VPC to ASA5525-X
From the ASA I should be able to ping 10.170.105.1 without a route because they are directly connected, yes? Unless the ASA does not follow the same rules. I also noticed in the show int tru command that po105 is forwarding "none"

spanning-tree port type edge trunk was added. I did not know that was a command. I thought normal would work. Although that didnt fix the issue it was good to know, I probably need to add that to my vPC's to my NetApp and ESX Hosts. To solve the issue I created the vlan for 105 on the Nexus. UGH! That gets me all the time, unlike IOS where it creates the vlan for you, nexus doesn't. That has bitten me more than once! Thanks for the knowledge on spanning-tree!

Back to Back vPC - Why is it not possible?
Good Evening!
I'm studying for CCDP and am currently sitting on page 271 for those of you that have the official book (642-874).
Similar topology to book here.
If I understand correctly, in an Active/Active FEX design two Cisco Nexus 5000s plug into two Cisco Nexus 2000s which in turn plug into the server. There is a two way vPC between the 2000s and 5000s (it doesn't look like that's shown in the picture though). However, because there is a vPC between the FEXs and the Nexus 5000 you cannot have a vPC between the FEXs and the servers. Why is this? Any clarification on at a conceptual level of how an Active/Active FEX configuration works is also appreciated. I've read the section, but since I haven't had hands on with any of this equipment I'm having some trouble conceptualizing everything. Thanks for your time.

Answer: No you can have VPC between the Fex and the servers.

Routing issue in Nexus 7009 due to vPC or hsrp
we have two site's, on first site we have two nexus 7009 switches (Nexus A & Nexus B) and other site is remote site having two 6500 switches. (design attached)
we are using hsrp on nexus switches and Active is Nexus A for all vlan’s
From one of my remote site user's (user's are in vlan 30 ) are not able to communicate with nexus site vlan 20 specially if host in vlan 20 take forwarding path from nexus switch B,
I can ping the vlan 20 both physical address's and gateway (vlan 20 configured in both nexus switch and using HSRP) from vlan 30 which configured on remote site 6500 switch
ospf with area 0 is the routing protocol running between both site.
vlan 10 we are using as a management vlan on both nexus switch that building neighbore ship with WAN router, it's means wan router have two neighbors nexus A and nexus B, but nexus B building the neigbhorship via a Nexus A because from WAN router we have single link which is terminated on Nexus A,
there is one layer 2 switch between nexus A and WAN router, nexus A site that switch port in vPC because we are planning to pull second link later to nexus B.
All user's are connected with edge switch and edge switch have a redundant uplink to nexus A and B with vPC configured
After troubleshooting we observe that if user in vlan 20 wants to communicate with vlan 30 (remote site), traffic is taking Nexus B is forwarding path, then gets drops.
I run the tracert from pc its showing route till SVI on Nexus B after that seems packets not finding route. Even vlan 30 routes are available in the routing table of Nexus B. we don’t have any access-list and Firewall between this path.Hi,
I suspect in your scenario that traffic is being dropped due to the characteristics of vPC, the routing table on Nexus-B may reflect the next-hop address for the destination IP, however if that next-hop address is the address of the Nexus-A off of VLAN 20 then it will be forwarded across the vPC peer-link, this breaks the convention.
When you attach a Layer 3 device to a vPC domain, the peering of routing protocols using a VLAN also carried on the vPC peer-link is not supported. If routing protocol adjacencies are needed between vPC peer devices and a generic Layer 3 device, you must use physical routed interfaces for the interconnection.
You can configure VLAN Interfaces for Layer 3 connectivity on the vPC peer devices to link to Layer 3 of the network for such applications as HSRP and PIM. However, Cisco recommend that you configure a separate Layer 3 link for routing from the vPC peer devices, rather than using a VLAN network interface for this purpose.
Take a look at the following URL, this article helps to explain the characteristics of vPC and routing over the peer-link:
http://bradhedlund.com/2010/12/16/routing-over-nexus-7000-vpc-peer-link-yes-and-no/

Allan.

Is it possible to Configure VPC Between N5010 and 6513
Hello Gents,
Please let me know if we can configure VPC Between N5010 and 6513(coreswitch).
IF Yes, Does it have any loops or abnormal traiffc behaviour ?
Please refer the attached mail for current network diagram
1) I would like to establish VPC Between N5010 and Cisco 6513 switch
2) if yes, Does the upstream devices above 6513 core switch will forward the traffic from all the
6513 ports connected to N5000 ports or 6513 will send traffic from one up link and block other
uplink ports as part of STP.
3) Is VSS on 6513 is required for Point #1
Please refer some links on this as well.
Appreciate your quick response.
Thanks and Regards,
KA.Hi Karim ,
You can use this one - you can consider your 6k the FEX as in this example
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps9441/ps9670/configuration_guide_c07-543563.html
On the portchannel to 6k will not configure :
"switchport mode fex-fabric"
"fex associate 100"
This configuration in indended to be used with FEX.

Remote Desktop Connection Solution, VPC NOT an option
I downloaded Remote Desktop Connection yesterday B/C I wanted to be able to do work on my mac, I have virtual PC with WINXP but it was way to slooow.
I do not want to play games, I play games on my compaq laptop that's in a full sized docking station.
So I was looking and reading at this software (RDC) and it sounded like a viable option, My laptop has a 14" monitor but the iMac is a 17".
so I downloaded it and set it up, BTW my connection is iMac to Laptop docking station I used a "Crossover Cable".
Set the IP address and I have (Sorry to say) windows on my MAC for nuthing!
It works great ALOT faster than VPC (since it does not have to emulate a Intel CPU).
And the Laptop monitor goes to sleep after 1 minute so now I can have the best of both worlds!I'm not quite sure why you posted this.
You marked your post as a question... but I can't find one.
Do you have a question or was this somewhat of an "informational" post? -
Problem with Virtual PC and Network Connection - VPC gets disconnected
Hi,
I've been having a few problems with a virtual computer and its network connection. I've set up a few computers the same way over the years and they all work fine except this one. We use the Virtual PC and XP mode to access our data from an older
program. The databases are on a server, which are accessed as a mapped drive. Every once in a while (with no particular pattern, sometimes it doesn't happen all day, sometimes it happens every 5 mins), the VPC gets disconnected from the network,
my program returns a file read error and then everything is frozen. When I try to ipconfig/release and renew, it releases correctly then it won't renew. I need to shut down the VPC from the Win7 task manager and even so, it doesn't shut it down,
even when I try to kill the vpc process. The only way it'll come back up is if I restart the computer. The network connection on the Win7 computer doesn't do that.
Is there anything I can do to fix this ?
Thanks,
MelanieHi,
Does it become more stable now, actually, I'm afraid that this issue is not related with the drive letter or name. Since you're using bridge mode, the I would suggest you use NAT as a test, it is the default network configuration, which allows the VM
to leverage the external TCP/IP network connected to the host. This is very useful if you regularly move the host computer between different network configurations. NAT is the preferred networking option when there is a shortage of IP addresses, a need to
ensure the VM’s IP address is not targetable from an external network, or a need for connecting using WWAN.

Best Practice for VPC Domain failover with One M2 per N7K switch and 2 sups
I Have been testing some failover scenarios with 4 nexus 7000 switches with an M2 and an F2 card in each. Each Nexus has two supervisor modules.
I have 3 VDC's Admin, F2 and M2
all ports in the M2 are in the M2 VDC and all ports on the F2 are in the F2 VDC.
All vPC's are connected on the M2 cards, configured in the M2 VDC
We have 2 Nexus representing each "site"
In one site we have a vPC domain "100"
The vPC Peer link is connected on ports E1/3 and E1/4 in Port channel 100
The peer-keepalive is configured to use the management ports. This is patched in both Sups into our 3750s. (this is will eventually be on a management out of band switch)
Please see the diagram.
There are 2 vPC's 1&2 connected at each site which represent the virtual port channels that connect back to a pair of 3750X's (the layer 2 switch icons in the diagram.)
There is also the third vPC that connects the 4 Nexus's together. (po172)
We are stretching vlan 900 across the "sites" and would like to keep spanning tree out of this as much as we can, and minimise outages based on link failures, module failures, switch failures, sup failures etc..
ONLY the management vlan (100,101) is allowed on the port-channel between the 3750's, so vlan 900 spanning tree shouldnt have to make this decision.
We are only concerned about layer two for this part of the testing.
As we are connecting the vPC peer link to only one module in each switch (a sinlge) M2 we have configured object tracking as follows:
n7k-1(config)#track 1 interface ethernet 1/1 line-protocol
n7k-1(config)#track 2 interface ethernet 1/2 line-protocol
n7k-1(config)#track 5 interface ethernet 1/5 line-protocol
track 101 list boolean OR
n7k-1(config-track)# object 1
n7k-1(config-track)# object 2
n7k-1(config-track)# object 5
n7k-1(config-track)# end
n7k-1(config)# vpc domain 101
n7k-1(config-vpc-domain)# track 101
The other site is the same, just 100 instead of 101.
We are not tracking port channel 101, not the member interfaces of this port channel as this is the peer link and apparently tracking upstream interfaces and the peer link is only necessary when you have ONE link and one module per switch.
As the interfaces we are tracking are member ports of a vPC, is this a chicken and egg scenario when seeing if these 3 interfaces are up? or is line-protocol purely layer 1 - so that the vPC isnt downing these member ports at layer 2 when it sees a local vPC domain failure, so that the track fails?
I see most people are monitoring upstream layer3 ports that connect back to a core? what about what we are doing monitoring upstream(the 3750's) & downstream layer2 (the other site) - that are part of the very vPC we are trying to protect?
We wanted all 3 of these to be down, for example if the local M2 card failed, the keepalive would send the message to the remote peer to take over.
What are the best practices here? Which objects should we be tracking? Should we also track the perr-link Port channel101?
We saw minimal outages using this design. when reloading the M2 modules, usually 1 -3 pings lost between the laptops in the diff sites across the stretched vlan. Obviously no outages when breaking any link in a vPC
Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.
NickNick,
I was not talking about the mgmt0 interface. The vlan that you are testing will have a link blocked between the two 3750 port-channel if the root is on the nexus vPC pair.
Logically your topology is like this:
| |
| Nexus Pair |
3750-1-----------------------3750-2
Since you have this triangle setup one of the links will be in blocking state for any vlan configured on these devices.
When you are talking about vPC and L3 are you talking about L3 routing protocols or just intervaln routing.
Intervlan routing is fine. Running L3 routing protocols over the peer-link and forming an adjaceny with an router upstream using L2 links is not recommended. Teh following link should give you an idea about what I am talking here:
http://bradhedlund.com/2010/12/16/routing-over-nexus-7000-vpc-peer-link-yes-and-no/
HSRP is fine.
As mentioned tracking feature purpose is to avoid block hole of traffic. It completely depends on your network setup. Don't think you would be needing to track all the interfaces.

What is the best way to connect a firewall cluster to a VPC domain
Hi All
Can anyone help me decide what is the best way to connect a firewall cluster to a VDC running in a pair of N7K's which is a VPC domain?
Can I configure a VLAN interface on each VDC and use HSRP? I was planning on presenting one 10GB cable from each VDC to each firewall. Would this work OK? HSRP traffic will go across the VPC peer link correct?
thanks allNo, but the one caveat is vpc orphan ports. If the vpc link between the nexus switches fails for any reason, all the vpc ports on the vpc secondary switch will be forced down. So it's recommended to connect single port devices to the primary vpc switch so the connections stay up. But if you're ok with that, then I don't see any problems.
You have a few options, one would be to run a separate link between your nexus switches for non-vpc vlans. These vlans would not be allowed over the vpc peer-link, or forwarded out vpc's.

10.4.3 with VPC problems
Not sure where to post this but here goes...
I've used VPC for years. Started having problems with it after I installed Tiger so I decided to upgrade it to the latest 7.0.2. One of the problems I was having still persists and I have a new one.
1. In internet explorer when I go to a web site that has text entry fields I can't get my cursor to go into the text field. Either with the mouse or the tab key. So... I can't log into a website that I need to access through Windows. I can't even figure out how to uninstall Explorer and just reinstall it again.
2. Now that I have upgraded my VPC I am now given a window that asks me to authenticate Windows because I have significantly upgraded my hardware since installing it. When I try to authenticate selecting the internet option and pressing "Next" the button indents but does nothing. Just sits there. So I can't authenticate it. Very frustrating.
Any Virtual PC experts out there who can help me? At first I thought this might be a Tiger problem but now I am thinking it is a Windows problem. I really wish I didn't need Windows at all.
thanks,
charleneFirefox didn't perform well on the site I want to view. It
worked but the sound breaks up.
Might want to try FF 1.5 if you haven't updated already.
THe sound breakup might be more a function of the translations VPC has to do to get the sound to play through the Mac speakers as opposed to a FF problem.
When I tried it today from my desktop with MIE in VPC 6 and
10.3.9 the sound was perfect. ... powerbook [is]
newer and faster has newer OS and uptodate VPC - so should
work better right?
logic says yes, but in reality, maybe not - there's less overhead with the older versions of both the OS and VPC.
(So the older version may actually be more efficient than the new version) I've noticed some lack of coordination between video and audio even on older CD based games (from win95 era)
You can speed up VPC a bit by turning off all the eye candy - animated menus, shadows, etc, as well as lowering the VPC screen resulution and color depth. If you can, give it all the memory you can (512mb is max) -
Problems in using Windows Explorer with VPC Virtual PC?
Has anybody experienced problems in using Windows Explorer with VPC Virtual PC?
Lacking any "forbidden" or "appropriate usage" guidelines, I regularly use Windows Explorer (Windows 2000) to transfer file from the desktop. I have occasionally sensed that this might be wrong. Today I inadvertently clicked the MAC harddrive instead of the Desktop (within Windows Explorer) and caused all manner of mischief.
Any other views please?Let me correct this:
I regularly use Windows Explorer (Windows 2000) to transfer files from the "Mac" desktop
Any ideas please Virtual PC VPC users? -
Sanyo VPC 1000HD H.264 Not Compatible with QuickTime or FCP
I recently aquired the Sanyo Xacti-VPC 1000HD.
From the results I've observed so far, it's a terrific camera for the price.
My problem, and I know this has been touched in this forum to a limited degree, is that FCP and QuickTime see the MP4 (H.264) files generated by this camera as green screens.
Sanyo suggests that regressing to QuickTime 7.1.6 is the way to go since it supposedly works while the newest update QuickTime 7.2 strangely only creates a green screen... and some user bad language.
I was hoping my upgrade to Leopard (wow 300+ improvements) would cure this issue with FCP 6.0 but noo, green is "in" these days and that's all FCP 6.0 will show me when I import any of those files.
No doubt this situation will be rectified over time and I know this camera is relatively new to the market BUT I would like to find a means of cutting it's output NOW.
I tried the one solution offered in an earlier posting of regressing to QuickTime 7.1.6.
It did sorta work briefly (choppy video playback but no green screen) but later launches of FCP 6.0 just resulted in FCP launch aborts.
Another poster suggested that iMovie '08 w/QT 7.2 handled Sanyo h.264 files okay but apparently iMovie '08 on my MacBookPro (purchased spring 2007) prefers green as well.
I do hope someone can forward a workable solution as I really like this camera.
They have a demo video available at through the Sanyo site of some music performance that proves someone is doing nice editing with the Sanyo VPC-1000HD h.264 files, though I have no idea what technology they are using?
Anyway, any and all responses would be greatly appreciated.

jcreweAbout QTs encoding size the clip is not forced to 4:3 resolution of 320x240, instead it is resized to fit in the boundaries of a 320x240 rectangle. i.e. a 640x268 clip I had, was resized to 320x134.
-it supports non-mod16 resolutions like the one above or 317x240.
found some info on profiles:
QuickTime only supports up to Main Profile. None of the High Profile settings such as 8x8 intra are supported by Apple. If you try to encode your x264 video with these settings, it will NOT play on QuickTime.
AVC/H.264 Profiles
The AVC/H.264 standard defines four different Profiles: Baseline, Main, Extended and High Profile (which themselves are subdivided into Levels):
- Baseline Profile offers I/P-Frames, supports progressive and CAVLC only
- Extended Profile offers I/P/B/SP/SI-Frames, supports progressive and CAVLC only
- Main Profile offers I/P/B-Frames, supports progressive and interlaced, and offers CAVLC or CABAC
- High Profile (aka FRExt) adds to Main Profile: 8x8 intra prediction, custom quants, lossless video coding, more yuv formats (4:4:4...)
Does anyone have more info on the specs of Baseline 1.3?
Google was not my friends on that one. -

Question re. behaviour of single homed FEX with vPC
Hi Folks,
I have been looking at configuring Nexus 5Ks with FEX modules. Referring to the Cisco documentation;
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5000/sw/layer2/513_n1_1/b_Cisco_n5k_layer2_config_gd_rel_513_N1_1_chapter_01001.html
In figure 3. showing a single homed FEX with vPC topology, I'm curious what happens if one of the 5Ks fail. For example if the 5K on the left hand side of the diagram fails do the ports on the attached FEX that the server is attached to drop? If not I would assume that the server has no way of knowing that there is no longer a valid path through those links and will continue to use them?
Many thanks in advance,
Shane.Hello Shane.
Depending of type of the failureboth n5k can tace corrective actions and end host will always know that one of the port-channel members is down.
For example if one 5k will crash or will be reloaded - all connected fexes alre will go offline. FEX are not standalone switches and cannot work without "master" switch.
Also links which will go from fex to the end-host will be in vpc mode which means that all vpc redundancy features/advantages will be present.
