VoiceOver announcement problem

Every time I get an e-mail or finish writing a mail I get this voice announcement that it needs my attention. Even when I forget to save a final cut document it speaks. I did switch off the VoiceOver in the Universal Access preferences but it still speaks and muted the voice in the "Open Voice Utility" tab but with no luck! Can someone please help me with this problem? I appreciate any your help.
Regards
M

Hello Jameh,
Sounds as if you are suffering from corrupted Preferences files. To fix this, first make sure System Preferences is not running, then in your ~/Library/Preferences folder, bin the following files:
com.apple.systempreferences.plist
com.apple.speech.synthesis.general.prefs.plist
and empty the trash.
You may have to do a fair bit of resetting of System Preferences, but the problem with Talking Alerts should have gone.
Good luck!

  • VoiceOver Installation Problems - ITunes unknown error (1701)

Is anyone having problems installing VoiceOver on their shuffle? I have set it up and restored a dozen times and after downloading VoiceOver, I get an unknown error (1701) that it cannot be installed on the shuffle.
I have had the shuffle for 2 says and no VoiceOver...

Good question! In order to install the VoiceOver Kit, iTunes writes a version.plist into /Library/Application Support/iTunes/iPodVoiceOver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ which specifies that Apple Software Update should make the VoiceOver Kit available to install on your machine. But if there's an error, iTunes deletes that plist. The commands basically do the same thing iTunes does; it writes that plist back where iTunes had it. Then, when you run softwareupdate --list, we can check which updates are available for your machine, and the VoiceOver Kit should be listed. If it's not listed, that's why you're getting the 1701 error.
One command at a time, the "set +H" temporarily disables the "!-style history expansion" of the BASH shell. We need this because the third command has an exclamation point in it. When you open a new Terminal window, this setting will be back to your default.
The second command creates the directory we're going to write the version.plist into.
The third command writes the version.plist into the directory we created. The contents of this plist are the same as what iTunes writes when you first go to install the VoiceOver Kit.
If you're fast, you can actually see iTunes create that version.plist in /Library/Application Support/iTunes/iPodVoiceOver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ when you click Enable VoiceOver in the iPod settings and Apply. And then when you get the 1701 error, you'll see that iTunes deletes that version.plist.
Finally, softwareupdate --list just lists the available software updates for your machine; it doesn't actually install any. We want to examine that list!

  • Announce Problem - Can't Create Email

Back in June in the archives there's a note about how to cure "Couldn't create announcement email. iWeb encountered an error while attempting to locate your default email program". Old Toad suggested that deleting both /Users/me/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto/Cache.db and /Users/me/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist would solve the problem - as it indeed did for that user. However I have now encountered that problem and the solution does not seem to work for me - anyone have any new suggestions? I hope!

OK - at least I have company. But I have persisted with this a bit. With iPhoto 9.1 and iWeb 3.2.2 I have deleted/emptied com.apple.iPhoto.plist and com.apple.iPhoto from the User Library, set up accounts in iPhoto again deleting all but one POP email account, my MobileMe account and my me.com mail account. I have confirmed all settings in my Apple account. I have rest the order of accounts in iPhoto to make the me.com account top. I have tested sending mail in iPhoto. Everything works. But I just restarted iWeb updated my blog and got the same alert - "iWeb encountered an error while attempting to locate your default email program". Any further guidance would be appreciated.

  • HELP - voiceover recording problem!!!

As I am recording voiceovers, if I make a bad take and either undo the recording or clear it iMovie will at some later point render the audio from the bad clip in place of a newly recorded clip. It appears that iMovie reuses the filename of the deleted voice clip (e.g., "voice 03") for the new voice recording, but then it goes and retrieves the old deleted data and renders it in place of the new data.
This seems like some kind of catastrophic file management problem. If I just undo the bad recordings, iMovie will reuse the bad clips at some point. If I clear the bad clips from iMovie trash, iMovie retrieves them from OS X trash at some point. And when I try to delete them from OS X trash, the system tells me that I can't because they're "still in use."
The only fix I have found is to shut down iMovie, empty OS X trash, reboot iMovie and work 'till the next bad voiceover take. This slows my work process down to a bare crawl.
Has anyone had this problem. Could my copy of iMovie be corrupted in some way? HELP!

There may not be a great solution for this problem. There's some audio bugs that haunt iMovie, and the re-use of file names is one of them.
A quick look suggests the re-use of a name -- where a new voiceover plays the audio of a previously-discarded voiceover -- occurs routinely when the first voice file is in the Mac Trash. This sequence:
    1. Record a voiceover. iMovie creates the file "Voice 01".
    2. You don't like that clip so you delete it.
    3. Save the project. "Voice 01" moves to the Mac Trash. (Usually, but not always.)
    4. Record another voiceover. By default, iMovie names it "Voice 01" again. If there's a file with that name in the Mac Trash, It plays that Trashed clip, not the clip you just recorded.
Note that each time you save, iMovie runs a cleanup routine that removes all the unused (deleted) Media clips from the Media folder. The voiceover clips you've deleted are automatically moved to the Mac Trash.
They stay "busy" in the Mac Trash until you quit iMovie. (I suspect they shouldn't, which may be why you see them played from the Trash.) If you want to get rid of them, or experience problems with iMovie "reusing" a name, quit iMovie. That will break its connection with the files in the Mac Trash so they are no longer "busy". Now you'll be able to empty the Mac Trash if you want.
Instead of deleting the clip, moving the voiceover to an unused section of the audio track might be a solution. Discard them all later, before you quit. They can overlap each other at the end of a track. Not ideal, but it avoids duplicate file names.
Note that if you choose quit, THEN save when iMovie asks, the discarded clips don't go in the Mac Trash.
If you have QuickTime Pro for QuickTime 7, its lets you record audio. You could record the voiceover there and when you are satisfied with it, drag the small icon in the titlebar of the audio movie window to the iMovie timeline. That imports the voiceover to iMovie. (You never have to save the audio clip to disk.)
That may be the best workaround. Note that to discard poor-quality voiceovers in QT Player, just close that window.

  • Voiceover tool problems

I have been using the voiceover tool a lot to dub dialogue and I'm finding it simply stops working 60% of the time.
I am using a Lexicon Omega USB audio input that is recognised in the audio input drop-down, and works every time in STP, but when I use it in FCP it stops registering sound, sometimes halfway through recording.
The only remedy I've found is to switch to 'built-in audio' in the audio input drop-down, then back to the Omega. Even this only works 50% of the time.
Am I th eonly one having this sort of problem with voiceover?

You might want to check out an application called ScreenFlow.

  • Voiceover Recording Problem

I am working on about 20 movies.  This problem is on only 1 of them so far.  I have used the microphone to place many short audio clips onto the movies.  On this one movie new audio clips do not play sound.  There is no ducking checked on any of the files.  Volume is high. The recording sound bar acts normally.  Sound waves look normal when examined.  I can record on other movies and play the sound back.  What is happening here?  Is there a hidden mute control that I might have accidentally hit?  Is this file corrupted?  Thank you for any help.

    Hi
I've tried everything else I've read, found your thread and found a dodgy voiceover file in the project package.  I have deleted that file from the package, but the voiceover files are still not playing in the movie preview.  If I use the clip trimmer the audio plays.
What did you do after you deleted the corrupted file, or did it all just work again?
    Thanks
    Karen

  • VoiceOver recognition problem

Here a lighter side thing that I am curious about...
VoiceOver... Neat but... For the life of me I can't get it to understand when I say "Signals". When I say "play album signals" it always responds "playing album singles"... which is also a great album but I was in the mood for Rush.
Does anyone share my taste in music but has clearer diction than me?

QuickNav is turned on. Simply turn QuickNav off by toggling the left and right arrow keys.

  • Publish and announce problem

I'm using iWeb 06, version 1.1.2. Lately when I publish, it seems to act normally (creates the pages and then publishes in background) and the site in fact gets published, but iWeb won't stop publishing and so won't let me announce the site. This occurred after a hard disk failure and I had to rebuild part of the site (from cutting and pasting from the site in the browser). It publishes fine to a folder. The iWeb expert at Apple said there is nothing wrong with iWeb, and it must be Mobileme; the Mobileme expert said just the opposite. Thanks for any suggestions.

I figured this out. In reconstructing the site after the hard drive failure, I inadvertently created a duplicate page, one with the same name and same content as another page. Once I deleted one of them, everything worked. I figured this out by deleting a number of pages and then publishing, which worked, and then undoing the delete on these pages a few at a time and successfully publishing, until I hit the duplicate page.

  • Complete list of keyboard shortcuts?

    Hello,
I want to learn every keyboard command possible for use with Soundtrack Pro. I use Voiceover, as stated in other posts and in my signature at the bottom of this post. I read the documentation by doing the following:
    1. Turn on Voiceover with Command-F5
    2. Use Control-Option-arrows to move the Voiceover cursor.
    3. Press Control-Option-M to jump to the menu bar.
    4. Select Soundtrack Pro Users Guide from the Help menu.
    5. Preview opens and Voiceover announces this.
    6. Use the Control-Option-arrows to navigate to the outline containing topics.
    7. Press Control-Option-down to interact with the outline.
    8. Use Control-Option-down to navigate through the list of topics.
    9. After landing on the Keyboard Shortcuts, press Control-Option-up to stop interacting with the outline of topics.
    10. Use Control-Option-arrows to navigate to the document content.
    11. Press Control-Option-down to interact with the document.
    12. Use Control-Option-up and down to read line by line through the document.
The issue I have is that the keyboard shortcuts themselves are simply not read by Voiceover. It appears the shortcuts are actually graphics in the manual. This is a real problem, as I have no way to reference them for my use of Soundtrack Pro.
Getting the documentation changed is simply not going to happen. However, if anyone here likes typing a whole lot, I'd appreciate a text only version of the complete list. Here is the format I'd love.
    Command Description
Command-Left Move a selection of clips one grid line to the left.
Command-Right Move a selection of clips one grid line to the right.
I have read most of the manual, and constantly it refers to this appendix A for keyboard shortcuts. I'll get way more use out of the program once I have a way to keyboard my way through it.
Thanks so much to whomever actually makes an attempt to tackle such a task.
    Ryan

For a change Lee Jay, I can help you.
Here is a link to a wonderful site run by the "Lightroom Queen" and she has posted a list of all of the shortcuts for LR. There is one for 1.4.1 and one for 2.0.

  • Logic 8 Ducker plugin causing audio hang-up

when the stop button or the space bar is pressed during playback, the ducker plugin with the lookahead feature turned on causes the audio of the sidechained track to hang-up repeating a small half second sample over and over. in this case a voiceover announcement. I've tried re-booting and re-estblishing the plugin but it keeps doing it. when the lookahead feature is turned off it works great but I need the music bed to start ducking before the voiceover announcement begins for a smoother effect.
Logic 7.2 did not have this problem.
Also, both Logic 7.2 and Logic 8 puts the duration of the lookahead feature at the top of a bounced file creating the need to re-trim the beginning of every bounced file.

    HI Sereen & Pancenter,
Great suggestions. I did follow the instructions that at the link Pancenter listed.....But no change in the results. Still crashing w/the Transform/Transpose....features.
Otherwise all the other "Transform" features work ....just not "traspose".
I am on Logic 8. I probably will upgrade to Logic 9 to see if this bug gets fixed. I guess I need to do that anyway as Logic 8 also won't controll a weighted yamaha keyboard (USB) that I bought about a year ago. Logic kept trying to blame Yamaha  and Yamaha was blaming Logic. Talk about being between a rock and a hard place.
And Pancenter you are right - the Terabyte is storage. the RAM I have is 2 gig.
Thanks so much! Great forum support!

  • After restore from Time Machine Software Upgrade is not working.....

After I restored my complete system from Time Machine, some parts of it is not working and announcing problem to start, e.g. Software Update, My Day from Office 2008....what should I do?

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
First, are you running Leopard or Snow Leopard? Your settings at the bottom of your post say Snow Leopard, but this is the +Leopard > Time Machine+ forum, so I'm not sure which is right.
Did you do the full system restore, starting by booting from your OSX disc? If not, what exactly did you do?
Exactly what is wrong with Software Update? What happens, or doesn't happen?

    Hi,
This behavior is by design. Exchange 2010 server is not going to accept any SIP messages from Exchange 2013 server because it is not listed as UM IP Gateway. Therefore, even if Exchange 2013 redirected the SIP INFO packet to Exchange 2010, it will fail.
During migration\coexistance scenario, this feature (Missed call notifications from Lync server) will not work for legacy users whose mailbox is still in Exchange 2010.

  • Mac Pro Health Hazard?

    Hi,
I had purchased a Mac Pro 2.66 Intel in 2007. I had noticed an unusual smell every time I powered up my Mac Pro for the first couple of months. Being a Graphic Designer, I work up to 10 hours in front of my computer each day.
I had read an article online (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10055928-37.html), which says that Mac Pros emit benzene. And benzene is known to have adverse effect on White Blood Cells (WBC) (http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=even-at-low-levels-benzen).
I do a Comprehensive Full Body Health checkup at the hospital every year. The results were normal until 2006. The 2007 and 2008 results showed that my WBC count has lowered. There was no change in my diet or work habits except for the New Mac Pro.
    PLEASE, I NEED HELP!
Should I get rid of my Mac Pro and buy something else?
Or is it safe to continue using my Mac Pro?
    Thank You

Apple has already announced they did extensive testing and found no evidence of a health hazard from using the Mac Pro. The existence of or cause of the announced problem is unclear at the moment. The news report was from a French researcher, and thus far there's no confirmation or corroboration of any claim of benzene emissions from the Mac Pro. As the article states Apple is still looking into the report.
The fact that your WBC has lowered means nothing in and of itself. It certainly isn't proof that there is a problem with the computer.
Whether you sell the computer is only a decision you can make.
FWIW, you may not have a 2007 model. The one you have is a 2006 model. Open System Profiler in the Utilities folder and check your MachineID. The 2007 models have an ID of 2,1. If yours is 1,1 then it's actually a 2006 model.

  • Audio Waveforms in Timeline

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature.
I recently had cause to do some quick and dirty audio editing of voiceover announcements. I used the V/O tool to record the announcements and then used that sequence as the source clip for cutting the final sequence. Initially the waveforms displayed in the final sequence, but once the FCP window refreshed (hide FCP then unhide) the waveforms disappeared. They now seem to be gone forever. If I drop a clip (rather than the first sequence) onto the timeline it shows the waveforms, but nothing I do will show waveforms where the first sequence is the source material.
    Can anybody enlighten me?
Dual G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   FCP 5.04, Decklink Extreme, SanMan RAID

We've completed the edit. So I have marked the question answered. Thanks to everybody for their help.
It is now more a philosophical issue about why such limitations/features exist. It seems to me there is no good reason for not having the waveforms available if you want them. If you don't you can always turn them off.
I sometimes find it difficult to get my head around some of the things that Apple have done. As I come from a photographic background rather than having formal training in this industry I am often unclear as to whether there is a lack of understanding on my part, or a different paradigm on Apple's. The way the voiceover tool requires you to turn off your video monitor is a case in point. This makes it pretty hard to do ADR.

    Hi George237,
Welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
The button is not completely still, so it does move a little, however this is completely normal. if you however believe that this is to loose, you can take the device back to the place of purchase.
    I hope this helps.
