Watching Online Video Content Causes Massive Heat Rise!

Hi All,
I have a MBP Intel C2D 2.2 running Tiger 10.4.11. I tend to use Safari as my web browser but have recently noticed that whenever I watch any form on online video's (youtube etc), the temperature of my MBP goes through the roof easily reaching and exceeding 80ºC at which point I get scared silly and quit watching anything. I had a look at Activity Monitor and the Safari %CPU figure is also approaching 80% with 16 Threads, Real Memory running at 735 MB and Virtual Memory running at about 1.3 GB.
I have no idea what this means but the scrolling CPU graph at the bottom is nearly full and the CPU idle figure goes from around mid 90% to between 21% and 40%. This is just one example but put here to give you experts who know what it all means an idea.
Please can someone tell me what is going on and how I can correct it? I am not that techie with computers but am happy to follow step by step directions - I am really afraid my MBP is going to melt or burn up something inside.
Thank You!

Thanks for the suggestion. Already using smc fan control here; cannot speak for others.
It seems the specific problem is: viewing WAV (and AVI) files using Safari 3.2.1 (and possibly earlier versions) ALWAYS causes Safari to grab the cpu and really run it flat out (on my computer Activity Monitor shows Safari at 98 in the CPU column which is way higher than any other app ever uses). This never happens with viewing QT files nor Real Player files.
So it seems viewing WAV files using Safari does something to disturb normal functioning. Quitting Safari always cools down a hot MBP. Letting the MBP to continue running, once a WAV file has been viewed, causes it to remain running a the rapid rate and the MBP continues to remain very hot. Conclusion: WAV files modify Safari in a deleterious way. This is true even if move to another app without quitting Safari.
In fact nothing else (Skype, MS Word and Excel, Adobe programs, Filemaker, iPhoto) ever causes any heating problem and the MBP routinely runs at around 106-9 F when in use.
Sure, I could run the MBP at 165 degrees F, but it seems there is a possible software issue that needs correcting.

  • Watching online video on a new Intel-MacBook

I am unable to watch online videos on my new MacBook. The windows media player alarm comes up telling me I don't have the right plug-in. I believe that is the Quicktime component add-on. This still doesn't work. How can watch online video (like cnn.com for example) on my Intel MacBook?

The intel flip4mac beta is no longer available so you can't use it.
Therefore install windows media player from http://www.mactopica.com
You could then force safari to open under rosetta and the windows media plugin should work.

Why i cant watch online videos in c2-00
Moderator's note: We have amended the title of this post as this was moved from another thread.

    Hi rafiqs38,
    Welcome to Nokia Forum!
May we ask, have you checked your phone if you have the right internet settings that you need for streaming? You can check this by going to Menu > Settings > Configuration > Default Configuration Settings > Select your operator's connection. If you don't have it yet, your can ask your network operator to send it to you directly.

  • I can't watch online videos without them constantly stopping and buffering

I cannot watch online videos or movies from a website or with a player. The videos and/or movies continually stop and start again and are constantly buffering. I have tried emptying the cache. I can maneuver all over the web without delays so I don't think it's my internet. Our internet is wireless and we have a satellite system.

    Hi and welcome...
Your Mac came with Flash, QuickTime, and Java pre-installed.
It depends on which format the videos are that you are trying to view. Often Flip4Mac is required.
You can access Flip4Mac settings in System Preferences (in your Applications folder) once the software is installed.
If Flip4Mac doesn't help, post a link to the site where you can't stream video.

  • Since Gamers and those who watch online videos are having trouble with Adobe Flash Player 10, why am I, who does neither, having the beast crash all the time?

Adobe Flash Player seems to wait until I am near the end of the Yahoo comics section before it crashes, but not always, sometimes it just seems to have a mind of its own and crashes indiscriminately.

As I am the person having this problem, I am at a loss as to what to say in Reply. I thought I was making progress just by noting that video watchers and gamers were having this problem. Then I thought that it might be worthy of note that it seemed to happen more often when I was reading the yahoo comics section, I happen to like the comics. So, I suppose that my question should be, Am I being discriminated against because I do not watch online videos, play games and happen to enjoy the comics?

  • Watching online video - lagging

Hello everyone. I have a problem with lagging when watching online videos. I have intel core duo 2.8 and currently updated to 4gig ram, and as before, online video keeps pretty its irritating manner.
    Any advice please?

I have the same problem (originally posted below).
What speed is usually required for video?
I get between 3 & 4 Mb/s on speed tests (DSLreports). I don't have any problem on any of my other computers on my network, so I wouldn't think it would require more.

  • Any difference to watch online video & FaceTime between Wifi & LTE?

Hi, I'm planning to buy an iPad for my mother soon, she don't have interent at home, I'm thinking that should I:
    1) Buy an iPad Wifi+Cellular and let her to use the SIM card to connect internet; or
    2) Buy an iPad Wifi and apply the broadband service for her
    - May I ask is there any diffenent to watch online video on iPad between wifi connection and cellular connection? Is it able to watch HD quality online video if using SIM card connected to internet? (Because I remember that the video quality is much poor if I use SIM card to connect internet long long time ago)
    - May I also ask if I can use FaceTime with SIM card connection as well?
    Thank you for your help.

Thank you for your help! Sorry my message may misleaded...
I'm planning to use Rogers in Ont, Canada, I guess 5GB per month is enough for my mom in the beginning, and LTE is faster than the lower cost broadband service that offer by Rogers, so both idea should work, but I'm still cannot make any decision because of the iOS system on HD video viewing and FaceTime connection:
    1) May I ask is there any diffenent to watch online video on iPad between wifi connection and cellular connection? Is it able to watch HD quality online video if using SIM card connected to internet?
Because I remember that the video quality is much poor if I use SIM card to connect internet long long time ago, the quality was automatically compressed when watching online video with 3G mode, but it's long time ago, not sure now.
    2) May I also ask if I can use FaceTime with SIM card connection as well (LTE)?

  • Watching online videos

when i want to watch online videos, sometimes it says to download the plugin to windows media player but it still wont let me view the video online. what do i do?

I had the same problem. Even after installing flip4mac, I got that message. Yesterday, I noticed that one of the options offered, to the left of "upgrade your player" was "Play video anyway" or something like that. So I hit it and -- the video started! Since then, it's gone straight to the video without giving the message first. Hope that helps.

  • Watching online video's and snow leopard

i use to watch online videos like smallville and son's of anarchy. but ever since i installed the new snow leopard. i cant watch any tv show online (ie- fx, cw channels). i can still watch youtube. i searched the first 38 forum pages to see if anyone else is having this same problem.

I seem to have the same issue that Viking is having. This issue is really frustating the **** out of me. I've got two identical iMac's that had the hard drives wiped clean. Installed a fresh copy of SL, did all the Apple updates so I'm at SL 10.6.1. Installed Flip4Mac 2.3.0.14, Perian 1.1.4, QT7 and I still can't get any streaming video/audio (ASX, ASF, WMV, etc) to play through either Safari or Firefox. All it does is show a blank window where the video should be or the asx page just sits there loading.
I've read through hundreds of posts about this issue and can't find a solution, everything just says to install flip4mac and it should work. I've downloaded WMV, MPG, AVI files to the desktop and they play just fine in VLC player. All the QT trailers on Apple's site play just fine in the browser as well. Flash sites like youtube work just fine too. These are not Realmedia sites. I've tried it with only Flip4Mac installed without anything else and have the same problem. No firewalls are on either. All the Flip plugins seem to be installed correctly in the Safari plugins list.
Can anyone please give me some suggestions to try? I'm a recent Mac convert from the PC and can't believe that it would be this difficult to get something working that always worked on the PC.
    Thx

  • I cant watch online videos as its all scrambelled. This just started since last two days, I cant watch online videos as its all scrambelled. This just started since last two days

Since last two days I cant watch any online videos.. I can hear the voice but the picture is all scrambed and it keeps jumping up and down.
Would appreciate suggestions to fix this.
    Thanks

Might be the Flash plugin causing this...
Uninstall the old then reinstall new >  Troubleshoot Flash Player | Mac OS
And empty your browser cache more often.
When you post for help, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. Thanks!

  • Flash Player crashes when watching online video on Win 7

    Hi.
I have just built a new machine and it's got a pretty good spec but I've been having this problem since I installed windows 7.
I have tried 64-bit first and then 32-bit version but still had the same problem.
I can be watchingonline content such as a programme on BBC iplayer or 4OD ( or any other site you'd care to mention) and at some point the whole screen freezes and i'm left with no choice but to press the reset button.
I'm fairly confident that i've narrowed this problem down to flash player (but not 100% sure).
This will occur several time per day & is driving me nuts. Everything else about the machine works great but online videos are a nightmare.
    Any suggestions anyone?
Your help will be much appreciated.
    P.S.
Yes I do have the latest version flash player.

    Hi.
    No, nothing works.
Just went in to event viewer and it's saying something about an atikmdag error.
Been googling and this seems to be linked to ati video cards.
also stuff about Kernel 41 error but from what i can figure out.. this is a very generalised error.
Maybe it's not flash? But why does it only happen during streaming?
    Getting wound up with this.
Want to buy a new videocard to see if that would work but i can't afford to waste the money if its not the problem.
Why didn't i just buy a basic Dell?

  • Online video clips causes crash

why does my macbook pro crash when I open online videos with it unplugged? Works fine when it's plugged in.

Flash video is very CPU intensive, open activity monitor and look at your CPU usage while trying to watch a YouTube video, no doubt it is at 100%.
Unfortunately there isn't much you can do about this - my 400 Mhz G3 can't handle flash video and by the look of some previous posts on the forum I'd be surprised if any can .
