WAS on Linux seens to be slow

After having installed WAS for linux, things seemed to work OK.
It seemed however that database-generated pages were very slow.
To find out what was wrong we mixed platforms:
Database on sun, WAS on sun
Database on linux, WAS on sun
Database on sun, WAS on linux
Database on linux, WAS on linux
Database on linux, WAS on WinNT
Database on WinNT, WAS on WinNT
etc..
Every combination performed well, except when WAS was running on
Linux. Dispite the fact that the performance for WAS on Linux was
bad, the Linux wasn't doing really much: no heavy CPU usage, or
much I/O.
Any idea's about what's wrong?

  • WAS on Linux

    has anyone installed a WAS server on LINUX. If yes what version/make of linux.
    I am trying to install the free WAS on linux software distributed by SAP and I am facing problems with linux version
    I like to use WAS for web hosting and developing application. Since SAP is releasing WAS software for free of cost, i am thinking it can save license cost.
    Any comments on this thought.
    So if someone has installed this setup, please provide me some details

    It is free only for evaluation not for commercial use. You need to renew license key every 90 days.

  • ITunes media on Linux server via SMB - slow imports, changes and stalls

    I have an unRAID server (lime-technology.com) which is a Linux based server. I'm getting terrible performance with iTunes. The music playback is fine. But if I import a song file or change any metadata, it has problems. This isn't new, I've read many, many posts complaining about this and other problems concerning SMB shares and file systems. But I think I may be onto something and would like some advice.
    This is what I've found so far. Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.x, has a problem with SMB and/or any file system other than HFS+. HFS+ is the common files system for OS X.
    There are hundreds of posts on the web complaining about temporary freezes, slowdowns, sometimes crashes with SMB shares and other file systems. I have yet to see Apple acknowledge that there is a problem, but there are a few suggestions out there that seem to have helped people. I'll be trying out some of these this week and post the results here.
    From my own observations, specifically with iTunes, I've noticed some strange behavior. Here's my setup. I have an iMac running 10.6.4 (the latest update), the latest iTunes 10. The iTunes app is located on the local internal HD, I have my iTunes library files and all my media on disk 1 of my unRAID server. I'm hard wired to the server via a gigabit router. I have iTunes set to keep the media organized and copy the media files to the server.
    When importing a song file into iTunes, the file initially seems to copy at a good rate, the file appears in it's proper place and you can see the size increasing as it copies. Then it stalls for a while, then the name changes to a long hex number for a few seconds and then reverts back to its' normal state. The process can take 30-40 seconds, even with a small song file. I looked at the console and I got the following error message:
    Quote
    +11/8/10 12:24:28 AM /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820] Possible unresolved transaction race -103/(Master Music Library/John Lennon/Rock 'N' Roll,(null))+
    The same thing happens when I make a change in the metadata. For example, I added onto the name of an album and for each song it changed I got:
    Quote
    +11/8/10 12:37:36 AM /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820] Possible unresolved transaction race -103/(Master Music Library/John Lennon/Signature Box Set 5 - Walls And Bridges,(null))+
    This happens for each file imported or changed even within iTunes.
    I followed the first path in the error message: /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820].
    In the /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/ folder I find the following files:
    iTunes
    libgnsdk_musicid.1.7.1.dylib
    libgnsdk_sdkmanager.1.7.1.dylib
    libgnsdk_submit.1.7.1.dylib
    where iTunes is a Unix Executable File.
    I did some more research and have found some posts about file systems other than HFS+ having trouble with app packages. I believe that all OS X apps are actually packages, like folders, but appearing as a single file. Other file systems don't seem to know what to do with these. There was some talk of "flattening" these app packages, but I haven't gone forward with that yet because I'm not sure I understand it enough yet.
    I've also noticed that in the getinfo box under sharing & permissions I usually get "You can read and write", but with apps I get "You have custom access". This was something i had noticed before and thought it was a problem on the server, but I didn't realize it until now, I'm getting the custom access on every app. So I think that's probably normal.
    I'm wondering if I'm having a permissions problem with the iTunes Unix Executable File. Right now the permissions are set as follows:
    system: Read & Write
    admin: Read & Write
    everyone: Read only
    Maybe it's trying to write to that file or another one and doesn't have the right permissions since the song file is now on the server and that's causing the stalls? I'm over my head here. Anyone have any ideas?

    I have the same problem with Excel files on an external drive. The drive is attached to my computer which is on a network and another user accesses the external drive. The problem of "custom access" began after our main server went down. I hope someone can come up with a solution so that I can set the permissions. For now the Excel files are all read only.

  • Printing from Acrobat Reader Linux is many time slower than from Windows Reader

    The users are complaining to me that same file is printing one page every couple minute under Linux, while under Windows pages from the same file print one after another very quickly.
    Hardware is not affecting that as they are using dual-boot Fedora 14 and XP on the same machines, printing to the same HP LaserJet printer over JetDirect.

    Also, I am noticing that scrolling page thumbnails and flipping pages is many times slower under Linux than under Windows on the same machine, but CPU utilization is very low.
    Can one of the Linux Acrobat developers look into performance issues please?

  • Flash CS4 was running fine now running really slow

    I have had Flash cs4 for the mac for several months now and the first project I started was running fine with no sluggishness, I was using it for basic animaton so it was never asking too much. the file size was about 150 mb towards the end which was fine until all of a sudden it just crashed after asking it to do something simple and it started running slowly since, I'd barely made any changes but after the 'crash' selecting anything on the stage or moving anything would have about a 1 second delay which is frustrating! it runs smoothly on start up for several minutes then will just start running slowly again. I have since started a new project which has the exact same problem and is only 18mb in size! my mac book pro is barely a year old and has plenty of memory etc. I know that many people have reported sluggishness but this was running fine until something 'unknown' happened.
    Can anyone help?

    Thanks for your help, I did try hiding the larger layers but the rest are really simple and hiding all layers except the one I was working on made no difference.

  • Linux on RS480M2-IL = SLOW!!!

    Hi,
    Is there anyone run a hard disk performance test  in Linux x64?
    I'm using 64 bit Fedora Core 4 and the hardware configuration are
    AMD Athlon 64bit 3000+ CPU
    4x1GB CORSAIR DDR 400 RAM
    200GB Maxtor Diamond Max 10 Hard Disk
    Using tiobench 0.3.3 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/tiobench/)
    I got this result
    Write = 10.138 MB/s
    Random Write = 3.060 MB/s
    Read = 554.977 MB/s
    Random Read = 455.818 MB/s
    Using ASUS A8N-E board with same configuration
    Write = 40.086 MB/s
    Random Write = 5.936 MB/s
    Read = 1254.666 MB/s
    Random Read = 1020.575 MB/s
    Can you believe this kind of speed?
    Could someone post their benchmark test here as well?
    Thanks,
    Louis

    Those read speeds are b.s for sure
    Since the boards have differant chipsets it is likely that the OS simply doesn't support the ATi chipset yet.
    You can make sure you ahve the latest kernal, maybe it has been added to it by now.
    ATi seems to only offer video drivers for linux, not chipset.

  • Partitioning Hard Drive (was "Installing Linux OS")

    Dear all,
    I would like to install Linux Debian on my five-year old iBook G4 in order to use it side-by-side Leopard (currently running on my iBook). I wonder if you can tell me how I could resize and partition my hard drive. I put a similar query on this forum under "Installing Linux OS":
    here's the link: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2495649&tstart=0
    And someone gave me directions as to how I could partition the hard drive. I followed the directions but only in the last step my computer seems to be stuck. I followed these steps without any problems:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed. (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    When I got to step number 4 a strange thing is happening. Here's step 4:
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
    For some reason my Leopard is not following through with this last step: I added a new partition in the gray space. I gave it a name but could not format it anything other than Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I then clicked the Apply button. And I waited for the process to complete. But now after 10 hours, I am wondering that maybe something is not right. I wonder if there's another way for me to do the 4th step: such as using another software besides the Disk Utility.
    Any help would be most appreciated. And I really need your help! So please take a minute to write me an answer. Please!
    Appreciatively,
    Ron

    thanks a lot, when I put on the new hard drive can I
    put on the tab on the old one and put it on the new
    hard drive so when I want to take it out I can?
    because should I want to sell the laptop one day i
    would want to put on the original parts.

  • Dbmgui access for SAP WAS on Linux TestDrive (2004s)

    I'm having trouble connecting to MaxDB from either dbmcli or dbmgui. To be precise, I can use dbmcli, but only with reference to XUSER.62, e.g. "dbmcli -U c -d N4S db_connect" works, but none of the other default passwords work any of the standard users I listed with "xuser list", eg. connect,connect; superdba,admin or sapn4s,sap.
    Thus I can't logon via dbmgui (using a VM), only via dbmcli with reference to xuser.62.  (other user password combinations such as dbm/dbm also don't work)
    I tried following note OSS note 39439 which suggested directly adjusting the password in XUSER.62, but when I changed password for user "control", I could no longer use  "dbmcli -U c -d N4S db_connect"  nor could I start the database (because of authorisation failure). Had to restore /home/n4sadm from backup!
    Should I try user_put to change the password first? This note 39439 seems to say I will have the same logon failure unless I adjust XUSER.62, so very confused and nervous about relying on backups.
    Thanks
    Phil

    Hello Phil,
    1) You wrote "I listed with "xuser list", eg. connect,connect; superdba,admin or sapn4s,sap." Could you please post the output of the "xuser list" command.
    And you also wrote: ""dbmcli -U c -d N4S db_connect" works" => Please check what username is listed with Key c fter you run "xuser list".
    Are you able to run the following commands:
    dbmcli -U w -d N4S db_connect
    dbmcli -U c -d N4S db_state
    dbmcli -U c -d N4S -USQL w sql_execute select * from users
    2) Please check if you could connect to the database as superdba user:
    dbmcli -d N4S -u superdba,admin
    <enter>
    Dbmcli on N4S>sql_connect superdba,dmin
    <database need to be online, please check it before to run 'sql_connect' >
    Dbmcli on N4S>sql_execute select * from users
    < I would like to see the list of users in database >
    Dbmcli on N4S>exit
    Also please update with output of the following commands:
    dbmcli -U c -d N4S user_getall
    dbmcli -U c -d N4S user_get control
    dbmcli -U c -d N4S user_get superdba
    dbmcli -U c -d N4S user_get connect
    3) You already know about the SAP note 39439. Please also see the SAP
    Note 25591 to find the answer on the question:
    How to change the DBM, SYSDBA and DBA user passwords in the database?
    But you need to find what is the name of the DBM user in your database. Connect? Or control?
    Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina

  • Java 5 is VERY slow on Linux Fedora core3

    Why Java is 10-15 times slower on Fedora Linux, in comparising to Windows XP?
    I have two identical PC (dual Pentuim3 1Gh, 1.5Gig memory).
    Java version - JDK 1.5.0_03
    For testing, I run simple java program:
    /// Start LoadTest.Java
    import java.util.*;
    public class LoadTest {
    public static void main(String[] args)
    Date startDate = new Date();
    int repeat = 1000;
    HashMap map = new HashMap();
    for(int i=0; i<repeat; i++) {
    //System.out.println(i);
    ArrayList list = new ArrayList();
    long lval = (new Date()).getTime() / startDate.getTime() + ((new Date()).getTime() * startDate.getTime()) - startDate.getTime();
    String sval = Long.toString(lval);
    Long LValue = Long.valueOf( sval ).longValue();
    map.put(LValue, sval);
    String keyset = map.keySet().toString();
    list.add(0,keyset);
    list.addAll(map.values());
    for (Iterator iter = map.keySet().iterator(); iter.hasNext(); ) {
    Long lv = (Long) iter.next();
    String sv = (String) map.get(lv);
    list.add(sv);
    keyset = map.keySet().toString();
    list.add(0,keyset);
    Date endDate = new Date();
    String message = " LoadTest: " + repeat + " repetitions. Total Time: " + (endDate.getTime() - startDate.getTime());
    System.out.println(message);
    /// End LoadTest.Java
    It takes 300ms to run it on Windows and 3900ms - on Linux
    Can somebody help me?
    Shall I consider to use Windows on the web-server?
    Thanks.

    I know, it's just dirty, ugly test, but WHY WinXP handles it better?
    Actually, I did this best after I get som test results for my application.
    I't uses JBoss4.1/Tomcat5 on JDK 1.5_03. I used JMeter to test it and get some strange results - to test throughput rate on plain JSP pages, like login page (without any EJB) , Linux performs 10 times slower (for 100 requests, 24/min on Linux and 240/min on Windows). To test EJB, which retrieving datasets from database, the difference is about 3 times. Linux - FedoraCore 3 (2.6.11)
    That's why I started testing Java itself. BTW, if make this test a little "pretty" - no memory allocations in loop, less using arraylists and maps, the performance difference about 3 times or even less, if to put Thread.sleep(1) in the loop.
    Now, I have to figure out, which paltform to use for our web-application, but I'm confused.
    BTW, which app.server did you use? May be JBoss is not the best solution? The application should handle about 200 users, most of them almost simultaneously.
    Thanks

  • Query very slow on Windows 2003 Server

    Hi,
    Our customer is running 10g on Windows 2003 server. Some queries perform badly. I imported the data into a 10g DB on Linux (at our office) to analyze and test. Strange enough the same query takes more than 10 times longer to run on the Windows machine compared to the Linux. The Windows machine is dedicated to Oracle, it is not 'overloaded'.

  • Performance (Linux or Solaris)

    Hi folks,
    We have been asked by many clients which performs better / faster (Linux vs Solaris).
    The environment is:
    Intel Xeon Server Hardware
    Local Disk (SAS) - RAID 5
    Single Server install
    Single Location
    VirtualBox as Hypervisor
    I am asking for your feedback / experience with Linux vs Solaris implementing VDI 3.4.1

    Hi,
    we have done some extensive testing on this. One of our clients had some severe issues with performance on Linux after a migration from solaris to linux (on the same hardware) the system load/utilization went up by a factor of 4-5 (server could easily handle 200 sessions with solaris and only 40-50 with linux). We never managed to find the root cause (or a solution) for this and migrated back to solaris.
    But we tried to replicate this issue in the lab (without success). So what we did was this:
    Install Solaris 10 and Linux on one hard drive each and also install SRS 5.3.1 (we also tried this with a few older versions). We set up kiosk sessions to connect to a windows terminal server (we did not bother to compare virtualbox perfoamce) and launch a web browser to a website with loads of flash and moving content. We had about 20 DTUs connect to this server and monitored the system load, utilization and so on of the Xnewt processes. At one point we also automatically started some audio stream to measure the performance of utaudiod. The result (for 2 different servers) was that linux and solaris are really close to each other in performance terms. Solaris showed a little less utilization, about 5-10% maybe. But really quite negligable.
    Long story short: we have seen really poor performance with linux once but in all other cases linux performed almost as well as solaris. And we never compared the virtualbox hypervisors which might be yet another story.

  • Advanced Tab in Options is Blank in FF7 & computer is way slower!

    Two issues since the FF upgrade to 7.0.1 or whatever the most recent update was, my computer is running extremely slow, as I've seen many others with this issue as well, but don't know what the solution is, if there even is one?
    But also I am unable to access the Advanced tab in options (it is blank) so I can't clear my cache. I read some options such as running in safe mode to see if add-ons were an issue and they aren't as far as I can tell.
    I'd prefer to roll back to an earlier version but am wondering if I download FF 6, does it automatically replace FF 7? Or do I have to remove FF7 and if so I am not sure how to do that.
    Need simple easy to follow instructions or resolutions. Thanks!

    Yah, except with the new NSA revelations I want to set and/or verify my levels of encryption as I have in the past. Removing all encryption information leaves us all hanging. SSL 3.0 and TSL 1.0 should be on for everyone while SSL 2.0 needs to be off forever. Is this the case? How would I know?
    So, no, calling users morons (after reading the blog on this topic) and making a feature available for a purportedly 'only 2%' of users who care is not a sufficient argument. If Mozilla is truly committed to not working with the NSA, then encryption should be identified for all users of Firefox instead of completely hidden from view.
    Guess I'll be searching through older versions of Firefox....sigh

  • Brand new macbook pro slows down after I transfer files on from old computer

    Hey, I just purchased a brand new Macbook Pro 3.5 GhZ Haswell processor, 500 gb of flash memory, 16 gb of RAM, OS X Mavericks, 17" retina display and while it's been great upon first booting up after I transferred over my music and books and docs from my old mac (about 150 gb worth (so I still have over 300 gb free on the new one)) I've seen a massive slow down and it's started giving me the beach ball of death which was the main reason I got a new macbook as my old one was beach balling so much it was nearly unusable. Very upset that this brand new stupidly expensive computer is already doing this. Any advice is apppreciated.

    Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
    Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
    You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
    I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.

         Hello everyone. I have an issues and here are the steps used to reproduce it as well as my specs and thoughts. I have taken this in to Apple  retail to check, but the problem could not be re-produced (I think the computer as well as the bluetooth devices have to sleep for this to happen). By the way, does anyone know how long it take for the bluetooth Apple keyboard, mouse and trackpad take to auto-sleep after in-activity?
    Hardware:
    Macbook 6,1
    2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511)
    Latest Apple bluetooth keyboard, trackpad, and mouse
         Basically, after the computer has been to sleep (and I think the bluetooth devices also because this does not happen instantly after sleep if you wake it back up as the Apple Genuis tried and could not get it to happen) and I wake it about 30 minutes or later with either the built in keyboard or any bluetooth device, all bluetooth devices are responding (connected for sure), but my cursor for exmaple jumps across the screen and the keyboard wont type and is super slow. Keep in mind that the whole time this is happening, the built in keyboard and trackpad work great (leads me to think this is bluetooth hardware or software related). After about 1 minute, I can move the mouse cursor normally and type in my password to login. I will eventually take a screen-recording and show my perspective. I have taken this into an Apple retail store, and they could not get it happen, but I think this has to do with the bluetooth devices sleeping, or the amount of time after sleep. We only waited for the front light on the Macbook to go bright and dim to confirm it was asleep and then woke it up and  everything worked ok. The Genuis also check all hardware and confirmed the bluetooth hardware was working. I never had this problem at all with Snow Leopard. This happened as soon as I upgraded to Lion, I thought maybe I had a problem with the upgrade from SL to Lion, but I re-installed Lion (fresh) and still have the same exact problem.
         Please let me know if there is any thing I left out and I will be happy to edit. I don't always remember everything. Thanks!

    I just had a similar issue and fixed it by turning off the keyboard, waiting for the computer to recognise that, then turned it back on, all better.
    Last night I manually activated SLEEP from the Apple menu - I rarely do this but thought of it to kill the glare as I went to sleep.  This morning it woke up ok, but typing on the BT keyboard was super slow (I was changing windows then watching the keypresses appear in the new field, about one per second) and a special-characters popup was appearing (never seen that before). The Magic Mouse was working fine, as were the onboard keyboard and trackpad.
    My laptop (MBP 17" 2.53 i5) recently upgraded from SL10.6.8 to Lion 10.7.2, I have yet to apply the 10.7.3 patch.

  • Computer Slowness after Script

    I wrote a script that saves a file on the desktop and a couple of places on the server.  I've got 15 people in my office using it and suddenly everyone is complaining of computer slowness.  The action used to take 10-15 seconds to run, and now takes up to 3 minutes. But more than that, everyone's computers are just generaly being VERY slow
    Has anyone seen this?  Is the action storing somehign on the computer that is slowing it down?  Is there any way I can write somehting in the code to fix this??
    Thank you

    Most likely this is because of using files off the server -- now the OS and Photoshop are checking the server for status of that file.  If the server is heavily loaded, slow, or on a slow network, that can take extra time.  Combine a few of those factors and you probably get the slowdown you are reporting.
    Try resetting Photoshop's preferences on one of the affected systems and see if the problem goes away.
    If so, the problem was opening a file off a slow server -- and you just cleared the recent files list that was checking the status of that file on the server.
