the Hard Drive, what should be the specification I should be looking for compatibility of my MacBook black ?

  • Please confirm use of mini DVI-Video (s-video) cable with Macbook

    Hi,
I have tried to use the Mini DVI-> Video cable with my new Macbook in order to be able to connect to my TV.
Unfortunately it doesnt work, I do get the resolution change when I plug in the cable but nothing on the TV. I went back to the local Apple center and they tested the cable on a Powerbook G4, it worked flawlessly. Then they tried a monitor on my Macbook's DVI port, it also worked.
But when trying the mini DVI to Video cable on the Macbook, no luck!
Can anybody please confirm they have used this cable and connected successfully to a TV?? Using either the s-video option or composite?
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Best Regards,
    Thomas
    G5 DP2.0, Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I can confirm that the s-video connection to a standard CRT TV using the mini-DVI video adapter does NOT work with my MacBook.
The display is detected, and when mirroring is enabled, the resolution on the MacBook display is adjusted, but the TV doesn't display the MacBook signal. Instead, I get a black screen or some random flickers of color. Following the instructions in the help files, I've adjusted the resolution down to its lowest level with no success.
My guess is that this is related to the fact that the integrated graphics relies on system RAM, and I am running my machine with the stock 512 Mb RAM it shipped with (2 GB are on their way).
On the off chance it would help, I even tried closing the display, in hopes that the memory savings from turning off the MacBook display would enable the TV signal, but no luck.
Thomas, how much RAM do you have in your MacBook?
Those of you who have been successful using external displays, are any of you using the stock 512 Mb RAM?

  • Can't remove battery on Macbook Black

    Hey.
Today I decided it was time to clean my MacBook Black [refurbished], so I powered it down and went to take out the battery. I used a coin to unlock the battery, which didn't seem to pop up. For the life of me, I can't prise the battery out. I don't want to force the thing out, as it's my only battery and I need the laptop for school work.
So yeah, help would be appreciated. The only thing I can think of which may have caused the problem is the fact that the battery was originally very loose, and I asked a guy at my school [who's noramlly very trustworthy and good with Macs] to secure it inside the battery holder and then lock it.

hi there and welcome to apple discussions!
i'd take it back to your tech at school and ask him. i know your probably on vacation, but sometimes staff is there in the summer (at least thats the case in my town )
if you can't get to the tech, take it to an Apple store. if the tech at your school is a Authorized Service Provider, they can take out the battery under warranty. if the person wasn't an ASP, then your warranty is void and you'll have to pay for the labor and parts.
i've always cleaned my MacBook without taking out the battery, and its been fine. what kind of cleaning would you do on a black MacBook anyway?
    hope that helps!

  • Apple Pro Mouse with MacBook?

I'll soon have a black MacBook and I'm looking to buy a mouse. The black Apple Pro mouse would look really good with it, but I realize that it's an old model. Would this still work well on the new MacBook? I looked into the Mighty Mouse, but there are problems with the scroll ball lifespan so I would rather get one without it. Were there any lifespan issues with the Apple Pro mice?

The mouse cord length issue with MacBook -- at least the one I just got -- is that the USB ports are on the left side! I can barely use my old mouse with it, and I'll be looking for either a mouse with a longer cord or some sort of cord extension soon.
Of course that would be no problem at all for lefties.
