Was It Really That Easy?

I've had quite a few Macs over the years, but my new 20" iMac 2.4 arrived Friday. Setup and transfer from the old G5 went great, but the machine started making a high pitched buzz the next day. When the screen dimmed automatically after it sat for a while it seemed to go away. During use it was back and I could get rid of it by turning the screen brightness down. I read a few scary stories on the boards here and decided to call Apple and get a case going.
The young lady had me do normal maintenance that I should have done first. The PMU reset and then a Pram reset. It quieted down and I'm typing away without a sound. I tried putting a bit of a load on the processor by opening a bunch of programs, but that made no difference and for this hour, at least, the whine/hum/buzz has not returned. Was it really that easy?
Could one of you more technical guys/gals tell me how a video/fan problem is solved by this simple procedure? Thanks.

OK, nearly 12 hours later I'm back at home and realize that the reset maxed the screen brightness. In toning it down a couple of notches the buzz/whine starts up again as loud as ever. This time, turning the brightness down starts it and turning it up to full quiets the noise. The opposite of before. Running the full Hardware Test shows nothing.
Time to call again, I guess.

I have my landline diverting to my iPhone. However, it does not distinguish whether the call has come from my diverted landline number. My old Nokia many years ago used to show an arrow symbol when it was a call thats source was diverted. I really need to know when a call has come from my landline so I can greet the caller in the appropriate way and also so I can be sufficiently short as I am getting charged for the call from my BT landline to my mobile.

That is not a feature that's available on the iPhone. Sorry.

  • Is the Mac OS really this easy to crack?

My wife, a therapist, has been required to use computer equipment and file encription that is HIPAA compliant for medical privacy issues. She was told by her trainers that the mac had little to no security and was easily cracked. I was surprised and I told her the mac was pretty secure. I googled teh issue.
It would seem, from the following link, that I may have been very wrong. Is it really this easy to get into a stolen mac? Can the system password be so easily circumvented? If this is true, even I, who know next to nothing about computer programming, could hack a mac and get to all the data.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOq3aiRb57Y

This is not specific to the Mac. Any time a hacker has physical access to any computer - Mac, Windows, Linux, whatever - data can be accessed almost trivially.
The only exception to this is data that is properly encrypted. Such data cannot be accessed by a hacker, provided that the encryption is strong, and that the password is strong and not stored somewhere that the hacker can access. On a Mac, you can accomplish this with FileVault, as Bob mentions. Automatic login must be disabled, and the user password must be strong. This will keep an attacker out of your data... unless they can get you to subvert your own system by installing malware, but that's very rare on the Mac.

  • [SOLVED] RAID1 for Storage Drives: Is it really this easy...

I currently have a simple file server set up that uses the nVidia controller (NVRAID) on the MoBo to control the RAID1 arrays for the storage drives.  Currently I'm using all four of the NVRAID controller sata ports yet I find myself needing to expand a bit and that has led me to search for a different solution.  I've been looking at documentation for mdadm and it seems so simple, since the OS is on it's own non-RAID drive, that I am concerned I'm missing something.  Assuming each disk will only have a single partition would it really be as easy as making my backups, disabling the NVRAID controller and following the simple commands below to have a functioning RAID1 setup ready to load with data?  Also will this work the same on a PCI or PCI-E SATA Port adapter card?
    Set the partition type with
    # fdisk /dev/sd?
    # fdisk /dev/sd?
Just to be safe make sure there is no existing superblock
    # mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sd? /dev/sd?
    Create a RAID1 array
    # mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sd?1 /dev/sd?1
    Format /dev/md0 as ntfs:
    # mkfs.ntfs /dev/md0
    Mount the Array
    # mkdir /myfoldername
    # mount /dev/md0 /myfoldername
Then I just make sure to update fstab and mdadm.conf files to make sure the arrays are auto-mounted.
    Thanks

Although, why do you want to use NTFS?
Excellent thanks, it just seemed so easy I was sure I must be missing something.  Most of the information I found was about creating an array to install the OS files to so it was a bit confusing at first.  Aaaand, I don't want to use NTFS at all but I haven't convinced the wife to give up 'doze yet so I have to keep these files accessible for her PC.
fukawi2 wrote:And don't forget that you are recreating the array, so you will loose all the data currently on the drives! (You seem to already know this since you're running mkfs but for the benefit of anyone who finds this in the future with the same question )
Yep, but I appreciate the reminder.  In addition to adding more HDD's I'm also migrating to larger drives so I can afford to start from scratch, and I intend to make backup images before doing anything anyway.  They've saved my bacon more than once so I always make sure they're up to date.

As long as the kernel has drivers for the card, then it doesn't matter to mdadm. The kernel should just present the drive as a block device in /dev/
AND, don't forget to 'modprobe raid1' before you start to load the kernel module for RAID.
Good to know since this thing will eventually store data for personal use, my wife's photography business and the movie files for HTPC box (once I build it) it's going to have a lot of HDDs with everything being mirrored.
Okay that modprobe one made me look.  Basically that just loads the Raid modules for a kernel when the system is prexisting and already running to avert needing to reboot to load them... right?
Thanks for the help it really is greatly appreciated.

  • Can't contact Adobe... Are they really that unprofessional?

I'm a Camtesia Studio User and I am looking at
converting over to Captivate. The software continually crashes on
me. It is a trial version that I have just downloaded. I understand
that things like this happen and I am not so upset about that. I am
however rather frustrated that I cannot seem to even send Adobe an
email about how to fix the problem.
    Here is the problem...
The software crashes sometimes upon opening a new project.
The software crashes everytime upon ending a recording. In my
search I found another person with the same problem. One user
responded with suggestions. I followed those suggestions to no
avail. I have uninstalled the software... cleaned up my system and
    reinstalled to no avail.
So I would think that my next course of action is to contact
Adobe and ask.... "How can I get your software to work?".
45 minutes of searching Adobe.com and I can't find anyway of
contacting them to ask such a basic question.
Am I missing something? Is Adobe really that
    unprofessional?

The contact method has been supplied though I agree they
    could make it
easier - one thing Adobe said they looked forward to with the
    Macromedia
integration was the community relations Macromedia brought to
    the table.
It seems that aspect of the integration hasn't been all that
    successful
    so far...
Anyway, Captivate crashes as you describe I would suspect
    being a result
of video card issues. Try adjusting the Troubleshooting
    slider (assuming
XP; Display Properties > Settings > Advanced >
    Troubleshoot). Bringing
that down a notch or many may help the stability...though may
    also
effect the quality of the captures.

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

When I used Safari to go to the American Express web site a request came up asking me to register my Amex card.  I thought this was strange so I called Amex and they saw it when they went online and they said it was my iPad that had been hacked.  Is there an app to protect my iPad when I am online with sensitive information?

I located some suggestions for flushing the cache.
There are really three ways you can flush the DNS cache on your iPad.
    1) Simply turn the iPad off and on again using the power button. A simple reboot will go a long way.
    2) Turning on Airplane mode and then turning it off again will also clear the DNS cache and should be enough to fix the problem. Tap on your Settings icon, then swipe Airplane mode to On and then back off. Since Airplane mode disables the wireless features of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to comply with airline regulations, this will generally do the trick.
The third method would reset all your network settings and I'm pretty sure you don't want to do that right now.

I'd like the Desktop machine to mirror everything on the laptop and when I travel with the laptop I add images once I return everything new will be copied over.
Things I don't want in this system
    • Third party software, If the OSX 10.4.8 can do it all the better
    • Having to Manually hit a sync button. (But willing to budge on this one)
    • It Making a duplicate copy of the folder each and everytime it connects.

  • Is the PSE12 Organizer event tab really that clueless?

In PSE12 how does one display the icons under the event tab in a categorized tree structure?
In my PSE10 catalog, I have a highly structured event tag tree for 30,000 pictures and videos covering 15 years.  This tree has annual main categories and then numerous events in 2nd level subcategories under each year.  Below that are tags for which camera/person took the picture as well as other tags for videos, panorama-segments etc.  Altogether there are probably several hundred or more subcategories.   After importing the catalog into PSE 12 all of these subcategories show up in the top level display causing massive duplication that scrolls for 12 or more screens.
The PSE12 event tab is useless if it can only display every subcategory all at once in a flattened format.  I also do not see any way to move these subcategories out of the events tag area and into the keyword tag area to help eliminate clutter.  Please help me not hate PSE12 so I can migrate off 10.

Thanks very much for the reply and yes I was aware of that on the media tab but it no longer gives you the easy right click options that the previous versions had, like for example quickly excluding a subcategory tag of a certain main category of tags.  Shouldn't the events tab allow a hierarchical view so one could drill down to the desired event subcategory?  I don't understand why you can create groups under the events tag header but then not be able to display those groups under one icon on the events tab.  Otherwise the new events tab just seems very cluttered, cumbersome to use and extremely limiting in purpose.

I have purposely been ignoring your responses to my posts about the heat issues in the newer design iMacs, but if you want really want to ague the point...
First, the iMac is marketed as a desktop model Mac. Not a laptop or MacBook.
I have never owned a MacBook, so I can't attest to how much heat the MacBooks generate.
I Have two iMac models. A 2009, 27 inch screen iMac for myself. And a 2010, 21.5 inch screen iMac for my Fiancée.
As a desktop Mac these are hottest running desktop Macs I have ever owned. Period. I owned two beige Macs, a pre-G3 tower, aG3 desktop, a G4 MDD Tower, the original iMac, eMac, iMac G4 and now my current iMacs.
None of my previous Macs have ever, EVER ran this hot. I have never, also, had any component failures in any of the previous Macs I have owned, either. All of my Macs have been upgraded or modded to some degree over the years.  About 2 years ago I had to press my old G3 back into service. Both my G3 and G4 models have been heavily modded. The G3 ran without issue for a close friend for over a year until that friend went out a got a Mac Mini.
That's a 1996-97 Mac my friend. And it still is in working order and hasn't had any failures.
The fact I am pointing out here is that heat is an enemy to electronic components.
Whether desktop iMac or MacBooks, tightly packed enclosures of heat generating computer components with fans that do not run fast enough at most times to cool off the interior or exterior, will and does slow roast computer components to premature failure.
I do not know how frequent component failure is in the MacBook line up. So I can't attest to those.
I do not participate in those forums.
This is why at some point in computer history, Super Conputers were liquid cooled. PowerMac G5 systems were liquid cooled because they ran too hot!
I have taken my own precautions to keep my iMacs' heat down as much as possible.
I don't  have the money to keep buying a new Mac every 3-5 years when some catastrophic failure happens.
I had to purchase my iMacs used as I couldn't afford the cost of a new iMac with the specs I needed.
My idea, your idea and Apple's idea of acceptable operating temps we can argue all day long.
I feel, personally, that the operating temps are too high and exacerbate operational issues.
I Have been participating in these particular iMac forums for just over a year and have seen plenty of posts of iMac component failures due to both heat and dust, dirt issues from within the iMac.
There can be no other reason for all of these failures. The SuperDrive is, usually, the first to go bad.
It's probably due more to its vertical mounting, but the excessive interior heat isn't helping it.
Next to fail is the GPU. The last to fail, but the most expensive to fix, the Logic Board.
I Have seen plenty of posts in my last year here of all of these failures in iMac less than 5 years old and ,perhaps, a little older. 2008 model iMacs seem to have their issues, too!
Apple is focusing too much on design and aesthetics, rather than longevity of their products, I feel now.
A Mac isn't going to last 7- 10 years anymore.
I don't have stats and numbers. Just common sense.
This is my story and I am sticking to it. For what it's worth.

  • Jacob- Really that's all ya got!

Jacob- We really do appreciate that you made a post, but really that's it. A lot of people here trusted BB paid money to secure a product that people from Sprint have been waiting years for, Loyal Sprint customers-that is something that is not valued obviously at BB. You can't even say we are expecting shipments this many times a week, or BB expects to have full inventory by this date. If Best Buy messed up just say so, people are very forgiving, let the people that were loyal enough to your company to place orders with BB know what the heck is going on, give the customer the choice (show BB has a sliver of ethical value) to get their phone elswhere if you can't deliver anytime soon. I have never seen a more misleading act from any Store ever. Jump in front of this issue BB, your lack of consideration for your customers is irreprehensable (sp).

Crimson you would not run a good business.
    1.  The release date was 3 days ago, the biggest electronic retail store should be on top of ordering a product.
    2.  If it was pre-ordered I should get mine when other stores customers got theirs, if they were planning to order late no sense calling it a pre-order.  It's now just an order.  A preorder would have to be "pre" Bestbuy apparently failed to understand the "pre" part sense they put the order for most sprint Iphones in after the release date.
    3.  Who are you and why do you care?  Did you order an Iphone?  Or do you think people actually care about your opinion.
If I asked you to give me $50 bucks for a reservation of an Iphone 4s, and then everyone around you got theirs but you probably wont get yours for a few more weeks because some incompetent people (like yourself) made a mistake, then the people suppose to check their mistakes made a mistake and then nobody told you there was a mistake and told you that you will get your Iphone when they have it, but wont clarify if they have even ordered it, and then they wont even help you when you go into the store and try to get your $50 dollars back and it's a struggle to get back to the way it was before best buy got in your life.
You sound like a very lazy person that doesn't care.  Apparently you are not waiting for an Iphone, so leave us alone.
