W2k12 Hyper V - Rebuilding VMs and Cluster

Hi,
I am a fairly experienced admin, have done a good bit of work with Hyper-V (and XenServer and VMWare), and currently have an unusual (at least for me) project/situation to deal with.
The client is running two older, but beefy HP servers, and a decent HP SAN with them. The servers are on 2012 R2. The former admin has installed Hyper-V and five virtual machines, but here's the clincher: He also set up SQl and various applications natively
on the Host OS, across both servers. Then he put the entire assembly (DCs, the native SQL instances, Exchange, Apps, shared storage) into a failover cluster.
Unless I'm very much mistaken, this configuration is neither recommended nor supported by MS (or any admins I've talked to). Apart from that, there are significant actual performance and connectivity issues (DCOM, RPC errors) to contend with. It's my job
to to fix this.
I would normally like to start over on a couple of fresh servers, but that's not possible for various reasons. The idea now is to:
Take one of the servers out of the cluster, wipe it clean, reinstall the OS w. Hyper-V,
Build new VMs for the various roles required (DC, SQL, Apps, etc.).
Join VMs to the existing domain, migrate SQL and other app data, and go live with the new server.
Bring down and wipe/rebuild the other server.
Create a new failover cluster with both servers.
I should mention that I will also be adding a third small server to act only as DC for the physical hosts. Right now, they are on the same domain as the VMs, with one of the VMs acting as DC. Not sure what the guy was thinking...? anyway, the hosts will
be on their own domain moving forward.
If anyone can offer insights and opinions on this situation, and whether this rough plan seems viable, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks in advance,
Oliver W.

Your overall approach is sound. Not sure why you're bothered that the management operating systems are on the same domain as everyone else, though. Most non-hosting environments do that. Configuring a separate domain with trusts is not likely to ever reward
you for your efforts. Your time would be better spent just coming up with a method to ensure that the domain doesn't rely on the cluster to be functional. You could use that small physical system as a DC in the existing domain or use non-highly-available DC
VMs on internal storage, or both.

  • Changing Hyper-V host and cluster virtual IP addresses to new subnet/VLAN

I have a 2 node Hyper-V 2012 R2 failover cluster, managed by System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2, and I would like to change the IP addresses of the hosts and the cluster, in order to move them to a new subnet and VLAN. The existing and new subnets
are able to route to each other so all hosts will still be able to communicate throughout the parts of the process where they may be on separate subnets. There is also a dedicated cluster heartbeat network on its own subnet and VLAN that I am not altering
    in any way.
The 2 hosts are configured with 4 nics in a team, with dedicated virtual interfaces for each of the following:
    -Live Migration
    -Cluster Heartbeating
-Host management/general traffic (the cluster virtual IP address is also on the same subnet as these interfaces).
It is the host management/general traffic addresses that I want to change. The interfaces were created and configured with the Add-VMNetworkAdapter, New-NetIPAddres and Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan commands.
Please advise if the following process is correct:
    1) Evacuate all the VMs from the first host to be changed and put it in maintenance mode.
    2) Use Set-VMNetworkAdapter to change the name of the interface (the current name refers to the VLAN it's on)
    3) Use Set-NetIPAddress to change the IP address and gateway of the interface as appropriate
    4) Use Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan to set the VLAN ID
    5) Take the host out of maintenance mode and move all VMs off the other host
    6) Repeat above steps on the other host
I know that I will then need to change the cluster virtual IP address, but I have no idea how to do this or where to look for that setting. Please advise!
    Cheers.

The ideia is to have a HA solution, live migration, etc, storing the .VHDs onm a SMB 3 share
    \\fileserver\shareforVHDs
It is possible? How Cluster will understand the

Or i´ll have to "re-think" and forget about VHDs on SMb 3 Share and deploy using iSCSI?

You can do what you want to do just fine. Hyper-V / Windows Server 2012 R2 can use SMB 3.0 share instead of a block storage (iSCSI/FC/etc). See:
    Deploy Hyper-V over SMB
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134187.aspx
There would be no shared disk and no CSV just SMB 3.0 folder both hypervisor hosts would have access to. Much simplier to use. See:
Hyper-V recommends SMB or CSV ?
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d6e06d59-bef3-42ba-82f1-5043713b5552/hyperv-recommends-smb-or-csv-
You'll have however a limited solution as your single physical server being a file server would be a single point of failure.
You can use Storage Spaces just fine but you cannot use Clustered Storage Spaces as in this case you'll have to take away your SAS spindles from your R720 box and mount them into SAS JBOD (make sure it's certified). So you get rid of an active components
(CPU, RAM) and keep more robust all-passive SAS JBOD as your physical shared storage. Better then a single Windows-running server but for a true fault tolerance you'll have to have 3 SAS JBODs. Not exactly cheap :) See:

Alternative way would be using Virtual SAN similar to VMware VSAN in this case you can get rid of a physical shared storage @ all and use cheap high capacity SATA spindles (and SATA SSDs!) instead of an expensive SAS.
    Hope this helped :)
StarWind VSAN [Virtual SAN] clusters Hyper-V without SAS, Fibre Channel, SMB 3.0 or iSCSI, uses Ethernet to mirror internally mounted SATA disks between hosts.

  • Change Hyper-V 2012 R2 failover cluster management subnet

    Hi,
We have an existing Hyper-V 2012 R2 Failover cluster.  Virtual machines are live on this cluster.  The networking team has decided to reorganise the network subnets.  As a consequence we need to change the management IPs of our Hyper-V failover
    clusters.
    What are the possibilities?
Evect 1 node from the cluster, set correct management IP on the evicted cluster. Create a single-node cluster.  Mask a new LUN to the single-host cluster.  Execute a shared nothing live migration of the VMs which are hosted on old cluster.

  • Exporting snapshotted VMs and dynamic memory

We have a production VM which uses dynamic memory. Unfortunately, someone decided to snapshot this machine and now we cannot export the VM using the hyper-v "Export" facility.
Export gives a warning message indicating that VMs and snapshots cannot be imported into Server 2008R2 and that dynamic memory must be turned off prior to exporting. Here's the message:
I can turn off dynamic memory in the main VM but each snapshot has its own setting for dynamic memory. I can see the setting, dynamic memory is on but it is grayed out.
As a backup, I want to export the VM prior to merging the snapshots. How can I do this?
    Thanks,
    Alan
    [email protected]
    Alan MacKenzie [email protected]

Yes, you cannot import to Server 2008 R2, you can only import to Server 2008 R2 SP1 or newer.
You cannot go backward in the version of the hypervisor, that is what it is warning about.  It is not a block, it is just information.  You can still Export and Import (if necessary) to a 2008 R2 SP1 or 2012 machine.
In regards to the snapshot.  That is a different issue.  Simply delete the saved state portion (the running memory part) of the snapshot.

  • Aggregates, VLAN's, Jumbo-Frames and cluster interconnect opinions

    Hi All,
I'm reviewing my options for a new cluster configuration and would like the opinions of people with more expertise than myself out there.
What I have in mind as follows:
    2 x X4170 servers with 8 x NIC's in each.
On each 4170 I was going to configure 2 aggregates with 3 nics in each aggregate as follows
    igb0 device in aggr1
    igb1 device in aggr1
    igb2 device in aggr1
igb3 stand-alone device for iSCSI network
    e1000g0 device in aggr2
    e1000g1 device in aggr2
    e1000g2 device in aggr3
e1000g3 stand-alone device of iSCSI network
Now, on top of these aggregates, I was planning on creating VLAN interfaces which will allow me to connect to our two "public" network segments and for the cluster heartbeat network.
I was then going to configure the vlan's in an IPMP group for failover. I know there are some questions around that configuration in the sense that IPMP will not detect a nic failure if a NIC goes offline in the aggregate, but I could monitor that in a different manner.
At this point, my questions are:
[1] Are vlan's, on top of aggregates, supported withing Solaris Cluster? I've not seen anything in the documentation to mention that it is, or is not for that matter. I see that vlan's are supported, inluding support for cluster interconnects over vlan's.
Now with the standalone interface I want to enable jumbo frames, but I've noticed that the igb.conf file has a global setting for all nic ports, whereas I can enable it for a single nic port in the e1000g.conf kernel driver. My questions are as follows:
[2] What is the general feeling with mixing mtu sizes on the same lan/vlan? Ive seen some comments that this is not a good idea, and some say that it doesnt cause a problem.
[3] If the underlying nic, igb0-2 (aggr1) for example, has 9k mtu enabled, I can force the mtu size (1500) for "normal" networks on the vlan interfaces pointing to my "public" network and cluster interconnect vlan. Does anyone have experience of this causing any issues?
Thanks in advance for all comments/suggestions.

For 1) the question is really "Do I need to enable Jumbo Frames if I don't want to use them (neither public nore private network)" - the answer is no.
For 2) each cluster needs to have its own seperate set of VLANs.

  • How can I get data in flat file from Pool table and cluster table ?

    Hi,
I am working in one Achiving project. My requirement is to get data into flat file from Cluster table and pool table.
Is there any tool avilable to download data into flat file from pool table and cluster table ?
if table name given in the selection screen then data will be downloaded into flat file.
    waiting for quick response.
    Best Regards,
    Bansidhar

Data cannot be retrived directly form the cluster table
as the Cluster results are stored in Cluster Key say for example PCLkey
and form that Key we need to fetch the data
these clustes are not the part of PNP or PNPCE tables

  • Charts and graph shown as --array and cluster datatype in block diagram

    Hi friends,
    I new user...
    I have a basic doubt...
In many examples the graph and charts are shown as "array data type and cluster data type "------in the block diagram panel...
Please tell me, how these data types are shown as graph and charts in the front panel window.....
    regards
    raja

These are very basic issues and it should be clear once you study the online help and examples for a while.
    Waveform Graphs
Plain waveform graphs assume equally spaced data. The x-values are implicit from x0 and dx of the x-axis. By default x0=0 and dx=1, meaning the x-values are the array indices. You can change the offset and multiplier from the properties dialog or programmatically via property nodes.
If you give a 2D array, there will be multiple graphs. Transpose if needed.
Alternatively, you can give a cluster of [x0, dx, y-array] and the x-axis will adjust accordingly.
As another alternative, you can built a waveform datatype and feed it to the graph.
You can also graph dynamic data.
    XY graphs
xy graphs are needed if the x-vlaues are not regularly spaced. They take a variety of data formats, so pick what is most approriate for the data
    A cluster of an x-array and a y-array
An array of clusters, each containing an xy pair
A complex datatype (it will graph imaginary vs. real or similar).
    Charts
Charts are different, because they maintain a data history buffer an retain a certain amount of data. Some examples of data inputs:
A single scalar: it wil be appended to the existing chart data, possibly throwing out the oldest existing point.
An array: The array data will be appended to the existing chart data.
A cluster of e.g. 5 points: The chart will have 5 dividual plots, one point gets appended to each plot.
    etc.
The express xy-graph can be configured as xy chart, etc.
Sure, it is a bit complicated at the beginning, but the complexity also gives you flexibility to do exactly what you want. Just play around with various scenarios and look at the outcome. The best way to learn!

  • Inforation on Pool tables and cluster tables required.

I want to know about the pool tables and cluster tables like how to create them and how to look the tables associated with the given tables. Like for the table BSEG we have other tables linked BSID etc. I'm new to this concept please guide me.

    <b>Pooled Table:</b>
A pooled table in R/3 has a many-to-one relationship with a table in the database (see Figures 3.1 and 3.2). For one table in the database, there are many tables in the R/3 Data Dictionary. The table in the database has a different name than the tables in the DDIC, it has a different number of fields, and the fields have different names as well. Pooled tables are an SAP proprietary construct.
When you look at a pooled table in R/3, you see a description of a table. However, in the database, it is stored along with other pooled tables in a single table called a table pool. A table pool is a database table with a special structure that enables the data of many R/3 tables to be stored within it. It can only hold pooled tables.
R/3 uses table pools to hold a large number (tens to thousands) of very small tables (about 10 to 100 rows each). Table pools reduce the amount of database resources needed when many small tables have to be open at the same time. SAP uses them for system data. You might create a table pool if you need to create hundreds of small tables that each hold only a few rows of data. To implement these small tables as pooled tables, you first create the definition of a table pool in R/3 to hold them all. When activated, an associated single table (the table pool) will be created in the database. You can then define pooled tables within R/3 and assign them all to your table pool.
Pooled tables are primarily used by SAP to hold customizing data.
    <b>Cluster Table:</b>
A cluster table is similar to a pooled table. It has a many-to-one relationship with a table in the database. Many cluster tables are stored in a single table in the database called a table cluster.
A table cluster is similar to a table pool. It holds many tables within it. The tables it holds are all cluster tables.
Like pooled tables, cluster tables are another proprietary SAP construct. They are used to hold data from a few (approximately 2 to 10) very large tables. They would be used when these tables have a part of their primary keys in common, and if the data in these tables are all accessed simultaneously.
Table clusters contain fewer tables than table pools and, unlike table pools, the primary key of each table within the table cluster begins with the same field or fields. Rows from the cluster tables are combined into a single row in the table cluster. The rows are combined based on the part of the primary key they have in common. Thus, when a row is read from any one of the tables in the cluster, all related rows in all cluster tables are also retrieved, but only a single I/O is needed.
A cluster is advantageous in the case where data is accessed from multiple tables simultaneously and those tables have at least one of their primary key fields in common. Cluster tables reduce the number of database reads and thereby improve performance.
Restrictions on Pooled and Cluster Tables
    1. Pooled and cluster tables are usually used only by SAP and not used by customers, probably because of the proprietary format of these tables within the database and because of technical restrictions placed upon their use within ABAP/4 programs. On a pooled or cluster table:
    2. Secondary indexes cannot be created.
    3. You cannot use the ABAP/4 constructs select distinct or group by.
    4.You cannot use native SQL.
5.You cannot specify field names after the order by clause. order by primary key is the only permitted variation.

  • Is there an easier way to create and cluster large numbers of references than doing it one at a time?

Hey, I have an instrument for which there are a large number of controls on a panel. I want to have the controls reflect the state of the instrument at the time the panel opens. I was planning on creating a sub-vi, then clustering a reference to each of the controls, then having the sub-vi set each value.
The question is, is there a way to highlight say... 12 controls, make a reference, and cluster them all together without the tedious process of creating 12 references, then wiring 12 of them into a cluster?
Or perhaps I should be using something other than clusters entirely?
    Thanks,
    -Josh

Writing values from control references is slow. Do not use it in high performance applications. Having said that, it sounds like you just want to do it once for initialization purposes, which is OK.
The answer is don't wire in a ton of clustered references. Just wire the a reference to the VI on which the controls live. You can get an array of references to all the front panel controls given the reference to the owning VI. You will need to "downcast" (to more specific type) for each particular data type, but that can be done inside the subVI. Note that the order of the reference array is the tabbing order of the controls on the front panel.

  • Configure the ADMIN and CLUSTER service connections to be SSL

Can you configure the ADMIN and CLUSTER service connections to be SSL
    rather than tcp?
I was wondering about the present or future ability to secure other
connection services with SSL. Can you now or are there future plans
to configure the ADMIN and CLUSTER service connections to be SSL
rather than tcp? I suppose I should add the PORTMAPPER to that list.
My primary interest is for an SSLCLUSTER service in the case where
two brokers are connected over a non-trusted network. It may
not be too difficult to secure all the services the same way, but
perhaps that is on the TODO list.
A related question is if there are plans to add SSL with client
authentication as a stronger authentication mechanism than 'simple'
username and password. I believe you could get the username from
the client certificate's DN and continue to use the same LDAP user
repository for access control. I think this is similar to the way
that BEA's Weblogic server does it.
Finally should it be possible to deploy the HTTP tunnel servlet to
a webserver (such as iPlanet Web Server) configured to do SSL with
client authentication as a work-around to get stronger authentication
with the current release of the product? Or am I perhaps missing some
obvious and important detail? :) I guess I would like to know it's been
done already or is at least possible before I try and do it myself.

    3 scenarios involving SSL are:
1: JMS client <------- SSL -------> iMQ broker
2: iMQ admin <------- SSL -------> iMQ broker
3: iMQ broker <------- SSL -------> iMQ broker (i.e clusters)
    (1) is currently supported in iMQ 2.0
    (2) and (3) is not supported in iMQ 2.0. No concrete plans yet to support
it in the near future but we'll definitely consider doing it if we
hear a lot of demand for it.
]A related question is if there are plans to add SSL with client

This is on our todo list, but due to other more pressing issues we
have not been able to address it. We will continue to keep it
on our potential list of new features.
Sorry if I sound pretty wishy-washy in my responses above, but the fact
is that the things you mentioned above had to take a backseat
to other more critical features. That and the usual time/resource
constraints caused them not to be implemented.

Yes, this should be possible (although I don't believe we've tried it here).
The client authentication here is really only between the JMS client and the
web server (not between the tunnel servlet and the iMQ broker) and should
be similar in setup to any other java application talking to iPlanet Web
    Server.
