Want to move LR5 catalog to an external HDD and incorporate my Aperture3 files already stored on another external HDD.

With the demise of Aperture, and lack of space on my mac, I would like to consolidate all my LR5 and Aperture images onto ONE external HDD.
My Aperture originals are already on one external HDD, and my LR5 images currently occupy (too much) of my hard drive on my MB air.
Is there an uncomplicated way to join the two sets on another new external HDD?
Thanks

what I meant is that I would like to access my Aperture images via LR5, so have just the one LR5 catalog for all my images.
This is a goal that I would recommend!
However, I can't really state if that's what you need to do with your photos in Aperture, as I have never used Aperture. I'm sure someone else who does use Aperture will be along soon to comment, or you can try your favorite search engine.

  • I use lightroom 5. Have always used the general automatic backup. I want to backup my catalog to an external backup drive.  I go to file,, then export catalog and I get message that about 900 pictures will be exported. I have about 38000 pictures with key

I am out of space on my desktop. I want to export my catalog to an external drive and then work off that external drive which has more storage. I have about 38000 pix, which have keywords etc that I want to be part of this export so I can work on groups of pictures, when necessary.
When I go to files, export catalog I get a message that about 1000 pics will be in the catalog to be exported. How might I get all the pics with keywords metadata and other vital info exported?

With due respect, you appear to have a fundamental lack of knowledge on how LR works.  The "pic" files are not in the catalogs.  They are separate.
The catalog has NOTHING in it but the adjustments you've made.  There are no "pics" in it at all.  The 38,000 photos exist separately.  So Exporting your catalog to another drive will do nothing to fix the crowded "desktop".  It only would move the list of adjustment to another location.
The reason that it Exports a catalog with only 1000 "pics" is because that is what you have somehow selected.  If you want to export a catalog for all the "pics", select all of them.  But, that won't make room on your "desktop".  You need to move the "pics".
To make room on your "desktop", you need to move the "pic" files themselves, not the catalog.  To do that may require an understanding of computer file structure.  In terms of how Lightroom ties your adjustments (recorded in the catalogs) you will have to use Lightroom itself to move the files.  You do that within the Library module and, to do it right, will require an understanding of operating system standard file structures.
To keep the adjustments (recorded in the catalogs) connected with the "pics" you need to plug in the external HDD, and WITHIN LIGHTROOM, create a files structure on the external HDD you are happy with.  Then, you can copy, cut and past or drag and drop from you "desktop" to the new file structure.  If you do it within LR, your adjustments will remain intact.
It may be tempting to use your operating system programs, like Windows Explorer or the Mac equivalent to move the files, but that will fix the "desktop" space problem but you will loose all of you keywords, adjustments or whatever.
It is probably rude and impolite, but it amazes me that people trust their cherished photography to a program such as Lightroom without ever doing the homework to understand the underlying principles of operation.
Good luck!  This can be terribly confusing.

  • I bought a license for Lr a few years back and installed it on a mac laptop.  I want to move that license to my new iMac and remove it from my old laptop. How?  Thanks!!!

I bought a license for Lr a few years back and installed it on a mac laptop.  I want to move that license to my new iMac and remove it from my old laptop. How?
I downloaded Lr on the new iMac but there does not seem to be a way of "registering" the software to give it functionality.
    Thanks!!!

    Your Lightroom License key is,
    1. Cross platform Mac and or Win.
    2. It is a single user / owner.
    3. You can have two installations active with one in use at any point in time.
    4. There is no deactivate process like other Photoshop products.
    5. You can uninstall / install as many times as you need as long as you keep the spirit of the license.
    6. The license key is specific to the Lightroom version, i.e License key for LR 4 will not work for LR 5.
    7. You can upgrade i.e. purchase from any version of Lightroom 1,2,3,4 to the latest LR 5.

  • How to move LR catalog from one external hard drive to another

I'm having issues with the external hard drive that my LR5 catalog resides on, and I would like to move it to a new external hard drive.  I'm a little nervous to do this for fear of disrupting my catalog.  Can anyone give me the steps to do this safely?

You can move your catalog file using your operating system. Double-click on the file to open it.

  • I want to move all my email data over the past several years from one yahoo account to another. I am told that I can use Thunderbird to copy and paste . How?

I wish to close down one email account but have no time to indivuidaully send emails out piecemeal to my newly set-up email address/account.
I want to keep the same InBox and Sent data columns as I have always had with dates associated with each email.
I was told that setting up Thunderbird to deal with emailing can facilitate this copying and pasting between two accounts.
Once done I wish to close my first email account ( its unfortuneately contractually linked to my old iphone 4 and I have changed cell phone companies so I am still keeping that account alive while I sort out how to move my data out into my new email account) and stick to using the new account.
Both are yahoo.co.jp email accounts. Yes, I live in Japan.
The Thunderbird program seems to have accessed and stored all of my email data . It did so quickly.
Please advise what to do next.
    Thanks

    How do I do this?
He will run into a problem when he wants to use his own account.  Some apps will have been purchased on one Apple ID and other apps will have been purchased on a different Apple ID.  That's a nuisance situation when the apps need updating and, unfortunately, there is no resolution at the present time (IDs can not be combined).

  • Want to move my library to an external HDD

    Hello all,
Due to space constraints I need to move my iTunes library to a new HDD. What is the "proper" way to do that without losing any settings or data ?
    Thanks !

    Connect your ext disk
In iTunes Preferences point the location where to store file to that external disk
Now "Consolidate Library" and get a coffee or two - all files will be copied to that ext disk
If everything went fine - check that twice - purge those files on your int disk

  • I want to move photos from my laptop to desktop and merge catalogs

I have Photoshop Elements 5 on my desktop with about 15,000 photos.  Prior to a big trip I bought a laptop and loaded Elements 9 on it. I took about 5,000 pictures on the trip and organized them.  Now I'm back and I want everything from my laptop on my desktop, including my copy of Elements 9.
I can probably figure out how to get Elements 9 from my laptop to desktop, however I searched the forums and it appears you can't merge catalogs.
Can anyone recommend the best way to handle my situation?
    What I'm thinking...
Upgrade my desktop from Elements 5 to Elements 9.
Make sure my old Elements 5 catalog on my desktop is converted and functioning in Elements 9.
Copy all my files from the Laptop to the Desktop
    Import all my files
    Done.
The only problem is I will lose all the organization I did on my laptop!  I don't want that.
    Thanks!

I think its the best solution to write tags and all in photographs.... and get them back on import...
Here is one article about the simple case of migrating from one machine to other..: http://photoshopelementsbyadobe.blogspot.com/2010/06/how-to-transfer-your.html
There is no easy solution to catalog merging and one needs to look for solutions as suggested in last reply

  • How to move a catalog to an external hard drive?

My local hard drive was full. So I moved all my photos to my external hard drive but not the Lightroom catalog. LT refuses to work with a catalog located on a network.
I'm running Lightroom 2.7 on Windows Vista.
    Any help  would be appreciated.

I was hoping for a better solution but obviously I will have to wait until Adobe provides a more professional and advanced version of this great software.
You do realize that every bit of  "professional" software out there has problems with one sort of network filesystem access or another? Every single protocol out there that provides networked disk access, from the oldest, hoariest SMB to the brand-new custom SAN will affect some applications at least some of the time.
Most of these protocols are optimized for certain file IO activities, and there is no such thing as a free lunch. When piggybacking file access over another protocol, you are going to run into bottlenecks.
My advice: go eSATA or firewire, which are optimized enough and general-purpose. SANs are too special purpose. The SAN that is great for backing (say) Oracle may be absolutely terrible for other access.

  • HT202213 I want to move my iTunes account on my macbook and my wife's iTunes accounts(PC) onto a network hard drive and share the music files, can anyone help?

    help

Changing the setting as to where to store media will indeed put the media files (but not the rest of the iTunes library files) on the external drive as long as the user also selects to organize the media to the NAS.  If you don't do that, iTunes will only store new media there from that time on.
I would not recommend keeping only media on the NAS.  As I said, NAS can have issues with iTunes and some of the longest topics I have seen here are how to rebuild a library after for some reason the library file on the Mac computer has lost the link information to the media files stored on a NAS.  Some things such as date added, play count, and ratings are only stored in the library file and may be lost if you have to rebuild your library file.
I guess for me the only iTunes reason for having a NAS would be to do direct sharing of the library rather than having to use Home Sharing.  Direct sharing of the library intact requires placing all the iTunes files on the NAS. If you're going to do Home Sharing you might as well opt for a a cheaper, more stable, plain external hard drive.

  • My hard drive is ready to die and i want to load my itunes to an external hard drive and then loan them back to my new computer. Will my ipod classic sync up to the new computer?

my hard drive is ready to die and want to move my itunes to an external hard then back to a new computer, will i have a problem syncing my ipod up to the new computer and in the process loosing all my music?

To be honest your post is rambling and difficult to read due to the lack of proper punctuation I only read it part way however...
The first thing to do is a proper backup. Your system has Time Machine built into it, here is the Time Machine Tutorial. Look that over, get yourself an external HD to use as a TM drive and backup properly! This will backup all of OS X however it will NOT backup MS Windows!
If you think your HD is failing then run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode and if it reports errors you can post them here.

  • Want to move 10.000 linked files to another HD!???

    Hi,
i want to move my photos from an external HD to the internal imac HD. The photos are linked to the iPhoto library. After a simple drag an drop iPhoto is not able to find the Original file. Only one after another, and this is a boring job for 10.000 files =(
Is there any way or tool to change the HD?
    Thank You for Help,
    Thomas

By "linked" I guess you mean Referenced - that is the file were imported without copying to the iPhoto Library, right?
When you do this iPhoto creates an alias to the location of the Original File. However, while an alas will track a file as it moves around a volume, once you have the file and the library on separate volumes you are asking for trouble. Aliases will not survive moving across volumes.
It's the main reason I would never recommend using iPhoto in Referenced Mode. Apps like Aperture have commands to re-attach and move referenced files. They are also more expensive.
You can try use an app like [FileBuddy|http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy> to resolve the aliases. If that fails then I'm afraid doing each one individually is the only way...
