Waiting in vain. . .

So, I waited for the new iPhone, and now it looks like I have to wait another month or get a new blackberry now. Images of Steve Jobs saying, "And the iPhone 3g is available today", causing that midnight frenzy to buy iPhones with 3g right after the developers conference is fading fast. July 11th seems almost a month away from the publicity we've waited for.
And no normal iphones on the shelf while the Sprint people are giving the hard sell for an RIM phone right now, essentially free, just sign up for another year.
Anyone feel like they're waiting in vain for some love here? We've waited faithfully and our cups are still empty.
might be another year before I can switch to At&t. . . for I'm not a child, I don't wait for Christmas.
Any marketing person would tell you, instant gratification is better than pomp and circumstance that people walk away from empty handed.
-elfin

Currently do EVERYTHING on the blackberry, lots of email, lots of painful web browsing. . . google apps a plenty for it.
It was a bit choice for my company to let the Sprint contract lapse "in case' we wanted iphones. . . but now with everyone chatting it up. . . Sprint pushing for a decision and it just feels rather far away.
dunno. . . When the normal lines of mac products come out, I guess we're spoiled, I'm used to hearing, "available today".
It's sad really.

  • Excel 2007 and Smartview 11.1 file open slow

We are in the process of upgrading to HFM system 11.1 and smartview 11.1.1.3 and as part of this process we are starting to use Excel 2007. I am encountering an interesting problem when opening files in Excel 2007 using smartview 11.1 and I am wondering if any one else has seen this problem and found a solution.
First I converted an excel 2003 file to excel 2007 and saved the file as an xlsx file type. Then I am able to open the file and it would take about 30 seconds to open the file. The file has about 15,000 formulas on for spreadsheets. If I click on each spreadsheet individually and use the "Refersh" button I can save the file in about 10 seconds and then close the file. When I open the file again it will open in 30 seconds. Now using the same file I click "Refresh All" and the file processes fine. I am able to save and close the file in about 10 seconds. However, when I try to open the file again it takes about 20 minutes to open, and then 20 minutes to close.
This only happens with two or three files. I have another file that is 40 spreadsheets and about 3,000 formulas that is not affected when I click Refresh or Refresh All.
    Any help would be apperciated.

    Hi
On metalink i found some notes about this issure
    "Background
SmartView communicates over HTTP using .NET. This just means that requests and responses are sent in a standard XML format that is tucked in the HTTP headers. The mechanism is the same as when your internet browser requests a file or submits a form (simplification). A standard Microsoft component that is part of Internet Explorer is used for this.
There are three components (four if you include the network) in a SmartView refresh:
    -the client
    -the web server
    -the HFM application server
It is easiest to troubleshoot when they are on separate machines. (Running SmartView on the server to see whether it works better is a useful test to see what effect the network is having, but doesn't show any other bottlenecks.) If you run Task Manager on these 3 machines showing the Performance tab, you will see initial activity on the client as Excel clears the cells and the request is converted into XML. Then you see the web server get busy as it receives and parses the request. Then the application server is busy as it send the data, then the web server is busy as it compiles the results into XML again, and finally the client parses the XML, pushes the data into cells and runs an Excel calculation. This last stage is the longest of all. Overall, it is typical to see the client doing 90-95% of the work, so client performance is a very important factor. Look out for Excel's memory usage increasing and RAM becoming in short supply. Often, user dissatisfaction with refresh times can be alleviated by giving them more RAM or a faster PC.
The situation we are dealing with here, however, is when the chain of events described above is interrupted. In this case, you will see the client or the web server wait in vain for a response from the next machine in the chain. The case of invalid XML is similar, but the response is truncated so that the XML is not well-formed when it arrives. XML consists of matching pairs of tags and is not well-formed when a closing tag is missing. This can be caused by certain network settings such as packet size (see later). The end result in either case is the same: as Excel cleared the cells before sending the request, cells are left blank or with zeroes.
Your job now is to work out why the particular component is failing.
    Client
Check the HTTP time out in the registry:
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings]\
    "ReceiveTimeout"=dword:00dbba00
    "KeepAliveTimeout"=dword:002BF20
    "ServerInfoTimeout"=dword:002BF20
The time-out limit is five minutes for versions 4.0 and 4.01 and is 60 minutes for versions 5.x and 6. Also, the time-out limit is 30 seconds for Windows Internet Explorer 7. To change the settings, add the above keys. The above values are hexadecimal, not decimal and correspond to 18000 milliseconds (3 minutes) and 240 minutes for the receive time-out. See
    - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/813827
    - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181050
Once you make those changes, my recommendation is that you reboot the client machine.
    Web server
Look for errors in logs showing that the web app didn't respond/disconnected or timed out waiting for another application (i.e. the HFM application server). Eliminate load balancers etc. during testing in order to isolate the problem and to ensure that the user always goes to the same web server otherwise, logs can be hard to interpret. See also the IIS Tuning Guide for IIS settings. We cannot recommend particular settings, as each client must establish the optimal settings for their own environment after performance testing. If necessary, engage the services of a suitably qualified consultant.
    Application Server
HFM application server performance is very dependent on whether the data is already in RAM or not. One symptom, where the first refresh fails but the second one succeeds, is probably a sign that the cache needed to be populated and once that had been done (by the first refresh) it went faster. HFM loads whole subcubes (Scenario, Year, Value and Entity) into cache, so asking for lots of accounts in the same subcube is fast, but asking for lots of entities will inevitably slow things down as it runs out of RAM and starts unloading subcubes to make room for more. The HFM event log (HsvEventLog.log) shows this happening, but don't forget that the messages you see are a normal consequence of the way HFM works and are not a problem unless you see a hugely elevated number of them during the period the refresh occurs. Another sign would be page file thrashing.
If there are several servers in a cluster, use sticky sessions in HFM to make sure tests always go the same server, or hit one server directly rather than using the cluster.
Solutions here involve giving more RAM to the server (probably not possible because of the 2 GB limit) and changing the worksheet design to restrict the number of subcubes accessed. A separate consolidation server, so that reads are not competing with intensive consolidations and calculations, would be a good thing.
    Network
To find out if packets get fragmented, use
    ping -l size -f
to send a big packet with the 'don't fragment' flag. E.g.
    Ping -l 1024 -f oracle.com
If you see a reply like Reply from 141.146.8.66: bytes=1024 time=200ms TTL=245 then the size you specified is below the packet limit of the network. But if you use, for example, 2000 in place of 1024, you get Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set, then you know you have exceeded the limit. Combine this investigation with a Fiddler trace (https://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler2/) to see what size data messages are being sent and received.
    Troubleshooting Guidance
If you seriously want to go into this in more detail, then it will take a considerable effort on your and your IT Department's part. My general advice would be:
    1. During this process, fix your environment so that it is predictable. Register a single HFM application server and connect to that. Use a single web server and don't go through Apache or any other redirector. Make sure we know which machine to go to for logs. This would be a temporary measure and it doesn't stop the other users using the full, load balanced system so long as it doesn't involve your server.
    2. As far as possible keep other users from using it during testing, unless you are specifically testing for performance under load. We want to see what activity is due to SmartView and not random other jobs.
    3. Use PerfMon on all three machines: client, web server and application server.
    4. Clear Logs before testing and note the times of each test so the logs can be correlated.
    5. Log CPU activity, memory usage, network throughput, page faults, thread count etc. I'm no expert on this so get advice from someone who is.
    6. In addition to the performance logs, from the IIS Server get:
    * HTTP.SYS Error Log - %windir%\System32\LogFiles\HTTPERR (Default location; configurable)
    * IIS Website Log - %windir%\System32\LogFiles\W3SVC# (Default location; configurable)
    * Event Log (both System and Application) in EVT and TXT (tab separated) formats
    7. From HFM Application server get:
    * HsvEventLog.log (in <HFM install>\Server working Folder)
    * Event Log (both System and Application) in EVT and TXT (tab separated) formats
    8. Be aware of all timeout settings in your environment (i.e. IIS & the network) and time your tests. This can show whether it is an ASP timeout, script timeout, client side timeout or whatever. Note that the Web Session Timeout setting for SmartView in HFM's Server and Web Configuration is a separate issue from IIS timeouts. Web Session Timeout controls the length of idle time before SmartView makes the user log in again. Default 20 mins.
    9. Run Fiddler traces to directly observe the XML and check for HTTP failures.

  • Audio dropouts since updating to iTunes 8

Had a stable working iTunes to Airport Express to stereo connection going for at least two years until I installed iTunes version 8 shortly after it came out. When I updated to version 8 I started receiving an error message and I had to upgrade the firmware on the AX to fix that. Ever since that time I haven't been able to use iTunes for more than 30 minutes or so without audio dropouts. Nothing else in the environment changed.
I have tried these fixes (some suggested in other posts) and they all failed:
    1) Switched from optical to standard RCA cables between the AX and stereo.
    2) Used Airport Admin Utility to enable Interference Robustness. This made the problem worse.
    3) Switching to multiple speakers.
    4) Leaving the Airport Utility program OPEN.
    5) Removing interference from 2.4Ghz phones
    My set up:
Windows XP Pro on 2 Gb RAM
    iTunes 8.0.2.20
    AX 6.3
I live in the country 200 yards away from the nearest neighbor.
I was hoping that Apple would come out with a fix. Am I waiting in vain?

  • New Marvell (beta) Controller Driver is Released - but not for MSI?

I've been following the Marvell controller situation pretty closely the past week or so because of the BSOD it's been causing on my board.
ASUS has just posted a new Marvell driver for the 91XX, which is on the XPower (88SE9128) and I assume many other X-58 boards.
My question is, does Marvell release one driver that's compatible with all the X-58 boards? Or do they make one for each manufacturer?
I'm very anxious to try it, see if it helps with the BSOD. Should I wait until MSI posts it on their download page, or am I waiting in vain because maybe they never post Beta releases?
    Thank you guys!

Thanks Clay - I never did install the MSU software. I was using the most current driver on MSI's site - the 1.0.0.1047 WHQL.
I've asked around about station-drivers and some say they're fine, others say basically what you did, "be careful."
They've had the 1.2.00.1002 on their site for awhile, and now I see ASUS has it on their site for their X-58 boards. It's listed as a "Beta."
Not sure if I'll even bother with it. I rolled back to the msahci and I'm getting the performance I was was getting originally. I think it was only the last official driver - the 1047 - that caused all (or most) of the problems for me.

  • Will Aperture EVER support my camera's RAW?

I own a Leica D-Lux 2 (same as the Panasonic LX1 with a different exterior) and am crushed that 10.4.4 didn't bring support for its RAW files. I wrote feedback to Apple the day after Aperture was released requesting support but they didn't listen to me!
The worst part is not knowing if I'm waiting in vain—if Apple will never support my camera, I'd abandon Aperture now. Arrrrggghhhh....

Also the missing support for DNG - which like PDF
will become the standard - is a great disappointment.
I feel Adobe has put much more work, effort and
thought into their new "beta" product. I will go for
this, seems much safer in the long run.
DNG is supported in Apple's products and Adobe's products but only if the particular camera's RAW file is supported. In other words, If Adobe doesn't support your particular camera's RAW file, then you can't convert it to a DNG. If Apple doesn't' support you particular camera's RAW file, then you can't use the converted file.
But why convert your file into a DNG if your computer supports a particular cameras RAW file?
The short answer to that question is for long term storage and future file access. If your cameras manufacturer drops support for older cameras (as Canon and Contax have done), will you be able to access that file, say 20 years from now? DNG is one answer to that question. For other information on the subject you can visit this website - http://www.openraw.org/
DNG is file format created by Adobe to help standardize the output of cameras. What this means is that Adobe is trying to get all the camera manufactures to agree to build into their cameras output support for a standardized file format. Just as a camera can convert it's RAW information into JPEG or TIFF files, Adobe would like them to convert the RAW information into a DNG file.
Every time a new parameter is added to your camera's sensor or a manufacturer adds a new sensor, the parameters for the RAW file change and software vendors (Apple, Adobe, etc.) need to update their products in order to support the changed RAW file. As you can imagine this is a real drain on resources and takes time. Just imagine trying to keep up with all the different cameras on the market, this has got to be a real nightmare!
So, if you want DNG support, the best thing to do is to contact the manufacturer of your favorite camera gear and ask them to add DNG output to the list of file formats that their cameras can output. Make sure that you let them know that you, as working professional who actually creates and owns the file/image, find it very unprofessional, unethical and not at all conducive to a professional business that they would actually create a proprietary file that was inaccessible to you and those that you license the file/image to.
If you want to help speed up the process of having Apple add a particular cameras RAW file to it's list of files that it can read, let the manufacturer of your favorite camera gear know that you would like them to allow Apple access to the proprietary (i.e. secret) information that enables Apple to build real support for their cameras into it's products.

  • Captivate Scorm 1.2 with Moodle and max. apptempts

    Dear all,
I am the person who pushed Captivate in our company and now everyone is looking at me because its not doing as we are used by Articulate.
    The setting:
Moodle allows three tries to see if someone passed or failed a lesson.
After the third try the user can redo the course in Articulate, but all questions are greyed and no new try is reported back to Moodle.
That way the user stays always with three tries and is displayed as in review mode in Moodle.
    My problem:
Captivate is set to 3 tries and reports back to Moodle.
In Moodle the user has three tries and after these three tries the user is shown passed or failed.
If the user starts the test a forth time (Moodle shows review mode) captivate will 'crash'.
If started a fifth time, captivate will work and report back.
So if you try it a fifth time and pass, Moodle shows passed.
Where is my logical error. What setting did I set wrong?
Can Captivate not do the same as Articulate?
Can Captivate receive a variable to disable the questions (Could be done via Widget)?
    Any ideas?
    Best TD

You mention that you have the quiz inside Captivate set to three tries as well as Moodle giving the user three tries.  I make that a total possible 9 attempts at the same quiz.  If the idea is to only give the person three opportunities to pass a test then you should set Captivate to only one attempt each time launched and let Moodle handle the number of attempts.  Or give Captivate 3 attempts and 1 in Moodle.  Either way, the limit should be three, if that's what you're after.
However, that won't change the bigger issue that Captivate is crashing for some reason and Moodle doesn't prevent a fourth or fifth scoring attempt.  It appears to me like when Captivate crashes, it's because something has happened in Moodle, because theoretically Moodle shouldn't be allowing any fourth or fifth scoring attempt.  So I wouldn't immediately be blaming Captivate for the issue here.
By definition, a SCORM doesn't actually know how many times it gets loaded because it doesn't store any data after the session is closed. The SCORM standard states that the SCO should not require anything outside itself to function. It's the LMS's job to record data about the user interaction with the SCORM.  So if the LMS (Moodle in your case) allows the user to open the same SCORM after they've exceeded the maximum permissible number of attempts, then the LMS is supposed to disable further scoring capability somehow, either by only allowing the course to open in Review Mode (which allows the user to do the quiz but not get any credit for it recorded) or by not allowing the user to open the course modules at all, usually giving them a message that says so.
I think your problem is somewhere in Moodle, not Captivate, and you may need to find out why Moodle is still recording scoring attempts AFTER the maximum number permitted.  This sounds like a Moodle bug to me and it might also explain why Captivate is crashing.  (If by crashing you mean that the Captivate lesson seems to go unresponsive, this is most likely because it's SCORM API is waiting in vain for the proper response to come back from Moodle.)
I'm not familiar with how Articulate interacts with LMSs, so I'll have to take your word for the fact that it can read the fact that the LMS has exceeded permissible attempts and disable the quiz components.  That sounds like quite a cool feature, but Captivate doesn't have it (that I'm aware of).  I know of no widget that will do it for you either, though in theory it could be developed.

  • Dreamweaver CS3 Crashes At Startup

I installed the CS3 web premium suite and all the programs
worked great, including Dreamweaver. After rebooting the PC the
next morning, Dreamweaver CS3 would not launch anymore. I
reinstalled DW but still the same problem. Startup gets as far as
reading the site cache and then totally disappears. I've tried
renaming/deleting the Configuration and the registry key
    (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Dreamweaver 9), and the DW8 site
caches. The other CS3 programs work fine.
    What now?

I can open Dreamweaver now but I don't think the problem is
    solved. Here's what happened:
I took the steps in the article you referenced and some
others, re-started the pc repeatedly with all start-up programs
disabled, and waited in vain for the promised return phone call
from a seemingly diligent guy in Tech Support. When I called Tech
Support the next day, they said that the case number and customer
ID had no reference to this problem so someone would call back. OK,
    fine. I'll wait.
I did a "clean update" of ZoneAlarm, remembering that this
had solved some other problems in the past. Later yesterday, I was
cleaning up some experimental website file directories and renamed
a few of them to make more sense of what they were.
When I tried to re-open Dreamweaver later, it paused to tell
me that it could not find the directory for the site referenced in
the site definition and I should go to Manage Sites to fix it.
Since Dreamweaver had crashed repeatedly before reaching this
stage, this was a major victory. The site it was trying to open was
one that I had set up to experiment with some of the new features
in DW CS3 after the initial installation. Fortunately, it was one
that I had renamed earlier yesterday.
The offending directory contained a page with some of the new
Spry widgets (Tabbed Panel and Accordian) and a short slideshow
that I think I made using Bridge.
So, I was able to open the Manage Sites panel and point
Dreamweaver to another site definition. It opened fine and everyone
    lived happily ever after.
Unfortunately, the problem is not solved -- just worked
    around by coincidence.
Here is some info from the Windows Control Panel's Event
Viewer about the last time that DW crashed: Faulting application
    dreamweaver.exe, version 9.0.0.3481, faulting module msvcr80.dll,
    version 8.0.50727.163, fault address 0x000142f1.
Hope ths helps Adobe figure out what is causing this crash.
Now that I can open Dreamweaver CS3 and use it, I'm really
    impressed with the upgrade.

  • How to post the question in asktom

    Hi,
Could you please some give isteps to posting questions for ask.tom .I tried in his site ,but i didn't find the post thread/question kind of options.

And besides waiting in vain for days, staring at the "Sorry I have a large backlog right now, please ask a question later"-message and getting more and more depressed (just kidding ;) ), you could always ask your question here on this forum.
    If you do that:
Provide details about DB-version, make a small but representative example, use the tags.
(that way you have practised on how to ask questions to Tom when you get your chance ;))
And usually by doing some searches on here and AskTom there's great chance you'll find your answer(s) without having to ask anyone.

  • In What Order Do I Download iWork '09 Updates ?

Hello. I recently bought and installed iWork '09 (alas, after waiting in vain for iWork '11), and found several updates for the program.
The updates to iWork '09 are versions 9.0.1, 9.0.3 and 9.0.5.
    Here is the link:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=supportsite.home.search&locale=enUS&q=iWork%20%2709%20update
Is it recommended I just download the latest version (9.0.5), or shall I get them all in order, first to last?
    Thanks, just wondering...

When the original version is installed, trigger the menu item :
    Apple Menu > Software Update
It will scan the installed apps and will tell you which updates are required for Apple products.
For Java, it may urge you to apply an updater (say #2) then when this one will be applied it will urge you to apply an other updater (say #5) because the updater #5 doesn't install what is installed by the updater #2.
For iWork, only the late version (9.0.5) is displayed.
Is it necessary to add that it's the only required one ?
No need to ask in a so called genius bar, to phone to Apple or even ask on a forum.
The required info is directly available in front of us.
But I guess that our dear peter will write that it's a too deeply buried feature

  • Flex 2-14 issues

    Dear Users,
I strongly advise you not to consider buying the Lenovo model Flex 2-14 or any Lenovo machines at all.
I bought one recently and the screen has yellow spots in the corners and on the sides from day 1. Also the laptop rattles thanks to its flexibility I guess. The annoying rattling noise just drives one crazy.
I thought these problems will dissapear, but I waited in vain, they are just getting worse. Well, I am covered by warranty, so I thought no problem, even though I am out of the US where I purchased it online. But calling the customer service and struggling to get the right person, who eventually refuses to fulfill the Lenovo warranty obligations on the basis of the fact the receipent's first name is different from mine (though we do have the same family name, as we are family). Then after some time, the person agrees to consider the possibility of repair. And now they ask million questions and put different conditions to delay the return for repair, and just to make us so sick and tired of them, that we don't want to call them anymore, especially given that we don't have time to waste on the telephone. So the Customer service does everything just to avoid accepting for repair the defective laptop they sold us. I am deeply dissatisfied with the quality of Lenovo products and with the attitude of their staff.

  • Battery life after updating to 6.1.2

Whats going on with 6.1.2 update!!! My 4s was updated yesterday and the battery drains so fast, fully charged my phone twice today and its already dying now and it's getting hot too without realy using it.
Before updating it used to last me a day with normal usage.
    Any ideas?

I updated my iOs to 6.1.2 last week and three days ago, I began to notice that the battery depletes VERY fast.
I woke up at 7am to find my battery fully charged & unplugged it. Slept for 3 more hours and found my battery at 47%. This never happened on my phone with previous updates and even on my iPhone 4s.
I already tried several suggested fixes written on the discussions and it won't seem to work. I "erase my iPhone", did a hard reset, removed my sim and it all don't fix it. Almost tried to illegally downgrade my iOs but I decided not to. Guess I'd just better wait in vain for Apple to fix it themselves with a more credible andreliable iOs update.
    Anyone having the same problem?

  • "Unexpected File Format" Save corruption

I was working on a project and hit save when Flash freezes and I receive an error message saying "Adobe Flash CS5 has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." - with an option for "Close program"
I waited, in vain, to see if Flash would resume running but unfortunately it left me with the only option of hitting close program. I hit close program, and Flash disappears. When I tried to open the file I was working on I get the error message "Unexpected File Format"
The save file is now corrupted. Since I am new to flash (student at university), and unaware of how notoriously unstable it's save files could be, I did not think to save a secondary backup file and just save on a regular basis instead.
Here's the details of my computer:
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    Intel i7 950 @ 3.07 Ghz
    6GB Ram
    Flash CS5 version 11.0.0.485
I have tried every potential fix I have found to no success. If I am unable to recover this file there is a very high likelihood I will be unable to finish my assignment in time, I will fail the course and will have to repeat the entire year.
Is there anything I can do to recover this file?

After looking over the file some more it seems as though I must have lost everything. Comparing similar files I've been working with, their sizes are around 5-7MB, the corrupted file is only 4kb suggesting everything is gone.

A BT speedtester would show that my profile is 1500, I would accept that given the fact that I have re-connected frequently in the past couple of days, but I'm worried that it won't go up like it normally does because real speed measured (1355, see below) is way below even the profile (1500) let alone the DSL rate (2104 !!! my BThub3 reports 2056! how could that be?).
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1355 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 800-2000 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2104 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 708 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 1500 Kbps
So, I'm concerned that I will wait in vain for 10 days only to come to the conclusion that there is something wrong with the exchange given the huge FEC count. And then wait for another few days until the whole BT support machinery kicks in and send an engineer to look at it.

    Adrian
PS. I'm not a novice on that, I know about connecting to the main socket and cables inside the house, interference...

Thanks imjolly, regarding the 2056 vs. 2104 I should have picked up the 1024/1000 :-)
I don't remember older BT hubs to report in Mbps. That would also explain why sometimes I see odd rates (literally).
    > your profile is correct for your connection speed of 2104
OK, only I used to get DSL rates closer to 3000 before my current set of problems (when I was also upgraded to HH3).
Do you think it is possible that the new modem would connect to a lower DSL rate because it now peeps into my IP profile and thinks "well, no point going higher than 2000 since his profile is 1500". If the answer is "no", then I'm worried about the DSL rates I'm getting lately.
    > and throughput is lower than profile which is normal
You would say that, but I have seen throughputs higher than the profile when the line was clear and the profile was down because of provoked frequent re-connections.
    > FEC errors are interleaving
OK, I understand now the relationship between those, I have seen reports on this forum of millions per day, still I'm getting hundred of millions...
    > unless you start having disconnections then it's not a problem
Well I've just been disconnected after more than one day, with no apparent reason (perhaps the fridge comming on, but it must have come on many times during that day of continuous connection...)
So, I'm more and more convinced that something is wrong in the exchange.

    Adrian

  • Zen V Plus -- Blank Screen

Old lady in her 70's needs help!? My Zen V Plus MP3 Player has been losing the light on its screen, and it is now totally blank. Tried to reboot as per instructions - difficult when you cannot read any text - and now the machine will not turn off. Because I cannot see anything I am left with a totally blank screen but the radio is going loud and strong.
Creative suggested a firmware reload. Waited in vain for more than an hour and a half for it to finalise, and gave up. May get an ipod instead!!
Thanks - any help to the old lady appreciated.

What happened to the player now? Is it completely dead after trying to reload the firmware?
