Was iWeb released too soon?

I'm wondering if iWeb was released before it was ready, as there seem to be be few very obvious bugs and major failings
For example iWeb does not use the full range of HTML character entities which causes some web servers to serve up some very strange objects on pages if you use apostrophes or similar punctuation.
For examples look here: http://tinyurl.com/9xh98
And here: http://tinyurl.com/cav2k
I've also discovered that iWeb cannot copy pages. For example you spend a fair bit of time laying out a page and getting the formatting just right, and then you discover you can't duplicate it, copy it, or do a save as. So for your next web page you have to start all over again.
Publishing with FTP is next to useless because you can't upload only the changed files. For example if I make a minor change to one page and then save the changes using publish to a folder, iWeb then re-writes almost the entire web site to your local folder. Then when I use an FTP client like Transmit to synchronize with the remote site, Transmit has to upload almost the entire site because every local file has overwritten. Not a good thing to do with a 50 or 100MB web site.
As a web publishing application, iWeb seems crude, very limited, and not ready for inclusion in a major suite of applications like iLife.

For example iWeb does not use the full range of HTML
character entities which causes some web servers to
serve up some very strange objects on pages if you
use apostrophes or similar punctuation.
For examples look here: http://tinyurl.com/9xh98

If you switch your browser to UTF-8, you will see that these pages are displayed correctly. This presumably means that the server you are using forces all browsers into Latin-1. This is wrong, web servers should let the page code (UTF-8 for all iWeb pages) determine what the browser does, and not force everyone to use ascii character entity codes for the hundred thousand characters not in Latin-1. You might want to ask the folks who run that server to change this.
You could argue that iWeb should allow users to choose their own encoding, like more sophisticated programs do, but it is a lot easier for most to not need to deal with the question.
The current apparent inability to easily make custom templates is obviously a shortcoming, but hardly a reason to delay issuing the program, at least in my view.

  • Transitioning from Homepage - iweb: spoke too soon....

I thought I had it now I have to post back with follow up questions. I didn't realize that others had bookmarked to pages within my original site. Those people are now getting 404 errors.
Anyone who types in http://homepage.mac.com/myusername is redirected correctly. Is there a way to catch others who may be trying to hit "deeper" within the orignal? Failing that is there even a way to linke the orignal "start page" that I had created so that it also forwards to my iweb site?
    Hope this makes some sense.
    Thanks,

There really isn't an easy way to redirect all the URLs from the Homepages system to your new iWeb pages. I guess, if you still had the Homepages .html files there in your iDisk/Sites/ folder, you could replace them with the redirection file (index.html) that you made and name it the same thing as whatever file you are replacing. But it sounds like you have already erased those Homepages files.
Anyways, it's probably a good thing to make a clean break. Start telling people about your iWeb URL. And get them to bookmark the short iWeb address: http://web.mac.com/username That will always lead to your default start page no matter how many times you change it in iWeb.

  • CK24 - "Release too early" message in log

    Hi, All:
I am trying to perform a mark and release for period 1 in 2009 today Dec 16. The cost estimate was done without error. Marking was allowed in CK24 as well as Release. I checked the costing 2 tab and my estimate was there as the future standard cost. Everything seems OK.
However when I check the log, it has this message:
Message number 157 - Company code then "Release too early".
Will this cause problem to my release on Jan 1, 2009.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Peter

Thanks for your quick response, Suraj and Mangalraj!
I am new to SAP and no one in the company knows the exact detail on how to perform the annual cost update. Hence I am asking for help here. I am doing a test on one item right now. I tried before this test to use CK40N to perform a cost run. It gave me incorrect costings. We looked into details and discovered that CK40N is for items with quantity structure. Because all our products are without quantity (purchase items), the system did the calculation incorrectly.
I think I need to clarify a bit more about my test. We have purchase items only hence I used KKPAN - Create cost estimate without quantity structure to enter the costs in directly. There are 3 cost elements, the purchase price, the freight and inspection overhead. The cost estimate should be done by SAP right away after the data is entered. After the data entry, I perform the CK24 to mark the item. Then I use CK24 again to release. Then I checked and saw that message.
Based on Suraju2019s comment, does that means that I have to release the costs on Jan 1, 2009 for my new standard costs to be effective? I found that to be very ineffective. Why canu2019t SAP allow me to plan ahead? I have already performed all my analysis on all the costs. I am sure they are correct. Why do I still need to perform the release on the first date of the actual period?
With regard to Mangalraju2019s comment, I can understand that if the structure is based on some future date, the system should not allow the release because there may be errors when the actual costing run is performed. However since I am not using costing run as explained above, this is not relevant to my situation.
One thing I want comments on is whether this message will stop my planned costs to become standard costs on Jan 1, 2009? This message is not an error, not even a warning. What will happen if I disregard this message? Will I have problem on Jan 1 with the system having outdated standard costs that I have been using for 2008? Please advise.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Internet Connect comes up too soon - fix?

Whenever I restart (using Airport)Internet Connect software comes on before top title bar is loaded, so sees no connection. How to stop it loading too soon. I'm not sure that is problem. I've gone into Airport top menu, open Internet connect and have checked to "remember password in keychain" and it doesn't. I also have opened Airport Utility, and manually put in settings to remember password, but nothing works. I have to keep going into that airport menu top title bar, chooose my network and enter my password.
    -How to keep password there?
-How to stop airport connect popping open before whole desktop is loaded, maybe that's problem?
    -?Any other ideas? Thanks!

BD: I went back to terminal (copy/paste your words)to not show hidden files, now all of a sudden I have several new items on my desktop, and some I'm not sure are safe to remove, as looks like items that were in finder, and now are on desktop. Do you know why, and if safe to remove the following:
Network (rt click choice to "eject" -but hope this won't messup network settings; no "move to trash" avail)
.localized (can rt click to "move to trash, but will it harm anything?)
.DS_Store ( can rt click to "move to trash, but will it harm anything?)
...and even icon showing my FileVault-ed home folder!(the only real rt-click choice for this is "force quit" and I hope it won't mess up all to do that!)
PLEASE tell me if it's safe to do what the choices are, and if you know why this happened ..ie: what part of that script I put in for: showing hidden files, then reverting to hiding hidden files, caused this to happen?
    THANKS AHEAD for HELP!

  • Ntp service depends on dns but is started too soon

Given servers defined in /etc/inet/ntp.conf, the service starts interactively (svcadm enable ntp) with an initial ntpdate call to set the clock.
However, this fails on boot up as the servers are not found unless defined in /etc/inet/hosts. As a consequence, there can be a significant initial offset from the RTC, which corrupts the clock drift value and takes hours longer to stabilise.
This implies that the ntp service is being started too soon before dns whereas it should be started after dns.

I would check to see if this is still true in the most recent releases of Solaris Express. If it is, you can log a bug about it.
For your existing machines, you could probably create a dependency on milestone/name-services for the ntp service and see if that fixes it.

  • !!Tag!!  when will iweb release this small but usefully function?

!!Tag!! when will iweb release this small but usefully function?
waiting for it since iweb 06 and now is iweb 08 but still
does anyone know what apple planning to do? or they don't even care about iweb and dotmac users?
i just know i am going for other blog service soon ><....

does anyone know what apple planning to do?
No, nobody knows what Apple's plans are for iWeb or for anything else, and Apple never talks about such things in advance. To tell Apple what kind of features you want in the next version, use the feedback item in the iWeb menu.
i just know i am going for other blog service soon
That is what you should do if you really need a feature which iWeb does not currently have. You can still link to your blog from an iWeb site. Many people require blogging features not available in iWeb, especially the ability to make entries via a web browser, and thus use blogger or other services instead.

  • ITunes v10.6.1.7 "Copying files failed. The File name was invalid or too long."

I'm trying to organize my music files using iTunes 10.6.1.7 and I keep getting the error message "Copying files failed. The File name was invalid or too long."
I've got music folders by artist in both the iTunes Music folder and the iTunes Media/Music folder. When I add certain files by drag/drop they sometimes get lost and I don't want that to happen anymore. I used to just consolidate my music files using the File/Library/Organize Library option and that worked, however now when I do that, I get the error message.
I'm a novice and the only online stuff I see is both confusing and refers to earlier versions of iTunes.
My concern is that I have heard that people lose entire libraries of their music when they trry to fix things like this and I don't want that. If this is of any importance, I have several files called iTunes library and temp library. I have no idea what that all means but I'm scared to death of it.
Also, I can't get to the "re-organize library" link at all. It won't let me.
One thing that be of some interest is that when I pull up the properties of the music and media/music files they are marked "read only" I'm also afraid to touch that!
Please help and please know that I am a dummy. Be kind and be clear. Step by step would be great, with images even better. Thanks.

You can choose to *Consolidate selected tracks* with a right-click menu. Perhaps if you can identify a specific track that won't consolidate and examine the full path to the file & the path that iTunes would create when it consolidates the problem might become apparent. For example iTunes may not be able to move files if the source or destination path length exceeds 255 characters.

  • When trying to 'Consolidate Files' via iTunes I get the message "Copying files failed. The name was invalid or too long."

I am trying to copy my entire iTunes library and everything in it from my PC Desktop to my PC Laptop using the "External Drive" method as shown on the Apple website. On Part 1 (5) I am told to consolidate files. When attempting to do this I get the message "Copying files failed. The file name was invalid or too long."
    How do I resolve this?

I have just been having this problem and it has been driving me mad.   The error message doesn't tell you which file is causing the problem so you can't fix it and it leaves your libray in a state of limbo with some files copied into the new location and some in the old location.  After many hours I found a surprisingly quick and simple solution.
    1) in iTune create a smart play list that includes everything that was added before tomorrows date.  This will include everything.
    2) Right click this playlist and export it as a text file to produce a tab delimited file.
    3) Import this into a spread sheet, or just view it in a text editor with line wrap turned off.  What you are interested in is the last column (or end of the line in a text editor).  This gives you the path of the file associated with each entry in the library.
The path of the files that have already been copied successfully will start with the new location for your media files you specified.  Scroll thru the rows until you get a blank path.  If you start getting paths starting with the old Media file location then you went to far and start scrolling back.
The row with the blank path was the file that failed.  Move back to the start of the row to find out more about it.  In my case it was a podcast with a very long name. I just deleted that podcast from iTunes.
    4) Restart the consolidation by choosing File, Library as you did before and the process starts again where it left off.
    5) If it fails again on another file just repeat the process

  • Itunes for WIN7: attempting to copy to disk "..." failed.  The file name was invalid or too long

itunes for WIN7: attempting to copy to disk "..." failed.  The file name was invalid or too long
    help!!

Max. path length is 255 characters, or perhaps there are some non-displaying characters hidden there. Try dropping a song you want to add to iTunes into the Automatically to iTunes folder to see if that works any better.

  • HT1751 Consolidating files failed.  The file name was invalid or too long.  How to trouble shoot this?

I am trying to move my iTunes library from old XP PC to Windows 7 PC, using an external hard drive.  Using tutorial and signed in as administrator.  Trying to consolidate my library and receive error message " Copying files fail. The file name was invalid or too long".    Don't know what to do as next step.   The library is sitting on the hard drive under the Administrator ID (My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music).
    Any thoughts?

You can select a group of tracks and consolidate from the right-click context menu. You coud try consolidating in batches, say all songs by artists beginning with A, then B, etc, then the other media types, until you can isolate a problem track and then try moving that by hand and fixing the broken link.
I also have two scripts that could help you, Unconsolidated and ConsolidateByMoving. The first can make a playlist of all unconsolidated tracks, the second can consolidate a selection of tracks by moving them instead of copying.

  • Copying music failed. The file name was invalid or too long.

I went to consolidate my music, but when it got about 2/3 of the way through, it stopped with the error message, "Copying music failed. The file name was invalid or too long." I don't know which file it is referring to. How do I find this out?
I needed to cosolidate so I could backup the entire library to DVD. Now I'm left with two partially complete libraries with many duplicates.

To find out which file it was, look at where you were
copying them too and see which was the last file
copied - and then go back to your source, and go to
the next one - it should be that one.
I just wanted to add that I had the same issue (failure to finish copying and "invalid or too long" error msg) and at first didn't see how looking for the last file copied would work since iTunes is copying into folders.
    Duh.
Reverse sort by date modified (newest folder at the top of the list) then drill down to the folder containing the files being copied. Voila. There was the (missing) culprit, and I knew which file to rename in the source folder.
Thanks for the kick in the brain pan.

  • HT1751 I did all of the above and at the "Consolidate files" screen I clicked "ok" then it sayd "copying files failed. the file name was invalid or too long" and I had to click "OK"  I cannot consolidate the files to transport  to my external harddrive -h

I would like to backup my itunes to my external hard drive
I did all the steps up to "organize Liberary" which at this point I checked the box and the clicked"ok"
it then said "copying files failed.  The file name was invalid or too long" "OK"
It will  not let me consolidate the files so I can transfer to my external hard drive
what am I doing wrong - any suggestions?
    thanks,

Are you using consolidate files to bring in stray files to your main iTunes Media folder before backing up, or to copy the media folder to the external drive as part of backing up? If it is the latter then you are taking the wrong approach. See this user tip.
Run my script Unconsolidated on the library. It will show you the remaining unconsolidated files which might give a clue as to which files iTunes is having a problem with. You can consolidate selected files in batches (select, right-click) as opposed to trying to do everything in one go. Alternatively you could try moving the remaining unconsolidated files with ConsolidateByMoving as long as this step is a precursor to a backup..

I am using itunes 10 and trying to consolidate my files.  I keep getting the error "Copying files failed.  The file name was invalid or too long".  How can I indentify what file is causing this problem or resolve this issue?

    BUMP
Yes, I just get that message. I don't see how I could investigate this problem.
I didn't mention that this happened when I was consolidating my library, not copying files to another computer.
In other words, I'm using a "normal" itunes procedure, itunes won't complete it, and won't tell me exactly why or how to figure out how to fix it...
Is there at least some easy way to tell which files were successfully copied to my itunes music folder so I can work on moving the uncopied files?
    Can anybody help me?
