VPN Update Fixes L2TP Connectivity

I noticed this Apple Update for OS X Server this morning. After applying the update to my server, I can now VPN using L2TP externally. Tested on a Mac client and iPhone (LTE).

Not to change the topic, but to be clear, what are the ports I need forwarded for L2TP, just 1701 and 1900, right?
TCP ports for VPN are just 1723. UDP ports for VPN are 500, 1701, 4500. I think you need both sets and make sure "Back to my MAC" is not used as it conflicts with VPN.

  • How can I configure Lion server to accept inbound VPN (L2TP) connections while connected as client to another vpn service?

    I have what I believe to be a unique need;
I have a MacPro (1,1) running Lion with Server app.
I require that this particular machine be connected as a client to a VPN server, while at the same time acting as a VPN server for my network.
The PPTP connection configuration is such that "Send all traffic over VPN connection" is checked.
If PPTP client is NOT connected, I can connect to Lion as VPN server. As soon as I make the connection from Lion as a client, I can no longer
    connect to Lion VPN server.
I understand this is because I am forcing all traffic out the virtual interface (tun0) and eth0 is no longer listening on the local network.
    1. Is it possible to bind the VPN client (on Lion Server) to a particular interface? If I could tell the PPTP client to only use eth1 as the interface of choice, my assumption would be that eth0 would then be free to accept incoming connections.
    2. Is it possible to bind the VPN service  (on Lion Server) to a particular interface? if I could tell the vpn serviec to only listen on eth1, and in turn tell the PPTP client to NOT communicate on eth1 but only eth0 then perhaps I could separate the communications?
In my head, it seems as though both of the above options would be required in order to use Lion as both a VPN server and VPN client
    Any and all help appreciated.

This is a standard facet of most VPNs - the problem lies in your NAT router since both clients appear to come from the same IP address as far as the VPN server is concerned, and the router can't separate out the traffic.
There are a couple of solutions.
First, the built-in VPN server supports L2TP and PPTP protocols. You should be able to connect one system under each protocol, so that gets your two machines connected.
Second, you can replace your NAT router with one that supports multiple VPN clients (often termed 'VPN passthrough').
Third, setup a site-to-site tunnel so that your entire LAN is connected to the VPN (this saves you from having to run a separate VPN client on each machine, but is typically only worth it when you have more machines).

  • Limited number of 5 concurrent VPN (ipsec/l2tp) connections to OSX Server

We've configured OS X 10.6 Server on XServe to accept VPN connections either via PPTP or via IPSEC/L2TP using a PreSharedKey.
When multiple clients try to connect using IPSec/L2TP, we experience problems as soon as 5 users are connected. No additional ipsec/l2tp connections can be created until one of the 5 existing connections is terminated, but then a new connection can start immediately.
Sniffing with tcpdump, the following can be seen on the server side:
    09:24:45.349541 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 I ident
    09:24:45.354978 IP serverIP.isakmp > clientIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 R ident
    09:24:45.358233 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 I ident[E]
    09:24:45.365359 IP serverIP.isakmp > clientIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 R ident[E]
    09:24:45.367222 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 2/others I oakley-quick[E]
    09:24:47.365936 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 2/others I oakley-quick[E]
    09:24:50.365799 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 2/others I oakley-quick[E]
The last lines are repeated several times, until the connection attempt times out.
When using PPTP connections, we don't experience these problems, and in addition PPTP connections can even be created when 5 ipsec/l2tp connections are already established.
Does anyone know if there is some kind of limitation for the number of concurrent ipsec/l2tp connections built into OS X server? So far, we have not seen anything like this in the docs.

Ok, IMAP server almost universally allow multiple connections. Thunderbird as you would have observed uses 5 if they are available. As Airmail suggested, iphones just use more and more until they exhaust the available connections. There is no set maximum option.
However there are other things that can consume connections and some may surprise you.

this still didn't fix iPad connectivity after updating to iOS 6.0.1 !!! intermittent wi-fi connection, even with a direct line-of-sight to the router.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Can not establish L2TP connection to Mac Server via VPN

    Hi,
I am asking for some help on this VPN Problem:
since yesterday I have a new Mac mini Server running OS X 10.9.3 and Server Software 3.1.2 - my goal is to reach some deivces in my home network from outside, mainly with the iPhone or iPad.
    Dyn.org
I registered with Dyn.com a hostname using my outside IP Address. Server Type: Host with IP Address and used the IP Address presented to me in the stup wizard. This one is shown as active and when I ping or Lookup the Host Name it is responding - so I think I am fine here.
    Mac Mini Server
Next I have setup a user on the server who can use VPN. Next I have setup the VPN service with L2TP, using the Host name von dyn.org, a nice shared secret, IP range 10.0.1.190 to 10.0.1.199, DNS 10.0.1.1, no routs.
I exported this as config file to my iPhone.
The VPN Protocol in the Server says, it is listening for connections.
When I turn on VPN on the iPhone it replies always L2TP-VPN-Server has not answered.
    AirPort Extreme
The AirPort Extreme is configured by the Server with Ports 500, 1701, 4500 and the Mac Server 10.0.1.26 as Privat IP Address.
The Internet Tab shows Router and DNS as 192.168.211.1 and IPv4 Address as 192.168.211.109
I actually do not understand why I have a 192.168.xxx.xxx DNS and router entry while I have the Privat Network on 10.0.1.xxx
The Protocol for VPN just says nothing at all, besides that it is listening. I guess something is blocking the connection to the server.
By looking at my above configutation - what am I doing wrong? Why do I get this L2TP-VPN-Server error message? I changed the password for the user to be sure I am not miss spelling it. Did not help.
    Any idea?
    Thank you for your support!
    Regards
    Klaus-Martin

According to your IP addresses you listed, you might have two devices that are trying to create a NATed network (one in the 10.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.0.0/16 networks). Can you list what devices you have between your server and the Internet?
I'm going to take a guess that you have a router/modem prodived by your ISP, and this is going to give you a 192.168.211.0/24 network (since it set up as a router to provide its own network). You then plugged an Airport into this router and configured it to set up its own wireless network on its own subnet (10.0.1.0/24). The server is on this network, sees the Airport (and lets you configure it). So while your hostname points to your external address (which is good), it's just that external address is the WAN side of the modem/router and not the Airport. I think your network is set up like this: Internet  --> ISP modem  -->  Airport --> Server. If this is the case, you need to set up the ISP modem/router to port forward L2TP ports to your Airport (which in turn, port forward to your server). Or you could set your ISP modem/router into bridge mode and have the Airport dial the connection to the ISP (more complicated).
Have you tried VPN from the local network, say put the phone on wifi and make sure that works? This would be a quick test to make sure the phone and server are set up properly.
Also, have you tried port scanning your host from a computer outside your network, like from an iPhone on celluar? That would help you determine if you have routing configured properly for the L2TP VPN ports.

  • Software updater fails to connect to server. How can I fix?

Software updater fails tp connect with the server. I have tried a restart and checked network connections and internet access. I have no problems connecting to internet, App Store and iTunes Store. Help!

If you know what downloads to look for you get them from support.apple.com.  For example the 10.6.8 combo update v1.1 can be found here.
The probelm is knowing what to look for and that's why softwere update comes in handy even if you don't want to have it do the downloads.  What's probably going on was that the servers looked by software update were either temporarily down, or as mentioned above, overloaded.  Wait a while and try it again.

  • 10.5: VPN clients can't connect to each other

    Hey all,
I've got a bit of an odd problem. Got my VPN server setup and working fine on 10.5.4. Clients can connect in, mount file shares, etc. However, if we have multiple clients connected in via VPN, they can't connect to each other. They can't ping each other or anything. I've checked firewalls, etc, on the client machines, and everything looks fine.
Machines within the network can ping and connect to them both, it's just when they're trying to connect to one another that the problem occurs. Any ideas why this might be, and any possible solutions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

    OSX 10.8.4 latest updates
Suddenly stopped connecting to any wireless network which is secured, WEP/WPA/WPA2/personal/enterprise all do NOT work.
Connects to unsecured networks just fine.
For example, our wireless password is:
    123456890!
I tried with WPA2, no luck.
Tried with WPA2 and pw 1234567890, no luck.
Tried with WPA and pw 1234567890!, no luck.
Tried with WPA and pw 1234567890, no luck.
Tried WEP with 1234567890, no luck.
Tried with NO SECURITY on this wi-fi network, connected right away.
-I did reset PRAM, no luck.
-I deleted from Keychain, no luck.
-I added as prefered network and removed, no luck.
-I added new network location, no luck.
-I removed the Wi-fi network adapter, rebooted, activated, no luck.
-In the mac console logs, all I see are "wlEvent: en1 en1 link DOWN" when I try to connect to my secured wireless network (home or my office or even at a neighbors).
    -Wireless diagnostics tell me nothing
-Console logs do not tell me anything
-Warranty is expired and no AppleCare
Seems like a bug to me, even though I have tried with a Netgear, Cisco/Linksys, D-Link router and even tried tethering to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and iPhone 5, all same problem, says "Connection failed."
    APPLE FRIENDS HELP ME PLEASE!

For example, our wireless password is: 123456890!
Well a password that weak will get cracked in about 6 hours on just about any PC in the area.

  • Software Update can't connect to server -- error

I have Tiger 10.4.7 on a 600mH white G3 dual USB iBook. When I try to use the SoftwareUpdate function off the Apple Menu to check for any updates to Tiger, the "checking for new software" window starts up all right but immediately the error message window appears with "Software Update can't connect to the update server."
I'm otherwise connected to the internet all right and everything is working. I tried trashing the com.apple.softwareupdate.plist file from the Library/Preferences and the user/Library/Preference/ and restarting, but this didn't do it either.
I've had this problem before and it has "become" fixed, but I don't know exactly what sequence does it. Any help, please?
    PM9600/233 (OS 8.6); G3 white iBook (10.4.7)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

No, I didn't try creating a new user, in part because once before doing that only made things more complicated and didn't solve any problems.
Software Update simply started working again. No idea why.
However, even after several days, Safari is still reporting that it cannot connect to the server for any URL put in. I've restarted Safari, reset Safari, manually emptied all caches, removed cookies. All very odd!
    Firefox is working just fine.

  • BM VPN causing dial-up connections to disappear - Air Card

I'm having an issue with BM VPN. I have an end user on an XP laptop who needs to connect via BM VPN using his Verizon Wireless Broadband Air Card. The Broadband Cards are always listed under Dial-Up Connections in Network Connections, but after installing BM VPN, the dial-up connections are no longer there and if I try to manually create a connection, it is greyed out. Also, to no avail, the following services in XP are not turned on and for the life of me I cannot get them to start:
    Remote Accesss Auto Connection Manager
    Remote Accesss Connection Manager
From what I've read, these services must be on in order to create a new dial-up connection. The Broadband card refuses to connect due to the fact that a dial-up connection cannot be created. The Broadband card and software were installed and working before BM VPN was installed. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling BM VPN, but that didn't fix the problem.
Also, if I look under the Novell Client properties, Location Profiles Tab, VPN, Properties, Properties again, and finally the VPN Dial-Up tab, there is a message that says "A VPN dial-up initialization has occurred. Microsoft Dial-Up Networking is not installed." I don't know if this means anything or is related to the problem, but I thought I'd relay this information as well. I looked for ways to reinstall the Microsoft Dial-Up Networking, but all articles refer to Windows 95 or 98 installations. I've also reinstalled Windows XP SP3 successfully, but it didn't fix the problem.
Has anyone else ever ran into a problem like this and can help me? I'm so lost and desperate for help. Thanks.

I'm not sure how to recover on the system that is currently broken -
though I suspect some form of remove/reinstall MS components should get
    you back running again.
When you install the VPN client, and you select the dial-up option, it
basically tries to integrate the MS dial up networking system into VPN
menus. I don't think it really invents anything new there. If there
is something non-standard on the dial-up entries, it may be that the
VPN installation doesn't handle it properly. I don't know, because
I've not installed that component or used it in years.
What I would recommend is to not install the dial-up component on with
the VPN client. Just leave it off, make a usual dial-up connection,
and then launch the VPN client. The VPN dial-up component just
tries to manage all of that so you do it with less button clicks.

  • Software update fails on connection interrupt

I have two computers, one an Intel Core i5 runing 10.7.2, and the other a Core i7 running 10.7.3. Software Update hangs on checking for new software, or at the start of downloading. The problem seems like it may be related to Airport WiFi. I've noticed that at somewhat random timing, when Software Update is run, the Internet connection on both my DSL modem, and the AirPort Base Station network is dropped, and then comes back in a minute or two. The hang or failure to fetch files follows this interupt. Connection is solid at all other times. (I run connection timing on the menu bar). This is what I get from System.log on the Console:

May  3 18:16:15 Gregs-MacBook-Pro Software Update[6626]: Layout still needs update after calling -[WebHTMLView layout].  WebHTMLView or one of its superclasses may have overridden -layout without calling super. I get an error dialoge that says:
"Software Update can’t connect to the update server. Make sure you’re connected to the Internet, and then try again."
Now if I recall correctly that both my modem and AirPort Extreme base station are about 4 years old now, and I would consider replacing them, but I have heard rumors that Apple is having problems on the Server end for delivering updates.
    Advice?

Mine is doing the same thing. Also having issues with it connecting to my time capsule correctly. I have tried running disk utilities and also restarting the computer and zapping the p-RAM. If I can't get updates how will I be able to download the Lion update that fixes the bug?? Ugh.
