How to move a catalog to an external hard drive?

My local hard drive was full. So I moved all my photos to my external hard drive but not the Lightroom catalog. LT refuses to work with a catalog located on a network.
I'm running Lightroom 2.7 on Windows Vista.
Any help  would be appreciated.

I was hoping for a better solution but obviously I will have to wait until Adobe provides a more professional and advanced version of this great software.
You do realize that every bit of  "professional" software out there has problems with one sort of network filesystem access or another? Every single protocol out there that provides networked disk access, from the oldest, hoariest SMB to the brand-new custom SAN will affect some applications at least some of the time.
Most of these protocols are optimized for certain file IO activities, and there is no such thing as a free lunch. When piggybacking file access over another protocol, you are going to run into bottlenecks.
My advice: go eSATA or firewire, which are optimized enough and general-purpose. SANs are too special purpose. The SAN that is great for backing (say) Oracle may be absolutely terrible for other access.

  • How to move from a "recovered data external hard drive" to the new Computer?

Computer 1's hard drive crash and all programs and data were recovered professionally and sent to me on an External Hard Drive.  Computer 1 was on Windows 7.  I can fun the program off of the External Hard drive fine, when connected to my my new Computer.  I click on the .exe file and it pulls up the catalogue as it should.  All off of the recovery drive.
The new Computer, is on Windows 8.1.  How do I get the Adobe Catalogues moved/copied to the new Computer?
I redownload Adobe 10 onto my new 8.1 Computer from the Adobe website.  Using the new download, I was able to open the Catalogue on the External Drive (F).  Cannot find a way to "relocate" the Catalogue to the new computer.  The pictures have already been copied to the new computer.
Please help!!!!!   Desperate not to lose the organization (tagging/dating) etc in 30,000 pictures+.
    Kay

Before we can give a solution, we need more information and we must be clear about the details of the recovery.
From your post, I assume that the external drive contains a copy of your picture files, with probably exactly the same folder path. I think that that path is identical in Win7 and Win8 (it was not in XP).
You have reinstalled Photoshop Elements 10 in your new computer.
So the main point is : what about your old catalogs ? It's quite possible that the professional recovery has also made a copy of those.
You'll have to search the external drive for one or several folders containing a 'catalog.pse10db' file.
If you find one or several, select the newest in date (or the biggest), the folder containing it is the catalog you are looking for.
If you don't find one, be sure that the explorer is set to show hidden files. Without catalogs, you can't restore your organization
Now, when you have found the catalog (the folder), you can do this test. With PSE and Organizer closed, double click on the 'catalog.pse10db' file. That should open the organizer with the catalog. Since the files are not in the same location as before, all links in the catalog will be wrong : different drive identification and perhaps different folder structure. That test should show you the thumbnails (the catalog cache in the folder should have been recovered; if not it's not that important, the thumbnails cache will be recreated automatically).
Now, how to 'reconnect' all files, that depends on what you want to do: keep them in the external drive or copy them back to the main internal drive. The problem will be either to update the catalog database to point to the new location or to recreate the same drive identification as before : letter and drive serial number, exactly same folder tree. We can discuss those options when you have made the first test.
If that goes well, don't worry about the location of the catalog : you can move it either from the catalog manager or manually.

  • How to move all of itunes onto external hard drive?

Right now, I have my music library connected to iTunes on an external hard drive. iTunes is installed on my desktop computer. What I'd like to do is have iTunes wholly on my external hard drive so I could move it back and forth between a laptop and my desktop. I edit a lot of tracks and to make sure the edits carry over, I'd just like it all on the external hard drive instead of downloading iTunes onto both devices. Also I add and delete different playlists with regularity.
Plus my iTunes runs sluggish (freezes for several seconds every time I click on something) and after a google search, one reason might be because my massive music collection is on a different drive, so I'm curious if keeping it all on the external would help.
I've searched around on how to do this, but all I find is how to move my library onto the external (its already there). I'm using Windows 7.

See Make a split library portable.
The larger the library and the more playlists you have the longer it takes to process each change in the database.

  • My Mac is telling me that my disk is full. I have bought an external hard drive and have just listened to a youtube tutorial on how to move iTunes library to the external hard drive. If I do this can I still load new media on my Mac without the external?

my Mac is telling me that my disk is full. I have bought an external hard drive and watched a youtube tutorial on moving iTunes library to external hard drive. Will I still be able to use iTunes on my Mac for new media or will this now only work through my external hard drive?

To do this you need to learn the details of how iTunes works.  For example, you just said, "leave my iTunes on my computer".  iTunes is the application itself so of course it has to be on your computer.  That said, I therefore don't know what you mean when you say leave iTunes on your computer.  The phrasing of your question suggests to me, if I may be frank, you don't understand how iTunes works fully and we can't just give you a "do this" answer and have it work out.  It would be too easy to make a mess of things.

Yes, you can download media and delete it again (but if it is from the iTunes Store there is the possibility you can't always download it again).  Of course if you want to keep a copy you can archive it.  I have done that with some files for which I have no room on my computer.  I transfer them to an external hard drive and delete the reference to the file (but not the file itself) from my library.  If I want a quick listen I go to the file on the drive and use Quicktime player or something else non-iTunes so I don't have to have it added to iTunes and delete again.  I don't know if that is the solution you are looking for.  I could leave the reference in iTunes but if the file can't be located by iTunes it will tell me there is a broken link = !  I guess I could live with that except I periodically scan my library for broken links and don't want it getting confused with ones I have done deliberately and ones suggesting I am really missing a file somewhere.
Another possibility is to make a second iTunes library for material you are archiving and only use that library when the computer is using the external drive.  There are tricky aspects to dong that but it is a possibility too.
The simple solution for most people with computers with tiny drives (as most seem to be these days) is to put their whole iTunes library on an external drive and use it from there.

  • How to move iTunes and Library to External Hard Drive

Is it possible to move the program and its contents to an external hard drive? The external can hold much more and it would be easier to bog down my external hard drive every so often than try to keep iTunes and its contents on my Mac.

    Yes providing you use
    Consolidating Your iTunes library
and allow iTunes to Manage your music.
Once you are positive that the External is working to your Satisfaction you can Delete your iTunes Library off your computer.
Leaving the iTunes Application / Program installed on your computer...
To Operate iTunes from the External Drive...
Start iTunes with the Option key held down and Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external drive.
On Windows, hold Shift, launch iTunes and select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the external drive.

Is there any solution (other than buying
I really think 'buying' is the best solution on this one.  Ideally, you would have at least five internal hard drives.
    System
    Projects
    Cache/Scratch
    Media
    Exports
Use externals and network drive only for backup.

  • How do i reset a movement of files to an external hard drive

    Hi Everybody,
Iam in BIG trouble ! ! ! .After getting dialogue a box on my PC stating that the hard drive was almost full ( 106.9 of it's 107Gb memory is being used) i went out and purchased a 640Gb ext. hard drive which i was assured was a "plug and play" device.
I wired in the ext HD and proceeded to "send to " the "itunes" folder to it without any problem. It took almost 50 mins to transfer all 70Gb of video and music to the ext. HD. Afterwards when i clicked on the "itunes " icon i got a dialogue box stating the files had been moved or deleted ...in other words it appears i moved not only the contents of itunes but the program aswell.I restored the PC to an earlier date but still had to "uninstall and re-install"( i was prompted by the PC to do this ) itunes to get it to do ANYTHING.
When i plugged my ipod back in to the computer itunes told me that " this i-pod is synced to another library".
I decided to transfer the contents of my ipod to the pc but very little of the music was transferred and none of the video !!!!
    So now i have ....
    1. Purchases in itunes that won't download because the hard disk is full .
    2. An ipod that will not correctly sync with itunes on my PC
So where are all my files ???? the hard drive no longer shows an "itunes folder" but is still full ! ! When i "search" for "video" i can find all the videos in documents and settings but if i try to delete them i get a dialogue box stating "CANNOT DELETED--ACCESS IS DENIED ....MAKE SURE DISK IS NOT FULL OR WRITE PROTECTED AND THAT THE FILE IS NOT IN USE"
I can "open with" the video file and the PC switches on itunes and plays the video...but if i delete the video from the itunes library (to make some room on the PC's hard drive ) it is deleted from itunes library but stays on the PC's hard drive.
HELP PLEASE  !  ! WHAT HAVE I DONE AND HOW CAN I UNDO IT ???

Use your operating system to move the photos to the external hard drive, keeping the same folder hierarchy; then in Lightroom relink via http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm
Do not take this as an opportunity to rearrange or reorganize your folders or photos.

1GB? It's a miracle your Mac is running at all!
This is our resident iPhoto guru, Terence Devlin's, advice:
You can move your iPhoto Library to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How do I move iTunes library to an external hard drive to use less space?

How do I move iTunes library to an external hard drive to use less space?

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

So your MacBook Pro is a 2012 model (I'm assuming since you only bought it a week ago!)?
There are some known issues with the USB 3.0 ports on the 2012 models where they do not recognize USB external drives. This tech note may be of some help - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172#12.
Some people that are using pre-release versions of Mountain Lion, to be released in the next couple of weeks, have written here that their USB 3.0 port problems are 'fixed' with the new version of OS X 10.8.
Try the Apple FAQ first and if that doesn't solve your problem, you may have to wait a couple of weeks to see if 10.8 does.

  • I need to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp what disk do i use and how do i move certain files from an external hard drive

I want to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp.  I need to know what disk to use and also how i take certain files off my external hard drive and put on my computer.  When I was having problems with my airport they did a clean install and they pulled files of my time machine.   however they forgot to put the partition back in for a windows side.  Originally I had Parellels on my computer.  After my external hard drive got corrupted i called apple and they fixed the problem but didn't have me set up the time machine except for the external hard drive.  Now my only back up is from the external not from the laptop.    I am not sure how to do any of this.  I am not computer savvy...PLEASE I NEED  HELP>

First, you need to make a backup of your MBP onto your external drive. I suggest you start by cloning your MBP drive to the external drive:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
This clone is fully bootable and also contains a clone of your Recovery HD.
Second, you need to do a clean install of OS X onto your MBP as follows:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should accomplish your goals. You will have a clean install of OS X on your MBP and a bootable clone of your old system and all your files on the external drive.
